Rainy...........OH NO>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>any day is a bad day without water, but the day before Thanksgiving..........that is the biggest "meal day" of the entire year.................and just thinking of how many times you wash our hands is bad enough, let alone how much you use to cook with..........I sure hope it ;comes back soon........................

oh rainy, that is awful, never really under stand (well I do know why) but dang if NYC and parts of Jersey have so many water main breaks, your had your share. Maybe I should make you a pie so you have one thing done for...

Ducky- I'm glad your spa visit cheered you up a bit. I hope the rest of the day gets even better!

Rainny- oh no! Could there be worse timing? Hope they get that fixed and soon!

I am bracing for the next couple of days. Thinking I may have over programmed and now wondering if I should scale back. No energy. Kind of have that frozen feeling. Like a deer in the headlights. Hope I don't cause any accidents

Well, sauce is cooking, and dough for the rolls is rising. I cleaned out the KitchenAid with a damp paper towel so it's ready for the cranberry bread. Sink is full of dishes. I'm guessing that the guys who are renovating the park down the street inadvertently did something to the water pipes. Plan to go out soon and ask. In the nicest possible way, of course!

Proud, I think it's just that the infrastructure is really old. It's true in your part of the world, too.

    Supper may be takeout... :)

Katy, scale back if you need to and take care of yourself!

I only have one guest Thursday and 3 on Saturday. They will all help with everything. I'm just being a whack job. (What's new?)I was going to try to get a tree and have everyone do some decorating, since it's hard to do that by myself, but I just talked to my friend and she helped convince me to nix that. I'll just ask for help getting the stuff down from the attic and we'll decorate another day. What was I thinking?

Breaking down the sequence of tasks into manageable segments makes sense--Thanksgiving, however small, AND decorating a tree all at a whack would be too much for me!

Thanks Queen. I started just such a list.

    1) take clonazepam- check

    2) start cranberry sauce (easy things first until the drugs kick in) check

    3) take butter. Lots of butter. Out of the fridge and contemplate how to get it to room temp when it's freezing in the house and I hate to turn on the heat. Check

    That's how far I've gotten.

Dear over scheduled Katy, maybe start the cranberry sauce on the stove and put the butter very nearby on the counter?

Water back on. Whew. Here is what I am thinking: six months ago I was newly diagnosed and fairly sure I wouldn't live 'til Thanksgiving. (No, it wasn't especially rational, but nonetheless it was in my head.) So I am enormously thankful to be here, freaking out about the water main break, with lasagna noodles boiling on the stove, cranberry bread in the oven, dough to be shaped into rolls, and even the laundry that needs to be put into the dryer. Happy. Happy. Thanksgiving, eh? And L'Chaim!

so sorry rain, but I had to smile because that reminds me of a classic family TG story (from my family, natch): I've mentioned I have three sisters....we often rotated Thanksgiving dinner among us in past years....but my one sis would NEVER host....I mean NEVER....she has a nice house, a very nice garden, and she lives in a lovely area with good weather that is close to most of us and is somewhere anyone would want to visit...(by the ocean and all of that...). AND she is a good cook. But anyway, every year in September or so she'd call one of us and say, 'so, are you hosting this year...I will bring the appetizers!' (Katy, I love you dearly, but I will admit there is a lesson in there somewhere).

Until the year we all put our foot down and insisted it was her turn. Ok, so we all show up (maybe 15 or 20 people, I don't have a small family). And all is going well, we are all pitching in to make sure she doesn't regret hosting. UNTIL...her sink broke!!!! I mean completely unusable: it is so many years now, I can't remember any details (how does a sink break, anyway? Ok, so maybe some of us were suspicious...), but bottom line: we couldn't use the kitchen sink and her hubby had to turn off the water to the kitchen....and of course, try finding a plumber on Thanksgiving Day!

