Hi, my name is Joann and I'm a fabriholic. Never really thought about my fabric stash until I started packing for a move. Guess I should start sewing all that beautiful fabric that I love to touch and dream about  =;0)

Joann, the best thing about fabric stashes is sometimes there is enough to make a queen size quilt with just a little bit of new purchased fabrics Laughing. The mystery quilt (Pink, purple and green) pictures I posted was made primarily out of mine and my mother's fabric stashes with only purchasing a couple of half yards of greens.

My new project is all out of new fabrics because I don't have a lot of batiks.

My goal this month is to get some shelving put up in my sewing room so i can see my fabric stash.  Right now I have it in drawers, totes, and even in those hanging shoe holders for your closet.

I got a bargain yesterday. I get weekly emails from Batiks Etc on their 'Why not Wednesday' sale. The sale prices are from when the email goes out (Tues) until Wednesday at midnight.  It stated that more fabrics were put in their 'Spring Cleaning' category. Since I am looking for batiks for my new quilt I thought I would check out their sale category. I found a good light/med value green/blue batik that I could use for the background for half price. I spent less on the yardage for the background than I spent on all the fat quarters I already purchased for the blocks. There wasn't any other fabrics in the sale category that would work in my quilt, I still need 4 or 5 more colors for the quilt. I should be receiving the package by Saturday or Monday. I am so excited! One of my mom's friends said that I should consider using a colored fabric for the background as opposed to the light beige I was considering. I am really going outside the box on this quilt.

This is the first time I have mail ordered any fabrics but at the half price, I felt I couldn't go wrong. The store is in Virginia but I don't want to travel that far with the gas prices increasing. The shop didn't go to the quilt extravaganza last weekend because they don't travel to shows in the winter. I have seen their display at other quilt shows and I know their fabrics are good.

Ivtwoqlt I hope you like your fabrics!

I missed a sewing class today due to tummy troubles, but hope to get to another that is scheduled for tomorrow. It is a usage class and I need it! My new machine has many capabilities that I am not familiar with. Given my ten year haitus from sewing I want to catch up. On my old machine I had a work book where I could go through it an use every foot and technique and save all of my samples. I did that on my own, if this new machine had that option I could do it on my own once again.

I bought some cute fabrics to make some outfits for my DGD. I also received a dress kit from Sew Beautiful so I am set to go once I get going! lol  I want to make and use some of the cute ribbon embelishments that are popular these days.

    Sewon Sisters!

Wow is all I can say!  I bit the bullet and got a new machine a few weeks ago!  All I can say is love love love it!  I'm so glad I finally talked myself into it.  The only draw back is no DVD just a booklet.  I like to have something to watch as I learn sometimes and this machine has more then I am used to.  Wow I feel like I went from a pinto to a caddy with this new machine.  I've got some studing for work to do this week, but come the weekend its me and the new baby.  Hubby n son are on their own!  I will even run to the store n get them foods they can do themseves, lol!  Yea right I am dreaming on that one.  Sunday is SuperSew Sunday with the quilt quild gals, so they will be on there own for sure.  Who needs football when I have a new machine, lol!

Sheila, a light beige will muddy the pure colours of Batiks. A stark white or even black would be spectacular!!!! Trust me on this one, sweetie!! You can also pull out one of the colours you like better and use that as a solid (green?). Just make sure that whatever you chose has the same depth of colour as the batiks. Must be nice getting packages in the mail!! I don't have a credit card (haven't for over 8 years) so I miss that kind of thing, but not the bill at the end of the month.

Thanks Barbe for the color suggestions, My mom's friend said that a white or light color background would make the eye jump from block to block but felt that a medium value green/blue color batik would pull each block together as a whole since I have various shades of blue batik for the blocks. So I did find a med green/blue batik. If I don't think it will go with the quilt, I can always not use it and try black.

I don't have a credit card either, I got rid of my credit card over 8 years ago, but I have a prepaid credit card that I can use for Internet purchases. I add money to the card when I want to make a purchase, there is only a charge when I add money to the card and it is definitely less than interest. When my husband was laid off many years ago we got rid of our credit cards to cut expenses, although it seems to hurt us when we were trying to get assistance to reduce the house payment since I have been laid off. They asked about credit card payments and when I said I don't have any credit cards but we do have these weekly expenses due to my husband's job that I pay straight from his weekly pay check, it didn't count as debt. Undecided

I have a debit card from my checking account, no credit card for me either.  The debit card acts like a cc when ordering online, but if you don't have the money, you don't make the purchase!

