Serenity - I saw someone on another forum who needed to be seen at the breast diagnostic clinic ASAP and got a letter in the mail that due to the amount of Covid ICU cases in the area, all NHS breast diagnostic clinics were shut down at that hospital for the next TWELVE weeks and her scheduled appointment was thereby cancelled. Her options were to petition her member of Parliament, try and push for referral to another hospital (which she was initially told was not possible),or pay a lot of money to go private. No one should be put in that position, but this is what a health care system with too few staff or beds looks like.

If flu hits bad this year well... guess I better find yet another new hobby and hunker down some more!

    SondraF -

    12 weeks closed! That's terrible. ☹️

So far I haven't had any appointments cancelled outright. Last year one appointment switched to telemed because my MO was in quarantine due to exposure. My appointments have just been more spaced out. I may not get a scan for a while longer.

For hobbies, I'm still doing plants and bread. I have 2 orchids with new spikes, and my sourdough starter is still alive.

I'm glad my healthcare team took vacation time this summer.

  • "I think that once you start a thread and someone responds it is no longer your thread. Otherwise why are we bothering to give input?"

I agree. That said, I'll put this one into the "be grateful for small favours" category since the thread has been locked but not deleted. There have been too many threads where I've spent a lot of time researching information and writing answers, only to have the OP decide that she isn't happy with the responses she'd received and she asks the Moderators to delete the whole thread. These are usually situations where the OP thinks her doctors are off base with their recommendations, and many of us put the effort into explaining the nature of breast cancer and the risks associated with the individual's diagnosis, and why those treatments are beneficial and potentially life saving. Or it's situations where a newbie arrives here panicked over what appears to be a very low risk situation, and convinced that she has breast cancer which almost certainly has already spread. In these cases, the OP is offended when it's factually explained to her why her situation actually appears to be low risk, and why it's quite unlikely that she is facing a breast cancer diagnosis, never mind mets. Because those of us responding "aren't taking her concerns seriously", the newbie takes her ball and leaves (i.e. deletes her membership and asks the MO to delete her threads).

So all in all, a locked thread, while frustrating, is better than a deleted thread.

I’m dismayed the thread has been shut down. What a slap in the face to those who took the time to research, formulate an articulate opinion, and defend their viewpoints. I enjoyed reading it.

And let me just say…a strongly worded opinion should not offend. We are adults.

To be fair, that other thread was initially intended to be a rant, which turned into a discussion mostly. I doubt the OP was looking to be convinced of an outcome either way. Personally, I didn’t consider much of what was said in the category of a personal attack but the tone was often unkind, rather than understanding. Anyway, I’m moving on from it but I’ll be back here next time I have something to bitch about.

Side note: The world being what it is, I wonder what Lita would say, she had some good rants.

Lita and her "shittin pants". I laughed so hard at so many of her posts. I miss her, too.

I wonder if the mods would allow me to start a thread about how the Pandemic has affected your life as a cancer patient/survivor. I certainly wouldn't be offended if others had different viewpoints or experiences. I'd also allow the mods to be in charge of moderating.

Won't know until I try, right? Wished me luck.

RubyRedSlippers--oh, how I agree with you, and I ran into this very thing today. I was scheduled for PT today (appointment appeared on MyChart) and I went. The PT was pathetic and half-assed, pointing at exercises on a printed sheet...what a waste of my time. Anyhow she wound up the "session" by saying that I "would be scheduled for twice a week" and I sat there like a dolt. As I got dressed to leave, I suddenly got my balls back and thought to myself, "No. I will NOT be "scheduled" for this shit ever again." When the next appointment appears on MyChart, I will cancel and tell them I won't be back. Dammit.

Sorry to butt in, 1st time posting in the steam room, but just want to chime in regarding that covid thread.

personally, i thought it was pretty civil. Passionated tone, sure, but civil.

Covid disscutions on other SMs like twitter can often get heated & ugly quickly.

while I appreciate mods haven't deleted the thread, I hope locking the thread hasn't sent a message that covid is a taboo topic now.

ok so this isn't the steam room type steam but it IS steamy and honestly, I feel we all need a timeline cleanse.

I think the point was that is not a COVID thread and for people to complain about other things mainly. Like stupid computers which drive me crazy. Thankfully DH was an engineer once upon a time and knows enough he was able to get me up and running today. I would be lost without it.

It's the steam room, so I am steamed that the Covid thread is locked. Except for some threads started by newbies for a specific question, I've never seen any indication on here that an OP owns the thread they start. How annoying, and it seems like a child taking their ball home when other people want to play.

