I had no side effects from Zometa

@brutersmom im so happy to hear that you are feeling better on fulvestrant compared to the aromatase inhibitors AND your new team is treating you well. I am off Ibrance and just finished my first month of Kisqali. So far so good! No significant side effects and my neutrophils are higher at the end of the cycle compared to my 5 years on Ibrance .
Hope all are doing well !

@aprilgirl1 Glad to hear that your first month on Kisqali has gone well.
@brutersmom Just FYI-I've been on Xgeva for 8 1/2 years. Never had a side effect. The so-called infusion is a subcutaneous shot that takes about 30 seconds with no discomfort. It is more expensive than Zometa. Hope Zometa works well for you.

@brutersmom hi there. Good to hear you don't have bone mets. Coincidentally, at yesterday's MBC Monday Zoom meeting, we talked about preparation for Zometa and one strong recommendation was taking pain killers and claritin before and for a few days after the Zometa infusion.
I've been on biannual infusions since 2021. My previous Oncologist always empasiaed that i must remember to hydrate and take panadol (tylenol in the USA) and loratadine (same effect as claritin) for at least a week after the infusion. Despite doing all that, I've had nausea, and terrible pain spasms on my waist, hips and lower back after infusions. But from my group dudcussions, it turns out that some people don't have any reactions. I wish you all the best. And well done on the knee recovery. You've given me encouragement. Sending love and hugs ❤️🫂

@Rosebessie I had my infusion. They gave it slow. I did drink a lot of water before during and after. I really didn't have any side effects. Maybe some mild achiness but our weather here has been rain, ice, snow. Warm, below freezing, warm, below freezing. It is so unpredictible this time of year. Next week is to be in the 50's. I have never found claritan did much for achiness from cancer meds.

@brutersmom hi there, im very glad your Zometa infusion went well. Thinking about it, could the speed of the infusion be the reason I got side effects? I'm just wondering because I've never reacted so badly to Zometa. Last month wasn't good at all. Sorry your weather out there is not very patient friendly. Out here we're experiencing the exact opposite. Not surprisingly seeing as we're the other end of the planet. We're experiencing a heat wave. It's usually hot this time of year but for some reason this year feels extreme. Enjoy the rest if the week. Hugs 🫂 🤗

I’ve heard that putting the Zometa in slowly helps. One person said she gets fluids at the same time and it helps with SEs

Rosebessie - I have them draw my infusion out for 45 minutes, and I get fluids too. It has helped, but I still react. Just not as badly. Hope this is at least of some help.

Hello All,
After 13 progression free years, my bone mets have exploded. Yes, I always knew this was inevitable, but it was still a shock. I’m not sure, TBH, that I have fully comprehended what this means. I took my first Ibrance pill, 100 mg, today and will start Faslodex on Monday, after an echocardiogram. Fun morning at the medical center 😩.
I have read the first ten pages of this thread and then skipped around a bit, but wanted to thank all of you for your openness regarding Ibrance. This is a wonderful resource and very, very real.

I've on my 50th cycle of Ibrance along with Fulvestant injections. I've been metastatic to bones for 4 years. It has some uncomfortable side effects but it's worth it.

@exbrnxgrl so sorry. I am 2 years on Ibrance. Just switched to Fulvestrant because of my side effects to letrozole. I am NED. Did they suggest zometa or any other bone hardner.

@exbrnxgrl Here's some Ibrance tips:
- Drink lots of water-I aim for 64 to 72 oz/day. Helps with dryness
- Greek Yogurt is helpful in case you get mouth sores.
- I still take Ibrance with food-initially with the old capsules it was required, now it is not.
- Try to exercise several times a week-I think it helps the Ibrance to spread throughout the body.
- Don't be worried if you are tired at first-rest when you need to and then get back up.
Hope that Ibrance zaps your cancer cells and that you have minimal side effects. Let us know how it is going.

@exbrnxgrl when I first started on Ibrance, I experienced a lot of flatulence. A lot. Fortunately my husband and I were able to laugh about it, it's actually one of my sweet memories of him, us laughing so hard in the kitchen after one of my prolonged toots, that I slid to the floor while hanging onto the fridge door handle.
Also, my body reacted quite strongly to the high dose and we had to lower the dose after the first cycle. You'll be keeping an eye on your bloodwork (as will your MO), get ready for your white blood cell count to plummet.
Welcome to the Ibrance Dance!

I was on an older bone strengthener for three years early on in my tx but none was suggested this time. I am just as happy not to take any more drugs 😊 and my oncologist doesn’t seem too anxious to add any more.

@sf-cakes ha! Thanks for posting this! I also experienced excessive gas when starting Ibrance! I am also on a pik3ca inhibitor Inavolisib so I wasn’t sure if it was one, the other, or both. I’ve found a very low carb diet helps greatly. @exbrnxgrl ive been on the ibrance/fulvestrant combo for almost five months and so far have been feeling well, no SE. Will be thinking of you. Keep us posted xx

@exbrnxgrl. I agree i hate taking meds. I am on 75 mg because of fatigue and low neutrophils. After a year and ½ I switched to a different cancer center. They do things differently. Recently they added zometa to my treatment plan as a preventive. Her comment was that if my breastcancer decides to spread again bones are a common area. Taking a bone hardner before it spreads helps to prevent the pain you get with mets to the bone. It can also be used afterwards to prevent damage to the bone. It took me a while to wrap my brain around this because my dexa scan is quite good. I am doing this for 2 years every 3 months then once a year.

I understand what you’re saying about a bone strengthener but there is mixed research/opinions on whether or not they actually do provide preventive benefits. So, until my mo recommends it, I am happy to stay away from any more meds. I did three years on Aredia, an older bone strengthener.

@exbrnxgrl i hear you. I am at a large cancer hospital now. The doc said right up front that studies are inconsistent on preventing bone spread. What they have found in their studies, is it keeps the cancer from breaking bones when it does spread and reduces pain. It sounds like you may already be protected. It does this by changing the outer surface of the bone. I am not familiar with what you were on but it sounds like it does similar things.
What I found interesting is before I started, I talked to my orthopedic surgeon. I recently had a knee replaced and I didn't want to cause any issues. My good knee had started hurting this past year. The surgeon told me to get the med. It won't change my need for a knee replacement down the road because it doesn't help cartridge. The pain in the knee is from inflammation due to tiny hairline breaks in the knee from deteriorating cartridge and it often helps reduce the pain. I notice a huge change in knee pain about 2 weeks after my first infusion. My steroid shot a month earlier did nothing. This is what it does for people and also made me decide to try.

Has anyone on Ibrance had GE wall thickening?
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

not sure what GE is. I did have some thickening in a bowel wall

GE junction is the opening from the esophagus to the stomach. I have thickening there per the scans. They have ordered an endoscopy. Any ideas will be welcomed.