But the show must go on, so we made do: it was a nice California day so we filled up pots from the hose in the back yard...and dishes were done in the bathroom sink....while sis swore she'd never host again and the rest of us couldn't stop laughing in between spinning our conspiracy theories! :-) (and she more or less kept the promise never to host: there has been only one time since then...and that was only because yours truly did most of the cooking... :-))

Ahh families, the silly things that make us laugh!

On a more serious note or two:

take care of yourself Ducky! I hope the wedding goes well with no mishaps.....

Katy, in all seriousness, I hear you about over-extending. I do it too, though I managed to avoid it this year. Take care of yourself...

So, following up on my story of the broken sink: the past few years I've become the default host for Thanksgiving and other family get togethers, because I have the biggest house, ever since hubby and I sold our small house in San Francisco and moved to the hinterlands where we could afford anything pretty much since we sold in SF, so we bought a very nice house that was perhaps bigger than we needed... (and why the heck did we leave SF anyway...well, you all know the answer to that one: because we are crazy!!...but I digress...).

But this year I just couldn't do it. I've had as many as 34 or so for Thanksgiving, but two weeks PFC is just too soon. and somehow no one else seemed to want to take up the slack, so no big family get together. That's ok, though: hubby and I have just bought a new car, and just road tested it in the best possible way: we made record time heading down the 99 to the San Fernando Valley, where it is a beautiful cool day and where I will spend the holiday with my daughter, SIL, my 7 year old GD, and 3 year old GS. DD will do most of the cooking (although World's Most Adorable Granddaughter and I will help. ok, our family isn't as gender traditional as that sounds, but when it comes to cooking, it seems to be a girl's sport in my family...) and when we aren't cooking hubby and I will hang with the kids. A romp in the park might be in order if the sun stays out. And we will probably indulge in their traditional Black Friday activity (which actually was a tradition for me as well in childhood since my grandparents lived in the Los Feliz nabe): a walk in Griffith Park and a visit to the Griffith Observatory. GD loves it there, and so much better for her psyche and mine than the mall!

Thinking about my grandchildren reminds me: it was a truly sucky, sucky year. There is no other way to say it. But there is still much to be thankful for: the grandkids always top that list...but my dear crazies, you are all very close to the top as well. I don't know what I would have done without you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Sending love.

    April, mazel tov!

Octo, I have only one Turkey-Day horror story: five years ago, it was our turn among our friends to host TG dinner. I had spent a fortune on one of those Williams-Sonoma “Willie Bird” heritage-breed free-range organic turkeys and had everything ready to go--including two kinds of stuffing & homemade cranberry relishes. Stuffed the bird with apple, onion and potato; slipped butter and fresh herbs under the skin and put it into the oven. A 22-year old bottom-of-the-line GE gas oven. Well, the timer dinged--leg still not up to temp. Everyone was grumbling and beginning to dig in to the side dishes (soup & salad were already history). After another 30 min., with the legs & thighs still blood-rare, I carved them off and nuked them. But by then the breast was like styrofoam. Thank G-d for gravy. Six months later I got a new pro-style range with two ovens that accurately hold their temperature.....but I have been forbidden to host TG dinner. The next year we went to the 95th floor of the Hancock Tower: great view, fantastic buffet, trad. turkey entree with all the trimmings and even a box of leftovers for each guest. Year after that, though, they couldn’t accommodate a party of our size, so we chose a simpler comfort-food joint in the neighborhood and since then we’ve all taken turns footing the bill. This year, my friend’s husband & son are doing the honors--and insist on it because they want and need some “normal” in their lives. My friend was admitted to the assisted living wing of The Clare downtown, with the “home hospice” protocol. She & her family (including her two terriers--the shepherd passed away last month at 15) will have Thanksgiving lunch first.

