Alstoemeria. They last so long in a vase.

I've seen them in so many arrangements, even some bridal bouquets. So beautiful

I try to get my flowers from my garden but in winter I end up with one or two bunches to get me through the few scarce weeks, This week my deep red Christmas amaryllis finally bloomed inside and my tulips are starting to form so no more store bought. This week its spreading a giant pile of maple wood chips on all the new beds for mulch. I got them free from a tree service but yikes. It was supposed to be two yards but I think it might be closer to 3.5. I'm doing 10 wagon loads a day so I don't hurt myself. I think the whole neighborhood is going to have wood chips this year. Three bare root roses arrived from Dave Austen yesterday too. Oh and the hummingbirds are back. yay!

Beautiful pics. Beautiful flower arrangements. I put up the garden fence to try to protect the palm trees and my Hibiscus bushes. We will see what happens. My darling retriever has plenty of interactive toys. He has another dog to play with during the day. They both hang out in the backyard. They love playing together. Wintertime in Miami is perfect weather, Ted loves being outside during the day. I play with all 7 of them in the evening. All my dogs sleep inside the house at night.

Ended up at the San Diego Botanic Gardens this weekend during a quick weekend get away. Lots of cacti and succulents in bloom. Worth a trip if you are in that area in the future!

so envious of Dreamer, when we bought our house in 2014, there was NOTHING in the backyard. I've crawled around on my hands and knees to get my little bit I have. Beautiful pics. Love the botanical gardens. I have a cutting of the last one. I it called angel horn

Immediately after the late lamented polar vortex, I ordered brussels sprout seeds, a hardy lavender plant, and strawberry plants from a well-known seed company that specializes in midwestern gardening. I also ordered broccoli seed for sprouting. They had a little warning, saying to not expect to receive your order for another two to three months. I just wanted to reassure myself that winter will end (and so will Taxol). I can get my climbing nasturtiums and bush beans later and locally.

Anybody else order seeds to ease cabin fever?

I bought bush beans, yellow crookneck squash, birdhouse gourds weeks ago. I said I would plant anymore but I guess if I can crawl, I'll plant.

it's funny. Down here we plant in September or October. We would never plant during the summer time because it's too hot. I haven't grown vegetables in years. I found growing vegetables to be too much work. I don't use any pesticides in my yard. . And picking those worms off my vegtables every night wasn't any fun. I decided it was easier to buy organic then to grow organic. Flowers we can grow here year around. During the summer certain plants can be a challenge due to the extreme heat and humidity.

We can plant almost year round here. Crops that want a lot of heat and sun are tricky. Some years they grow. All the lettuces and broccoli do well and can be planted in the fall for spring harvest. I love eggplant and only the small Japanese ones do well. DH always plants about 6-8 corn stalks and we usually get an ear or two in Sept. We don't use pesticides either. If they get eaten, oh well. As the woman here said, just plant more and plan to share.

My backyard raised bed is for salad stuff. Winter gardening is wonderful in S Texas. We summer garden in SE Alaska, so have fresh salads/veggies year round. My neighbors had never had lettuce that didn't come out of a bag and thought fresh lettuce tasted funny!

Unfortunately, we just got our first snow. No gardening for me yet.

Really really beautiful. We had snow here but not as pretty in the city.

Seeds and fat quarters for quilting are my weakness. Otherwise I don't horde anything else. Buying bulbs in the fall and seeds in the dead of winter are what makes life fun. Now I just have to be patient because we get spring teases that lull you into thinking its okay to plant. I have one orange tulip up already and cherry blossoms and then a freeze starting tonight.

Jazzy I get a lot of squats in doing weeding so for sure it’s good for you.

No signs of spring here except the seed catalog with whole pages of strawberries, corn etc.

Our annual garden show is next Wed-Sun. We usually end up going although I have problems with some of the fragrances. After a week of snow, I expect it will be mobbed. After midafternoon the prices go down so we usually go then. All the big nurseries and seed companies are there along with a host of garden related implements and decorations. They have seminars on all sorts of subjects. I haven't been to any of those - too much like work.

I am doing well with broccoli sprouts. Got a spray bottle yesterday so I can water them lightly and more frequently. That doesn't spend more than three or four calories. I think it is about time to start another tray full. I have the brussels sprouts seeds, but don't need to put them in sprouting pots for about two months yet.

Strawberries are in and started lettuce, spinach and nasturtiums seeds in the cold frame. It gets too hot in the summer for these three so I'm hoping I can enjoy some micro greens till June.

I don't know if my eating habits will wait long enough for my sprouts to turn into microgreens, that looks like a good combination. My sprouts are greening up nicely, and probably improving the house air.

teka- I still cannot imagine living in weather -12 below. It's 78 degrees here with beautiful blue skies. We are expecting some rain within the next few days and the temperature is going to drop in the low to mid-seventies. Winter has to end soon, right?

That's really nice. I can't have plants inside because my foster cat eats them. I have a list of plants poisonous to cats and it's really really long. Makes you wonder how they've done so well. Silly cat even got on the table and ate a flower arrangement (or part of it). I knew because he immediately threw it up.

My cats are plant eaters too, but before cats I loved my bakers rack with a variety of my favorites. Beautiful way to bring nature into our homes. I guess I should live in a treehouse

Have you tried growing 'cat grass'? I get the seeds at the local nursery. I think it is a combination of oat, barley etc seeds and they grow really fast. I always have a flower pot of cat grass in the RV or house; dog and cat both love it!
