Cami- I love the things you write about me! I just wanted to share how things have changed for me the past year. You know for a long time, you are just trying to survive, get through every day, keep up with what you have to. I may be starting to really move beyond survival now into the new phase/chapter I knew would be coming. My focus this year is on health- healthy body, healthy relationships, healthy work situations!

The story will have an interesting twist you won't expect!

A few people asked how I hurt my back. On September 3rd I was making a turn when a car hit my car at approx 45 mph. on the drivers side rear quarter panel, actually directly into the rear wheel. It actually broke all of that snapping it off. Totaled my car a big Toyota highlander. The seat belt and shoulder strap tightened down so hard I couldn't believe it. The side air bag walloped me in the head and shoulder and upper back, hard. I was immobilized and take to the ER. The ER Dr requested a Cat scan of my cervical vertebrae. He referred me back to my Dr.and therein came the problem. My Dr left the practice and I didn't actually have a specific Dr. Only three Drs were left and I had seen one for a UTI two different times. I finally went to see him in October, he gave me a referral for PT. I went to PT. The pain did not lessen in my back. Other pains did lessen as time passed and I was strengthened. It became somewhat simpler to get in and out of bed, it was nearly impossible the first few months.

Fast forward to January and my Onc appt. She ordered an MRI right off, she wrote re-staging for the reason. This pain in my back could have been Metastasis and I thank God that it wasn't. It is a compression fracture, She referred me back to my Dr and he right off referred me to an orthopedic surgeon.. I now have an appt at the Ortho for Feb 6, first appt.

Funny thing is if I am sitting I don't hurt. If I stand up and start to walk I hurt badly, too badly to continue on after about 20 steps. I have a stool in the hall and a shower chair in the bath, a chair in the garage and a chair by the door of our bedroom. I do not do any kitchen work or cleaning. Just standing hurts just as badly. I think I was overlooked at the ER because there was someone who, as staff put it, was very sick so they didn't spend much time with me. The RN and Dr apologized for being so busy elsewhere.  I was so stunned by being in an accident and hurting so much that I felt glad my neck was not broken. The rest of the pain I thought it would go away. I am 68 and a pretty patient person. I was really glad my DGD who was in her car seat in the back seat wasn't injured, she is 3 years old and my joy.  This was the first accident that I had been in and I am still surprised by how much it affected me. Thanks for asking, I hope my explanation makes some sense to you.

If I wasn't me I would have been yelling at me to go back to the ER. Alas I didn't.

DGD is coming over for a play date at noon so I am off for a while to read and play ponies and such. :)

    Hugs Ginger

Can I join this club please?  I started this 'journey' 9 months ago, and can so relate to what has been discussed.  I was already suffering from severe depression before diagnosis, and life is obviously more difficult now.  Has anyone else been depressed and anxious, even before having breast cancer?  I have become even more of a hermit.  Even getting dressed feels too much effort, and I often stay in my pyjamas.  Like you, I also get asked all the time when will I get the All Clear, and am told that now I have had treatment it can be put behind me.  It doesn't feel that easy.  I agree that only others who have gone through this can really understand.  By the way, I love the cat pictures and captions, they really cheer me up.  Thanks a lot.

Hi hermits- welcome Louise2! Yes, we all get a lot of that "are you all done with it now, everything back to normal?" We know there is only the new normal we must find after everything. My journey began 17 months ago, and it is still sometimes very much one day at a time for me. We have a lot of cat (and animals) lovers here so it is a good place to hang out. We are an easy going bunch, often known as the "judgement free zone!" Glad you found us.

Ginger-your story with it taking so long to find out what is really going with your back is sad to me, but also not surprising. I work in healthcare, and know ERs are filled with lots of other problems and sometimes people get sidelined. It used to be that ERs were the place to go and get checked out after a car accident, but now many other things get put first (including the ever present gun shot injuries, drug overdoses, etc.) I am sorry it took you so long to get diagnosed, but glad they finally figured out the problem. You have been through a lot and hope you continue to heal and feel better every day.

