So nice to hear from you, Janis, and so glad all is well with you and with hubby. I'm so jealous about his eyelid surgery. I've been pestering my eye guy for several years, and he keeps insisting that my droop isn't droopy enough for insurance to consider it anything but cosmetic. For crying out loud! If my intent were cosmetic, I'd have taken care of it years ago.

Brookside, I hear ya. I went for a evaluation for a breast augmentation in April and was told that 3 cup sizes in not enough to do anything. Some docs are so frustrating. I finally decided that I didn't want more surgery and have learn how to dress professionally and hide it. I have a balancer for when those times I need it. Can't do that with eye lids though.

Brutersmom, if they can make an appropriately-sized balancer, why the heck can't they make implants for all needs? There must be plenty of demand.

Brookside - I had a friend who had the surgery done and convinced her insurance company it wasn't for cosmetic reasons. Sap. She did have the droopy eyelids of course but I never thought she could pull off making it medically necessary as in Impairing her vision. Didn't look that bad to me but what do I know. Goes to show you the power our doctors wield with insurance companies. Coding is everything.

My previous dog story concerns about the dog in a crate in the garage has gotten a lot better. The owners air conditioned their garage and I've noticed the lady owner is running with the dog. My relentless calls to Animal Services finally paid off. I had made many futile attempts to get the owners to let the dog play in our backyard and a neighbor offered to walk him. They didn't budge. Idk why. However, when one of AS workers visited their home a few days ago she was satisfied the dog was okay. The male owner was defensive but assured AS they love the dog and bring him in the minute they get home. He is healthy and has all his shots. Still don't like keeping him in the garage and I do worry what will happen to him if the power goes off suddenly. Maybe at least leave a window open. Make no mistake I will break the glass if I have to.

Btw friend had lumpectomy Wednesday. Came through the surgery just fine. Dr doesn't think there is lymph node involvement but of course Path report will confirm that. It should be back in a week. She is such an inspiration. She has been to hell and back with medical issues and now this. Please pray for her.

    Thanks.

Have a nice weekend everyone! Temps in the 99s! Ugh. Could be worse though X neighbors live in Arizona - temps@115!

    Hi all,
Just finished my summer semester --- an entire semester lab science course in 5 weeks.  It was grueling.  Am grading finals and putting in grades from home.  I get my beach pass tomorrow and I will be spending some leisurely mornings before tearing this house apart.

Diane, I will remember your friend in prayers.  Right after my surgery almost 5 years ago, my colleague at work was dx'd with TN IDC.  She had BMX and now she has been "graduated" from the care of the oncologist.  She is doing great.  I hope that for your friend too.

Janis, my friend, so good to see you here.  You have been busy....I hope DH is on the mend and feeling better.

Josie, I hope things are going well with your daughter.

OK Cindy, our resident cheerleader...you kind of slipped one in there....Birthday Girl!!  I truly hope this year will bring you peace and serendipitous joy.  You surely deserve it.

    And Happy Week end!

Delayed breast cellulitis following breast conserving operation.

    Zippel D,
    Siegelmann-Danieli N,
    Ayalon S,
    Kaufman B,
    Pfeffer R,
    Zvi Papa M.
Department of Surgical Oncology, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Israel.

A complication of breast conservation, which has been increasingly reported in the literature, is 'delayed cellulitis' in the treated breast. This is to be distinguished from wound infection in the breast following lumpectomy.

This study reports 16 cases diagnosed with delayed cellulitis following breast conserving surgery, unresponsive to antibiotic therapy. Diagnostic criteria included: pain, erythema and edema in the operated breast. Symptoms appeared up to 10 months after surgery and time to resolution was seven and a half months. No patients had positive cytology and bacteriology tests were negative. Thirteen patients were observed, and three patients were treated with antibiotics with no apparent immediate effect.

The appearance of breast cellulitis after surgery poses a problematic diagnostic and management dilemma. It is important to distinguish between this entity and infection, or inflammatory carcinoma. The picture may be attributed to impairment or occlusion of the lymphatic circulation in the breast. This seems to be a newly defined complication with an incidence of 3-5%.

The dilemma of delayed cellulitis after breast conservation therapy.

    Staren ED,
    Klepac S,
    Smith AP,
    Hartsell WF,
    Segretti J,
    Witt TR,
    Griem KL,
    Bines SD.
Department of General Surgery, Rush-Presbyterian-St Luke's Medical Center, Chicago, III, USA.

    OBJECTIVE:

To determine the clinicopathologic characteristics of patients with breast cancers in whom delayed breast cellulitis developed after conservation therapy (lumpectomy, axillary dissection, and radiation).

    BACKGROUND:

Breast cellulitis developing after conservation therapy represents a difficult diagnostic and management dilemma because determination of its origin may be necessary before further treatment decisions can be made.

    METHODS:

In this retrospective evaluation of 184 sequential patients with breast cancers who underwent conservation therapy, 10 study patients (5%) in whom breast cellulitis developed 3 or more months after surgery were compared with the 174 patients in whom cellulitis did not develop.

    RESULTS:

There was no significant difference in clinicopathologic characteristics of the study patients compared with control patients. The cellulitis resolved in 5 patients (50%) and persisted from 4 months to more than 1 year in 5 patients (50%). The cellulitis recurred in 1 patient who responded to repeated therapy. The 5 patients with persistent cellulitis underwent biopsies, and recurrent cancer was found in 1 patient. Recurrent cancer did not develop in the patients whose cellulitis resolved within 4 months with a minimum follow-up of 24 months.

