Waht a wonderful article....they deserve to go down...way down...I just hope im around to see it.

Just wondering what pinktober will be like this year.

The sad part is the people have no clue...not the runners or the purchasers.

If all the people who do those runs could only see that article....most of those runners just have been doin it for quite some time and still have no clue.

How man people really read the huffing ton post articles.

We the people have to do the work...if it was up to me there should be a march to Washington...but I'm an activist.

You should see me in Focktober!,,,

the Komen posts are starting on FB. I replied to a topic that I wished more than 15% of donations went towards research. seriously don't think these people know how there money s spent

fredntan, it's been my experience that often the majority of people don't know where there money is going when they donate to a cause, and many do.not.care.  I see it on a local level in my own small town, and of course on a national level with something like Komen.  [In the Ohio Valley where I live, over the years there has been theft in a number of well-intentioned organizations because most people only want to donate cash but not time, allowing unscrupulous people to be in charge and make off with large sums of money.]

In terms of bc, it's the idea that people prefer to "feel good" about the war on breast cancer, as the writer Peggy Orenstein says, rather than "make a difference".

I would go further with that and say it falls under "cheerleader" mentality. Let's hype it all up, rah, rah, rah!  Give, give, give!  Even in this day and age, women aren't encouraged to "think".  No, lets make it all pretty and palatable for the masses because who will give to an ugly cause? Oh, let's just mindlessly throw money at the problem and maybe it will go away...oh, and I can get a cute t-shirt or some pretty pink beads in the process...

Are we supposed to sit back and watch the parade of people who have no clue?

I know pinktober made a small impact last year...small.....

How can we make a bigger one this October?

Here's one way to camoflage your mastectomy scars. I admire her conviction. And her ability to be still long enough to have this done.

Wow, great article. They got what they deserved. Too bad the women with breast cancer didn't.

Thanks for posting that. It will be an interesting Pinktober!

Just ran across this thread, wow what emotions it has stirred up! When I was dx in dec all I could think of was the many Komen races/walks I had been a team leader at work for...for what? I became so angry at that pink ribbon! Some well meaning friends gave me gifts with the br cancer pink ribbon and I told my bff to let them know pink was NOT my favorite color. No more teams for me for Komen, Avon, or other pink intity!

DOWN WITH THE PINK! A CURE IS COLORBLIND!

Pink Ribbon Riders is a charity that helps women in MI, WI, CO, WY, and parts of NY. They give $500 gift cards so they can be used for transportation, bills, etc. I will be volunteering with them and making sure any money I give goes to this type of organization. Low overhead and high patient assistance. Pardon my french, but screw Komen, the stupid walks, and women prancing around in pink boas. Grrr.

Pink Fund in Michigan does a great job giving grants to women who lost their livelihood because of breast cancer!!  Started by a BC Survivor.  www.pinkfund.org

I have no affiliation with them - just like what they do!!   Breast cancer is expensive with or without insurance as you all know!

I just saw where the Clearwater Phillys will be having a bc game, with ALL proceeds going to Morton Plant hospital bc services. Yes, they run a pink van, but it's used to transport women for treatment.

If I liked baseball, I'd go.

To all, we all have discussed chemo/ anethesia brain. We now can call it anesthesia/chemo/drug brain. This article is in AARP magazine. It discusses the drug classifications that can cause memory loss. It describes why each drug class can cause memory loss. It gives specific names of drugs. It gives alternative drugs that can be substituted. I would suggest reviewing it with your prescribing doc if you have concerns regarding any of your meds. I also suggest you put it in your favorite places on your computer. Also, printing it off for future referrence if you have a printer. Please, pass this on to other BCO friends, friends etc. ;) sassy

Thanks for sharing that! I'm going to send it to my Mom. So much going on in her world with Parkinsons to boot. Good to pass on alternatives regarding OTC meds that might be adding to her memory loss.

    You're a gem!

Pink Ribbon Riders is a good one as well. They are in 7 states and give $500 gift cards (1x a year for 2 years max) which can be used for whatever the patient needs it for - gas, co-pays, therapy, anything. One recipient used it to buy a washer because she could no longer carry laundy baskets to the laundry mat. So far they have raised enough money that they haven't had to turn anyone away. My only affiliation with them is that I received assistance and I've volunteered a few hours there.

AAAHHHHH! It has started....I want to screeeeaaaam and vomit everytime someone calls, texts or emails me about the upcoming race for the cure actiivities. Why all of a sudden am I bombarded with all this? Oh, hey, I know....I have (wanting it to be HAD) breast cancer...duh...Just when I was getting to a really good place....healing both physically and emotionally. A year ago today was when I received THE CALL about my diagnosis. I really just want to be able to hopefully move on after all my upcoming follow ups....no, I do not want to be on the race committee...no, I do not want to sell pink crap....no, I do not want to spray paint my hair pink for the party...no, no, no!

Sorry for sounding so negative, I've really been trying to be upbeat in front of others but this is sending me over the edge. Oh, the joys of being hormonally challenged. Thanks for letting me vent. I promise to be better when I log back on.

Wingnut, this is a very appropriate place for your post.  Last year after my BMX my insurance compay was putting on the statement of benefits a reminder to get a mammogram.  It went on for several months and each time a statement came in I would  become upset.  It was like duh, no s..t Sherlock tell me something I don't know.  It must be in a cycle because it has started again.  So rant all you want on this thread.

Wingnut-you are sooo right and this is the best place to vent! Some people may get into the October pink and it's great for them. I just get angry looking at pink! Anger is a part of our grief process and I get my anger out toward the pink ribbon club. I didn't ask for a membership to this club! I really hate this f*#!king pink month! I am having my 3Rd surgery this year just before the race for the cure. Some cure? More pain then pills for 10 Yrs...cure, not really.

I was diagnosed the first time on October 3, 2011.  Did I really need for it to be the anniversary of the stupid pink movement?  NO.  As a feminist from the 60's and 70's, do I need the stupid pink stuff everywhere?  Nope.   Is there ever going to be a way for me to forget the date?  Probably wouldn't forget it anyway, but all the pink carp makes me a little queasy.  Tongue Out

Choosing Pink for the Komen stuff was like infantilizing all of the women with this dreadful disease.  There is nothing cute, sweet, or even feminine about cancer.  The fact that a bazillion other groups use the pink ribbon to symbolize breast cancer now, by taking Komen's lead, just makes the whole thing that much worse.  Blech!  Okay, I'll cut that rant short.  Thanks for listening.

We're all right there with you! I hate all the pink crap. Even our trash company offers pink trash containers. Arghhhh!

I have never been a fan of Komen because it is so in your face and particulary now because of my diagnosis.  Since then I have found out that they hijacked the ribbon and turned it pink when the inventor had it a peach color and wouldn't allow them use of it.  Plus, Komen is so big that I knew there  had to be a huge amount of the money for overhead and when I heard that the head of Komen who formed the Foundation in honor of her sister who died of breast cancer was being paid over $600,000 and was continuing to collect it after the Planned Parenthood dibocale that caused her to step down.  Oh don't get me started.  Oops, I guess I already have.  Can't stand how products turn pink in October.  I've told my husband he couldn't buy his favorite yogurt in October.  End of rant.
