Hello Ottawa Ladies, it has been quiet here on the Ottawa board. I guess everyone is finding other things to keep them busy and moving on.
I have a question for you ladies. I recently met a lady who is having a double mastectomy with tissue expander's in the next few weeks. She is quite scared as you can imagine. But here's the thing. Her dr. has told her that is it is super painful and that she will be on big time pain meds for a long time. From my memory I don't remember any of the ladies mentioning having that much pain. I think her doc is scaring the crap out of her. Any input here?

Michelle,
I didnt experience that much pain. I had the paravertebral block. I took a couple of dilaudid in recovery (I recall just being uncomfortable from the stretcher) and then maybe a couple at home. Then on to tylenol. I had a UMX.
The doctor should be saying that yes, there is pain, but it can be controlled with meds. Like all this isnt stressful enough.
Hope doc is wrong and she is comfortable.

Hello again Ottawa Ladies,
Did anyone use the Maplesoft Centre? If so, what is it like? Would you recommend using it?

After my masectomy, I had pain meds but didn't take any,
Now the tissue expander was a bit painful, but just a tight feeling.
Havent been on this thing, because life is good, and I just forget I'm a bc patient.
Hope all you ladies feel like me!!!0 -
Forever, I have not been to the Maplesoft Centre yet. I hear wonderful things about it though...you should check it out for sure.

Thanks, Michele. Looking forward to checking it out on Wednesday.

Hi Ottawa Ladies been out of the loop for a bit. Off for my annual mammogram tomorrow, post mastectomy and it made me think of this board and all the support/ great advice.
Michelle, my pain also manageable and like you I got off the heavy stuff asap. For the lady with the doctor making her so fearful - I'd say time to consider another doctor!! Has to be the last thing she needs.
I'm confident tomorrow will be fine but my husband overseas so just wanted to share with people who get it.

sumac, hope everything went well.
Forever, I have been meaning to check out the Maplesoft Centre. Starting rads next week and can commit to anything scheduled right now. Kind of scatter brained.

Thanks Mary. Thinking of you next week. Sue

Thursday morning I have an excisional biopsy with Dr. Watters. I'm in full stress out mode at the moment.
My last MRI showed changes to the weird area in my left breast (previous biopsy found paplioma and FEA). At least I've managed to make arrangements for my girls to have a weekend away at their grandparents and I will be able to stay home and relax.
babysammy (or any others), how did you find Dr. Watters and recovery from the excision?

Hope everything went ok yesterday. take time over the weekend to relax sumac

Update on my visit to Maplesoft: awesomeness. So many things that offered. Some things like meditation and yoga are just drop in so you don'tever have to feel like you've registered but then never showed. I actually did register for a four week course on self-hypnosis on Thursdays in the morning but something has come up every Thursday for me so that didn't work out. Something else I registered for that is working out is the Wonders and Worries course for my 7 year old. It's weekly for the next 6weeks. He's had 2 sessions so far and it's really good. He's already learned so much.

Hi ladies - just popping in and wanted to relate that I've had a great experience with the physio program at Haley Rehab at the Civic. It has been a huge help in dealing with some issues with the implant, if anyone is experiencing any pain, mobility issues, lymph issues, etc. they are fantastic.
I'm going to start attending yoga classes as well, sounds like Maplesoft has some good options - so I'll check them out.

Hi Ladies!
I took a break of cancer and now I'm back! I should say I took a break thinking about cancer...
I have been on Tamoxifen since May and it's been quite the ordeal... It totally messed up with my Thyroid (I was already Hypo) and I've had to change my Thyroid meds 3X since May and again soon I'm sure as I am not feeling that great. It's hard to know what's Thyroid, hormones or Side effects of the Tamoxifen. So I'm hoping some of you can share if you had or are having these kinds of issues... The sweating is much better since I'm on Effexor so that's not an issue, these are the things that concern me: Muscle weakness (mostly my legs), bruising, Periods are very irregular (sometimes 2X a month then none for 2 month...)
My next appointment with the oncologist is not until November and my Family Dr is doing her best but reffers me back to my Onc for the side effects of Tamoxifen...
Also have been looking for supplement that won't interfere with hormones... So far fish oil seems to be the only thing the pharmacist can be sure of... What have you found out?
I've been trying to catch up with all the post since I was last here but there is tons!
Michele that's awesome about your results!

Foreverchanged. thanks for the info for the Maplesoft centre. I think I will look into it more when I finish rads. 7 more to go. Glad that you found it helpful.
Carolyne, no help for you about the tamox. I think I will be starting that soon, so interested in others input. What kind of supplements are you looking to take? I see a naturopath, but wont be seeing her until the new year, all ready ran the limit the insurance will cover.
Have a good weekend everyone.

