I'll soon be joining you, sisters. Reconstruction doesn't appeal to me at all, and we'll see how I feel mostly going without prostheses.

Very Interesting article on a brainwave from a German Doctor. Blind people have a highly developed sense of touch and have proved far better than their sighted peers at finding very small tumours in women presenting for a breast exam.

Thanks for posting that. I would love to see that done here. One focus showed up on the mammo and ultrasound. The 2nd one was totally invisible and discovered by accident. It was larger and higher grade. No one could feel either one.

I just had a double no recon yesterday! I love your attitude and please keep posting! For so many reasons going flat was the right choice for me but I have to admit I have she'd a few tears. Especially now when I'm full of drains and bandages. How can I be flat and sexy? How do you psych yourself up for that? Thanks again for your post!

Littleblueflowers, Welcome. Nothing wrong with mourning what you've lost. For the future, sexy is in your head. If you feel sexy you will be perceived that way. I agree it's hard to be full of drains and bandages. Here's hoping you have a speedy recovery and get rid of those drains as soon as possible.

LIttleblueflowers,  I had a BMX with no reconstruction as well. Those drains and bandages are the worst.  I shed more than a few tears over the girls.  I don't know what your home life is, but I leaned a lot on my husband and he has always told me that he did not marry me for my boobs and that my boobs did not define who I was.  So, after two moments of silence for them, we moved on to prostheses and while they are not quite the same, he still takes the "blind feel" test when I buy them and if he doesn't approve, I send them back.  A BMX definitely changes your definition of sexy, but with the right toys and no lights, anything can happen!!!!

Hang in there, littleblueflowers!  You are newly post-op and must heal.  The drains really suck and you will feel a lot better when they come out.  You can be sexy flat, or you can wear prosthetic boobs,,, often known as foobs!,, and our very own Ariom can guide you with fashion, cuz she is our fashion goddess. There are some great websites that you can check out. Our very own Erica runs www.breastfree.org     and check out flat and fabulous.org,,, they are on FB too.

I'm still having trouble finding swimsuits for flatties. They all have pockets for foobs. I have an old one that might work if I could find it but no luck so far. I've looked on breastfree.org and googled a bunch.

Magdelene:  what type of swim suit do you want?  Do you want pockets for foobs?  Land's End has good MX swimsuits if you do.  If you don't want pockets, try looking for ones with ruffles at the top for disguising the flat top look if you want. I thought Land's End had some like that too.  They have TONS of suits on their site.  I also like their tugless tank. That was always my favorite suit.   And I have a tankini one that I wore last year on vacation,,, no pocket for foob, but I just went flat on that side and no one seemed to notice.

I've never even gotten fitted for foobs even though insurance would pay for them, I've just gone flat ever since surgery. After struggling with 44DDDs for so many years, I'm happy to be flat. And I definitely prefer a skirt type. Thanks for the suggestion.

Mags:  try a google search for ruffle bathing suit,, or ruffle tankini top??   I found this:  http://www1.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/magicsuit-rita-ruffle-v-neck-tankini-top?ID=586806   May not be your style but gives you an idea.

This place has some interesting suits too!  http://www.chikaradesign.com/flash.html#/collection/swimwear/5

I kind of like this top at Land's end too.  http://www.landsend.com/pp/StylePage-451236_AH.html?CM_MERCH=REC-_-FPPP-_-GGT-_-1-_-451236-_-451232

Hello all you flat and fabulous sisters!

I read through all 123 pages of this thread and it has easily become my favourite on this website. It took me almost 2 weeks since I followed just about all of the still active links in order to learn as much as possible from you wonderful women. I feel like I already know so many of you!

My name is Kornelia and I had BMx with no reconstruction on March 23rd. I don't plan to ever reconstruct. I agree with many of you who find the practice barbaric. My health and ability to live my life which includes being physically active is so much more important to me than society's ideas of female beauty. I had a bad motorcycle accident almost 29 years ago in which I broke both elbows. I have some strength and mobility limitations from that and so there's no way I would choose to do anything that might add to my physical limitations. I need all my muscles and find it just horrible that doctors don't inform women of the problems that will occur when muscles are involved in surgery. All it took for me to decide never to pursue reconstruction was looking at how reconstructions are performed.

I was lucky in that my surgeon, who is a general surgeon and not specifically a breast surgeon, never pushed me to reconstruct. Shortly after giving me my dx in person he did mention in passing that I could choose to reconstruct. At my follow-up appointment just before scheduling the surgery, I informed him that I was not interested in reconstruction and he never mentioned it again. In fact, he said that if he had to make the decision that he would choose the same. He never even mentioned meeting with a PS.

I specifically asked for no extra skin and it looks like he has done a very good job. I do have a little "poofiness" at the base of where each breast was. When I asked him if that would go away, he said it would. Did any of you have that poofiness? Did it go away after time? Mine does seem to go away when I move my shoulders and arms back far enough but when I just stand with my arms at my sides it's pretty obvious. I am slim (5'-8" and 130lb) and have pretty good muscle definition in my shoulders, arms, chest, etc. My deltoids, biceps, upper pecs, and serratus anterior were all quite well defined before my surgery. I would like to keep working on building upper body muscles after I have recovered sufficiently so that I can continue to look like the strong and healthy woman that I consider myself to be.

I have spent some time during my recuperation so far in making my own microbead breast forms with instructions from http://mastectomysolutions.com/sew-your-own-breast... which I found thanks to this site. I'm about half done with the forms and will finish them this week. I'm also working on a homemade mastectomy camisole made from a tight fitting tank top and one of my old bras. Again, the idea came from momine on this thread. Thank you! I was small breasted (barely a B cup) before, so my new shape is not radically different. I got a set of "breast enhancers" (also thanks to this thread) for $14 from the local Walmart. They seem perfect to just put in a sports bra for a little extra shape. They sure seem heavy though! I also went shopping at a thrift store and tried on lots of tops to see what would work for going flat. I bought several. The more I read here, the more I think that I will go flat much of the time. Options are good though.

I just requested to join the flat and fabulous facebook group and look forward to seeing and sharing with many of you there.

Thanks Melly for starting this thread and thank you all for keeping it alive for going on 3 years! This thread has been incredibly helpful in my healing journey. Hugs to all of you,

    Kornelia

Welcome Kornelia! so glad you found us and I agree, this and the other Living Without Reconstruction threads, are so much help, when you begin this flat, or partly flat journey.

I wish you all the very best. Although it sounds like you have a handle on your clothing and foob needs, there is a good thread called Al things Bras and Prosthesis where there are many tips for these items, which you may or may not, need in the future.

Let us know how you're getting on!

Thanks Ariom! And thank you also for posting your story and photos on breastfree.org. That site has been really helpful as well. I have not yet worked my way through the All things Bras and Prosthesis thread, but it's on the list of ones I'm interested in. Thanks for mentioning it.

I go to meet with my surgeon tomorrow and get my pathology results. Hoping and praying for clear nodes and not too many or horrible treatments to come.