I have a debit card too, but can't use it if I'm not there in person. Sounds interesting Meece, I'll have to look into that. Sheila, I went the prepaid one year, but it cost $11 a month whether I used the card or not!! I got rid of all credit cards when my DH was diagnosed with his brain tumours. We also down-sized our house so that I could carry the expenses on my salary...just in case. It's true about the credit rating though, NO credit is as bad as bad credit!! So I got a credit card for the store I worked for and ran up purchases that I would normally just pay cash for, and then paid them off. It boosted my credit rating by 100 points!!!!!

I think the credit rating, credit bureau is a real scam we are all caught in.

Barbe and everyone I wanted to say how much I appreciate it when someone here knows something or has expertise in an area and chimes in to help. I love the new knowledge I gain and appreciate the sharing so much. Thank you it leaves me feeling like I am not out here alone.

Well, the fabric came and it is too busy for what I was actually looking for, I will add it to my stash and will look at using a pure white for the background (thanks Barbe). If it was more tone on tone it might have worked but there is too much contrast in it. I was originally going to go with a white on white or beige on beige but Mom's friend talked me out of it. Seeing this batik I bought with the other fabrics just doesn't inspire me the way I think the white will. I don't think black will work since I have 3 very dark blue fabrics but the white will set off all the shades of blue and yellow I have picked.

My guild is planning a quilt workshop in July and one of the projects is the cactus basket on this page http://www.butterflystitches.net/classes.htm Carol Ewbank is the sister in my guild and is coming to do this workshop. The fabric I just got will look good as a pot of cactus.

That all sounds like fun. WHen I took a hand piecing and quilting class years ago I found the fabric selection took a lot of work. It was sort of fun but really difficult to get it all together.

    Have fun

Hah!! Just so you guys know...I used to have MASTER quilters come into my store and I had to pick fabrics FOR them!!! Some, of course, do their own, but I had enough of them to know that not all those award winning quilts should have one person's name on them!!! I recall picking 17 fabrics for someone once...all for one quilt!! She sat back and didn't say a PEEP until I was finished the process. Bought every single one I picked.

I am blessed that colour come SO easily to me, along with texture and balance. My houses was always been beautiful inside (at least!) and I get a lot of comments that I should do interior decorating. Not in the mood to hustle for work, really.

My mother's cousin came out for a visit this week and she is working on Victorian crazy quilt squares.  She was saying that you can use any brocade, sating, velvets, etc... I think I am going to try to make a bed runner for our master.  I still have fabric leftover from making the bedspread and the window treatments, AND I have several other coordinating fabrics.  What would be the dimentions for a queen bed runner?

barbe I was wondering the same so I googled it.  I think it looks just like a table runner, just wide for your bed.  The pics I saw they had them placed at the foot of the bed.

Yeah, a bed runner is a quilt that is made to just lay across the foot of the bed and is approx 24" wide and the length is 25-30" longer than the width of the mattress, so there is a 12-15" drop on each side of the bed. It is good in the winter to help keep your toes toasty without putting extra layers on the rest of the body and is a quick way to change the look of a room with a basic color bedspread.

Sheial thats what I noticed when I was looking at all the pictures.  The main comforter/bedspeads were all solid in color, but the bed runners were what made it pop with alittle something something. They even had one for the kiddos and the over hang had pockets in it for some storage for the stuff animals. Thanks Meece for telling us about them.  I never knew anything like that was around.  I love looking at pics of anything that has to do with quilts.

Paula, that is SO cool about pockets for stuffed animals!!!! I could do ones for my grands that have roads and houses on them so they could play in bed with mini cars!!! What a great idea!!

LOVE the idea of just doing enough of a quilt to master the pattern before you get bored. Bed runner...I'm loving it!!

    Yes a great idea!

I need one of those tucked in on my bed for remote control, tissues and such.

Well, I saw the blocks my 2nd cousin had done, and I went online and got a pattern for crazy quilt blocks, but the instructions weren't very clear.  I went ahead and made a throw pillow to try it out.  I really think it will add to my bed decor, and will definitely do a bed runner.  I figure 14 blocks (2 wide by 7 long) will be fun.  It is giving me the opportunity to try out some of my decorative stitches on my Husky!

I have a store bought pouch for tissues, books and such.  The part that tucks in isn't long enough to support the weight of a couple of books.  I think I might make a "crazy" one with a longer tuck in flap.

I added a bit more embellishment to the pillow but I have now walked away.  Now I will start my bed runner.
