Oh Chrissy, I am so sorry for the grief you are feeling. I'm glad you got to spend some time with her and your family at the end. I am sending you hugs for the next bit of time as you go throught the process. I felt like the landscape of my life changed after mom passed. Remember we are here for you.

Chrissy, Condolences on your loss. No matter when your mother dies, it's always too soon.

Hi Chrissyb. I'm sorry that I didn't see your post until today. Yes, people do talk about shooting and eating our wild turkeys. Thankfully, it's only talk. They are so lovely in the spring when they do their mating dances.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. I lost mine in 1990 and sometimes it still feels like it was only yesterday.

Hi girls, thank you so much for you prayers, hugs and kind thoughts.......they are much appreciated. We buried my mom today in 113 degree F heat but at last I'm finally home. Hopefully over the next few days I will be able to get back to my normal routine. I know that my thoughts will often wonder to my mom but that is to be expected for a while.

I'm heading off to bed as I'm feeling quite exhausted and am in need of a good nights sleep. Hoping the morning light brings the beginning of happier days.

    Love n hugs all. Chrissy

Chrissy I hope you are getting some much-needed rest, and that you can take comfort in your family and in all the good memories you have of your mother.  And that you can stay cool - 113 is way too hot to move, much less ____.

AJ:  I wanted to let you know that the Kentucky Historical Marker committee has finally approved a historical marker for my ancestress!  It took some doing, but it's happening. The money has been raised & the marker is being made and will be dedicated in April.  I plan/hope to be there!  You have been supportive of this project of mine, and commiserated with me when the committee rejected my first attempt, so I wanted to share the success with you.  Hope all's well in your world and you are feeling better.

Wow LC, what did your ancestress do?

Hi Barbe - Well, she was one of the first white women to settle Kentucky.  They moved from NC to KY by packhorse over the Wilderness Trail during the Rev. War. (400+ miles)  In Kentucky, her husband was the leader of one of the major forts or "stations" as they were called, which made her sort of the women's leader at that station (about 300 people).  Besides the "normal pioneer hardships, then she endured unimaginable loss - one son was killed & scalped by Indians, her husband was killed by Indians a few weeks later, 2 more sons died of "fever" - all within a few months of reaching Ky.  She went back to NC with her remaining family and lived through the RW there - including Cornwallis' army marching smack through her neighborhood wreaking havoc and destruction.  She returned to KY and then helped settle northern KY - still among the "first settlers."  It helps that she was sister to a famous frontiersman who I won't name because I don't want the genealogy googlers to find us here... but he actually did not wear a cap made from an animal with the tail hanging down as he was portrayed on TV shows in the 50s. (get it?)

My research has proven that she and her husband (and her two surviving sons) did much more, and were much closer to her brother than "history already published", so I have been having fun for the past dozen years getting her the recognition she deserves.  Most biographers of her brother just skip over her & her husband, or they get it wrong.  I have been "fixing that" and have enjoyed poking holes in some of the academics' work.  I've written a dozen+ articles and published 3 booklets and a book on my own.   One of the most recent bios of her brother, by a NY Times best selling author a few years ago, cites some of my work, and I'm listed in his acknowledgments page.  Getting the marker has been a long and involved process.  So, I'm happy to be part of it.

    Thanks for asking.

edited to add - Mary's courage and fortitude have been a lifelong inspiration to me.  If she could do that, I can do "this...".  No one had ever bothered to really research her until I came along.

Good job Lost Creek.  It must have been an interesting and rewarding project to see that she got the recognition she so deserved.

    Thanks ladies.

There are so few historical markers for women especially of that era, I sort of feel like she "represents" a lot of them and the hardships they went through.  Now that her facts are sorted and accepted I hope to get on with what I started to do in the first place which was to write a novel about her. All these interesting and previously unknown facts kept getting in the way, and I felt the facts needed to be dealt with first.  Now, if I have any energy left, I can get on with my imagination.

Lost Creek, I too want to read it and was hoping you would post the information.

Chabba - the title sort of gives it away and opens us up to the genealogy googlers. (I'll pm you)

I published it myself, and have sold copies through word of mouth.  No best seller for sure.  I donated copies to relevent libraries and historical societies in KY, NC, VA, and TN, but none on the west coast so I dont think there's really anywhere for you to look.  Sorry.

LC, whew, that was a lot of work, so glad you are getting the marker up. So others can have the information, too. That's some determination to keep going until you achieved success.

We all know the pioneers wouldn't have made it with out the women along to "help" them.

One of my cousins did a trace back to the mayflower thinking we had a relative on board. It turns out he wasn't that nice of a guy and was thrown overboard before they got to land. She was very disappointed. Sounds to me just like some of my relatives.

purple, yes I got a flu shot in Sept. Someone from BCBS called me today to recommend the pneumonia shot. I am not going out to crowded places. Trying to keep myself safe. Most people think I have the flu, since I am coughing and wheezing. LOL they stay away from me.

Have a nice evening or morning ladies, hugs to all

Lost Creek...that was way interesting.Great that you got recognition for your ancestor, and also for your research.

I am in the dog house...I have forgotten D/granddaughter-in-laws b/day. I can NEVER remember this one, somehow I always end up in trouble. I asked DD to fill me in with the correct date when she was here on Saturday. I was told it was Jan 10th...a couple of days off, but it was yesterday !! I will stamp on DDs toe when I see her !  I wouldn't mind I have the card sitting here waiting to take to the postbox, and the present all wrapped up ! Oh well. just something else to strengthen the case that I am losing it !!!!!!!!

I have another b/day on Saturday, GDaughter is 4 years old. We are having a party at a playgym...dreading it...34 about 4year olds running riot, plus many more children of all ages with parents. Seems she has invited her whole nursery class!! Luckily there wil be no clearing up after them all. What happenned to the childrens parties we used to have 7 or 8 'best friends' sandwiches and icecream, then out into the garden to play games at that age.

    Isabella.
