Oh, good piece of advice about the Flexi settings, Natsfan! Thanks for that. Lying there all trussed up and punching buttons can be a challenge--easy to screw up the settings and never realize it. I'll stow that tidbit in my (unrealiable) mind and hope to bring it forth if (when) I need it!

I've been upping the exrercise a bit . Spending my lunch breaks on a nearby college campus doing 45 mins fast powerwalking. Also leave my building a few times a day for ' short bursts'.

NatsFan, I'm late to the chorus because I've been taking care of my grandkids for a few days and have had almost no Internet time--but here's my WOW! I'm so proud of you! What a great, great accomplishment!
I've been preoccupied, but managed to stay active. Have managed to take kids out for walks and keep my gym schedule, so lots of good movement--6.5 miles today, almost 5 yesterday. Not to mention chasing after the 2 year old!
Purple, that's great, great commitment to activity. Good work!

Well, I have a new activity. It's called "climbing hills on my single speed bike." There's a church next to me so I do laps with some up and downs.
I'm going to develope really good lung and leg power doing that. Single speeds can be tough on hills, depending on the gearing.

Mary - CONGRATULATIONS!
So proud of you! xoxo0 -
wow, single speed bike on hills? awesome and definitely a serious workout.
I need my fancy multi speed Cannondale to do hills!
congrats to you

Single speed biking is a lot more work, you notice little inclines a whole lot more. Hills certainly will get the ole heart rate up. Great idea nibbana.

Single speed bikes on hills? oy.. that sounds like incredible hulk making legs.
Would my hips which can't take stair climbing be able to bike ride up the hills? Are the same muscles used biking hills the same as walking on flat ground?
Since I can't stair climb my lungs capacity is nil. I was thinking the bike might be good if my hips like it. Ill ask my chiro but if you gals know, then educate me.
Going out for the 45 min walk soon.

I discovered the newer 20 speed bikes have really easy shifting....means that folks like me can actually tell when they are in the dif gears and it makes all the dif
single speed is for folks in much better shape than me although, I do think the vintage bikes are lovely to look at and ride on the flats for me!

Congratulations Mary! YOu rock. I also completed 5k run today as a part of fund raising. Felt so good to run for good cause.

The only reason I have a single speed bike is because I can't afford a nice road bike, rebuilding the vintage was costly enough. I couldn't climb at all on my mountain bike, and it lumbered on the pavement. So nice to have a nice sleek road bike. Hill climbing really works the quads and hamstring groups.

nibban-- there is a cycling museum near me, it has vintage bikes from way back and really cool to visit.
Do not take my comments as anything other than complete admiration for your ability to use the single speed on hills! Yeah, I have riden in the past on bike tours with folks on mountain bikes....it was not a pretty picture for them!
Actually, this weekend is the ride in NYC formerly known as the "5 borough bike tour." I did it twice, it starts in lower Manhattan and goes through all the boroughs and ends in Staten Island. It goes over two of the bridges and up the FDR drive. About 38 miles I think. It is a cool ride and if you ever make it to NYC, I recommend it!

Just tramped around the city for 45 min, got 4600 steps. I am so disappointed as I thought for sure I covered more ground. I usually don't sweat but I dripped in the heat. That is not like me. Wore a sun shirt to be safe.
Nordy if you are reading can you see my question above on biking? What do you think?
What physical activities are you doing lately?

Nibbana, you are so inspiring with your git-r-done attitude! I haven't hopped on my bike for a long time, not since getting LE, although last year I had the handlebars raised to help ward off evil LE spirits. But I never worked it into my days. I'll have to try harder!
Today was a gym day for me, with my trainer, and he always makes sure I go home all tuckered out. And I am indeed pooped! Maybe because I spent the week taking care of little ones, not because I worked out today. Got 7800 steps in today, and like Hugz, I had the impression it was more, and I did some real speedy walking on a treadmill so it sure felt like work.
Proud, that NYC ride sounds very interesting!