    CONCLUSIONS:

Delayed-onset cellulitis occurs in a small percentage of patients with breast cancers treated by conservation therapy. The cellulitis may take several weeks to clear, and/or it may recur or persist. If the condition persists after 4 months of therapy, a biopsy should be performed to rule out recurrent cancer.

Breast cellulitis after conservative surgery and radiotherapy.

    Rescigno J,
    McCormick B,
    Brown AE,
    Myskowski PL.
Department of Radiation Oncology, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY.

    PURPOSE:

Cellulitis is a previously unreported complication of conservative surgery and radiation therapy for early stage breast cancer. Patients who presented with breast cellulitis after conservative therapy are described.

    METHODS AND MATERIALS:

Eleven patients that developed cellulitis of the breast over a 38-month period of observation are the subject of this report. Clinical characteristics of patients with cellulitis and their treatment and outcome are reported. Potential patient and treatment-related correlates for the development of cellulitis are analyzed.

    RESULTS:

The risk of cellulitis persists years after initial breast cancer therapy. The clinical course of our patients was variable: some patients required aggressive, long-duration antibiotic therapy, while others had rapid resolution with antibiotics. Three patients suffered from multiple episodes of cellulitis.

    CONCLUSION:

Patients with breast cancer treated with conservative surgery and radiotherapy are at risk for breast cellulitis. Systematic characterization of cases of cellulitis may provide insight into diagnosis, prevention, and more effective therapy for this uncommon complication.

Diane, great pic, thanks for sharing.I can finally put a face to your name.

Cindy hope your birthday was good .Sounds like your keeping busy as always.

Joan, congrats on your much needed and well deserved time off.Enjoy.

Our summer is flying by too. My nephew was married over the weekend and my sister was in town from Connecticut. It was wonderful seeing her again and my niece is getting married in September so maybe she will be in for that wedding also.

Last week was our staycation. My hubby and I were off work from Wednsday till Sunday. That was technically only 2 missed workdays for me since I'm already off on Wednesday. Wednesday we ate breakfast out and then it was my 13 yr old day to do what she wanted so we went to a park by the river and swam with my 2 daughter's and her dogs and my 13 yr old DD boyfriend. It was fun but a little hot.Thursday was my son Andy's day was Thursday. All he wanted to do was watch Star wars, the newest movie but we did have a few errands to run first and then got lunch at his favorite McDonald's and then of course he wanted us to catch up by watching the first movie the original Star Wars before watching the new one. So we did get a break between the two but the entire afternoon consisted of this movie marathon. Friday was my DH and I' s day. We went to lunch at Applebee s and that was about it. Of course my 13 yr old got in on that one too. Andy didn't want to do the breakfast and river Wednesday because he has been pulling all nighters lately and sleeping during the day. I hope to get him on a good schedule soon. My DD Sarah is doing well and so is the baby. She is 25weeks along this week. It is going fast. The neighbor across the street is moving and her house will be for rent soon. If she can get her friend to rent with her(she's a single mom also and They are great friends. The rent will be $800 a month but it would only be half that if her friend moves in with her.

Thanks guys and yes April it is God's country! I have been to the Notre Dame campus many times. It still wows me! I am secretary of our local ND Club and have been for years. We do community service projects - DH is the go to guy for them. He is an engineer and a great handyman. Most of the guys in our club are lawyers and very few of them, according to them, know what to do with a tool! We also give scholarships to ND students, sponsor 2 students from The University every summer to work at the Sisters of Charity house, annual UND night - dinner and guest speaker from the University, Community Mass, game watches and sponsor chorale groups from Notre Dame when they are in town. It's a great group of guys and ladies. Didn't mean to run on and on but some people think all we do is have game watches. I love Rudy too. We have met the real Rudy. My DS tells me I cry at the same scenes in the movie - it's true. When he is sitting in his dorm room crying and when the coach puts him in the game.

Josie - That's so cool doing those family outings. Sister time is always good. Mine lives in Georgia. Don't get to see her much except holidays or family events

Wow can't believe your DD is that far along already. I hope she can rent that house. How convenient would that be.

I'm going to keep the twins next year when GFF starts Nursing school. She has an associates in pre-Med. Not all day or every day but I don't want them in a daycare and neither do DS or GFF. The girls will be in school. By then they will be able to tell me what's wrong. I will need my track shoes on too. Hard enough chasing one but two? Yikes!

Josie down time is good for the soul. Glad things are going well

So I'm in that Day 1 panic mode. Had abdomen/pelvic ultrasound this morn Dr has already call me in for tomorrow. They only call u in if they find something. So I'm guessing that I'm graduating to a new level. Went out & mowed lawn for an hour. Crying while driving is not such a good thing.

Josie, it's just my yearly check up time. The abdominal scan, he does every 3 yrs as part of yearly check. Also had chest x-ray today, but nurse said it was to discuss ultrasound. Mamo, mamo ultrasound & bone density on July 13th. Bloodwork already done, just high cholesterol. Ditsy nurse asked if I wanted appointment tomorrow or wait til Monday! Long weekend here, hell no way I'm waiting all weekend for results. It's torture enough waiting 1 day.

Thanks for the party Cindy, afraid I started with out u'all. Couple of good stiff vodkas & it's a different world. ( rarely drink).

Lining of Uterus has thickened, gone from 6mm to 10mm. Could be from Tamoxifen or uterine cancer. Won't know til I have biopsy done, waiting for a date. Thanks for the support.