Hi has anyone come across dr d peters or kristy body plastic surgeon here in Ottawa?
0 -
I am waiting for a consultation with Dr. Boyd, there's a 6 months waiting list and they are not currently scheduling appointments that far ahead.

Hi, I had my implant taken out. Just to advise you all, that I had. Terrible experience with my PS. I has my implant taken out yesterday and met Dr Kirsty Boyd. She is so passionate and caring, she is my new PS.
I'm not sure I'm doing this again though, I feel traumatized by this whole journey.
I used to enjoy my days off and going to the gym, 2012 I've spent more time in the clinic waiting to see my ps than actually having me enjoy my days off. Summer was the worst
I missed out on gardening and swimming due to incisions not healing.
I am great full for being cancer free, but would really have liked to close the chapter officially with recon.
*sigh*0 -
redninrah,
sorry to hear this. It does sound traumatic. Glad you found a ps that you like though. Make your decision, get through this so you can enjoy summer 2013. I havent yet gone down the recon road, it does sound hard. Sounds like with these wait lists I should make up my mind though.

Got a call from the office of the Dr. Boyd this week, letting me know that I should have an appointment for my first consultation in the spring and then surgery could be three to four months after the consultation. whoohoo! that's much better than what the Ottawa Citizen was stating in their series Battlescars.
Rednirah, sorry to hear that you had such a difficult year, especially having gone through BC. Hopefully you have a better year ahead.

Wow, I am suprised that its taking that long to see Dr Boyd. I see her on Friday, and she is now going to be m ps. But having said that, I'm not sure what I want done, I have had 4 failed diep , two failed implants, so what else????
Right now I'm concentrating on no recon, it's not worth the hassle and I wasted my 2012.
Apt after apt ridiculous !!!0 -
Has anyone of u ladies done a prophlactic masectomy?
0 -
Red I am sorry it had to be so traumatic for u! I had my mastectomy a year ago and was originally planning for mastectomy on the other side (with reconstruction) last spring but I postponed as I had a diffult time with the side effects of Tamox and am now just starting to feel like I could take on the next step... Now I am a little nervous after reading your story Who was surgeon originnally?
I was planning on seeing Dr Lorimer, I am planning on calling to ask about waiting time...
0 -
It was traumatic, I felt like I was just someone they were just billing OHIP.
I mean it doesnt take a genius to figure out you got someone whose had radiation, with damage to skin. They did DIEP, failed 4 times! Then they do the implant, which really to some one who has radiation should wait a longer time than a yr. When my implant opened up the first time, it should have been game over! and my body shud have healed.
My PS was DR Guay, I have now switched to Dr Kirsty Boyd, She is truly amazing, I had my stitches taken out today and i am no longer going for recon...........
Possible masectomy Feb 2013 with my oringal surgeopn Dr Lorimer.
Each story is different, but I myself am in the medical field, and I know that I should have been told to take a break!

Redninrah....hi, just catching up on things again. Sounds like quite the trip you have had. I feel bad for you. On the other hand, I had Dr Guay too. So far it has all been awesome for me. Luckily no infections, no complications. Clinics are busy, and it is in and out....which makes the wait longer than the visit. He can be very quick, to the point. I just ask him to slow down for a sec...and then he is great.
I will be seeing him this month again for some fine tuning.
I had a friend who had prophylactic bmx without any recon. She wears just a slightly padded sports bra, and says she has no desire to go through any more surgeries. She is very happy with her choice, and she looks great.
Good luck. No one should have to endure all that!0 -
Dr Guay is definatey one of the best recon surgeons in Ottawa, but I think I just got frustrated and just pissed off that y wouldn't someone just say hey, u need that thing taken out, I have healed beautifully. I have my surgery booked for masectomy with the same surgeon who did. My other one. No more recon for me, not for a while.im happier this way.

I keep thinking back to your massage table experience! I still have not gone for any of my appts!
Glad to hear things are better!>0 -
Omg, that experience was horrible.
I get routine massages after my masectomy, and I remember her telling me to lie on m stomach, she was doing back. Se wasn't really pushing me against the massage bed.
The look on her face when she said, errrrr ur leaking. I was so embarrassed and frightened!!!
Anyways, I won't be paranoid anymore- lol,
By the way,, when they removed my implant my chest is concave, from where the implant pushed on my chest muscles, not a very attractive site at all. *sigh* I was told that they could fill that with fat injections, anyways, ill wait until th masectomy and see how I feel.
I feel good about where I am right now.0 -
Hi redninrah,
question about fat injections, who is "they" cosmetic or plastics? Ontario put them in so does Ontario pay for injections?0
