Laurie, cupcakes are easy.  Frost them with bought frosting and use candy corn to make a face.  This is not a contest!  But buying some cupcakes might be the way to go.  All the supermarket bakeries around here have baked goods for every holiday.

No candy at this house.  We won't turn on the light, but even when we bought the candy and turned on the light, nobody came.  Houses spaced far apart and a long driveway.  Besides which, I'm not crazy about the idea of giving kids a lot of sugary candy.

Picked up the CSA veggies.  I haven't used all of last week's supply.  With two people and one of them cutting back on portions, we don't consume a lot of food.

Tonight's dinner will be left-over lima beans w/sausage and brown rice, salad and maybe a veggie, green beans or sauteed squash.

Last night's veggie lasagne was not to die for.  A lot left over since it was a sizable pan.  I think I'll divide it into portions and freeze it.

    Safe travel, Joyce.

If you cut a banana in half along its length and put the flat side down, then cut the 1/2 banana into several lengths.

Cut an apple in half the traditional way, then cut slices out of the halves so you end up with a bunch of thin half circle shaped pieces of apple.

Lay the pieces out..banana, apple, banana, apple, banana and so forth.

Add some raisins for eyes and you have a worm.

I think I will catch up in the CSA stuff. Because of the storm, we're not getting a delivery this week. They say they will just give us more the rest of the weeks. We'll see.

We don't get many trick or treaters either. The houses are a little far apart, we are on a cul de sac, and a hill. But I have candy so hopefully we'll get a few. We have about 8 kids on the street so I am pretty sure we'll get those kids. And my DD is trick or treating with a group of about 8, so we'll get those. And maybe a few others. We'll see.

It's a shame, her school has been closed since last Friday, and now school will reopen ing tomorrow. Just having a turkey sandwich tonight so I won't be interrupted by the trick or treaters trying to cook. Enjoy the night everyone.

I am behind on posts, but is Laurie asking for Halloween treat ideas? The most I ever did was make cupcakes from a mix and put a candy corn face on them. I think the kids always loved them though. Lots of good tips now a days on pin interest. I follow KISS though (keep it simple stupid, I just don't lie the stupid part).

The little goblins are coming tonight...I bought candy and intend to give it all away!  Bought some dark chocolate small hershey bars for us...hehe!

I'm making cornish hens for dinner with stuffing, green peas and a salad.  I'll serve it on the screened porch at sunset.  The weather is awesome here!

    Glad everyone survived the storm!

Our trick or treat was Sat, gave 10 bags away, two little candy bars to each. So at least 80 kids. As you see my avatar I dress up! LOL.

Laurie, my son loved these: mix equal parts peanut butter, dry milk and honey. Mix, it should feel and look like play dough. Roll into balls. Then, decorate with chowmein noodles for legs, raisens for eyes. Or just roll in nuts or sprinkles. You can also dip in chocolate. A little nutrition in this treat! And, no baking, takes only a couple minutes to mix up. You can make these ahead, they actually taste better later. I used to let the kids at school decorate them by themselves. I would give each child a small zip bag of a couple of chowmein noodles and raisens But you might have to check about peanut butter allergies.

No trick or treating in our town any more.  We have no sidewalks, no street lights, almost half the lots are vacant, most unimproved, and a large percentage of the houses are vacation homes.  About twenty years ago the City passed an ordinance banning trick or treating and the Police and Fire Association started sponsoring an all city party at the Convention Center on Oct. 31.  Most of the businesses and a lot of the non-profit groups set up and decorate booths where they have games and hand out treats.  Adults and kids dress up and every one has a great time.  Most importand, the kids are safe.

    Debbie,

Thanks so much for thinking of me!

We came through the storm without so much as a power outage at our house (central NY).... Although we are now the proud owners of 2 new battery operated lanterns, a bunch of D Batteries, a couple of cases of water and a full propane tank for the grill.... lol

Wish the rest of those closer to the coast in NY, NJ and DE would have fared as well..... What a mess!

