Hermits- well I wish that COLD and SNOW would leave the midwest and northeast! I think I heard it is creeping down into the Southeast now too? Still mild and dry out west but some hope of things changing soon.

Found out a family gathering in the works for late July in Rhode Island. May try to go so I can see a family of cousins I have not seen in awhile. Two of them were out to visit last fall, but I need more cousin time. Anyone here know the Naragansette area and have recommendations for a beachy type hotel?

Went to writing class tonight and there is a fellow in the class whose family is also from PA and he too had a grandfather who was a coal miner. He is critiquing my short story, since he knows the place, the stories of that time too. How cool is that?

Jazzy I swear u'r life is not real==u go to a class and meet someone whose grandfather worked the mines--How unbelieveably fun for u. I'm so glad.

OK a little warmer but still very cold, and there is nothing that will stop this so we just take it.

Oh and oh so funny Spookie---we all appreciate warm weather in the winter, but u have to admit a big change to have 4 seasons. hahaha one thing we do have. So laugh now at our horrific weather but we will laugh when our spring is 70's and u'r hot and humid in the 90's.Winking

You are right Teka ... "showing up is half the fun."  I also had fun playing beach ball volleyball with a granddaughter yesterday morning.

No Teka ... we were naughty kids playing in the house.  Fortunately it was a beach ball as a stray volley hit the TV.

Blondie- I am writing a story based on my fathers family that was from Clearfield County out in mid to western PA. My fathers father was a coal miner in the early part of the century, and had his own company until the Depression took everything down. My father would tell us all these great stories about his fathers experiences in the mines, and I am weaving a lot of it into a short story.

My writing partners family was from the Williamsport area from what he said. My father started college at Williamsport and later finished at Brown Univ. in RI. My writing partner, Wade, shared some stories about his grandfather with me that sound so similar. I think he is about 10 years younger and his grandfather was mining into the 50s. My grandfather was such a sweet man and he died of black lung when I was only 11. I always wished he had been in my life longer.

I am glad your chemo is done and hoping you feel okay as you work through the next few days. Do you have a touch of the flu or this just part of the reaction? The flu is bad here where I live in NM. Shot has protected me so far but not so for many of my friends.

By the way hermits, good news on my blood sugar issues. My A1C that was 6.5 in Sept and had me at the line of diabetes is now 5.7 after five months and a lot of lifestyle changes, including cutting sugar out of my diet, limiting alcohol, doing a lower car thing at mealtime. I will keep working on the food journaling with the nutritionist and working to get the weight off with her help. I am turning this thing around.

Jazzy, good job with your sugar levels ... I know that was a hard dietary change to make.

Teka, what happened that you felt rung out?  Was it the weather?  Glad you are feeling better today.

I totally forgot about ground how day, well I guess all the snow we're getting NOW took my mind off of it. Good bye to January weather, but the beginning of Feb, is not so good here either, So we'll see. And it's all done in PA, what a stressful day for that groundhog.

    Hi hermits:

Thanks for all the good feeback on the A1C test. Talked to a few of my more serious diabetic friends who were some of my advisors when things hit the limit last year. They all said to do the lifestyle changes immediately, and I can turn it around. Talked to a couple of them via e-mail and in person today and they were glad to hear the new results. I have felt for a good 18 months that my health has been spiral out of control with the ruptured appendix, bc diagnosis and then diabetic issues. I felt like I went from a health 52 year old to a complete train wreck. I am maybe just starting to feel I am turning some things around. It is a long road out of all this stuff.

Lily- you are very right about sugar being addictive. Although I have cut it out of my diet before, never permanently and for this long. Perhaps what I am realizing is that maybe sugar has been for me what other substances are for people like alcohol and drugs. I cannot have just a little. So it is just something I need to stay away from.

It was 70 degrees here today! We are hearing rain may be coming. We are hoping.....
