    Where the money goes ....

    RESTRICTED DONATIONS

If you want to make certain that any donations you make to an organization go for what you intend --- eg. Research ...

then you must restrict your donation. This is not difficult. When you send in a donation you can write that the donation is restricted for 'research only'.

Beyond this ...  you can even restrict this donation further. For instance, if you want your donation to be applied to a specific area of research funding you might write "donation is restricted for scholarships for research only" or "donation is restricted for awards and grants in scientific research only and may not be used for administrative costs of the organization including salaries, printing, travel, ..."

And this not only applies to an individual, but also applies to companies and such. So if you are concerned that a particular $100,000 promised to be given to Komen from the sale of an item will end up in the education pot, then write letters to that manufacturer suggesting that they restrict that $100,000 for awards and grants for scientic research only.

My husband has worked in the field of not-for-profits for over 25 years. Believe me I have been educated by the best :-)

I do want to emphasize, however, that there are costs to fundraising. It does take money to raise money. Reputable 501 c 3's will spend money to bring in the funds because that money spent in overhead brings greater results and because there is competition for every fundraising dollar (to put it bluntly).

Stand Up 2 Cancer may put 100% into research .. but there is a cost in producing those programs, making those t-shirts, funding those phone banks, keeping its website functional, etc. It may be that the celebrities participating in those programs are funding the 'behind the scenes' costs in order for the donations to go to research only or patient grants only ... but someone is paying someone for those other costs.

I write the above not to suggest that anyone is ignorant of this, but I have read a lot of "I'm only giving to such and such organization if they state that 100% goes to such and such". You would be hardpressed to find a charity where 100% of the donations received go to a certain area - eg. 'research' (cancer), 'housing' (disaster relief), 'tuition and scholarships' (educational institutes), etc.

Even Stand Up 2 Cancer's financial disclaimer states this:

"100% of public funds go directly into research grants. A portion of the funds that are raised from major donations and third-party fundraising go towards administrative expenses and overhead." (emphasis mine)

What I find interesting is that one cannot read the actual financial statements of Stand Up 2 Cancer on its website. I cannot find a disclosure statement which actually shows detailed information on how the money is spent. Although they speak of financial transparency, it would be beneficial to actually read the real numbers. I'm not slamming SU2C, just pointing out that the actual numbers are not easily found. (Edited information below *) If you go to say the American Cancer Society website and type "financial statements" into the search engine, the first result is "Combined Financial Statements" and you can read an audit by Ernst and Young for 2010 and 2009. If you go to Komen's website, there is a link to financial information with full disclosure of audited financial statements (Ernst and Young), annual reports, and IRS parent forms filed - all going back to 2003-04.

I'm not defending where the money goes for any particular 501 (c) 3 ... but we should be able to read for ourselves where the money goes.

Hope this helps someone make informed decisions.

    *Edited to ADD:

SU2C is actually a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. (Fine print at bottom of SU2C's web page). You can go to EIF and read financial statements for the EIF.

Ok, so at the end of the month I should get a commission check from shirt sales. Where do you gals want me to put it? Half is going to BCO. Where should the other half go? (the total should be about $30, so we're not talking lots here).

I think 10% of a sales price is a pretty good donation for a $40 item.  That's not 10% of the profit, it's probably a bigger part as there are the costs associated with the product itself and marketing.  The fact that you could track down that information means that SKIL is being open about their donation.  They are capping it at $100K though, and that means that if I decide I need/want a pink thing and the company has already hit the $100k mark or whatever the "cap" might be, none of my purchase will be added to the donation.

I know I personally have very limited funds with no job and the medical expenses. When I get back to work here soon though. Maybe if everyone spread the word on Facebook or whatever social media they aavail themselves of it would help??? Something like if you want to buy a shirt that a real cancer survivor would appreciate, look at... Ok, something better than that. I just woke up and the creative juices are barely flowing, you get the drift. :-)

I have a ton of plain t-shirts that I'm going to put iron on letters from walmart on. I'm going to check out hobby lobby too. They have all kinds of ways to put your own messages on a shirt for us poor folk. Lol

Thanks for the kind thoughts, Mini. The LAST thing I want to do is take $$ out of my sisters pockets. If you have it and want it, fine. It costs me nothing to design the shirts and put them up on the website. It keeps me busy at night, and is fun. If I sell some, great, and if not, that is ok, too. Chemist by day, shirt designer by night. I will be wearing mine though as soon as I get them! I'm trying to figure out how to give a coupon code so that a discount can be applied. If I do, I'll certainly give it out!

