deborye   sorry that you have to see your dad like that, it is so hard on the families when you know that your dad would have never acted like that.  rest assured though that us nurses are aware of the dementia stages and what comes with it, and hopefully he has great aides and nurses that will love and care for him no matter what.

Laurie  I hear ya on the non-creative part, so tired of trying to come up with new things and please everyone.  My DH asked what the special occasion was that he was getting lasagna, cause I hate making it, and really dont like eating it either.  So I told him the occasion was... I wont have to cook for awhile and he will be eating lasagna all week long.

Tonight is hump night and since we cant be outside anymore, we will go to a local restaurant that has 1/2 price appetizers and a special on beer. Hopefully all the gang will show up, it is so hard to keep up with everyone once the weather turns and we hybernate.

Just got home a couple minutes ago.  We even stopped and had dinner at Texas Roadhouse (now I know how Rick intends to feed me over the next couple of days).

We got to the hospital around 10:30 and they got me ready.  Even though I drank plenty up until about 7:30 this morning, the first attempt at an IV was a failure so I showed the nurse where to make the second attempt.  The anesthesiologist was there along with three other nurses - it was quite a party - so the poor nurse was under a lot of pressure!

The doctor came in and marked me up about 11:45 and they took me away at about 12:20.  I remember getting from the guerney to the OR table, then it was lights out until I woke up in the Recovery Room about 2:30 or so.  Apparently, unbelievably, my Kansas Plastic Surgeon had put in 600 cc tissue expanders rather than the 375 cc ones that he told me he had inserted.  So the removal took longer than expected.  I guess I missed a big opportunity to be "boobalicious"...lol.  It's no wonder those things were so uncomfortable, they were way, way too big for me.  Rick was starting to get a little worried because of the additional time involved.  But everything was ok.

I was awake in the recovery room for probably 45 minutes.  They gave me a snack and a drink, my discharge information and then I got dressed and was out of there.  We were at Texas Roadhouse at just past 4 p.m. and we were back in the car at 4:40!

It's nice to be able to take a deep breath and not feel those obnoxious expanders!  I'm not in any pain at all, surprisingly.  You'd think it might hurt a little.  Maybe the anesthesia is still doing its job, or I was already numb from the mastectomies and it's just not going to hurt that much.  In any case, I have prescriptions for three days of antibiotics and some Tylenol with Codeine, in case I need it later.

The surgeon told Rick that he "looked around inside" after he removed the expanders and everything looked very good.  That is very good, indeed!

Recovery should be simple, I can shower tomorrow and resume all of my normal activities except I have a 10 pound weight restriction until I go back to see the doctor in 10-14 days.

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts, prayers and well-wishes.  One more procedure done, finished, complete!

Debbie - get yourself some breast "enhancers" and a cheap but generous bra! You should be able to get that Dolly Parton look going on!

Deb - so sorry about your dad. I hope they can do something to keep him calm and comfortable. My mom is on antidepressants and it seems to be working. She sees a geriatric phychiatric nurse practitioner through her assisted living facility.

Carrie - my DH loves lasagna, too. And after everythng he's had to do (and that includes the upcoming seven weeks of driving to Boston for rads) he deserves all the lasagna he wants!

I did not like dinner at all, waaaaayyyyyy too rich for me.  I don't like heavy food, but my DH and kids loved it.

Thank you, Seaside!  My sense of humor has sustained me through all of this, for sure!  I'll post a picture of my "pink" hair after Sunday's Race for the Cure.

DH just came back from picking up my drugs and made a stop at the grocery store for ice cream.  I think there's a hot fudge sundae in my immediate future  Tongue out

    Laurie,

We do a lot of shrimp when we go to NC on vacation each summer since we can go to the docks and buy it as the shrimp boats come in...

We have this one every year and it is light and delicious.... Really showcases the freshness of the shrimp....

I also have a really good Shrimp Creole recipe that is tomato based but not too spicey... I will dig tnat one out and post it soon....

