Katy (and whomever else might be interested): sorry about the delay in reviewing Wozzeck! We came home late last night, had a quick dinner and I promptly went splat.

At any rate, the production was interesting. Basic summary: title character, dirt poor soldier supporting his lady mistress and their love child. She has an affair (no really!) and title character, already unstable, kills her. Both the stage design (largely gray-scale) and the music (not just atonal but almost dissonant) suited that strong suggestion of mental illness. Or at least that's the impression I came away with; DH doesn't think that Berg was quite so clear cut about any of the characters' mental status. Oddly, I came away reminded of Throne of Blood--much better sleepwalking scene than any stage production of Macbeth I've seen.

    Here's a link to the Lyric's production.

My husband and I saw Lulu pretty nearly exactly seven years ago, back near the beginning of our opera-going together, and were both rather surprised when I came away babbling about the music. Part of the problem I have with the Great Canon Warhorses is that most of them leave me giggling helplessly at all the plot holes (all those sopranos singing loudly enough to fill an opera house about how they're dying of consumption?)

    Cubbie,

Thinking of you tomorrow. I'm sure the tumor board will be able to give you the guidance you need.

    Jack,

Love those bread loaves. Kneading is a real bear however. Have you tired making no knead bread. It's what I've been doing now for years. If you're interested I can give you some info. I had a great time visiting with Octo, hopefully I'll be able to more of the crazy town denizens in the future!

    Octo,

It was so great meeting you and your husband. My non social networking friends are always surprised when I get together IRL with people I have only met via avatars, I love seeing people Intalk to all the time on line for real, I'm totally up for any cyber events you want to organize! Glad you had a good visit, even though no "fancy dinner" God, that sounds so familiar!!! Also anyone coming up this way, give me a shout it and we can meet up.

    Queen,

My husband and I had season ticket to the Los Angeles Opera for years and I loved Wozzack when we saw it. The LA production was directed by Peter Sellers ( not the movie actor the opera director) and was set in West Berlin during the Cold War. I'd never been to the opera before and it just knocked me out!! The supertitles over the stage were a huge help, and my husband bought me Kobes Opera Book which contains the libretto to all the operas .. ( pre Internet. Now I'd just wiki it) it totally sold me on opera which was fortunate since we had those season tickets.

    Tom,

I'm so so sorry you had that horrible experience do young.... My god, I can't even imagine having that happen.

Though I'm so glad you made it through to be able to be here with all of us today. Hugs to you.

    Italy,

I hear ya! I have 10 people coming and four of them are gluten free and lactose intolerant! I'm the only vegan pain in the ass but since I'm cooking, I'm breaking all the rules this Thanksgiving. There will be roast beast and other assorted unmentionables. The theme here will be my tradional Italian family dinner.... Tuscan style pork loin, polenta, etc. I'm letting the gluten frees make dessert so who knows what we'll be eating. The kids want turkey... So they'll get some kind of sandwiches whatever in the afternoon for lunch.

    Chi,

I'm glad your friend is doing better. The idea of just letting her go down like that was very troubling so I'm glad she's taken such a turn for the better.

    Ducky,

I still can't wrap my head around what happened to your grandson! God!! So glad he survived that and the idea of having the presence of mind to jump on the hood of the car coming toward him!! I can't even imagine that, and the idea that a similar thing happened to your other grandson too!!! Way too many close calls!

Hello, to Shorfi, and Lucy, and Proud and LittleBlue, Rainn, Gaia, and of course SLOW ( madam mayor) I know I am forgetting people but we have spent the day packaging getting our Chaunk Box ready for the stores. We did some more recipe testing for the restaurant last night. The owners husband whipped up some gluten free eclair's which were definitely not a happy experience....soooooo this one goes back to the drawing board.

    Anyway,

I just want to get through this week in one piece... If any of you live in SF I'm supposed to be at the Rancho Gordo store in the Ferry Building on Black Friday dishing out dal and selling( I hope) Chaunk Boxes !

It always makes me smile to read this thread. It's like reading a favorite book that never ends.

I've got a lot to read. I will do that now. Missed you ALL.

Cubbie, We are all holding your hand waiting for your test results.

