Yeah!  We have power.  Our daughter called around 5:30 and asked us to meet them all at a Chinese Restaurant, so we left, had dinner and just walked in the door to...lights!!!  I hope the power stays on, it's windier now than it was all day.  We maybe got 3 inches of rain and it really was never all that bad.   I thought it looked like upstate NY would get a ton of rain, so I am not surprised.  You could see really heavy rain bands all the up to Syracuse.

Laurie - block party!  Great idea and so nice of you!  Sounds like you have a great neighborhood.

Lena -  hope you are healing from the rads.  I hate hearing those horror stories...you have to wonder why some people burn so badly and others just get a little red.  I guess it's the same thing with sunburns, you just don't think about it.

I wonder how Kay is doing...

Hope everyone is having a good evening.

    Kay and Michelle,

Yay for power being restored!! Wow, Kay, That's a TON of rain in a short period of time!

Glad to hear things are getting back to normal for everyone!

Sat in upstate NY was beautiful and our carribean party was great fun.  My daughter and I went to the grocery store and kind of dreamed up a pasta dish that would be carribean inspired....orzo pasta, mango, red onion, cucumber, black beans, fresh cilantro and a sesame ginger dsg (bottled made by our local grocery store  Wegmans)  everyone loved it and it disappeared.

Sunday very windy and cold but not a lot of rain.  Daughter left to go back to the city, we didnt want her to go but her boyfriend really needed to get to job on Mon.  Travel was all good on the main roads and there was power when she got home.  She said just a lot of debris in the streets, and of course they need to get the transit system back up and running so she can get to work today.

Now to get ready for my son to come home this weekend.  told me he expects some good home cooking.

Happy Birthday Chabba!  I hope you are enjoying your birthday dinner right this very minute!

Long day today, I spent it all at my mom's.  FairPoint was scheduled to show up to turn on her phone service some time between 8 and 5.  Geez, that's a pretty wide window, and the guy didn't show up until 3:00 or so.  He made a phone call on mom's new phone and said "you're all set."  What he failed to tell me is that the line isn't fully provisioned, so I spent another hour trying to program all the family phone numbers, which are all long distance.  And nothing worked.  I finally recognized the pattern of failure and gave up, and called them when I got home.  That's when I was told that the line wouldn't be fully provisioned until midnight tonight.  What a stupid process!!!

And I spent an hour in discussion with the director of my mom's facility.  I am guessing mom will get top-notch attention for at least the next week or two...lol.  And I think the communication in the nursing department will improve.  And while I was there, the psych NP came in and so I got to meet her.  She is very nice and she agreed to start mom on the anti-depressants this evening.  I hope it gets rid of the panic attacks, we'll see.

I did go out for lunch, had some great French onion soup and salad.  Then I took mom for ice cream and we shopped for a few things she needed.  And I made peace with her former roommate.  So all in all, it was a productive day.  Now I am mentally exhausted...LOL!

Dinner is each "man" for himself, all two of us!  We have some leftovers in the fridge and they need to be cleared out.  And I'm not hungry yet, but Rick was starved - he worked on a remodeling project at my daughter's house all day.

Laurie - are you still running on a generator? If so, this is just like camping, right? Except you have your beds!

    Happy Birthday Chabba!

Michelle it sounds like a long tiring day. Glad you got things accomplished though. I'm sure your mom is too. I had a very long yucky day myself. I'll admit all this house stuff has me exhausted. And not having an oven is a PITA. Thank God for our neighbors who got their power back. It meant hot showers for us and baths for the boys. Plus they fed our kids while we showered and sent us home with left over pulled pork for sandwiches. They were a life saver.

I hope the rest of you ladies are making out ok.

Laurie - have they given you any idea when you might get power back?  Many years ago my oven broke and we had to wait for a part.  I remember baking a birthday cake for one of my kids in an electric frying pan.  I got very creative with what I could "bake" in that pan!!!  At this point, you should pack up your camper and head off for the campground - it probably has power and would be way more fun...LOL!  You could probably use the "getaway from it all!"

Michelle- You are right- I could cook dinner in the camper!  The kids today asked me for pasta for lunch.  I told them I couldn't boil water.  Ok.  Grilled cheese.  Sorry the top of the stove doesn't work.  Chicken nuggets?  Sorry no oven.