Another idea for shrimp is jambalaya...this one just came to me after Seaside's shrimp creole suggestion.   Jambalaya is really easy to make.  Here's a recipe for a slow-cooker version:

Michelle, glad to hear surgery went well and you are home.  Another procedure to cross off the list.

Deborey, I am sorry to hear about your father.  My mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimners for over 5 years.  Laurie really said it, it is so sad that they don't recognize you and you don't recognize them either.  They are not the person you knew any more.  A couple of years ago, my mother fell and had to go into a rehad facility for a while.  She did things there that she would never have done before, and it was embarassing.  She took a swing at some of the aides when they tried to get her to do something she didn't want.  And some of the mean things she said were very uncharacteristic of her personality.  But there are still good times that we have.  She is like a kid in a lot of ways.  Her face lights up when you give her an ice cream cone.  And she still has fun and laughs over lots of things.  She lives with my sister and really is very happy.  I hope your dad has lots of good days.  There are good medications that can really slow the progression.  ((((((hugs)))))))

He recognized his children, I try to see him at least 2 to 3 times a week.  I am getting second thoughts about having him over for Thanksgiving.  He is very incontinent.  We will see, if I ask my aunt and uncle over at least my uncle can help him in the bathroom when he has to go.

He was recently approved by the VA for 14 hours of homecare per day, that they will pay for.  I faxed a letter over the the PCP that examined him stating that I feel he needs more than 14 hours so the Social Worker called me at work and is going to request 20 hours, keeping my fingers crossed. The poor CNA nurses that have to clean up after his BMs and give him a shower.  He gets it on the toilet, wall, floor, safty bar, YUCK!!!

I correspond a lot with the owner of the home care that my Dad has, she said the VA takes their time in paying her.  She has a client that is VA approved and she has been caring for him since June and has not go one reimbursement check from them.  The VA has that, "hurry up and wait attitude."  She has been calling them and keeps getting transferred to this and that person and still can not get results.

My Dad was paying out of pocket for home care since April 2010, I am so relieved that he is getting help from them, he also gets a pension with aid and attendance. Home care was costing him over a thousand dollars a month, sometimes more.

Deb- that is insane that the nurse hasn't been paid for work she did back in June, how does she eat?  I remember my grandfather who had dementia was in a home specifically for people with memory issues.  He was a really nice guy, but like Kay said, would do weird random things out of character.  One day at lunch he got the end of the chips in the bag, a bunch of small pieces with a few big chips.  He went nuts, was firing everyone, trying to go in the kitchen to find the cook etc.

Thanks for the shrimp ideas ladies.  I will be honest and say I am sick of fishtastic Wednesday's:/  I don't even like fish, but I keep trying.  DH loves it, it's good for you cooked properly etc.  I'll try a few more times and then I may just give it up for awhile.  I really only like it baked stuffed ot fried, not a slmon, tuna, swordfish, shrimp fan.  That doesn't leave much.

Michelle- I had to laugh at the boobalicious comment- I was happy to hear how well it went for you, hope you are not in pain after the drugs wear off I went to Walmart and got a bra and bought the breast enhancers thanks for the idea. I would love to have a hot fudge sunday right now, that sounds so good. guess i will settle for popcorn and chocolate chips again.

laurie- I love fish but DH doesn;t care for it so i make him somthing different for him sounds like a lot but really isnt to much trouble at all, Have you tried cod? It is pretty mild i blacken it and put lemon juice on it.

Seaside- I would love your recipe for the shrimp creole. I love creole and jambalaya sauces YUM!

Kay- havnt seen you hear for awhile, good to see you posting again

Thanks, Apple!  I don't know what these guys did differently but I woke up fully alert and was sitting in a chair fifteen minutes later.  I was amazed at how "not groggy" I felt!  I have to say that the hospital itself is old, rather dreary, and the day surgery area is in serious need of brightening up.  They said it's due to be remodeled "next"... But I found the care to be absolutely outstanding. And they wasted no time getting me up and out of there.