Teka- I think a soak in the tub is on my agenda for this evening too.

Went for a walk. It stimulated me to come home and work more on my short story. I think I have got the setting done and the beginning of character development. I decided on my walk there were other interesting things my father told me about his father's experiences that I can roll into this story. I am spinning the canary tale now....

Who is watching the Grammy's tonight? They are coming here in another half hour.

It's -25 here with the wind chill.  I walked the tag to the can but that as adventurous as I'm going to get today.  We have a wind chill advisory until 12pm Tuesday.

The dance team took 2nd for their pom routine at regional competition.  My daughter and niece both dance on the team.  I get to be a proud mama and a proud aunt.  :)  State competition on Saturday.

Ginger, I'm so sorry for how you've suffered all this time. A broken back and nobody knew? Wow! It's amazing you didn't cause more damage by moving around. You're a TROOPER, you are!

We basically crawled to church today. It snowed all day yesterday and today until around noon. Though we did have a heat wave. It got all the way up to 23 degrees today. Warmest it's been all week. We went to O'Charleys for lunch. There are 5 of us that go each Sunday ( 6 when we have a Grandkidlet...most weeks) but today we were a party of 12.

My Grandaughter, Kaylen, Drew this picture. I told her I'd share it with you all.

Fur- I am watching it but it just started 30 min ago.

I have to say I liked the Robin Thicke/Chicago performance. Unlikely pairing of musicians, but they made it work!

    Jazzy,

You are one Fab lady, working on a book? That must be so thrilling for you!  I need to start reading novels again. My mind has been all over the place and I have such an issue with concentration.  This has been going on for over a year now. I am going to make it a point to start reading again this week.

I hope you gals have a great week.  I will be in touch as I have my consult for Rads tomorrow.

Jazzy I'm so old I hardly understood any words--if it wasn't for Joey I wouldn't have known anything. And Willie Nelson etc. I didn't like what they sang at all. Oh I'm so picky.

Jazzy girl, yes I did write about George Clooney,  you weren't dreaming. I wrote that he is a hunk, he is perfectly proportioned and is just all around bigger than one would think from films.   My DD used to work for Warner Bros for a producer who produced many of Clooney's enterprises. Then Clooney opened his own production company there and he was around on the lot.   I also got to go to parties with my DD.

Teka if you are a fan of Clooney you have excellent taste.

    Hugs Ginger

Hi hermits- hard day at work, too many expectations in every direction! I try to make it a reasonable day and came home to make some chicken fajitas (just the chicken mix with some guac and sour creme) and two cups of fresh vegetables. Yummy dinner!

Went to lunch with a friend today who has had cancer not once, but twice now (two different kinds) and is struggling to get the his insurance to pay for some treatments at MD Anderson in Houston that they won't. So sad to me, I went out of state for some of my treatment and got my insurance to approve my treatments without any problem. His health plan is not one I have or am looking to enroll in when I need to change this spring, but it creates an awareness for me as I shop in the market.

He told me that he has several friends who have obtained new plans and have had their pre-existing conditions denied for coverage when the time came for care or medicines. I thought to myself "how can that be, the new laws have made that illegal?" So I did some research after work and here is something to know IF you are going to be looking on the market for new insurance.

The individual plans you may purchase outside of the new healthcare exchanges may be considered "grandfathered plans" and my exclude pre-exisiting conditions. They won't deny you coverage, but won't cover any earlier conditions. So it is really important to enroll before the end of the period open this year (end of March) and through the ACA to make sure you medical expenses are covered for any ongoing care for bc (or anything else you have going on!)

    https://www.healthcare.gov/what-if-i-have-a-pre-ex...

I sort of new that it was important to re-enroll before the end of the deadline, but wanted to share with you in case anyone else out there is looking to buy insurance in the market place this spring before the ACA enrollment ends that you have to be careful about what type of plan you choose. You DON'T want to enroll in anything considered a grandfathered plan. The link above from the gov web site explains it too. So buyer beware!