Yesterday, our insurance agent came over to crunch numbers for Medicare Part D plans--we chose Humana Enhanced for me because it has the best combination of affordable premium and large and deep formulary. (Another reason to skip those osteoporosis drugs for now: they’re so expensive they’d push me into the donut hole too soon). Today I took my Outback in to the dealership for its 15,000-mi. well-baby checkup and snow tires--and the dealer talked me out of getting the tires (they do sell them). Settled in with my Kindle, CNN in the background, the free latte machine and a fresh sesame bagel & schmear. (Can you guess it’s in Skokie)? Service mgr. comes in 2 hrs. later and says everything went great, she’s in great shape and he’ll see me in another 15K miles. I go to the cashier, who asks me “Cash or check?”

WTF??? I haven’t carried a checkbook in two years--I have a wallet full of credit & debit cards. I asked why I couldn’t use a credit or debit card, and the cashier, frazzled, replied “Because our computer keeps disconnecting us from our credit card portal.” I looked around and noticed people grumbling that they couldn’t get past the place’s firewall on their own laptops. I asked if they could pile us all into their courtesy shuttle van and ferry us to the nearest ATM--but they said that wouldn’t be necessary....they hoped. Eventually, they gave up and just wrote down people’s card numbers. Drove to Costco and en route started wheezing from the petroleum-distillate leather polish they used on the interior, so had to open the windows in 40-degree weather. But glory be--Costco had regular unleaded for $1.87/gal--cheapest I’d seen since last Jan. I figure I saved enough on this half-tank to buy another asthma inhaler when I get to Rome....and won’t need to fill up again till Christmas. And on the way home, the dealership called to reassure me the system was back up and my credit card went through. Whew!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my lovely crazies.

My TG story happened my sophomore year in college as dorm president. Volunteered to cook turkey. Ended up preparing 3 birds starting out in the dorm oven, whose door had to be propped shut with a broom handle and even then couldn't maintain a constant temperature. For fear of giving all food poisoning I called Mom to pick me and the birds up, luckily only lived 15 miles away. So had helping hands with experience and a double oven and an electric carving knife. so dinner rescued. Back to the dorm in a timely manner where the rest came together and meal enjoyed by all.

Oh crazies, I'm so very far behind. I'm so sorry.

I've had a very long week and it's only Wednesday!!

My DD got married yesterday. Yes, this was a complete surprise. She has talked about eloping but I didn't think she was serious. hahaha.....That's my girl. She likes to keep us all guessing. I'm thinking she may get her crazy from her mom.Loopy It's totally something I would have done in her shoes.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the wonderful crazies!! I'm so thankful for all of you!!

    Love to all!!

Rainny, good news that your water is back on. Figures it would break on the biggest cooking day of the year. That's almost as bad as the time my main sewer line clogged up on Christmas. It was like the old days on the farm - you gotta go? There's a bucket on the back porch!

I totally relate to being thankful to be here. Today I went into our costume room, and while good naturely grumbling about all the stuff that wasn't put back where it belongs after the play, I thought about how lucky I was to be here, sorting out costumes into the right spaces and putting props back in their boxes.

Iris, sounds like your nephew is quite the cook, like my nephew. They're about the same age, too.

Katy, I'm tempted to try to get the holiday decorating out of the way too (I don't decorate at my house, but have to do my mother's house for her). I just want to get it over with, but we probably need to pace ourselves.

Octo, you guys are planning a trip to the Griffin Observatory? Totally cool!

Sandy, I had a GE oven like that years ago. It held a constant temp, but it was always 25 degrees below what the thermostat was set for. You always had to remember to compensate for it. I'm glad to hear your friend is out the hospital and can spend the holiday in assisted living instead, which I'm sure is much more pleasant.

Rosesrx, mom to the rescue! Good thing she had a double oven.

Thanksgiving dinner seems to be proceeding without my involvement, other than a few tips over the phone. I feel sort of weird about not cooking, but I've had so much to handle with second opinions, research, working, hitting the gym every night, and waking up early in the morning and not being able to get back to sleep, my brain is just fried. I came home tonight and was so exhausted I gave up and took a nap - or tried to. The hospital called with a billing question at 7:00PM. Who in the dickens is working on accounting issues at 7:00PM on the night before Thanksgiving??? Went back to sleep, then my phone rang again, this time family with questions about Thanksgiving plans. I've gotten more calls tonight than I normally do at home in a week. So much for my nap.

