iluv2knit - by venting you are expressing what we have all felt or currently feel at one time or another - hot flashes truely suck.  ((((hugs))))  Side note - my daughter has gotten very wise to my flashes and eyeballs my chin for beads of sweat before she will hug me now!

Hi ladies-  I am one year out and am almost 46. I have terrible flashes during the day and night both. My ob/gyn prescribed Zoloft and said it helped about 1/3 of the women taking it for flashes. Well, I have read that it can cause weight gain- just what i don't need! So I decided not to take it. Mine start in the center of my chest. I sometimes feel a bit dizzy when one comes on. We went to Disney in June and I noticed while walking around out in the heat I never had a flash, but as soon as we went into air conditioning- I flashed-BAD! How long is this supposed to last??!!

TifJ - Mine have been going on over a year.  I don't know how long it lasts - probably an individual thing I suspect!

It's cooled off here (Southern Utah) and I notice I have less flashes than when it's hot.  Does anyone else have them start in your hands?

hands?? no...mine starts deep inside my body

not in heat but in the air-condition?? Mine are always better when I am in a cold environment

what foods to stay away from?....well just about everything that is good!! LOL.....processed foods are a great big NO....artificial sweetners except I do use truvia....high sodium/sugar foods....restaurant foods....it is best to prepare your own foods so that you know what is in the food you are eating but I know that can be time consuming for some who do not have time to prepare meals from scratch.

wow I am having another good day so far......the diet thing is really helping. I am staying away from all packaged foods and packaged processed luncheon meats this week.  I have always heard that if it did not come from the ground then we should not eat it.

I have to figure out what happened.  I have been pretty much hot flash free for several months and now the chills and REAL flashes are back.  I have always gotten the "feeling" right before a flash but had not actually gotten hot or broken out in a sweat since starting the blach cohosh.  The factor that is different is we went out of town and I did not eat well like I normally do.  Linda54, I will get back to my usual eating program and see if they go away.  But argh... they are miserable

Shannon  I'm wondering whether the black cohosh just ran it's course and stopped stopping the HF's?  Like when one needs to up the dose of a medication in order to maintain the same result.  Please let us know if getting back on your regular diet makes a difference.

I do eat meat....limited red meat...mostly chicken. I just purchased an electric meat grinder. I no longer trust the ground meats from the grocery stores.

I do eat eggs but mostly boiled cut up into a salad.  I drink skim milk

Can you help me with a question, please?  Why would I begin having hot flashes after 2 years on Femara?

I went into surgical menopause in 1999, took HRT a few years and then  tapered it off. I had a few hot flashes then but had not had a hot flash in years when I was diagnosed with BC in 2009. After treatment, I began taking Femara and have taken it for 2 years now. About 3 wks. ago, I began having very noticable hot flashes, especially at night....having one as I type. Help!

October - If I had to guess I would say that perhaps you were still producing estrogen from somewhere and now it dropped lower.

Omaz, Thanks for replying.  My onc. checked my estrogen level in April and it was less than 5 pg/mL., very low.

Omaz - I agree ----------October try and get your doc to back it up by labs

Okay all---------had the period of dry flashes for about 2 + weeks then went back to wet flashes. The dry hotflashes were horrible ----like heat stroke. Has anyone read heard that there was an existance of the two????????????????

Now Little bean is grown as you all have known. How long has it been growing or did it just take a spurt. The importance of this is, the rapid nature of my Bc growth-------it was very agressive--grade 2 to grade 3 in less than a month------no sampling error.

New symptom. My moustache that of course has been an embarrassment, but it's stopped growing----2 weeks, I told the ONC this ------My correlation is that would only occur if I was producing estrogen and somehow the Aromasin wasn't blocking it. I have asked for labs which he was ready to order at visit, but I said let's wait and see another week. But now it's by phone message----ladidadada. I had to trim the hairs three ?x's per week. Now not growing? Flashing minimal. Meningiomas can produce estrogen so I'm not happy until I get some labs done. The odd thing as soon as I get the labs done, I'm going to start taking the drug that potentiated the Aromasin and gave me all kinds of s.e.'s fibromyalgia being the worst, until I get labs back. OH what we do in the presence of trouble. Cluck!