Our area had an absolutely devastating flood last year due to the remnants of hurricane Lee and areas around us got pounded by Isaac 2 weeks before Lee...Not sure we could have withstood another flood when so many are still not back in their homes from the last round!

My heart goes out to those in the areas that were so severely affected by Sandy....

Hope you all had a nice Halloween!

Moon- Your halloween costume is cute!

Deb- Glad you got your power back on and that you are OK.

Seaside- So glad you checked in too! You got lucky you didn't have problems especially living where you live. At least you have lots of back-up now in case you need it LOL! I agree my heart goes out to all those who were effected by the storms.

It is 3 am just got home we went to the casino (not where DH works) we played bingo when we got there and I won a 500.00 bingo that lasted about 2 hours then went and played the slots I didn't do good on those but DH won about 300.00 so it was a pretty good night had fun but it is late and Im tired ;-))

Kudos Debbie on the big win!

Seaside  Yes we really did get lucky on this storm.  We have a store and we have completely sold out of generators and batteries, flashlights, lamp oil etc.  We are getting calls from NJ for generators...my poor DH is having a hard time keeping up with the demand as he can only get so many, wish we could get them to NYC, although you have to run them outside, will not help the people in high rises.

Went for the steak last night, but then changed my mind and had the seafood chowder with garlic toast.  the soup was way too salty, had to drink about 3 glasses of water before bed

Tonight doing roasted red pepper soup with rueben sandwiches.

I finished my last herceptin Aug 1st, and got my port out the next week, yay!!! since then I have had two bad colds, a broken toe, and a tweeked knee. (hello body? havent you been through enough this past year and a half)

anyway, I recently discovered I can eat and enjoy salmon. I coat a fillet in olive oil, and sprinkle some garlic salt on it, and broil it on a cookie sheet on low for 10 min., then on high for 3 min, so delicious. Now I can get the healthy omega from another source besides walnuts and flax seed :O)

Making a pork roast dinner at the Senior Center for lunch today.  DH and will dine on left overs tonight.  Bought six big roasts at $1.29 a pound a couple of months ago.  Each one is big enough for me to get two lunches out of it.  Once a month I've been splurging on roast pork for lunch.  Normally I try to keep the cost of the food at about a $1.25 per serving.

Halloween was a relative non-event last night. We had about ten trick or treaters in total. DH getscso excited about giving out candy and guessing the kids costumes, so hecwas pretty disappointed with the paltry show. Then on the late news we saw that some neighborhoods in our town had lots of trees down, so parents were not letting kids go door to door for safety reasons.

My DDIL let us know that their power is back on now in their North Jersey town, earlier than expected.

    Glad yours is back, Deb.

DH's extended family lives in the Jersey shore area, have no power, and describe the terrible devastation there. Very sad. I grew up spending summers on the Jersey which will never be the same. And NYC....Yikes! Anyone know someone who is going there to run the Marathon this weekend?

Last night, while hopefully awaiting for trick or treaters, we had kale lentil soup and a little sandwich concoction....a poached egg on toasted sour dough bread (brushed with evoo and balsamic)with arugula and blue cheese. DH really liked it....I'm not so sure. Saw the recipe idea on the internet.

zumbagirl:  Congratulations on having your last herceptin treatment!  Sorry about your other issues, but smooth sailing ahead I hope!

We had a fair amount of goblins last night, but didn't give out all the candy...darn!  Now it will be sitting around to tempt me, but I got snickers, and I don't like them that much.

Went to our gym for a workout this morning...good to be back on our routine...I fell short in NC this summer...too many distractions!  Now I'm getting ready to go down to the pool for a little Vitamin D!  It's a beautiful day...temps in the high 70's...perfect pool weather!

It was 77F degrees last night when the last goblin showed up. We gave away all but 3 pieces of candy. It was a very good night.

Hi to zumbagirl. Glad the chemo is done and the port is out.

Zumbagirl  I feel the same way, my body is just rebelling in so many different ways that I never had before.