I don't see any appointments for anyone next week. Hopefully I didn't miss anyone and it's the result of the upcoming holiday.

BBL. Love all of you crazies!!

Queen, I always found it incongruous to watch Joan Sutherland as a consumptive Violetta--Dame Joan was NOT someone with whom you’d want to meet up in a dark alley unless you were armed. Brunhilde, yes. Violetta? Oy.

My friend Jack’s brunch was fun and delicious, as always. He made a chicken stew and put out some dips and cheesecake; and I brought charcuterie: duck breast prosciutto, jamon Serrano, and both black truffle and wild boar salamis, plus some cheeses (Bayley Hazen Blue from VT, Good Thunder Reblochon-style from MN, and Milton Creamery Prairie Breeze Cheddar from WI). We cracked the Duboeuf Beauj. Nouveau and agreed that it was typical of the style, better than in immediately prior vintages, but not the best of this year’s class. But here’s the amazing thing: fully half the women there were also breast cancer survivors! (I was the only one who didn’t get chemo or mastectomy).

    Morning Crazies!

Like Slow, I have a LOT to catch up on here. Waving at you Slow. Been working on and getting back into some flow with some projects and that feels good, like a sense of balance around daily life is emerging. A while back a few inquired about the qi gong class I'm taking - it's wonderful- more a 'transmission' style than form focused. I also took a Wu Ming Qi Gong class on movements for breast health. I intend to start offering workshops and perhaps an ongoing weekly class in January. Other than that the holidays are upon us! What does everyone have up their sleeve this week?

Ducky I know your focus is your grand daughter's wedding. I am also so sorry to hear about your 2 grandson's and those freak accidents. I hope they are both on the mend. Seems when we have big families we always have a mix of the good the bad and the wild occurring at any given moment.

Tom I can't imagine what it must have been to witness/live through such a traumatic life experience. First date, so young, him feeding you lifesavers..... ugh (((((Tom)))))

Sula have so much fun at the ferry building! I am certain you will sell a lot of your product. So great that you got to hang out with Octo. I will certainly keep you WC gals posted as to when I make my way there. Did just put 2 things on the calendar for February-so I am starting to look at trips for next year.

Rainny how are you doing with juggling going to Manhattan everyday with rads? Any good hauls from the CSA/GM this weekend? Maybe we should meet for an early nibble at Roman's for our BK meeting! Let's try to reschedule that soon.

Hugs Octo- I have to go back and fully read your last post- I saw that last page late last night. Thinking of you.

Italy good luck with making a Turkey feast and all of the parameters you have. I was a vegetarian for YEARS and whenever I went to celebrations/gatherings I made sure to contribute something. It's a lot to ask others to take responsibility for our specific dietary needs....

Hugs Katy, the bread looked yummy. No knead bread is great, but I do love the process of kneading. My great grandmother and grandmother taught me to bake and the made a weekly batch of bread, by hand that involved 10lbs of flour. Of course whole wheat is more stiff and there is nothing wrong with the dough hook. Be gentle on your pecs!

QMC love Berg I have never been to the Lyric, all the opera speak has me hankering to see a production. Sula I actually was involved in a production of the Marriage of Figaro that Peter Sellers directed.

Chi What a lot of downs and ups with your friend, bit so glad that it is not crashing down in flames. Will you still do something around Thanksgiving with her and the family?

    Hi LBF

Rose glad the troll is taking action to move on. Happy for your upcoming liberation.

Cubbie keep us posted on what unfolds in today's appointment.

Chevy where are you? waving at you.Slow hope the family 'stuff' is ok. Take care of yourself.

Ok Crazies I have to get ready to go to the Herceptin spa. I know I've missed some things... will try to thread back while I'm getting the infusion. Hugs to all.

But wanted to say good morning, and thanks Queen for the review. You do a very good job 'distilling' and I always laugh at your wry observations.

afternoon group, gee guess we all have a busy week up ahead. I was smart and checked my cupboard last night to see if I had all things to make the apple pie. Good thing I did as the brown sugar was rock hard! I know there are ways to soften it so did a few tricks but decided to run to the super place for some emergency stock, of course by the time I got home from the gym, dang but the rock hard stuff is mostly soft~~oh well

Just to start off with something approximately on-topic for CrazyTown: hurrah, I don't have lymphedema. I just have weird arms. (We didn't really think I did, but the oncologists and I wanted to make sure/get a baseline.)

