Okay, I am five weeks out of bmx and I need to start some cardio. What do you ladies suggest with the winter weather on the way? I can walk until it snows, but I hear that there is some coming tomorrow. I am in West Bend, so there are no nearby malls to walk. Gym membership is out of the question with current finances. Any ideas?

J-Bug...maybe you could use a gym at a local school to walk around or maybe even in their hallways after hours?  I know security is always an issue but if you spoke with someone in charge maybe they could ok it.

    anniebell: That's a great idea!

I saw something on tv once where they were trying to do an entire workout by walking in place. I cannot imagine that that would do anything worth counting at all for us. Correct? If only we had bought a ranch style house, I would have more distance...

J-Bug, was it Leslie Sansone?  I've heard of her, she has an in-home walking program.

I got a five-dollar pedometer and wear it every day.  You'd be surprised how many steps you can take during the day and those steps add up to miles.  That really helps my motivation.  During the winter, if all else fails, I walk at the super big box store.  They're always open.  :-)

C'mon over to the Let's Post Our Daily Exercise thread.  Great place for ideas and support.

Lisa, sorry to hear of this new development.  IDK the term you mean but would encourage you to visit the LE threads here.  There are some really knowledgeable women who post there.

    Take care, everyone!

Thanks badger! I will check out that thread. I like the big box store idea too. Kind of funny, our Home Depot is wonderful and everyone bends over backwards to help so I go there instead of the Menards across the street where you couldn't pay someone to talk to you. Sounds like the Menards might be the better store for a good walk. : )

Badger, I think I lost my pedometer in the wash. Darn, darn darn. Stil I walk.  Just wish I could see the numbers for improvement.

Leslie Sansone is supposed to be great.  Walking in place, but not so boring!  Also, any large store, like Wal-Mart, Fleet Farm, K-Mart, Boston Store, Kohl's, Home Depot or even a big grocery store, has aisles that can give you warm space to put in the steps. It's great that you are so determined to get your walking in! Best of luck!

hey Kimberly, I track miles walked in my sig. line.  It's very motivating to see the numbers increasing.  I started a walking program in March 2010, when I started chemo, and have gone 1,855 miles since then.  Heck, I've walked 7.75 miles since I posted here a couple of days ago.  Best $5 investment ever, that pedometer!

Bluewillowskys & anyone who has had surgery and/or radiation: good to get checked right away for lymphedema if you have ANY suspicions. I have been getting therapy since mid-September, wrapping my arm every night and wearing compression garments during the day.

Exercise would probably help too but finding time to go somewhere is difficult, especially during the holidays! I'm thinking about dusting off the old stationary bike in the basement or maybe just walking up and down the stairs several times...

I wouldnt say my lymphadema is severe....just this heavy swollen feeling in my right breats/underarm/upper arm....what is more bothersome is the nerve pain and the burning/pulling sensation and the decrease in range of motion in the right breast and underarm. They said it wasnt cording. The dr. said another word...and i didnt get her to write it down...darn it. I am hoping when i see the physical therapist she will have it written down in my dr. orders.

Hello everyone ! Im so sorry I have not been visiting here much the past few months. I had a lot personally going on to be dealt with.... mainly my divorce. It was finally completed end of December. What a huge relief ! Since then I have been trying to deal with the aftermath and get myself back on track. Another bit of good news is that after 30 months of waiting and appeals, my disability benefits were finally approved. So financially I will finally be able to pull my boot straps up and maybe even get ahead of things in the next few months. I am hoping before next winter to be in a much smaller more managable home and have my 2 kids on their feet in their own apartment. The next obstacle is getting them to get their driver licenses so they can get themselves to/from work instead of me chauffering them.

Since I now dont have to worry about my income so much, my plan is to use my free time to volunteer with a few local charities. Probably the main one will be Walk with GRACE, since they helped me so  much this past year . I also would like to get involved with Susan G Komen in some form.

I sincerely hope everyone  is having a good start to their new year and is tolerating any treatments and surgeries well.

    Prayers and Best wishes !

Welcome lisak7290 and Moonflwr912: It's gorgeous today! I had to sit in the sun while I was waiting on my son to get done with soccer this afternoon. The last few warm-ups I got too energized and was walking 3-4 miles at a time whenever it was warm-ish out. I started rads in January and have had two colds since. So I decided that the exercise needs to stay indoors for now no matter how much the sun entices me.

I was wondering what happened. I was just getting ready to turn on some news and find out, but I didn't want to with all the depressing stuff and political fights they air every night.