Talked with my daughter in NYC  She is going to atempt to get to her office, even though there is no power.  She will have to use a taxi and have at least three people in car. Her office is in lower Manhattan (soho) where the devestation was its worse. She is in fashion and production of buttons and trim...so if your clothes dont have any buttons next year remember "Sandy"  Her boss may just fly to Hong Kong to handle things personally.

    Eric 77deg :)

Kaara  Enjoy that pool.  I am looking into swimming at the YMCA this winter...my favorite non-impact workout...if I can afford the price.

Hope your trip was safe and speedy, Joyce!

Carrie, I don't envy the commuting weeks ahead for your DD.....and will be understanding about those fewer buttons! Gee maybe your DD can wrangle a trip to Hong Kong herself while the city dries out!

Always a dilemma to decide whether to get Halloween candy that you like or do not like in case there are leftovers.....in my case there are few kinds I don't like. ;)

DS2 ( who had his Halloween 32nd birthday yesterday) suggested that we start to give out FULL SIZE candy bars and we will get lots more kids once the word is out. :) Hmmmmm....Reminds me of the family who gave out candy apples in my childhood neighborhood....that was until the razor blade/apples issues surfaced!

    Have a good evening all......

Tonight is my small dinner party. A friend is in Boston for a surgery tomorrow along with her partner. Now I could not let them sit in a hotel the night before surgery! So they are coming to dinner.

First course: butternut squash soup with goat cheese and chives

Second course: Julia Child's lamb stew over mashed potatoes, served with roasted vegetables.

Third course: Apple tart on puff pastry with hand whipped cream

We are serving a beautiful Cote du Rhone wine, and sparkling cider. Perhaps my friend will want a mocktail. She can't drink at all the night before surgery of course.

The lamb stew smell has just filled the house. I was already hungry, but that smell is making me ravinous!

Susan - your meal sounds delightful, I'm sure your friends will enjoy every bite!

Joyce - can't wait to see you!

Lacey - I remember candy apples and popcorn balls, so yummy!

I've never been to New Jersey, but I think of it as a very small state, a crowded suburb of NYC.  It's amazing how many people vacationed on the Jersey shore and have fond memories of their experiences.  A friend who has lived in NJ told me recently that DH and I should visit the state, that it has a lot to offer.  Well, I guess we'll need to wait quite a while.

Dinner tonight will be catfish filet for me, panfried in a small amt. of EVOO and butter.  Scallops for dh with a lemon butter sauce.  Sauteed squash and tossed salad.  The squash are really cute little veggies.  Some of them elongated and others shaped like stars, all two-toned yellow and green.  From the CSA.

Lacey, that sandwich concoction you described sounded good to me.

Carrie- You must of been very busy during the storm selling all the supplies and probably will be for weeks to come thats great you can help people who need things like that. It does scare me to think some people will use the generators and not have proper ventilation just to stay warm.

Zumba- Congrats on finishing herceptin and port removal!!

Kaara- Lucky you, that you get to go sit in the sun by the pool that sounds so wonderful to me right now! I thought I would dodge eating candy too but during bingo last night they had baskets of candy on each table and not only did I eat too many I brought some home.Uggh!

Joyce- Wow! You can actually post while in the sky?? I did not know that. Have a safe flight!

Anyone have any idea's on cooking a pork steak? It's like a ham steak but its pork, now I know ham and pork are the same but this is pork not ham. I know this sounds confusing but if anyone who speaks my language and knows what Im talking about (lol) have any ideas?

Pork steaks are very popular in St. Louis.  My BIL who grew up in St. Louis cooks the steaks on the grill.  They're usually tender because they have a bit of fat.

Let us know how you cook it and how it turns out.

Carole- So if i just grill it on the stove it would be fine too? its thin so maybe about 10 minutes per side?

Carol, NJ is a small state, but very populated. It has the least amount of open land than any state in the union. The northern half is pretty much a suburb of NY, and the southern half a suburb of Phila. Several people I work with commute from NJ. And I grew up spending all my summers at the Jersey shore. I just love it down there. It's my favorite place. I am 49 and this is by far the worst the shore has ever been hit by a storm in my memory. But I guarantee you they will be up and ready for vacationers at the beginning of next summer. I'd bet my last dollar on it. Their season is so short, basically July and August. They have to make all their money in two months of the year. It just blows my mind.

