Hi Ladies.  It's lovely having a long weekend, although I am working this morning trying to tie up loose ends before starting treatment.

Woody.  Yes I am having FEC-T.  Somehow during my MRI the contrast leaked into my tissue, so I had to do it again the next day.  I suppose that's why they are giving me a portacath.  I am quite feaked out by it actually more than the mastectomy - weird huh?

I am preparing myself.  I have braces and am getting them tightened up and my teeth cleaned before Chemo starts.  I am hoping that I don't having any dramas where my teeth are concerned.  They have cost me over $10k in the last year with treatment and I hope that they stay good.  Did any of you have mouth problems during chemo?  Also, do you have any tips on being prepared supplement wise and food wise for my first influsion?

hi girls. I'm still in bed, really tired. My eyes hurt but I'm still managing to check up on you all :)

Have had a busy weekend painting (my parents, sister & nephew helped- fun) then yesterday ferrying my son & his friend to Armageddon - they had a blast so it was worth it- looked great in their home made costumes :)

Kiwi, as far as diet during chemo- just a normal balanced diet is fine- you might find some things don't appeal anymore. Just eat what you can & make sure you dose up on the anti nausea meds- don't miss a dose. I hope the port placement goes well.

I don't know any fertility expert onc's kiwikid. Hope you find one ok.

Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend. A quiet day is in store for me as I have work tomorrow.

ps Woody the bisphosphonate is a drug that assists the bones so they don't breakdown as fast. As I have couple of spots on my spine that have worsened they hope that the Aredia (pamidronate) will keep them from getting worse.

Sounds like a fun time with your daughter & friends :)

A root canal, however doesn't sound fun (for you or your pocket) hope whatever you decide to do goes well

Hi Nikki, didnt have any mouth problems during chemo, they gave me an iceblock as this slows the cell division in your mouth down or something (same principle as the cold caps). I tried fasting for a couple of days before chemo as that is said to enchance the effect of the chemo, but I found it hard and it increased my nausea. Apart from the anti nausea meds I also used ginger tablets and seabands which I think all helped to make it less.

went for chemo 56 today no news about my scan. I'm going to go with no news is good news and assume all is well with my head and hopefully there's a working brain in there. Had a long shift at work after chemo and just got home. So glad my son is making tea even if it is homemade burgers. So exhausted.

Hope every one is having a good day and that you are feeling less tired KT

Have a good rest/sleep tonight Shazza. I guess no news is good news. Hope so :)

I didn't get up till 1:30 pm yesterday! Felt much better after that. Work was ok, another day off tomorrow :)

    Have a good night all

Thanks Woody, I picked up some seabands and ginger tablets just in case.

Shazza, I agree about no news being good news.

KT - awesome sleep in, I seem to wake up at 5.00am at the moment, regardless of what time I go to bed.  I hope that will change because it makes for a very long day!

Donna, I hope you had a good weekend.

Chemo orientation was good.  My husband got heaps out of it and was pleased that he came.  All the possible side effects and "what to watch for" stuff made me want to run out the door and keep running.  But, you've done it and I can too.

All this driving in and out of Auckland Hospital is very time consuming.  It look us over an hour to get in yesterday.  Hoping the traffic improves once the students go on study leave.

Morning ladies, what on earth has happened to the weather? We just had thunder and lightning in East Tamaki and I won't even mention what the motorway has been like this week :( Had such a boring weekend it was a pleasure to come to work yesterday. Kiwi the worst part of my Rad treatment was finding parking at Auckland Hospital, very stressful. Not to mention turning right into the actual hospital itself, ridiculous. I hope everyone is feeling good and having a nice day, despite the weather.

hi ladies - not raining here but very windy - good ol' windy Wellington living up to its name.

I'm waiting at hospital now for my pelvic scan so keeping myself distracted reading your posts. They make you drink so much water beforehand that I'm busting!! Lol. They better not take long - 7 minutes late already!!!

KT good you had a big rest - Hopefully your eyes are feeling much better.

Woody your daughters party sounded great. Wow..a big teenager :)

Nikki - I didn't have any mouth probs either with chemo but did start off following all their instructions with the baking soda/salt rinse. Then just did it randomly every now and then.

