didnt care for hells kitchen either, I dont like watching something that has to be bleeped out every 5 seconds-ughh!
had a nice lunch out with friends that drove down to visit us, thankfully they bring there motorhome so i didnt have to clean or cook this weekend ha! Then going to dinner with them tonight so I didnt have to do a thing today yippeee!

Today I went to visit my lake house. We get the keys tomorrow, yeahhhh!!! While I was out there, I found a very dangerous place...lol...a very, very good homemade ice cream shop "The Flying Cow" in Hamstead, NH. I must admit, I had a hot fudge sundae for lunch. Not something I would do very often, being diabetic. But it was worth every bite, ridiculously good.
Laurie - are you familiar with this place? I know really good ice cream stands are so common in New England and I don't "brag" about one very often. I might never have Friendly's again after eating this hot fudge!!!
After visiting with my new neighbors for a while and enjoying my indulgence, I did a little shopping (daughter's birthday is Wednesday) then came home and ate a nice salad.
Teka - I do like Hell's Kitchen with all its craziness. I'll have to tune in to MasterChef. We're watching Next Food Network Star right now.
Kay - when we lived on the east coast and flew to Hawaii, we would stop in Vegas or LA, spend a couple of nights, then continue on to Hawaii. It made the trip seem a little less daunting. Nothing helps the return trip, though! You just really don't want to leave
Debbie - I can see how Waikiki would be great people watching. My favorite thing on Oahu was the Polynesian Cultural Center. We stayed at Ko Olina (southwest of Honolulu) when we were there.

LuvRVing, I went to Oahu last year and stayed at Ko Olina, beautiful! Never got to the cultural center but it was recommended, next trip we will. My DH's brother lives in kapolei.

I'm still here! I haven't had any interesting recipes to share, I've been making the same old things. Tonight was the old faithful and fast shake and bake pork chops with egg noodles and pea pods. Kids ate it up which is why I love to make it- it also only takes 20 minutes to put together.
Michelle- I don't know of that ice cream place? But we did go get ice cream today at our favorite place. It's called Beech Hill Farm and it is a farm with cows, chickens, goats, sheep, horses etc etc that the kids can look at and stick their hands in and pet. But they have the best ice cream EVER. I got myself a kiddie death by chocolate and was in heaven. It was my youngest first time having an ice cream cone, we just about gave him a bath at the hand washing station after, it was awesome.
As for Hawaii- we went to Seattle Wa. a few years ago and when we landed I said to my husband, could you imagine getting on another plane and flying some more right now? I bet it would be worth it if you could do 2 weeks though. Otherwise, give me Aruba! 3 hours non stop from Boston:D

Laurie - I see they serve Blake's Ice Cream. When I was in high school, there was a Blake's Ice Cream Shop in Nashua near where I worked. I used to go there frequently for strawberry sundaes...mmmm!
I remember we went to a place similar to what you describe near Clinton, MA a few years ago. It's always fun for the kids.

It is Blakes, but for some reason it tastes better there than other places that have Blakes? They are alos the only ones that have the Death by Chocolate that I have found, whenI was pregnant we went there a lot

Teka- I always thought "brown" sprinkles and "rainbow" sprinkles were the same- but after tasting my sons cone they are not! Brown are chocolate and rainbow are kind of fruity? I've never had round sprinkles but I bet there is a difference there too!

Does anyone else call sprinkles jimmies? Or is that just a Phila. thing? Rainbow are the best IMO.

Laurie - great pictures, especially of your son with his cone. I did a little more research of the Flying Cow ice cream shop and they don't make all their flavors - they use Richardson for some. I guess one should be suspicious of any place that has like 40 flavors, it's highly unlikely a small shop "hand-makes" that many flavors. But, it doesn't really matter - it's still yummy!

I was just about to correct Laurie. All New Englanders call chocolate "sprinkles" jimmies. My husband was so confused a few years ago when they asked him if he'd like jimmies on his ice cream. (Midwesterners don't know what you are talking about when referencing jimmies, packies, tonic or bubblers).

Teka - I would find your ice cream stand easier to resist...I am not a fan of soft serve. I prefer "hard" ice cream. The good news is that I'm not currently a big ice cream eater. I have my occasional ice cream, get it out of my system, then I can go for months before having it again. I am a fan of Edy's no-sugar-added frozen fruit bars. Just the right size and terrific on a hot summer evening.

I think those little adornments on a cone or sundae vary in name based on where you are from.... In NY... or at the least, upstate, we call them sprinkles... and, no matter the name, they are good!!
Here's what I found...
"So what IS the difference between sprinkles and jimmies? Actually they're the same thing, it just depends on where you're from. If you're a resident of Philadelphia, Boston and many parts of New England, you might ask for jimmies if you want those tiny cylindrical candies on your ice cream. New Yorkers and a majority of other people call them sprinkles.
So where does the jimmies name come from? Popular legend has it that the Just Born candy company in Bethlehem, PA began producing sprinkles in the 1930s and, since a gentleman named Jimmy ran the sprinkles machine, the product was naturally nicknamed after its maker.
Some people maintain that sprinkles are multicolored and jimmies specifically refer to the chocolate variety. But no matter what you call them or how you use them, they seem to make everything taste a little better. Here in Lancaster County, we call them sprinkles, but we'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the great sprinkles vs. jimmies debate!"