Michelle you rock!  cant beleive you went out to dinner!  I usually puke for 24 hrs after surgery! Maybe like you said , they just had you n a twilight sleep.  did you tell the husband about the huge implants? and was he disappointed about them being gone?  men are such simple creatures.....  I was a pretty big D before and wanted the "good" breast reduced to a C during my deip and when I came out of surgery thats the first thing my DH did was look under the sheets,,,and his comment was "thats not a C"  apparently he thought it was too small.  anyways he has adjusted to the new me.

Oh and Michelle  ice cream and drugs?  Life is good!

    LOL at apples' alliteration!!!

Carrie - I am lucky that anesthesia hasn't made me sick, so far.  Maybe it's the scopolamine patch, I don't know.  I was definitely out, though, intubated and all.  Ate the ice cream and didn't need the drugs, not even a Tylenol.  Absolutely no pain!  I guess I'm just a tough ole bird!!!

Kay - how are you doing?  Hoping the lymphedema is improving.

Ok, off to the Lady Grace store to see what breast prostheses and mastectomy bras will do for my figure.

Here's the shrimp creole recipe that I use. It is from an old cookbook put together by employees of Dayton Hudson department stores to raise money for the United Way... Lots of real recipes from real people....

    Shrimp Creole

    1 Large Onion, diced

    1 Green Bell Pepper, diced

    6 Cloves Garlic

    1 Stick Butter or Margarine

3 (8 oz) cans of Tomato Sauce

    3 cups Water

    2 Bay Leaves

    1 1/2 tsp Sugar

1/2 tsp Crushed Red Pepper (or to taste)

    3/4 tsp Lemon Juice

3/4 tsp Hot Pepper Sauce, such as Frank's Hot Sauce

    Salt

    Pepper

    3 pounds Raw Shrimp, peeled

    1 Tbs chopped Parsley

    Hot cooked Rice

In a 5-quart Dutch Oven, saute the onion and bell pepper in the butter until softened. Add the crushed garlic and saute just a few more minutes. Stir in tomato sauce, water, bay leaves, sugar, red pepper, lemon juice and hot pepper sauce. Season with a bit of salt and pepper.

Heat to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer, about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the shrimp and parsley. Cover and simmer an additional 25 minutes or until shrimp is cooked through.

Remove bay leaves. Serve over rice.

Edited to add.... Those that like things spicier may want to add more hot sauce either to the dish itself or at the table.

The anesthesiologist that I had for my lumpectomy said that he would give me an injection of something to combat nausea and a long acting pain killer while I was out....

Whatever he did, it sure worked!!! In the past, whenever I had anesthesia, I was sick as a dog for the rest of the day but, this time I was fine. And the pain level really was not bad at all....

Lol, Carberry on the drugs and ice cream.....

thanks for the recipe Seaside!  Perhaps I'll try that for the next Wednesday :)

Tonight my husband has a meeting so he'll be home late, it's just the boys and me.  So....I have no idea.  I am feeling lazy it is so dreary out, perhaps pancakes for them or just some pasta, something that does not require me asking them to keep taking bites.

I will agree drugs and ice cream. lol!

Well, I have the drugs but I didn't even need to take a regular Tylenol!  No pain at all, even today!  All is good.

We are going out for seafood and clam chowdah tonight as soon as DH stops working.

The shrimp creole recipe looks really good, I might have to give that one a try!

Boneless chicken Breast was a bargain this week at $1.88/lb if you bought the large package so we've been having chicken week here!

Last night was chicken parm made with part of the package. Tonight is chicken fajitas using Tyler Florence's Ultimate Fajita recipe just subbing chicken for the steak. We'll get one more dinner from this package of chicken but, not sure yet what it will be....

I really like chicken but, am hoping they have a good sale on something else next week...lol!

  • Laurie08
    Laurie08 Member Posts: 2,047

Seaside- freeze it!  I buy chicken in bulk on sale and repackage it and freeze it  so I have two breasts per package.  I do the same with all my meat when it's on sale, I know when I am down to only a few packages I have to start searching for the sales again.  Plus it's nice not having to buy meat every week, it can give you a nice cheap week of shopping if your budget needs it.
