Rainny: lemon and butter faux hollandaise sounds a grand thing to put on asparagus. Won't say boo about the salt either! as dishes go, I expect that overall it's not gonna be particularly high in sodium!

Octogirl/Mommy: fine, now I'm craving a lemon/lemon float--got spoiled by the Bonny Doon's restaurants when I lived in South Bend.

    LizLori: welcome (back).

Had an anti-crazymaking visit with MO today; just shrugged and said "You're doing fine. See you in three months. That's scar tissue in your breast]"

Molly, the onc says that a year is better for Herceptin, but if I have to stop she feels that I've had a good run and should get good benefits... hate the idea of taking a break, as that just prolongs the length of treatment, we'll see what happens with this round and neuropathy...AND the Tamoxifen...

Octogirl, that post made me drool. No, not the wetlands, the float!

Called the plumber this morning. They were busy and referred me to another plumber. Who can't come until tomorrow morning. Crazy.

For those concerned about sodium, bear in mind that adding salt when seasoning food is far less a culprit than the sodium already in the foods we purchase, prepared or otherwise. Sodium (and sugar--another problem entirely) hidden in commercially-available foods (even raw meats) is a far bigger problem--whether as salt itself or in preservatives, texturizers, other flavorings, or injected in solution into meat to increase its volume (in which case youโ€™re paying in part for saltwater). This morning I watched โ€œThe Chew." Mario Batali was seasoning a chicken's worth of parts prior to cooking it, and audience members gasped when he โ€œmade it rain" kosher salt all over the meat. But only about 1/4 tsp. of salt actually adhered to the meat itself--and that was for a whole chicken intended for 3-6 people.

And the only reasons to make faux Hollandaise (i.e., eliminating the egg yolks) are first to avoid wasting a bunch of eggs or having to store a lot of egg white for later cooking, and second, to avoid having to use a double boiler (or even just a bowl over a pot of simmering water) to keep the eggs from scrambling. Don't fear the egg yolks (unless dealing with them is a PITA): consuming cholesterol doesn't raise serum cholesterol.

Lemon + butter is a beurre blanc, a different animal from Hollandaise but tasty nonetheless. Adding capers (or substituting a caper-infused sea salt for finishing) might give it an extra zing. (I wouldn't put capers in Hollandaise, but I would use cayenne or a very few drops of Tabasco or other plain pepper sauce).

Sandy, agree completely about the salt. I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek.

As for the reason not to go ahead and make the real Hollandaise (which I would normally do to celebrate the first asparagus of the season), I don't have a kitchen sink tonight due to plumber not coming 'til tomorrow. So.... steamed asparagus. Baked potatoes (nothing to wash as I'll just put them on the oven rack). Sliced flank steak on parchment paper under the broiler for just a minute or two, some sort of seasoning. And probably a combo of melted butter (tiny cast-iron skillet that I can wipe out), a bit of olive oil, salt, pepper all whisked together with lemon juice. Because I am not washing the food processor in the shallow bathroom sink!

A delightful evening to all crazies....

I use the microwave and a BPA-free steamer to โ€œblanchโ€ veggies before finishing them in a skillet or on a grill. 30 sec-1 min. does it. Sugar-snap peas, quartered Brussels sprouts and asparagus usually get 30 sec.; broccoli, broccolette/broccolini/rapini, cauliflower and whole Brussels sprouts get a minute. I also use parchment paper to cook fish & veggies--especially oily ones like salmon, mackerel, mahi mahi, branzino and bluefish (when I can get it--tough to find in the Midwest). I brush the fish with olive oil, sprinkle with salt & pepper, layer fresh herbs (basil & tarragon, especially), bell peppers & tomatoes on top, and put it in a parchment packet (fold a piece, cut out half a heart shape and unfold--then crimp the edges) with a couple of slits cut into the top, then place the packet on a paper plate. 1-2 min. on high is all it takes--nothing to wash up afterward except your utensils.

And I use my toaster oven (an 8-yr-old Krups with convection) far more often than I do my regular oven, since I rarely do any baking any more. Less mess. If it isnโ€™t raining, snowing or very cold, I go outside and use the gas grill (natural gas).

I envy you with the oily fish! After nearly 20 years of marriage, I have gotten DH to eat plain white fillet of some sort. It's gonna be another 20 before I get him to the point of eating bluefish and salmon. Though he'll do shellfish once in a while. But no more than once a week for seafood is my recipe for peace on the home front. He grew up on the great plains, where the only fish came in a box labeled Mrs. Paul's.