Sula: just to make sure, you mean Peter SellArs? not Mr. Goon Show/Strangelove? But how interesting that you got to see his Wozzeck. Setting it in the Cold War would have been interesting--this production was, IIRC, set just after World War I.

ChiSandy:Traviata's been forever ruined for me by my husband's whispering, at the absolute height of Violetta's dying aria, "I don't want to go on the cart! I feel happy! I think I'll go for a walk!" And we did get up to the Pastoral on/in Andersonville yesterday, coming away with one in the Brie family and two in the Cheddar style. Nibbled today.

Katy: very wry indeed, but then for which see my comment to ChiSandy above.La Boheme actually does have a legitimately tear-jerker moment at the end, if done right, but then it's not the consumptive heroine who's singing at that point. And then Il Trovatore has that 'wrong baby on the fire' pivotal plot point that's about as realistic as the Pirates of Penzance bit of math finagling. Come to think of it, there's a few moments of music phrasing that might be common to both....

Ducky, How are the boys doing? It IS so weird, Like Sula said, to have both of them have such similar incidents, they must have cosmically close souls. Real soul brothers, even if they are just cousins!

Katy: Wry bread! I love it! The ones you made? I bet they didn't last long!

Chi, that is so amazing that at your luncheon that 1/2 the women were survivors!

Sula, You said "Roast Beast"!! That's what I have always called any kind of cooked meat, made me smile to hear you call it that.

Thank you to all of you that gave me virtual hugs about my young man. It wrecked me for quite a while, I went pretty crazy in my twenties, but I do think eventually it made me very compassionate for others, because we can only guess at secret sufferings. It is really hard sometimes, to have a body and a feeling heart. At least it at the very least, made me live hard and strong and really throw my body around! I lived full speed, because I knew for a fact that we could die at any time, and am glad now that I did, because I tried everything I could, and have the memories of a strong body and good times.

Okay, I started writing this like two hours ago, so I will hit post now! Hope all crazies have a great "big chicken" day!!! ( I will 'splain that later!) Buyyyyeee

I am totally in crazy town right now. My friend, who just started back bike riding, fell and broke her collar bone yesterday, and I spent the afternoon with her at emergency. My mom got hospitalized last night with a severe UTI and difficulty breathing. And my ex husband had a stroke at 59 and is in intensive care. My poor children are devastated. Too much this year for them, my cancer, and now their dad.

We need a break, somebody out there or up there, please.

    Tom,

Ha! I've always called it that! Whoa... Crazy minds like minded! Wish I'd met you when I was in LA!

    Jack,

Ooooo, the punning! Wry....why? 🙀 I was imagining you with all that dough...

    image

    Queen,

Yes! My bad! Poor spelling. We also were at a dinner party with him once, really nice guy. I told him his stuff had made an opera convert out of me. My favorite opera ever for sheer magnitude was when the Paris opera brought Les Troyens to LA. 5 hours long! 2 count em 2 intermissions. Really a "get a room" event. It was magnificent to see such an amazing piece of theatre absolutely uncut! I'll never forget it.

    Ducky,

I hope the boys are doing better and will be fully mended in time for that wedding coming up.

    Rainn,

Hope rads is going ok and the traveling isn't too hairy? Are you at MSK? That's where my sis in law went. She lives right down the block so she had an easy choice. Every visit to my MO for chemo was a 50 mile round trip.

    Slow,

    Gaia,

I hope you have a wonderful Thansgiving. Are you cooking?

    Slow,

    Cubbie,

Holding good thoughts for your tests.

Slow, Proud, Octo and everyone I know I'm forgetting. Have a great week all, I'll be dropping by between cooking and packing boxes

Sula: my husband and I both say "0-0. whimper you got to attend a dinner party with Peter Sellars?"

(or why I'm glad I found the more freewheeling boards here--there was a life before this, there will be a life after this, there is at all times a life outside and/or without this. We will live. We will love. We will enjoy life.)