Donna - sorry to hear you had a boring weekend but at least you enjoyed work.

Parking was bad here this morning too but got one eventually.

Still waiting....but last one now so must be next!! So I'll send this off in preparation .....

What a day! Was an impressive thunder storm this morning :) and the rain didn't stop till 3ish.

Good excuse to stay indoors & do some of the jobs around the house.

I hope the pelvic scan went ok Kruise & you didn't have to wait too long! I hate that feeling :)

Still tired, but I guess that's my new normal...

Nikki, don't worry too much about the chemo, it's not a walk in the park, but it really is doable, I thought it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I used to drive myself home after chemo (2 hour drive) and was fine, just keep up with the anti nausea meds. I had Neulasta shots too, because I live more than 30 mins away from the hospital, but you probably won't have those.

At A&E right now, cause dh has just about cut his finger off with a benchsaw, gone though his fingerjoint and tendons (didn't want to look too close)...

Ow! Your poor DH! I hope he's been seen to by now- I guess he'll be in for some surgery. Hope it heals fast.

No fun for you either Woody. Hope you get home for bed soon. Thinking of you both.

    Goodnight all

woody that sounds pretty gruesome. Hope your hubby gets seen ASAP. Not fun at all.

KT can I join you in the tired is the new normal club. I was shattered when I got home tonight. Thankfully my daughter had dinner under control as I'm stuck on the couch.

Just been watching my sons tiny lop eared bunny chase the cats around the house. They are terrified of it. So funny it may be tiny but it's very feisty and completely unaware its a prey animal.

Looks like I'm on dishes tonight. No rest for the wicked. Hope you are home safe soon Woody and good night to all.

Woody, your poor DH!  That sounds dreadful. I can't be doing with stuff like that, so I wouldn't have looked too closely either.  I'll be thinking of you both :-(

Thanks for the reassurance about the chemo.  I am beginning to think that nothing is as bad as you imagine it to be ...... and I include getting BC in that.   I have learnt so much about myself and how strong I can be.  I have also learnt that I can rely on my DH when the chips are down.  Something that hadn't been tested yet.  So far he's been a rock.  His mother was diagnosed with IDC a month before me so he's had to dig deep.

Thanks all, just got home & left hubby there, 2 hour round trip to Hastings. They are operating tomorrow, but they are not sure how much they can fix...but he'll keep the finger. Strangely enough he didn't feel much pain at all, must be the adreneline, amazing how our body copes with everything we throw at it.

Yes Nikki, its true BC certainly shows how strong you can be and you will get through it, great that your hubby has been such a rock (mine has too) cause that helps a lot.

Shazza shame you can't post videos on this cause that bunny sounds funny.

Woody, you must be exhausted!  Hoping that the operation goes well today, and that they can fix the stuff that needs to be fixed.

Fabulous thunder storm last night - did it wake you other Aucklanders up?  My 17 year old daughter was terrified and ended up in our bed, shaking like a leaf!  The boy slept right through it.  Oh to sleep like that!

Woody I hope you got a good nights sleep down in the Bay and you husbands surgery goes well today.

It certainly was wild and wooly in Auckland last night. I hardly slept a wink. Both the teenagers in my house slept right through and didn't hear a thing.  Singing

Hi all, I didn't hear a thing last night but I am in rural South Auckland, between Bombay and Hunua. One of the guys at work said it was so bad in Botany he never got any sleep and apparently it hit a house in East Tamaki and blew a hole in the roof. Hope everyone doing well today :)

  • Alyson
    Alyson Member Posts: 3,737

Heard the thunder but it was OK. Did rattle the windows well and my sister who lives with us thought her window was going to blow in. Another friend out in Howick thought the roof was coming off.

1966 pleased things are moving forward. I did FEC-T and it was fine. Had taste problems, lost hair by day 12 and some neuropathy from the taxol but you cope. I had a port which was wonderful the onc took one look at my arm after all my tests and scans and said no way would they ever find a vein best thing I did.

Going to have coffee with Angstapp this morning.

    Big hugs to all.

Have a lovely coffee :-)  Got to say that our house was shaking last night.  I thought our roof was going to blow.

They have started to have to take blood out of my hand as the arm vein has been bashed so much in the last few weeks.  I can now see how much sense the portacath makes.

