    Regarding the sugar and breast cancer issue. That came up at our retreat this fall as a question to the panel of doctors in the Myth vs Truth session. Being overweight is a risk factor, and the doctors said if eating too much sugar was causing you to gain weight then it would increase your risk, but sugar in and of itself was not a cause of breast cancer. Everything we eat is eventually turned into glucose so to avoid getting sugars into your system you'd have to starve yourself. As with everything, sugar in moderation is safe.

    Puffin I too have read the same thing about sugar. But as I mentioned before sugar is actually bad for your heart:

    afternoon all, been out at gym and then shopping, the BB&B is an evil place! 

    Peggy, my repairs are not related to Sandy, but my house has been sort of settling over the years and I had a bad leak in the upstairs B'room.  The soil around here is sandy~~as you would expect being 15 miles to the coast,  Sandy has meant that a lot of homes were deemed for tear down but I actually did not get any water in the basement during the storm.  I was hugely lucky really.  Think it is because the neighbors were pumping out the water with their sump pumps and that the underground streams just missed my place! 
    But if I did not fix my leak, think I would have had my bathtub in my living room at some point!  But leak is fixed and far enough along that I bought new towels today!

    For those with hip pain, have you tried some stretching?  there are lots of yoga stretches, I used to have hip pain but trainer showed me some good .....tricks and no more hip issues.

    I think I would have fired a doc who put a boot on  me with out a need!  I know I wore the boot when my foot (big toe broken 8 times) and it made me walk funky while I was wearing it which was a great way to mess with my back!

    OK, tired from all my shopping today so need some wine before the little people show up!

    Iris, glad your repairs are not Sandy-related.  Tub in  living room is not what *I'd* want :)  

    Definitely need wine fortification for the little ones.  It's raining with a windchill of 29° now at 4PM.  And it will be colder by 6.  Maybe SNOW flurries.  I'm bummed out.  Need to get out the space heater to sit on my enclosed front porch with the candy.  Gloves.  Down coat.  I think coffee might be in order too.

    Goodness Peggy, not  sure I would do the space heater for the little trickers, just got my first, the Hulk and a Fairy princess.  It is chilly and damp in NJ but not so cold as you are.  I am sure the little ones were dandled in stuff though!

    The little ones don't come onto the porch, just the steps so they are never close to the space heater.  Our kids come between 6 and 7 and normal crowd is 300.  Probably will have fewer with this weather.

    I had foot surgery in May. Cast for 6 weeks (including 2 weeks with a knee scooter), boot for 3 weeks after that. It definitely messed up my hips. I had an x-ray and an MRI, both of which showed nothing. My hip still bothers me.  No one bothered to balance the cast or the boot to my shoe/sandal. I balanced it the best I could with a pair of sandals I had, but I couldn't wear that all the time. Sometimes I think doctors are only concerned with their area of the body and don't really think about the impact of what they do to rest of the body.

    Bren it's hard to find the specialist that will look at the entire picture (although I have a few ). That's why having a good primary care is so important.

    with my foot surgery, I was more worried about getting my back messed up than about the dang toe!  Guy did a good job on the toe but wow, I needed my trainer at the gym to work a plan on the back and hip!

    Iris, that's rotten.  You don't expect to come out worse than you went in with broken toes.

    actually Peggy, it was one of those fears that did not materialized but really because I was so aware and got back to my gym and stretching as soon as the doc allowed. Fortunately my surgeon had worked for one of the sports teams so he got the idea that I wanted to get back to working out quickly.  healing of bones takes  certain time so you do need to be cautious

    Glad it didn't materialize, Iris.  Smart surgeon!  I chipped my elbow when I was young and it seemed I was in a cast forever and then it took quite awhile before I could straighten out my arm.

    well the reason I needed the foot surgery was that when I was young and stupid I wore high heels to run around the streets of NYC on sales calls, I would slip and break my big toe.  Repeatedly, and delayed the surgery because I thought I could not take off work!  so it got worse, the knob on my bunion got bigger and.....had to do it finally!  so.....better now,

    Iris, I'm a high heeled girl too but never broke anything (thank heavens).

    I'm doing fine.  Still tired, probably partly due to stress over DH.  He is doing so-so.  I have no idea of how his rehab is going to turn out.  If he'll be good enough to come home and me care for him or if he is beyond my ability to care for him and thus a nursing home.  Thanks for asking!

    DEXA SCAN RESULTS!!!!

    Good morning ladies, I hope it's much drier were you are than hre in NYC!  The rain is making me crazy....

    Anyway, I got back the results of my DEXA Scan and they are BAD.

    Total OSTEOPOROSIS!   First my Oncologist suggested that if the results were not favorable, she might switch me to Tamoxifen. After the results she told me that a much better option for me, would be to get PROLIA shots every six months.

    She went on to explain step by step, what are  some of the SE of the Prolia. The bottom line is that whatever SE I am experiencing from the Arimidex, would get worse from the Prolia.

    As it is my back always hurts,  I have muscle and joint pain, stomach pain, high cholesterol.  

    I don't know what to do!

    I anyone using the Prolia?  I read some reviews and the seem to be mixed. Some women have no SE and some women

    wished they never heard of Prolia.

    Mena, I have no thoughts for you but was wondering:  Is this your first scan?  Did you have one before starting Arimidex?  Sounds like your choices are crap - DAMN!!  Many hugs!  Hope someone has some experience to offer for your consideration.

    A friend of mine (who was also stage I) went into this already with  full blown Osteoporosis, so she had an Endocrinologist involved with her team (at her insistence) from the start. I believe her oncologist was more leaning the way yours is toward the Arimidex plus shots, but, in her case, the endo said 'no way', and she ended up taking Tamoxifen. If nothing else, I'd consult with one before making any decisions.

    Feeling a little worse lately - more achy.  Ladies, do you notice if you feel worse in the fall?  They happened to switch me from zoladex to lupron, so I can't figure out if its that, if its the colder weather, if I'm getting a little less exercise (I have slightly decreased) or what.  

    BTW is anyone else on this thread also doing zoladex or lupron?

    Mena, no experience with the osteoporosis but I dread my first follow up DEXA because I can't go back to tamoxifen and osteoporosis runs in my family.  

    Chocolate is definitely good for the heart and did you see they found a chocolate supplement helped improve alzheimers.  I can't wait till they come out and say it helps prevent breast cancer recurrence if you eat more chocolate!  LOL, we haven't seen that news have we?  Well the thing I like about chocolate is I can have one serving and it is a reasonable amount of carbs/sugar.  I don't feel bad giving up the breads and pastas if I can have my little chocolate treat a few times a week.  

    Redheaded I finally gave up the sugar in my coffee after all these years.  It was by far the hardest change I have made.

    Pontia, I had a Scan done when I started the arimidex 2 yrs.ago. In  two yrs. That scan already showed that I had Osteoporosis and now after two yrs. It has gotten way worse!

    Mena, UGH!  I think RuthBru's thought of seeing an endocrinologist sounds like a good plan.  Then have the docs give you choices for how to proceed.  I wouldn't have  thought of the endocrinologist.

    I was diagnosed with osteopenia many years before my BC stuff.  I took Actonel for years, stopped at one point as I read about some SE of the drug and that it was not good to take for very long period.  At the time of my diagnosis, my DEXA should I was fine no osteopenia.  But when I was diagnosed I began a new exercise program with lots of weights.  My most recent DEXA now after the 5 years of AL shows only small amount of osteopenia.

    All this is a way of saying whatever your docs decide, do look into working out with weights to help you