Saw my local RO today and talked to the university again, and I will be getting one more opinion next week from an RO at the university. Then we should finally have a treatment plan in place.

    Beppy, surprise congrats!

    morning group,

parked on the sofa watching the Macy Day parade, I got to be a handler one year when I was a part timer there during college so always do like to watch it.

Goodness, I do not have any really amazing stories of TDay to tell that is anywhere near your stories. Although I have been muddling about how I will get across the street carrying the pie without falling on my noodle~~

Sandy, golly, I would surely have been like you with no cash or check in hand but good that they got the machine to work again. Interesting as I have been places where they also wanted cash and I am very much a cash less person

Octo, sink break? holy moly, but it sure is a reason not to go there again

Cubbie, when my nephews were growing up and would end up in the kitchen looking for something to eat, my sister used to say, make it yourself~~so since then they have graduated from tuna salad and EggMcBen sandwiches (the egg sandwich was their version of the McD sandwich only bigger). Amazing as both boys are still tall and thin but cooking is a pull for getting girls!

Slow, congrats on the wedding and eloping sounds cool to me

Tomboy, wow, working at the park sounds very fun.

so no amazing stories here, enjoy all the food today and try try not to over eat!

    Good Morning Crazies!!

No cooking for me today. We are going to our nephews down the street. My DH is making his Italian Love cake to share for dessert.

I know I have much to catch up on but Tomboy, I just read your story about your accident as a young girl. ((((((Tomboy))))
When things like that happen to us in life we can go in two different directions. We can get really bitter about life, or an experience like that can make us appreciate all things...big or small. Knowing you, the latter is true!! It's no wonder you have so much compassion for others. Love you dear friend.

Ducky, My goodness you're going through A LOT at one time. I think we are all going to just give you one big hug!!! Imagine all your sisters gathered around you in one big squeeze!!

    Lucy, HI!

Cubbie, One you have that plan in place it gets so much easier. Keeping you in my thoughts!!

Gaia, Good to see you. My DD has no patience for the expectations of others. I love that girl and I'm glad she did what made the two of them happy. It is THEIR day after-all. :)

Katy, I'm sure your gathering will be wonderful. Your guests get the pleasure of your company and in my eyes that is the very best gift they can receive. Slow deep breaths!!

Iris, I love the parade. I'm glad they show it often throughout the day.

Sula, I know you're cooking away right now. I LOVE your kit!! Let me know when it's available for purchase. I have no doubt it will be a success!!

    Rose, Great Thanksgiving story!! haha

Octo, I love your story too!! I think we all have that "broken sink" relative in our lives. Spending time with the grands sounds like a perfect day!! I'm so glad you're not hosting this year.

Rain, ((((((hugs))))).....you've handled the water going off so well!! haha I would have been a complete wreck!!

To the crazies I didn't mention, love you all and hope your day is wonderful.

I hope you all post pictures of your food! I will take a picture of the food at my nephews. His wife is an excellent cook and I can't wait to see what she has made.

I told this Thanksgiving story on a few of the threads in years past. My Mother had an injured fingernail that was always discolored. She was very self conscious about it and always wore a band-aid to cover it up. One year we sat down to dinner and she realized the band-aid was missing. Of course the great mystery was what dish it had fallen into. It ended up in the stuffing. She also made band-aid meatballs once. I'm sure that's why I'm so anal about my kitchen. I always use plastic gloves for anything that requires hand mixing. My mom kept us laughing that's for sure.

Hugs to all....quiet crazies too. I'm so thankful for all of you!!

Also very grateful for the mods here on BCO. Hope you all have a great day today. Thanks for all you do for us!! :)
