So...whats for dinner?

Hauntie.. especially for you.
My mother in law made this awesome very light, cucumber, onion and tomatoe salad.
She'd slice the vegetable and put a big spoonful of mayo in a bowl and add vinegar, fresh spices and milk to the mayo.. it would thicken a bit (i guess the milk and vinegar were working together on this). Made with fresh oregano.. it is awesome. i love olive oil too.

Great day at pickety place ladies! We are totally rained in...have a river going down our backyard. My DH and I with best friends have plans to stay in and watch the buffalo bills play today...hmmmm and maybe drink a little wine. We put up 18 quarts of salsa yesterday...what a blast.. all us women cutting and gossiping in the kitchen. My dear friend brought her 97 year old mom and she got right in on the gossip and her opions on men and relationships...tooo funny!!
Apple I do something similar using sour cream and chives, but i also love the oil and vinegar (or italian dsg) its alll good.
I made omelets for breakfast with the homemade salsa and sour cream on top, my DH favorite....and yes I am buttering him up..need some help in the house today.

Have a great time all you going to Pickety Place! Wish I could go too.
bedo, everyone in my family, except me, is a big fan of Indian food. My tastes have changed so much since chemo though, I have to give it another try. Hope you enjoyed yours and hope you enjoy your dinner with friend tonight!

Here we are! From the left, Deborye, then Hauntie standing over her shoulder, Laurie, me, and Joycek
Facebook says this is a public link and anyone should be able to see all the pictures:

The food was fabulous, the company was even better, and we have to do it again. And Deb, you are just too funny! I know another Deb and I swear you are her twin, at least humor-wise!!!
And oh, "Miss Deborye" is celebrating not just a birthday, but a "landmark" birthday on Thursday!
Here are a few other pictures in case the link doesn't work:
Not sure what happened here. Laurie and Joyce heard my countdown but Lynda and Deb must have seen something more interesting...lol
And Debbie - were your ears burning?

Pickety Place was wonderful and meeting everyone there was amazing. I really enjoyed meeting everyone face to face and getting to know each other a little more. The food was just the right portion size and very very yummy. I still can't believe I had never heard of the place before? Thank you ladies for such a nice get together!
My DH ended up doing pretty well all on his own. BOTH boys took a nap, he took them out to lunch first and it sounds like they had a lot of fun. When I came home they were all piled on the couch together watching Nascar and quite content. Success! Dinner is going to be whatever someone grabs. I'm still not hungry so no big dinner tonight.

awesome pics you guys...you are all gorgeous and now I will know who I am talking to!

Speaking of chili...this is in my fridge:
I make mine using an old Pillsbury Family Cookbook recipe from the late 60's. I have a few modifications, so I'll share.
2 pounds ground beef - I use really lean, like 93%
1/2 pound Mexican beef chorizo - sometimes hard to find, but look where they keep the brats and other sausages. It comes in a plastic sleeve. In Kansas City and maybe other areas (but not here) you can buy it in bulk in the butcher shop area.
2 onions, sliced
5 16 ounce cans tomatoes. Use the kind you like, I use a mix of the ones with basil, garlic and oregano and the ones with jalapenos.
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon dry mustard
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons cocoa powder
2 small cloves garlic
2 cans red kidney beans, drained
Brown all the meat with the onions, then add all the rest of the ingredients and simmer for a couple of hours. Add the kidney beans and simmer for another 30 minutes. Yes, it makes a really big pot! Don't skip the cocoa powder, it's my secret ingredient

Looks Yummy, I will not have any supper tonight, still full from lunch.

good luck Patriots My Bills had their first loss today...bummer!
My DH and I are not big on the beans in chili so I add like 1/2 a can and substitute corn. I have to remember the chorizo though and the cocoa powder.

That chilli looks good! I was looking for a good chilli recipe. Great pics! I'm glad everyone had a wonderful time. I had the pleasure of meeting Hauntie (my surgery buddy!) in NJ with ChrissyB and a couple of other women from the boards, so I understand how fun htat can be.
Had whole wheat rotinin and meatballs and a salad for dinner.
Enjoy your Sunday night everyone. I have an appointment with my PS tomorrow and also a simulation for rads. I hope the ps gives the okay for rads to start. The sooner you start, the sooner you're finished, right?