I'm parking this here since I can't put it where it belongs. How can this not piss people off? Unless, of course, you think these lives were expendable.

    alice,

This is not the first time that a member/op has asked to have a thread locked or deleted. Bon, a former member who posted some excellent info for stage IV members has been completely wiped from bco at her request. It doesn’t happen often but it happens. Yes, the locked thread was passionate in terms of people’s beliefs but I didn’t think anyone was nasty beyond a difference of (passionate) opinions. Unfortunately, I think the op thought she would get more support for her position than she did so she completely deleted her op and substituted a single sentence. I guess that still didn’t achieve her desired objective so she requested the thread be locked. I am not sure she understood that the thread could go on with it without her since she asked for someone to take over at a certain point. I am of unsure why the thread couldn’t have gone on with the op simply choosing not to participate.

I started a new "replacement " thread if anyone's interested. We'll see how long it stays public.

Never posted to this thread but Mae, how I miss Lita! I wonder if she knows that, even now, just the mention of her brings a smile to my face. Her shittin pants were classic but I always remember when a bird nested in the wreath on her door. She had it cordoned off for weeks until the nestlings had flown the coop. Smile

The OP to this thread hasn't participated lately so I agree if you start a topic, you don't own it. Some go sideways, some don't. That's why you need moderation in a public forum. I love the premise and I've used this room during a difficult time in my life. I thank you for letting me share and vent when some probably thought will she ever stfu and never said so

I remember reading some of Lita's posts. I'm not Metastatic and I trained myself to nolonger read any of that section of this site. You all need your space and im so glad some of you participate here. Thank you! This is an e topic with all sorts of stuff and I'm thankful we are all still here.

    Covid be damned.

The op for this thread disappeared years ago. She got to where she thinks she owned her threads.

I knew her in real life, until she accused me and another here of cyberstalking her. The conservative thread was called Mirror. It has disappeared too. It got pretty heated, the mods split it from the liberal thread, and locked them both.

    So it happens.

I’m glad my mention of Lita brings back fond memories. She was very active when I was new here and a delightful, real, tell it like is contrast to the super positive “cancer was a gift” types. She talked real shit, lol.

Cancer is a gift! If that isn’t the most bizarre phrase I don’t know what is. I am one of those generally positive people and tend not to be snarky or sarcastic. Even with the relatively easy time I’ve had I would be very happy to return the “gift”!

Lita reached out to me after I posted that I was scared (newly dx) and had another long timer take issue with my post because of my BC grade. This long timer felt I was not entitled to post my concerns and I must say I was taken aback by her vehemence. I so appreciated Lita for reaching out and for the messages I received from her after that one. She was a kind, funny soul and I dearly miss her.

This is a club no one wants to join and if BC is a gift, I would gladly return it as well. So far it has been the gift that keeps on giving and I wish I could get off that list as well. RIP Lita, I miss you.

As for locked threads, I would even take it further. Comments here are public. I do not believe that posters should be able to delete their comments. Unless the moderators remove it as per their protocols. Once it’s out there, you own it. We have all (or a lot of us) have regretted a posting. Then apologize or admit you were wrong. But don’t tear the recipe out of the magazine. I so hate that!!

  • sadiesservant
    sadiesservant Member Posts: 1,875

    Hi HB90,

I get where you are coming from but occasionally, very occasionally, someone posts something that is truly offensive to others. I had one experience of someone complaining about the stage IV threads that she could not participate in (ironically another COVID related discussion with the individual posting nonsense from well known wackos). That was a shocker and I must admit to responding with a degree of sarcasm. I would gladly let her in if it meant we could trade and I could step out of this stage IV crap! Ha! Don’t think she would take me up in it. 😁

I was surprised as well by the OP having the ability to shut down the conversation. (I have no ill will for the OP. She raised some important issues and is entitled to her opinion as much as anyone else.) Seems odd as those that have passed clearly don’t have that option. Removing one’s own post? Not ideal but your right. Muting the voices of others? Makes me question the role of this forum. As others have noted, COVID has had a profound effect on many of us, much more than those who will carry on and think back to this anomaly in a decade.

Can we talk bucket lists folks? Or lack thereof…

Sadiesservant - I remember those posts! At one point she suggested Stage IV people provide proof. 😒

Now I only get angry that we're still in the pandemic. I've only posted about covid or thin slices of joy. That's pretty much it. Got nothing much to post about anything else.

I'm hoping we can continue to have our Covid "rant" page without it being locked down. If you're still interested, it's called " How has the Pandemic affected your life as a current or former cancer patient." Unwieldy, I know, but I'm hoping it's broad enough to keep it from offending anyone.

I remember Lita as well. Many others here have also helped me in decisions and confirmed I was not "crazy" in how I was feeling about things. Cancer is awful and I can only hope I have the wisdom and strength to help someone else in the same way.