Hi all!
I just wanted to say hi to my fellow foodies! I've been super busy lately and haven't had much time to check in here. I wish I had something, recipe-wise, to contribute, but I can't remember what I;ve been cooking the past few weeks! Nothing too exciting, if I can't even remember, right?
My husband is away (again) so tonight I made the kids and I grilled cheese sandwiches. Sliced strawberries, baby carrots for them and red grapefruit for me. I never used to like grapefruit, but lately I've been eating them like crazy! Ican't get enough of them! If I didn't know any better, I would think I was pregnant
My husband and I went to Hawaii for our honeymoon (Oahu, Kauai and Maui), and we went with the kids in 2009 for Christmas, right after I finished chemo. That time we went to Maui and the Big Island. So beautiful there. I was terrified that the long flight would be a nightmare with the kids, but it really wasn't that bad. We will be spending Christmas this year there, too, but just Maui this time. I am lucky that my kids are good travelers. It makes it so much easier, and so much enjoyable.
Lauire, your son is a cutie pie! I could eat him up...as well as his ice cream cone! Yum!

All of the descriptions of Hawaii sound SO wonderful!! Never been but, it is on my bucket list AND now that I have quit smoking VERY doable (NEVER could have made the flight before)!! Hope to get there one day soon!!

LOL, jimmies or sprinkles! We always called them jimmies, once my son would talk he would ask, who's Jimmy? So not we say sprinkles more often than not, it goes back and forth. It;s like, what did we get? (when I check the mail.) Bills....who's Bill? Kids.
Hubby was home late tonight, I fed the kids crap- nuggets and tater tots. Bad Mom I know, but I was tired! I marinated chicken in Olive Garden salad dressing and we are about to grill it and put it on rolls with cucumber, tomato and some fresh mozzarella cheese. I am hoping it will taste as good as it sounds!

Seaside - thanks, I did get the keys today. Things are NOT going so well on the Missouri side, though. DH called to tell me that everything will not fit in the truck and he is going to have to go back to get the rest of the stuff by towing a uHaul. I really, really should have made him go with the national moving company. As it's going to turn out, it would have been cheaper and much less hassle. Everything had been going so well, I guess a hitch in the plan was inevitable. I'm just bummed that it's this, as it's more work for him. On the other hand, at least 10 people offered help but he was insistent on doing it all himself. Ughhh!!!
My daughter's birthday is Wednesday so I watched the kiddies tonight so she and her DH could go out to dinner. We had Dreamfields pasta with marinara, apples, cukes and red bell pepper. The kids were happy and now they are all tucked in bed.

Hello, new to this thread but love to cook, garden and travel when I am not working!! Hawaii is nice, Kauai is our favorite island. We are planning on going back in February, we were there this February. I hate the flight but love the destination. We had BBQ ribs yesterday that were very good. I grilled asapragus from the garden, basted with a little olive oil, sprinkled with Hawaii red sea salt. My DH and I are in a ice cream funk. We have a small cone almost every night. Todays flavor was Tin Roof!! Plan on stopping in more often.

A cross-country move NEVER is easy but, all will eventually fall into place...
Just WISH our guys would say OK to help when offered..... I think sometimes, trying to handle it all themselves (even though WE wish it was different) is THEIR way of trying to regain their sense of control in a situation that feels totally out of their control!!
In any case... HE is doing what he feels he needs to do to get through this!! YOU need to do the same!!! Please know that we are all here, holding your hand, as you begin this part of your journey!!

Dinner was delish! Seaside-You can actually go to Olive Garden and buy the dressing right there, it's not too expensive and it makes a great marinade in addition to salad. Also thanks for helping to take the guilt away from feeding the kids crap
I don't do it often so I guess it's ok. It sure was nice to not cook and plop them in front of the tv with Dora and I checked out for 15 minutes and came back to clean plates, yay!Yuck on your hubby having to go back out there! I am shaking my head, right beside you I am sure, it that craziness of it. Sometimes it's just what happens. I would have done the same thing to try to save some money and then said, doah!!!! Today- YUCK!

Im not sure if its the same thing but I think here on the west coast we call them dots? what ever you call them you can call them good- All this talk about ice cream and hot fudge is making me crave an ice cream now!

I made blackened cod for dinner and gave hubby left over salsa chicken i had in the freezer because he is not a big fish eater made some fresh green beans with bacon, onions, garlic and almonds was pretty good. now im debating weather i want to run to town to get a ice cream from dairy queen yummmm!

I can remember going to our local DQ waaaaayyyyyy back in my high school days.... Getting a big ol' soft serve vanilla cone (or sometimes the vanilla/chocolate twist) coated with chocolate sprinkles... The whole bunch of us sitting outside on a retaining wall, talking and eating our ice cream!!
Not even sure we have a DQ still here but, those were the days!!!

Sherrill do you take tamoxifen??? If so ask your onc about grapefruit, I was told it can negate the effectiveness of tamoxifen and a lot of other prescriptions, at least I am pretty sure it was grapefruit... Sorry to be a buzz kill

Whenn we moved back, we went with a national co. and everything went really smoothly. What a difference. Hope everything finishes up well and you are all settled in together very soon.
This DQ talk really has me wanting some. But I am on heavy steroids right now and supposed to stay away from sugar until I get off them. My favorite DQ is not the jimmies (or sprinkles or dots), but the chocolate coating. I was always fascinated watching them dip the ice cream into the hot chocolate and then see it instantly freeze.
Going to Trader Joe's and picking up a small schicken to roast for dinner tonight. Haven't been doing much cooking lately. Or at least as someone said, nothing exciting because I can't even remember anything I've cooked. Hopefully the chicken will be good tonight.
Getting ready for the heat here tomorrow. It is supposed to be a record breaker, supposed to get up to 98. Why does it seem we always get this weather at the end of the school year. Most of the schools around here are not air conditioned and there will be kids getting sick in school with that kind of heat and humidity.