My son actually said- I guess I'll have peanut butter AGAIN.

It will all work out though.  Hopefully sooner rather than later. As for if they gave me any idea- yes.  This afternoon, it is now past 12-  :/  So I am guessing whenever. As far as baking a cake in a pan....WOW!  Half the time I bake a cake in the oven it doesn't turn out right, I am impressed!

Laurie  I went through a 3 mo kitchen renovation with no stove.  i had a hot plate type thing for my stovetop, but had the mocrowave, and the grill.

I taught my kids to make grilled cheese (when they were too young to use the stove) by making toast, butter it, put the cheese on and microwave for about 30sec, whala instant grilled cheese. not quite the nice fried one on the stove, but they could do it themselves.

Michelle.  your mom is so lucky to have you, not all children take the time to care for their parents, or to even visit when they are placed in a home.  My parents are still with us and pretty self sufficient, but my dad had two hip replacements and my mom had her knees done..so all of us kids got together (5 of us) and remodeled their house to make it handicapped accessible, new bathroom, widened some doors new kitchen cabinets etc....very lg project but worth it .  Since the cancer my mom still wants to take care of me...ha ha ..always a mom!

Carrie - my sister lives less than 5 minutes from my mom's place and hasn't visited or called, or checked on her at all.  I hear you.  Of course, she hasn't called or checked on me, either.  I'm not holding out any hope that it will ever change.  She'll show up at mom's funeral.  What a great thing you did for your parents!

I think my kids would do something like that for us.  They've been awesome through this whole ordeal and I think it's brought us all closer together...well yes, both physically (because we moved) and emotionally.  Some good comes of all this.

    Seaside Memories,

It is 1/4 cup of the prepared kind of mustard, not the powder.  I prefer it with honey mustard but dijon works good too.  A hearty, grainy mustard might also work, but not the regular yellow stuff.  It mixes with the brown sugar and makes a night glaze.

Home from the marathon chemo session #6 - a full 6 hours by the time all is said and done!  I will get Neulasta tomorrow as WBC went from 12 to 3.  The PA wasn't going to order it, but I was pretty insistent as it seems I had a pretty big drop and I don't have 9 points left to cover this treatment, let alone 2 more.  I must say that they really listen to and address my concerns!

One of my daughters came home with us and is staying for dinner.  She wants DH to make grilled pizza so that is the plan.  I probably won't eat that much anyways.

Doing well, sitting on my sofa relaxing!

Steaks on the grill, real (hopefully fluffy) baked potatoes with sour cream and chives, caesar salad, and apple pie from the apple farm we just discovered that is five minutes from our house...that's what's for dinner!  Tomorrow morning Rick has promised to go back to the apple farm at 11:00 and pick up a few fresh blueberry muffins made with the little deep blue Maine wild blueberries.  They bake them in the morning and have them ready to go around 11.  This place just opened, literally 5 minutes away.  All local products - honey, jams and preserves, pies, freshly picked apples, pumpkins..mmm!

I love this place more and more every single day!!!

Haven't had much time to post lately but, I do read when I can!

Happy belated birthday, Chabba! Hope you had a great time!

Thanks for clarifying your recipe, Amidala! I wrote it down and took a guess that it was 1/4 cup but wanted to be sure! Can't wait to try it!!!!

    Michelle,

Six down and two to go!! Good for you for pushing for that shot!! And good for your doctors for listening!

Love mashed potatoes and there is nothing like the 'real' deal! Love places like the one you discovered! Local and fresh!

    Enjoy that muffin!!

Michelle you are almost there.....yeah...eat all that good red meat to boost your blood!  They always gave me the neulasta, no matter what the numbers said. good for you in being proactive.  What a blessing to have that place so close toyou with all the goodies....ahhhh I would weigh 300 lbs!  I just picked some apples off my tree but they are sooo small, it will take me all day to peel them to make anything.  Maybe just some simple turnovers.