Anyway, dinner's sorted. I will be quite cranky if the plumber is not here on the dot of 9 AM.

Ah, yes. I used to have a bandmate who claimed to have been โ€œallergicโ€ to fish (though she ate Thai food--laced with fish sauce--with impunity and once spat out a completely vegan dim sum because she said it โ€œtastedโ€ like fish so "the caterer must have been lying"). I never could get her to understand the difference between an intolerance or aversion vs. an allergy--the latter being a possibly life-threatening immune-mediated reaction with symptoms other than just โ€œmy body wants to get rid of it.โ€ But because I donโ€™t want to possibly endanger anyone, I donโ€™t serve fish to someone who claims to be โ€œallergicโ€ even if that claim is based on junk science or even total bullshit. At least she ate green veggies--her then-boyfriend (now husband) is a Midwest-bred Swede who will eat only โ€œdeads & breads,โ€ i.e., red meat and starch. Itโ€™s a wonder heโ€™s not diabetic and hasnโ€™t had heart symptoms (though he did develop gout).

    Today is โ€œPie Dayโ€ (3/14=3.14...). Must...be...strong...stay...away...from...Hoosier Mama and Bakerโ€™s Square.... (Maybe Iโ€™ll toast up a cauliflower-crust mini-pizza instead).

After a weekend of rain & mild temps, a couple of patches of chives and oregano appear to have eluded the rabbits and are coming back up. (Ditto the snowdrops, tulips and hens-and-chicks). Time to call the landscapers to re-up the contract for the year. The basil and rosemary we dug up and potted over the winter are a bit scraggly, so I will get some new ones (plus Italian parsley, tarragon and spearmint---never did have any luck with dill). I think Iโ€™ll grown my tomatoes in containers, so will see if the gardeners can get some heirloom ribbed zucchini seeds or plants (so much tastier than the smooth kind), as well as give peppers another try. Canโ€™t wait for the farmersโ€™ markets to start up again in June!

Proud, we are very rainy today! I'm with you on the veggies. I really did want green beans--but they looked sad and withered, and the asparagus looked terrific and tasted even better! That first taste of spring foods is splendid! Even if they did come from who knows where. Enjoy the manicure!

It feels like it's been a million years since I've said hello to all.

I have been in the lurking camp the last few months, but think of this beautiful big tent of crazy town all the time.

Please know how much I cherish this place. Many of you here get me through some rough patches, whether directly or indirectly.

Hello to the many if you who have moved in since I've been away.

I hope I'll gather some mental energy soon to be more present.

In the meantime I wish each of you the highest healing thoughts.

It's so nice to meet you Gaia. Hugs to you, Slow. I was hoping your DH was keeping you busy in other ways. We are preparing to have a mini family only birthday party for DGS this Saturday. I ordered a bounce house and DD ordered cake. We are having pepperoni pizza too. No big party this year since money and time is tight.

Gaia/Gogo! We all missed you so much! Welcome back! Sending love and gentle hugs..

Molly, we are Grandma twins, of sort, my DGD's party is Saturday in a local park near them....looks like the sun will be out by then. 11 kids. not too bad but yeah, right about now she is probably wishing she kept it to family only. There was a point at which she contemplated canceling it because no one had rsvpd! Turns out people were just late to reply, but it was stressful and she was dreading the idea of telling DGD that no one was going to make it. How old will DGS be?

Anyway, I am excited for DGD's party (I have been to them all :-)) and excited to be spending the week in SoCal! Sunshine! Grandkids! Good restaurants! I can even find a place that serves sushi! :-)) (and DGD LOVES sushi!) and super, super excited to be meeting many of you in person soon! Don't forget, crazies, the get together is Saturday March 26th, brunch in Riverside. If you aren't on the email list for it and want to come, PM me! If you are on the list look for another email soon, probably later today. and, if you are interested in being Skyped in briefly.....PM me!.

    Will check in later.

    Ducky, thinking of you today.

    Hugs to all!

octogirl, DGS is turning 4 on the 23rd. Besides being my first and only grandchild he was due on my birthday. Unfortunately they decided to induce a week early due to low amniotic fluid. I am very excited about the get together.

Duckyb, thinking about you and missing you. Praying for all of you crazies.

    Welcome back, Gaia!

And mazel tov on the clear scan and getting that port out, M0mmy!

Gathering up the mental energy to go vote--sorta raw out, so the walk to the polling place might not be easy but parking is almost as tough. But gotta do it (we have several local races where every vote is crucial)--if I stay home, I have no right to complain about the result.