    (((((hugs SAS))))))

October - That was my one and only estrogen measurement level too. Did anything else change for you 3 weeks ago - meds, your home environment, new foods, supplements?

Omaz Thanks-Who would think that your moustache not growing was a symptom LOL. And it still isn't growing, considering I had to clip it 2-3 times a week -------- too cheap to pay for waxing. LOL---------Flashing has stopped---------Something has changed-----------Now on the other hand Insomnia has not.------------Up all night, but took a pain pill last evening so...............

Been taking Gabapentin for about 6 weeks now...Just like when I was going thru mentalpause, the hot flashes have abated to one or two a night...and I had been waking up completely drenched in sweat on and off all night...Nice that it's getting cooler here in New England...that helps as well...

Now, if I could only get the insomnia (from the AI) that happens once or twice a week to abate...

My diet test this week has been going well with lot less severe flashing.....except, I worked late last night and I had a bowl of packaged cereal for my late supper.  I had several severe flashs last night.  So could my theory be correct about the diet and flashing????  Undecided    Eating good today so far and feeling good.

Omaz,  I had a recurring infection/inflamation in my right (contralateral) breast in the area where I previously had a biopsy and began taking amoxicillin about the same time.  The symptoms improved pretty quickly but are beginning again...can't seem to kick it. With all these issues flaring up, I'm a bit worried.  I have an appt. with a bone endocrinologist Oct 14 because of severe bone loss last year (on Femara) and I'm hoping she can add clarity to all these disparate puzzle pieces.

Linda, thanks for the info on diet.  I think you are on to something in your case at least.  I haven't been having hot flashes much.  I was right after surgery, but will be starting Tamoxifin soon, so I am getting the info ready for later.  Appreciate the info.

SAS....your are a Sherlock Holmes.  I hope your labs come out good.  Thinking about you.

SAS Sorry you are having a rough spell.  I hope you get your labs soon.

So far this week I am back on my "healthy eating and exercising" lifestyle and flashes are better.  Not as minimal as they were but definetly improved.  Very intersting.

just maybe with all of us banning together and trying different things and sharing our success then maybe we can come up with a cure or at least a solution to ease these dreadful hot flashes....I had another easy day...praying that my night will also be good.

had a good night....no wet flashes

LOL YES ShanonR.....lots of people tell me I look like the Brady mom...even checkers in Wal-Mart....all I say is that I hope I look as good as she does when I get her age.....did you see her  abs on Dancing with the Stars?....she looks great

Get those fritoes out of your system and keep them out!!!!

My son came by yesterday and brought his lunch.....fried catfish fingerlings....they looked so good. I got about a half-dollar size piece and then asked if I could have a little more then thought "that might just make for a bad flashing day" then I said no more. I could have eaten lots more but so not worth a bad day......I was so proud of myself....willpower to the rescue!!!!

I counted and had 5 hot flashes last night.  The 5th came at 6am so I just decided to get up.  No wonder I am exhausted during the day. I already take lunesta and they still wake me up. I live for Saturday when I can sleep in and make up for some of that lost sleep time during the week

Sherryc - I take a combination of 3mg melatonin plus 4mg chlortrimeton and helps somewhat with sleep.  Best for me it to be sure to exercise during the day and/or evening.

The combo of melatonin and chlotrimeton gave me the best sleeps, even better than Ativan or Valium.  Unfortunately, the chlortrimeton dries me out too much ( thanks to Arimidex and Tamoxifen), and the melatonin by itself gives me a fitful sleep :(

I have never counted the flashes, that would be interesting but could also get my anxiety going which would get more hot flashes going and so on and so forth.  One thing I have narrowed down by now and I know for sure is if I do not exercise they are BAD.  Still working on the other factors.

Linda, where in MS ?  That cracks me up that the Walmart checkers notice.