Octo, what a splendid and loving story about your dad. And how great that you and Sula got to hang out.

Italy, hugs. You need a break! Hope Thanksgiving provides, if nothing else, a distraction. And your mom and ex are okay. Are they at least in the same hospital?

    ChiSandy, did you finish rads?

QMC, thanks for the review of Wozzek! Sounds like a good production! I have never seen it or Lulu.

Sula, I think the longest opera I've ever seen is probably Die Meistersinger or Tannhauser. Definitely two-intermission productions. I'd decided I needed to get some Wagner under my belt, anti-semitism or no, and ended up being blown away by both.

Radiation: 6 down, 19 to go. So far so good, though it's still early days. The commute is an hour and 15 minutes door to door on the subway. At least there is free caffeine. The temperature has fallen quite a bit in the last few days, and I've been dressing in layers. Today, dear crazies, while changing for rads, I learned a valuable lesson: wigs and turtleneck sweaters don't mix!

Hope everyone will have loved ones around for the holiday!

Sula, yes, MSK. It is a great hospital and I'm lucky. They have an infusion center near my home in Brooklyn where I got chemo and now Herceptin. But medical consults, scans, and rads are all at the various Manhattan locations.

Blondie, this can be your crazy town too! Lots of great women here! I have to watch Perry Mason too, it's on an like 11:30 at night so I stay up to watch! My man put that theme song as his ring tone, he likes it so much!

Queenie, there is a certain suspension of disbelief in opera, isn't there? I always got a chuckle out of the observation that the characters repeat themselves so much. I imagined the other characters singing "Yes, yes, what happened? Get to the point!" Glad the lymphedema check came out fine. My hospital does baselines even before you have surgery, which is really nice. You know exactly where you started from.

Hi, Gaia! Sounds like you are enjoying your Qi Gong class. I'll have to look into Qi Gong sometime, I don't know much about.

Iris, I've had the rock hard brown sugar before too.

Tomboy, I'll be looking or that "big chicken" explanation - there must be a story there.

Rainny, they have free caffeine at your RO, too? When I had the consult with the RO, I was surprised that they offered coffee, cola, etc. I was shocked, almost as shocked as if they had offered bacon. I mean, aren't caffeinated drinks bad for you?

All I know about Perry Mason is people joking that he never solved a case, because somebody always confessed instead.

((Italychick)) Your poor kids (and you) need a break, that's for sure. Their Dad and their Grandma are in the hospital at the same time? Maybe once they get your Mom's UTI under control, her breathing will improve. UTI's can really stress an older person's system.

No call from the university today, so it looks like I will be waiting some more tomorrow. Thanks, everyone, for waiting with me.

DONE with radiation! (Alas, no bell to ring--only the chemo suite has one). No fatigue, no skin irritation. Just some redness/tanning, enlarged breast seroma (though the axillary one has shrunk), and nipple sensitivity. Was even able to wear underwire bras and use antiperspirant throughout! RO says redness will start to fade in about 10 days but I should expect to have Super-Boob for at least a year. (So no putting away my I & J cup bras just yet). They pulled off the stickers, and along with them came the Sharpie marks. So X no longer marks the spot(s).

Caffeine--specifically, in the form of good coffee--is the elixir of life! (If you’re interested, my second most popular song--second only to “Because We Can,” about which Dr. Demento fans still track me down--is “Caffeine,” recorded solo by my singing partner Stephen Lee Rich, by my former duo SASS!, and by my current duo Andina & Rich, on our CD Two Guitars, a Dulcimer and an Attitude. It’s the song of mine that’s gotten the most airplay by far (now that Dr. Demento is off the air).