Mary, congrats on your run! That is a huge accomplishment. You should be super proud of yourself.
Hugs, walking up stairs uses a lot of the same muscle groups as a cycling. The difference is that there's no impact cycling and your body weight is supported by the bike. Is there anyway you can try out a stationary bike to see how your hips feel? Cycling is a great exercise to ease back into other things. Tai chi would be good too.0 -
Carol or any cycling person, if you ever come to NYC to do the 5 boro tour, I know the most important place. The bar at the end when you have just come over the Veranzano Bridge, down onto Staten Island, the only place to crash or rather the best, is the Irish pub.....wow, do remember those times! I am not sure I would make it now!
hmmm, a cold beer at the end? awesome

I'm still jogging around the house, keeping count of my "laps" by tossing corks into a bowl. It's getting very hot here, so indoor jogging has yet another advantage--the soles of my shoes don't melt on the sidewalk.
A friend just sent me a "Maxine" joke (y'know, the old lady with an attitude?) It says, "Instead of the john, I call my bathroom the jim. That way it sounds better when I say I go to the jim first thing every morning."
Hmmm, yes--that'd be me...

Proud, the Five Boroughs ride sounds fun! I hope if memory serves me right, the boroughs are all flat.
Got back on the bike for a ride through farm country. Great day in the Pacific Northwest for any outdoor activity today!
Need to do chest and back later.

I've been upping my walks lately- 45 mins very fast outdoors with differing ' hills' etc ... . I am noticing my ' good arm' getting sore lately. Achey.
HATE that feeling!
Sure hoping it is all the arm pumping, but I know that before LE, I went thru spurts/months of summertime powerwalking etc .. and noticed plenty of other issues ( shin splints, sore feet etc ....) but never ever noticed my arm aching.Has anyone else experienced anything similiar in the non affected arm ?
I'm not sure whether to back off the exercise or keep it going and hope to become more conditioned.
THX for any input.

Purple, how about a compromise: get more conditioned, but do it in smaller increments. No point pushing it. Are you doing any Lebed? Might help to do the opening before other exercise.
Be well!
Binney0 -
Thanks, Binney. I suppose I could slow things down a bit ... but that still doesnt address why my right arm aches!
I have nor been doing Lebed. I can give that a try.
It's tough because I have been doing the powerwalking on my lunchbreak. Maybe I could do the Lebeds before work but that would be 5 hrs in between.
THX for your response.0 -
Nibbana, nope, NYC has hills although not real big. But when you go over a bridge, there is an up and a down! But it is so cool to be on a bike and on the FDR drive, and look back and see this sea of cyclists as they ride. Ever want to try, give me a yell!! Course it has been many moons since I did the ride. But one nice thing is if you bail out, you can hit the subway. Oh to be younger again!

Purple - Are you keeping your arms at 90 degrees by your side or are they hanging down when you walk? Speed walking was my exercise of choice before LE. It now is the one cardio exercise that makes me swell more than any. I have to constantly remind myself to not let my arms hang down because I forget. If you have access to a standing or incumbent bicycle, use that to get some cardio in and break in the speed walking slowly.
Totally agree about the Lebed opening before you exercise.0 -
or are they hanging down when you walk?
No, I am swinging/pumping them actually- but why does the ' good arm' ache ?
Hmmm....no access to such a bike/ used to have one.
I actually thought a stationary bioke would be bad due to the arms locked on handlebars, rather than moving them. Will try the Lebeds. Please tell me ...what do you theorize it will do in this case ?
thx0 -
Purple - I don't put my hands down when I ride on the stationary bike. I keep my arms near heart level when I ride stationary bike. I do fist pumps too.
Lebed is just going to open things up and give the kick start to get the fluid moving. Cardio helps move lymph fluid...Lebed just facilitates it.0 -
One thing about a stationary bike is that you actually never really have to hold the handlebars!
0 -
OK, gotcha ladies. I actually thought pumping the arms in exercise would be good for the LE! I do fist pumps every 5-10 mins as well elevate/raise the arm up <just> a few times throughout the power walking. OK, just realized how silly I must look on the college campus
Will keep all your thoughts in mind and will start with the lebed. I hope to begin a waterdance class for BC survivoros this week,. Looking forward to that .
THX

LMBO @ Binney going to the 'Jim'. Too funny. I'm going to use that one!

Went on another bike ride. Maximum speed was 19 mph and could've went faster if I had a bigger chainring.
Did do my chest and back workout too. I'm such a good doo-bee lately.

Hi Everyone,
I haven't been here for awhile but I have a question. I joined a health center this month. On Friday I joined an aerobics swim class. The next day my breast was sore and a little swollen. Do any of you wear your sleeve in the water? Thanks for your help.