I haven't always treated my body kindly, but I have tried to be fit and healthy for the majority of my life.  I exercise daily, try to eat well, take minimal medication etc, so all this medical intervention, peaking inside my body, filling me with drugs is quite a strange concept.

Sorry to hear about your hubby Woody. I hope his finger regains some feeling. They'll no doubt give him some rehabilitation exercises to do to help. Yes adrenaline is an amazing pain killer - that fight or flight reaction.

The lady doing my scan was lovely yesterday - she actually snuck out to talk with the doctor after doing it to check it was all ok - and came back to tell me it was all good and nothing to worry about at all. First time I've had instant results like that for ages! I have a follow up onc appt this Monday.

Hope you ladies have a lovely coffee Alyson & Angestap - and good luck for the bone scan Ange.

It's a gorgeous day here. Sun is shining.

Woody I've had my nip done, it's come out alright - a bit flat but then i didn't want the "headlights are always on" look, haven't bothered to get it tattoo'd as I feel a bit worried that they'll screw it up and i'll look ridiculous - never mind the lopsided and ugly scars - I worry about some stupid ink - Duh!!

Fertility Associates should be able to put you onto the right person Holly??

Alyson lovely meeting up with you today, lady that did my bone scan said "looks pretty good" - that a pass for me as far as I'm concerned :)

Auckland brunch meet up, how do the following dates suit?  22nd/29th November or maybe 7th/13th/14th December.

Angstap.  I can do any of those dates in December.  Glad the scan went well.

    Hi girls.

Angstap- I'm glad your scan looks good. Nice that you got to catch up with Alyson :)

How's your hubby Woody- did surgery go ok?

When do you get your port Kiwi?

I hope you're having a restful weekend Shazza (with a bit of fun too!)

Kruise- great your scan looks ok too!

I hope everyone's having a good weekend. Today's a rest day for me as I did pilates & painting yesterday. (My sister & her 9yr old came up to help, as well as my parents- so it was fun)

KT I get my port on Monday at Middlemore, which is after an ECG and oncology consult at Auckland.  Glad hubby is used to driving all over the city, and is really good at getting me to where I need to be, when I need to be there.

    Woody how's your DH?

    Hi all,
I've been off this thread for a while as it was pretty quiet, but I see things have picked up.  I noticed that you mentioned Chrissy a few pages back - is that Chrissy from Oz?  Coming to Auckland at the end of this month?  If so, she's invited me along too.  I'm going to see if I can afford to do it - may drive up from Welly.

Kruise - I see you're in Welly also.  I live in Otaki, but work (mostly) in Welly.

Woody - sorry about your hubby's finger. I sliced mine nearly off with a really sharp new paring knife while washing dishes and it didn't hurt until after the surgery.  I have regained most of the mobility and feeling in it with rehab.  Took a while, but it works.  Cured me of washing dishes by hand. :)

Glad the group is chatting again!

    Hugs to all,
    Terre

    Hi all, another lovely weekend.

Hubby is back home after 2 nights in hospital. They've manged to fix it up failrly well, one of the tendons was split vertically, not cut through, so they have manged to stitsh it up. All under local so he had a good look at what they were doing (ugh). He's got a metal splint which has to stay on for 10 days. A real bummer because he was reframing our bedrooms which was supposed to be finished before my dad comes over from Holland early Dec, at the moment it's all open. Told him he could have just said if he didn't want to do it...no need to put your finger in a saw!

Glad your scan was all good Kruise, so much better if they can tell you straightaway.

Will do a bit more research on the nipple thing..now use padded bras because I don't like the single headlight look.

hope the weather stays nice for today, enjoy your weekend!

woody glad your husband is back home and his finger sorted. I had a stick on nipple which I got through the bra subsidy. The brand is silima I think. It worked quite well. Now I have nothing at all on the other side after having my implant removed so I don't bother with it so much anymore.

My 20yo came over Friday and yesterday and cleared the mess in my garden for me as I don't seem to have the energy for yard work. Have just been sitting out with my daughter eating a late breakfast and enjoying his hard work.

Terre glad to see you back again.

Hope everyone else is having a great weekend. I'm still recovering from a party on Friday night. Apparently 3 beers is all it takes these days.