Okay girls, I am coming out of hiding! I have been reading this thread for awhile now and have enjoyed the shared recipes as well as shared stories. After seeing the pic of your luncheon at Pickety Place I just couldn't hide any longer! I just love when we are able to meet each other in real life after sharing such a bond online through bc.org. This is a terrific group of ladies and I appreciate this thread very much.
I also made chili, however, I use a McCormacks seasoning packet, ground beef, ranch style beans and tomato sauce. I'd prefer to use diced tomatoes, but the DH is picky picky. It is done from start to finish in about 20 minutes. I was going to make cornbread, but the date on the package was June 2010! Yikes! So chili with shredded cheese, sour cream and diced onions will have to do. I am really loving our fall-like weather here in Nor Cal today...

Great time at Pickety Place today. Good food and great company. The only problem was, with the set seating times, there's no time to linger and chat. Did you notice, we were the last ones to leave the dinng room? I'd love to go back in the spring when the weather's warmer and the flowers are blooming.
On the ride home I told Michelle and Joyce about this top 10 list my brother and sister-in-law came up with to try to ease the pain of me having to part with my long french braid. I couldn't remember all the things on it. It did help to put the temporary hair loss from chemo in perspective.
Ten Good Things About Temporary Hair Loss
10. Your drains won't clog. (sink not surgery )
9. No one will know you're going gray.
8. Money saved on shampoo, brushes, and elastics can be used for the
slot machines.
7. You can get an all over tan.
6. There's no place for bats to land.
5. You can sell it to Hair Club for Men (see reason 8).
4. You can get a much better phrenology reading.
3. You can make it through airports unaccosted by Hari Krishnas,
because they'll think you're one of them.
2. It will grow back.
*1. Nicholas will know his Auntie Lynda because of big hugs, rather
than old photographs.
Nicholas is my nephew and my only Godchild. He was the first baby born into our family in a long, long time. He was 10 months old when I was diagnosed. The second question I asked my BS, after she gave me the news, was "will I live long enough for Nicholas to remember me." He graduates from high school in June. Thanks again, for a lovely afternoon ladies. Count me in for any other gatherings in our area.

Welcome, Lexi4! So glad you came out from behind the curtains!!!
Kay - good luck with the PS, hope you get to start rads this week! Yes, if you get started now, you'll be done before Thanksgiving...woohoo!!!!
Carrie - adding corn to chili sounds like a good idea. That little bit of sweet would add a nice balance. Gonna have to try that!
Sunday night = popcorn for dinner! Just as soon as the Pats finish off the Raiders! And the Chiefs won today, now that is a miracle!

Hey - did anyone else notice - this thread has reached 100 pages. Wow, Laurie - look what you started.
Michelle - the chilli recipe looks great. Actually the picture of the chilli looks even better. Carrie, I'm not a big fan of beans in chilli either. I like the idea of adding some corn instead. If I stay on this thread long enough, you gals may get me back in the kitchen cooking again.

Hauntie - I did notice I was posting on page 99!
So when I got married (the first time) in 1968, I did know how to cook the food my parents liked. But this was my bible. It's a 3 ring binder-style and my kids messed with it badly when they were little. So I paid about $8 for a replacement from eBay. I still use it for a few faves, like pan fried chicken and the chili recipe.

Yes, let's keep it going!
So here is the recipe for keeping 4 kids happy back in the late 50's when there wasn't much money...
My mom made popcorn in one of these on the gas stove. She made each of us one pan full...yes, that's right...we each got our own "batch!"
And to drink, an American classic:
I think it was 5 cents a package back in those days!
And then we all settled down to watch TV:
I make mine in one of these:
And I can eat the whole thing most of the time, although I do share a bit with DH...just a bit, though!