Still not making anything for dinner. I am in such a funk. Just had a turkey sandwich again. My DD runs to dance class after school, my DH works late, and I just can't motivate myself to cook something. I have to get out of this funk.

  • Lacey12
    Lacey12 Member Posts: 2,895

Kay, I get the funk...and had it myself today (forgiving myself for not cooking dinner for the first time in many weeks!). So when DH came home I suggested we could either have leftover kale soup or order a 5 dollar large cheese pizza from Comella's and I'd doctor it up with onions, peppers and mushrooms. We opted for the second choice and it was fine along with a fresh salad, and a J Lohr Merlot that I picked up at Trader's yesterday.

Have to say tho, Susan, I wish I were dining at your house tonight...right down to the Cote du Rhone! A lovely way to support your friend.....

Carole, NJ is an unusual state...definitely has to offset stereotypes. I grew up there (outside Philly)and defected to MA for grad school. It is called the Garden State for a reason...there is a lot of green there,( and wonderful produce!) but no one sees it when they travel down the NJ Turnpike, which is pretty unattractive.

The NJ shore area is fun, but also built up more now than when I enjoyed it. Long Beach Island was just developing then, and in recent years has been quite built up. I get a kick out of the LBI ovals on people's car bumpers. We used to drive down there on a Friday night and sleep in the dunes...sounds wilder than it was. :) People love the board walk atmosphere in many of the shore towns as I did growing up, but I have grown more accustomed to the more natural shore line of my adopted state. I recall my first drive to the Cape (think I have told you this before!), when my friends and I kept looking for a boardwalk, never finding it! I hope you are right, Kay, that the shore areas are ready for next summer....the devastation is terrible. We will probably want to visit there with our now NJ grandkids. DBIL paints a grim picture of his town near Asbury Park.

Carole, As to your concept of NJ being a suburb of NYC, my husband (who grew up in North Jersey) recalled the description of NJ as a "beer keg tapped on both ends....NYC in the north and Philly in the south". There are however, nice farmlands in the middle! :) And I have been surprised to see how pretty the hills of my DS2 and DDIL's New Jersey town are...almost like some New England towns.

Debbie, I've never cooked pork steak any way but on the grill, and I've cooked pork steak a lot. It's one of our favorite bbq meats. I'm sure you could broil it indoors as well, I just never have.

As a midwesterner, the first time I went to new Jersey, I was simply amazed at how lovely a state it is. I really had no idea.

Susan, that settles it, I'm definitely coming to your house for dinner :-)

My pork steak was delicious I grilled it on my cast iron grill pan about 5 minutes per side then put it in a 350 oven for about 10 minutes it was perfect and tender.  Also steamed some red potatoes, cabbage and yellow squash together. Yummm!

Kay- Sorry you have been in a funk lately. Sending you big hugs! I Hope you feel better soon.

Joyce- As much as I fly you would think I would know that! ;-))

Nancy- I think bq sauce on those would be delish too!

    Zumba, congrats on finishing Herceptin.

    Susan, dinner sounds delish.

Debbie, glad the pork steak worked out for you. I make them like pork chops too.

Lacey, sometimes you just gotta order out.

Joyce, glad you are on your way home and that you have electric when you get there.

    Kay, hang in there love.

Carrie, keeping busy is good. Wish your daughter good luck going in.

KAARA, just FYI, it was a whole 32 degrees here last nite! LOL! Enjoy the sun.

Eric, three piecs was pretty good guessing, unless you gave the last couple of kids big handfuls! LOL

My dinner was leftover chili. Gotta freeze the rest So I don't get sick of it.

The thing I am wondering is, how will recovery from Sandy compare to recovery from Katrina? Did they learn anything helpful? Is the east coast better at organizing? Enquireing minds want to know.

Much love to all. Stay safe, warm and dry.
