Meece, I had to break down and let my left arm be used as I worried that the 6 or so attempts on my right arm and hand were going to CAUSE LE on that side!!!

Alyson, I haven't had much luck rounding up Canadians that are not on holiday or didn't just have a DIEP to meet with you!!!! Have you made contact with anyone that I don't know that I could hitch to???? I am embarrassed by the lack of response, but I am only on one Canadian thread and they don't "know" you (except we are all sisters!).

Alyson - the quilt is very pretty.  I still cannot believe you quilted that huge thing on a normal size sewing machine!  You are amazing.

have fun on your trip. AJ

Barbe,  I tried to be a big girl and each time I was stuck, I let them search for the vein for quite awhile.  Unfortunately, it made for a sore hand and foot.  The second nurse used special disinfectant on my left arm.  She said that LE is often a result of infection, and she wanted to make sure she gave me as much protection as possible.  She also had the tech put that plastic sheet over the site after she removed the iv.  Unfortunately, two days later and I still have a red patch on my arm and it is itchy.

    Aly your quilt is amazing!

Meece I don't like the sound of that itching......not a good sign. Please keep a very close eye on it and if it doesn't ease off soon I would go get it checked. I have a head and neck CT and MRI coming up and I'm not looking forward to it as I know they will have to stick me many times and possibly still not find a vein.....sigh.

Dream catchers ar all done and one they are hung at the venue I will be posting some pics for you all to peruse. The wedding is coming together nicely although there for a while I wasn't sure it would as DD kept changing her mind. Oh well, I guess that is the prerogative of the bride......lol.

    Have a great day all!

    Love n hugs. Chrissy

    What's the wedding date, Chrissy?

I feel bad that on my first day of chemo there was a grwon man whining about getting his iv started and I didn't have compassion for him.  I thought, "What a baby!"  Now I know where he was coming from.  I had a head and neck MRI last month but they didn't require contrast.

Meece the wedding is the 28th September.

I'm getting to the stage that I'm feeling a little phobic re needle sticks.......I've always hated blood draws but now I only have one tiny little vein everything is a little scary and the nurses and docs insist on trying the next spot......all to no avail.  I have been seriously thinking of talking to my doc about other choices.

Meece, could the red and itching be from the tape or plastic sheet? That was my reaction to the tape after lx.

The blood bank says to up liquid intake during the 24-48 hours before giving blood. It makes the veins easier to find and access. I always lie and say they're easy to find. My personal record of vein hunting was 4.5 hours for a blood transfusion. Everyone in the hospital gave it a try. They finally reused the vein used for a blood transfusion a day earlier. Then they sent me home and I reacted to the transfusion. DH piled every blanket in the house because I was so cold. (We were in Alaska, so lots of blankets)

I'll join the chorus of blood vein issues.  Before this stupid cancer they NEVER had a problem finding a vein and getting a good one first try.  Now it seems all of my veins have gone into hiding.

Meece, Wren took the words out of my mouth - the tape they use makes me itch and turn red.  So they've added it to my list of allergies.

It does sound like a LATEX allergy to surgical tape!! I have to get a special paper tape. I used to get into operating rooms first but now so many people are allergic to latex it's no big deal anymore.

I was so dehydrated with my second pregnancy from being sick that I got hospitalized. They needed to get an IV going and obviously couldn't. A surgeon came in and opened a vein surgically. The blood on the curtain divider was spectacular as it sprayed out of my body!!! A constant reminder of just how bad I was..... My ex was mad that I hadn't come home after work. Idiot.

I think it is an allergy, however they say the tape was not latex. I have a perfect red square on my arm.

Took Matt to the VA last week and his allergy test results were in.  He is allergic to latex AND every other thing they tested him for.  No way he'll be able to avoid all that stuff.  They said there would be no issue getting him into immunotherapy, but he'd have to make the 120 mile trip every week and stay there at least two hours.  He'd lose his job if he were to miss one day of work each week, so we'll figure something else out.  The doctor was amazed that he isn't in worse shape.  Guess I gave my kids a gift that wasn't on their list (allergies).

Meece, It is possible to be allergic to the adhesive on the tape.  I know because I am.

Most likely.  It's not really itching much any more.  Just pink.

They still call it a "latex" allergy if it's the tape that you are allergic to. I was in the ICU once for 3 days and they had the ECG hooked up and it took 6 months until those scars faded! If you put surgical tape on me you can watch it go red and start to bleed underneath. They didn't believe me until they saw it!!! The home nurse after my masts ordered in a very expensive tape for me. Truly allergenic.

Meece our body completely changes every 7 years. Matt may grow out of his allergies. I used to get migraines so bad they burst blood vessels in my eyes and now I don't! Even with all the stress I've had. Go figure. It was through migraines that I learned about growing into and out of health issues like that.

barbe - i'm allergic to the paper tape they use (steri-strips), so they used glue on me.  BTW, I'm not allergic to latex - my mattress is latex.

gardengumby, there are different kinds of latex and as the latex in your mattress isn't actually touching your skin, it's okay. (I am a certified "Sleep Expert"). As for the steri-strips, I'm allergic to them too! That's why the nurse had to get in the good tape. Hope this pic isn't TMI, but you can see all the blood under the dressing due to me bleeding through the steri-strips!! The blood just pools in the surgical bandage. The day nurse felt so bad for me!!!! Glue would have been nice... would it properly "seal" a 22" scar??

They used glue on me in the 2nd operation after reacting to the tape in the first. The glue never fell off like it was supposed to. Finally got rid of it during the mx a month later.

When I went in for post surgical checks and such they scrubbed the glue off me - plus I picked it off.  Wren which hospital were you in?

Matt's had severe allergies since he was two weeks old.  He was on liquid allergy meds at that time.  We've just never know everything he was allergic to.  I had him skin tested but they only dis maybe 20 things.  The VA sent him a HEPA air purifier today.

Soooo, my cell phone messed up on me today and discharged its battery completely by 9 am.  Once the battery is at 0% it will absolutely not charge.  I end up having to switch batteries with DH because his phone will charge the empty battery.  So I had no phone communication until around 5:30 this evening when we switched batteries.  I checked my missed calls and when the phone is off it doesn't indicate incoming calls that went to voicemail.  So I called voicemail and my onc's office called at 9:30 this morning requesting a call back.  I get to stress out all night and into the workday tomorrow until I get a break and can call.  I am stretching my memory to recall if they call and speak to me in person if the scans are good, or does the docter herself call when there is something off.  Have they left a message when the news is good?  I just don't remember!

Meece, let us know as soon as you know so we can take a deep breath, too!!! I'm surprised the army took on Matt with allergies. I wrote 6 hours of exams and was the only one to pass. The very first question they asked me for the physical was "do you have any allergies". When I said yes (mold and such) they said good-bye. Wouldn't even let me explain!!!!!!!!!!!

Garden, Group Health Central. They still have operating rooms and an overnight facility at central campus. They use Virginia Mason for big stuff.
