    my rhodadendrons are finally blooming.

Nancy, the rhododendrons are lovely!  We can't grow them this far south, but they're prettier than azaleas, I think.

DH returned from his 3 day kayaking trip so I'll have some company in addition to the dog tonight.  Don't know how many such trips are in his future but I do encourage him to go as long as he's able to.  He absolutely loves it.  He and one friend paddled around 20 miles both Friday and Saturday.

    Hope everybody's weekend was good!

Kathy, that is a new fence that my neighbor put up. I wasn't sure how I would like it, but it sets off the plants nicely. My DD came home last night, so it is nice to have some company. We need to get cracking on getting fixtures for the house. It will be fun.

We had an annual convention here this weekend. I've been attending it for years, except for the last two. So I went this time, but by time Sunday rolled around I was exhausted. lol I am getting older. So today was a rest up day, my DD from her drive and me from doing nothing much.

I'm glad your DH can still get out and paddle around.

Isn't Alyson coming to visit her Grands in Canada?

Nancy those Rhodies are beautiful!  I love the color!!  I'll bet you are happy to have your DD finally home and with the two of your working together you will have all the fixtures for the house picked in no time at all!  Can't wait to see the final result!

Carole I think Aly is going to Canada to visit with her DD and grands.

Kathy, I bet it's nice to have your DH home so you have someone other than the dog to talk to........lol.  It's good to encourage our spouses to do the things they love for as long as possible......it helps to keep them fit, healthy and happy which in the end makes our life a little easier......lol.

The Antiques Fair weekend went very well indeed and we had a very busy time.......thank goodness my SIL came and stayed to give us a helping hand as it really took the three of us all our time to keep things under control!  I am at present at my other DD's in the city as I delivered home my SIL this afternoon and then continued on to the city to help DD with her taxes........now it's time for bed and a very deep sleep i think as I'm absolutely exhausted!  I only have one small job to do on the way home tomorrow so then I can really relax........lol.

    Take care all!

    Love n hugs.    Chrissy

Your picture reminds me of The Shelburne Museum collection.  I know you live in CA but if you ever get to VT and you like this kind of thing you should plan to go there.  It is considered to be the best Americana museum in the world.  The roses are quite lovely too.

Lisa that Orchids is just so beautiful!!  The color is so soft and yet so clear.........amazing!

I am finally home and tomorrow I plan to do nothing!  I have a splitting headache which I think is my body telling me it's definitely had enough and needs to rest.......lol.  A cup of tea could help so that's what I'm about to do, make a nice cup of tea.

    Love n hugs all!    Chrissy

Oh Lisa I so love your photographs!

After my father passed away in January I went through his apartment and selected things I wanted to keep. I had them shipped here and everything arrived on Sunday. It was very emotional to see the things here, and the difficulty continued since that evening began Memorial Day (which is taken VERY seriously here) so I was quite sad and melancholy that night. Gradually the next day I began to feel comforted by the things I have, and now I'm starting to feel like I have a part of my parents and their lives with me.

Leah, it is good you can incorporate their things with your feelings...your feelings will always be with you...so will they.

Leah, now you can HOLD your memories, too! My sister came across something I had made for my mom 45 years ago. I was always trying to get her approval so I had embroidered a birthday gift. My sister has NO idea how she got it or where it came from!!!!

barbe, I can't see your pics.

Leah, life is such a process, isn't it?

I am finally working on my parent's house. I am trying not to feel guilty about changing stuff up. We have so much history with different generations living there. My parents didn't change much at all. So things are dated. Anyway, I'm not rushing through anything.

Well. Barbe. I can't see the pics either.

Leah, I'm glad your father's things arrived safely, but it is indeed hard to go through them.  Like Nancy, I had to go through my parents'  house, but my mother died in 1983 and my father in 2010.  After 3 years my father remarried and they lived in her house in another town, but he held on to his old house, which sat unoccupied.  Finally I had to sell it after Dad's wife got dementia and she, then he, went to nursing homes, so I actually went through the house before before Dad died.  I really didn't keep much other than an old oak "pie safe" and family photographs.

The real chore was going through my aunts' house before it was sold.  These dear ladies had kept every card, letter, wedding or graduation invitation they ever received, and they died at 95 and 98 years old!  Some letters had 3 cents stamps! There were even presents given to them, still in boxes (too good to use, I think).  And a candy box full of love letters  from an old boyfriend of Aunt Kate's.  I saved them but cannot bring myself to read them.   Neither aunt ever married.

We live near a strawberry farm and got a gallon bucketful of strawberries on Tuesday.  Haven't made a thing from them since they're so good we just eat them plain.  I imagine between me, DH, and DGS we'll finish them off tomorrow!

I have to say that the strawberries that are grown in California just are not as sweet as those on the East Coast. I do miss them.

  • chrissyb
    chrissyb Member Posts: 11,438

Lisa that would be because the longer the strawberries take to ripen the sweeter they are as the sugar has more time to develop.........sorry scientific mind pushing it's way in ......lol.

When mum passed last year there was very little to go through as she had moved so much over the years and down sizing each time and ending in a nursing home.  Her last few months were spent mainly in hospital.  I must admit that it did make our lives so much easier as over time she had given to those she wanted to have things and it was only her jewelry that she used to wear that needed to be divided between us girls.  She was buried with the wedding ring that dad gave her on their golden anniversary but her original one I have and wear it on a chain around my neck as it is so worn it is like a little piece of fine gold wire.

Leah I'm so glad that your father's thing have arrived safely and that you can bring up all the wonderful memories when you see them........that is treasure indeed.

Barbe I can't see your pics either :(.

Nancy you will find that as you change the things you want to the house will become more yours and less theirs but the memories that were made in the house will never change no matter what you do.

Kathy, wish I were there to share the strawberries they truly sound delicious!

    Have a good day all!

    Love n hugs.   Chrissy

Lisa, I find your CA strawberries very good.  The Louisiana strawberries used to taste delicious but they don't taste as good now because of the variety of plants.  Also, the weather has a lot to do with the sweetness.  Too much rain--the berry not as sweet.  All this said, I used to pick the berries in my father's field.  Now I buy them in plastic clam shells.  The berries are the best when you pick one, pull the stem off, and pop it into your mouth!

DH and I and his sister had to deal with their parents' house.  We filled up two dumpsters with "stuff" from the attic and basement.