The only negatives about coffee are that it can be diuretic (so match it ounce for ounce with some noncaff fluid), can leach calcium if you drink it to excess (so have a latte every now & then), can be acidic whether caff or decaf (so careful if you have untreated GERD), and can interfere with sleep if consumed too late in the day (for me, after 8pm--but then, I’m somewhere between “night owl” and “vampire”). However, here are some pluses: cardioprotective (if you don’t have arrhythmia or uncontrolled hypertension), protects against both diabetes and Alzheimer’s, also has been shown to protect against some cancers (for bc, it’s neutral), and is a potent bronchodilator. If you have asthma and can’t get to a functioning inhaler, a cup of strong black coffee will tide you over. True story: 30 yrs. ago I had a horrible asthma attack at a Lake Geneva, WI resort (had a bad cold, had taken a Xanax for sleep, and it was hay fever season). DH had concierge call 911, but EMS said we could get to the hospital faster than waiting for the ambulance to pick me up and take me there. As I hadn’t been diagnosed yet and therefore had no inhaler, EMS told DH to have me sip black coffee in the car en route--and it worked. I did get a neb tx in the ER, but the coffee helped a lot. Also, it helps mitigate highway hypnosis until you can safely pull over somewhere and power-nap. (And again, it sorta jump-started my songwriting career). Besides, if you get freshly roasted great beans, and have a good grinder, nothing beats a cup brewed by slow-drip manual pourover! (The process is sorta Zen).

Those of you who grew up in & around NYC in the ‘50s-‘60s: guess what I found today at, of all places, Whole Foods? Fox’s U-Bet! Apparently, since it has invert sugar instead of corn syrup, it passes muster for them; and now that it’s changed its cacao supplier it’s now “fair trade.” Gonna pass up that last 1/2 gl. of Beaujolais Nouveau and instead make myself an old-school egg cream as a nightcap. (Non-NYers have no idea what I’m talking about--eggs? cream? Neither).

Blondie, welcome! Here is a Vermont sunset for you (from a camping trip last summer):

    image

Cubbie, they have free coffee and tea in all the drs' offices, the chemo suites, and the rads suites. Also saltines and hot chocolate. I think it's partly that these offices run late, as well as the fact that I often see people show up with not just a single partner, friend, etc. but with enormous entourages. Anyway, it's a small, happy spark in the middle of a place where no one wants to be. As for free bacon, I'm working on it. Maybe I can get the free insurance to cover it. I hope you hear some news today following last week's consultation.

Sula, whenever I've been west, I've been struck by the beauty and spaciousness of the horizon. We New Yorkers are sometimes just a little insular:

    image

And a happy Tuesday to all!

Cubbie: I think that because I had straight DCIS, the hospital wasn't as fussed about it. Still might've been nice to do a baseline check BEFORE that initial surgery, given the percentage of people who get a changed diagnosis after surgery. The crazymaking part is that my 'affected' arm (it isn't) actually did fall just over the line into possible lymphedema according to measurements (5.27% larger than unaffected) but BCBS fusses about the L-DEXA test. So i went private-pay for that, and my score there was -3.7. It's worth the $150 to NOT have to bleep around with treatment.

ChiSandy: we'll cheer for you, in lieu of that piffling bell. Totally with you on the 'suspension of disbelief' in regards opera plots. As for egg creams, I first learned about them in Harriet the Spy. Figured out from context that it's one of those sweet drinks that kids adore, but I didn't find out for a couple of decades what exactly it was.

hey there all, had good morn at gym but as normal, now I would be just fine with a nap~~

Italy, oh my what a week you have had, cannot imagine what you are going through,

Tomboy, love the Big Chicken day! I need to remember that

Rainnyc, good for you on the countdown, I used to mark off the days on my desk calendar and the end does come

Sandy, yeah for ending your rads. Gee never knew that with coffee for an asthma attack, got to remember that one as I am guilty of not remembering to always carry my rescue inhaler and I have gotten asthma attacks for the weird is things, like keep that foaming bath cleaner away from me!

bad night last night, I bought a lovely hand blown candle holder from a artist in Or and was planning on giving it to my sister, I was totally stocked to have actually found something cool for her....she shipped it and I got it yesterday but unfortunately it was broken. So contacted her and she is going to replace it. But she asked me to send her a photo of the damage so she could file the insurance claim. Ok not a big deal huh? well I took the pics but in the process of doing so I dropped it on the floor and it is now in about 8 pieces. Yikes and of course cut my finger cleaning up the class. Am I a mess? yeap!

countdown to the big chicken day!