I am so jealous that your husband can cook.  My ultimate dream would be to have a personal chef.  My husband only passes through the kitchen to get from one room to another LOL

Carrie - my husband NEVER cooked for 30 years, I kid you not!!!  He never made coffee until the last summer that I was working, 2 years ago, when I was traveling and he finally decided he might want to have a cup when I wasn't home!   When we moved in June and I started chemo, we got a new grill.  And that, as they say, was that!  He's branched out to bacon and omelets, he can grill anything including veggies, he'll go to the store and get whatever he needs to make something he really wants to make.  I almost don't recognize him...LOL!  And I'm OK with this new man!!!

And it's probably a good thing this little apple place is open from now until Thanksgiving, because that apple pie was to die for!  And I had one of the apples - huge, crispy and yummy!  Can't wait to eat one with some nice sharp cheddar!

And oh, he has reneged on his promise of a blueberry muffin tomorrow morning...he's going to play golf!  I may have to make my own muffin run Cry

Seaside - thanks, yesssss!!!  I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!  I wasn't going to let them get away with skipping the Neulasta shot.  We tried that once and it was a big failure, so I was pretty insistent that we not skip it this time.  They are very good at paying attention to my requests and understanding my reasoning.

Michelle- congrats on getting through number 6- two more to go!  Sounds like you had fun with it too.  My Mom always said going to her chemo with my father was so boring so I went with her most of the time.  We always managed to have fun together and get some good laughs in.  We even did alot of wedding planning during her chemo.

We had lost power again yesterday if you can believe it but we got it back after about 5 hours.  I was ready to cry when it went out.  I need to put all these natural disasters behind me! My Dad dropped off more veggies from his garden today.  After not being able to cook in the house for quite awhile I tried some new recipe's.  I did a ranch chicken thing in the oven- nothing impressive and I won't do it again.  So not worth passing on.  I also took some eggplant, sliced it and browned it in a skillet, just slightly then put it an a pyrex dish, salt and peppered it a little evoo then put some bread crumbs, layers of fresh tomato, some more s &p another sprinkle of crumbs some fresh basil and topped it with mozzarella cheese.  That was delish!

Michelle- I will have to search for my blueberry muffin recipe that I have.  I am not a baker, but this recipe is fool proof, meaning I can make it.  It has a cinnamon crumb topping and is wonderful.  I'll see if I can find it and pass it on :)

    Michelle,

I am with you a nice sharp cheddar with an apple pie.... One of my fondest memories of my Grandmother (and something I posted here eons ago) was her saying ' A piece of apple pie without some cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze'...... She's been gone for 20 years but, I don't believe anyone in my family would DARE serve apple pie without cheese....lol

    Laurie,

Yes!!!! That is the same recipe that I use and OMG is it ever good!!!

Thanks, Laurie!  That recipe looks really yummy!

I used to make a recipe that I found in a Boston Globe Cookbook from 25 years ago.  The recipe was from the Jordan Marsh store bakery but I found it here:

    http://divaofdining.blogspot.com/2008/07/blast-from-past-jordan-marsh-blueberry.html

I had pretty much stopped baking because I am diabetic and DH doesn't need the calories.  But these days I am thinking life is too short to not eat muffins and apple pie once in a while!  I can use Splenda instead of sugar and they'll still be good.

Seaside - that's a great story about your Grandma!  I'm definitely adding the cheddar to my next piece of pie.  Gee, if I add cheese to the pie, I really could justify having it for breakfast, don't you think?  Lots of food groups covered there!

ok- I have never had cheese with apple pie.  But this Thanksgiving, or the next time I make pie, maybe this fall?  I will eat cheese with it!  I know I've mentioned on here before, when I have brown gravy I have sharp cheese with it.  You dunk it n the gravy and oh- Yum!  I am assuming it is a "french thing" since I grew up on it, and my family is very french Canadian.  Michelle- I think you said you are french Canadian too- do you do it?

    Laurie,

I remember you posting about the brown gravy and cheese! In fact, I think it was in response to your post that I posted about the cheese with pie!

I think we will both have something new to try at the next big holiday!! I will give cheese along side gravy a try and you can see how you like cheese with apple pie!

    Michelle,

I'm thinking you are definitely onto something with the pie and cheese for breakfast!! lol

By the way.... Sharp cheddar along-side some apple wedges or grapes, is equally delicious!