I don't know how many of you are on FB, and how many friends each of you have - I keep mine very limited to less than 75 - but even so, if we took all of the slogans that have been generated here and posted one each day during the month of October as our status, making sure we changed it each day, we would reach all of our FB friends, and many of them will re-post.  I have been working on collecting all the slogans into one document - has anyone else already done this?  If so, I don't want to re-invent the wheel, and please let me know where they are.  If not, I will post them here - I am much slower at this than I had intended to be.

I just saw the most obnoxious thing at the store. Of course I forgot my phone so I didn't get a picture. It was a pen with a woman on the top with pink boxing gloves on. You push a button and the arms punch. Think of the old Rock 'Em Sock'Em robots. My jaw literally dropped. It was in the middle of a whole collection of cheap, pink crap that appeared to be geared toward children. The store manager better be glad that I was in a hurry.

  • Linda-n3
    Linda-n3 Member Posts: 1,713

Oh, Granny, you crack me up!!!! I am sure we can post bail for you if you get arrested, but you will have to figure out how to let us know where to come picket the jail where they hold you!!!! Yeh, maybe we will just picket, let you sit in there for a while and cause trouble with the jailers, ratting your tin plate on the bars, causing a ruckus with the other prisoners, convert them all to the Pinktober Revolution cause.... maybe we can formulate some type of jail break and turn them all loose on society after you have converted them..... We could make CNN headlines!!!!

    Mini1 Member Posts: 1,309

Maybe the jailers could put little pink ribbons on the tin plates in October so the prisoners can contribute to the cause. :-) I always say that there's a reason I don't have a permit to carry. October is going to add a whole lot of things to my list of reasons why.

SAS, our fearless leader, has been missing from the boards for over 4 days.  Does anyone have her contact information and can check on her??? This is just not like her....

Veggy, I did chemo in Oct 2010-Dec 2010.  There was no obvious pink anywhere.  I wore my "BCBDU" (Breast Cancer Battle Dress Uniform) - forest green camouflage - to each treatment, everyone from the lab to the nurses in the infusion center to the MO who saw me each visit responded very positively to my attitude "NFP" ("no f***ing Pink!), helped me to keep a very military-type mindset during that time.  I would kind of like to get that mindset back soon, am working on it as I face the next phase of this war.  I got a little sidetracked with a lot of peace/love/be nice/think nice, etc, which really helps me in many ways to see what I can still give to others, but doesn't help me in the actual planning the BIG WAR against BC right now.  What chemo will you be doing? How can I help you?

I can do the keep calm & carry on, I can do the being in the moment, I can do the BC has attacked me and I am going to retaliate with everything I've got!  What I cannot do is tell you how great so many other women have done and how courageous they are now that it is all behind them and they are doing so great and are so filled with gratitude blah blah blah, and "you can, too!".  I think the standard they set, the standard for dealing with BC that all the inspirational books are written about - those standards are ridiculous, making those of us who come through treatment scarred, fatigued, with long-term SEs from that treatment, unable to go back to a full working life, caring for family & careers - make some of us feel like failures for not measuring up to those standards.

I would dearly LOVE to use my "time off" to train for a marathon, do great things - the truth is that I am forced to take time off because I am unable to balance work and healing, unable to compelete even daily normal tasks because the energy required is more than I have, thanks to chemo & neuropathy, and training for a marathon or even participating in one of the walk for cancer of ANY color is beyond my physical ability.  I resent feeling like a failure, and I know that I am not one, but some days still feel that way, and those inspirational books that so many of my well-meaning friends and relatives have given me, those with pink covers or pink ribbons on the cover seem to stare at me and mock me.  So I am going back to camouflage, NFP!!!

dltnhm, thank you so much for the info on SAS - I am sure she posted somewhere that I regularly read and I just missed it.... just call me a worry-wort....

Wren, I like the shirt idea. Am feeling a lot more positive today than I was last night, sorry about the long rant yesterday.

    Hugs to all.

Linda, rant away. It's part of the process, and I'm glad someone else feels like I do from time to time. This "get over it" attitude my friends sometimes give me is hard to handle. I am over it, mostly, as I have rationalized my fear to the point that I can sleep now and don't obsess on every tiny detail of my pathology report, or read the JCO cover to cover anymore. Jeez that only took two years! I think we all deserve a camo shirt and a stainless steel armband or something to signify what we've been through. Some people just don't get it and never will.