Just made a grilled cheese sandwich for supper using my new bacon press, purchased at Pickety Place. I'd been looking for one forever, to use for grilled sandwiches. Works great. Thanks ladies for waiting patiently while I stood in that looooong check out line. Didn't I just say that if I hung around on this thread long enough I'd start cooking again. See, it's happening already0

Debbie6122 - did you make the braciole and gravy today?0

Hey Joyce, I made it until 9:00. I think I can go to bed now. I just have to finish up the last few moves on the Words with Friends game I'm playing with my cousin. Of course, my eyes are no longer at have mast and my head is no longer nodding towards my chest. Right after the game is finished, I'm going to get off the computer, lower the lights and try to get back to that sleepy place.

It's 9:23...I am counting down the minutes to 9:30...lol!

I had the best day yesterday.
Years ago in the first part of the 80s i was a chefette. I wanted to be a restaurateur and my 'mentor' of sorts said i needed to learn to cook. I went and begged for a job at a local privately owned, well respected, creative, lebanese and continental restaurant. I cut tons of onions my first day and then moved up to work with David. At the time he was only 17 and was essentially running this very complicated traditional (think Julia Child and Jacque Pepin) kitchen. Within days, I was up and running with him.. we got tons of work done in our ten hours. The chef ( Don Pepe) who used to cook for Ari and Jackie Onassis said he was going to quit.. Well we said no problem - went to the owner and the next day Don Pepe was really gone. He later went to prison for dealing coke).
http://www.kcoriginals.com/chefs.asp?chefid=31
We had a blast - we had 7 specials, a soup, quiche, fish entree - etc.. 4 desserts, 4 master sauces, 25 menu items at least for lunch and 30 for dinner.. the kitchen was small and we had the run of it. I was 22 at the time and David was 17, - we were never romantically involved but as close as a married couple almost. We worked 10 hours a day, often 6 days a week non stop.. year after year. I quit do to a violent issue with another cook rather suddenly after 6 years and only saw David occasionally after that. I stayed in restaurants.. cooking at other places, managing and waitressing.. but never matched the fun or knowledge of that place (Nabil's).
After almost 30 years I dropped by David's own restaurant.. it is in a town (weston, missouri) (for luvrving) and had the best time catching up. I'll take my family there soon for brunch. He is gray now and just a bit paunchy around the waist. He said.. I can't believe you are not cooking.. you were one of the best cooks i ever met.. made me feel good. I miss him and the team we were.
He said.. I am no Nabil, I'll never be rich, .. but I never screwed anybody... and Nabil was notorious in that respect.
I might make something with this special sauce (steak diane sauce) we made with brown sauce, green peppercorns, sour cream, burgundy.. it was so good... maybe tonite.
I also found the best clothing shop I've ever seen. It was owned by a Chinese woman.. she and her sister designed all the clothes and had them made in India and China. Her shop is the only place they are sold. I bought a jacket off the sales rack. Many are made with cotton, quilted in stripes with bright vegetable, hand made dyes from India.. omg.. they were gorgeous. Once i am up and driving in a week or 2, I am going to drive up there and take photos. She doesn't have a website and clothing is not mass produced. I am so writing Vogue.. They are uniquely stylish, practical, gorgeous and artistic.

Apple - sounds like it was a very fun day! What is the name of the restaurant in Weston? We've been there for dinner a few times. The Vineyards and Avalon Cafe are two that come to mind.
Back in the early 80's, there was a restaurant in Lowell, MA called the Prince Grotto (think Prince Spaghetti). My dad took all of us there for a nice dinner after he won a big baseball world series pool. He and I had steak diane, which was prepared tableside. His birthday was in November and I invited him and his wife, and I made steak diane. The recipe I recall involved flambe - cognac, I believe. I haven't thought about steak diane in a long time!
The clothing shop sounds fascinating. I loved all the little towns that had unique shops with interesting products, especially clothes that you can't find in Mall Generica.
So glad you are getting your wheels back soon! Nothing like being grounded for months to appreciate something as simple as running to the grocery store at your own whim.
