We had some snow and I decided to take an evening walk to buy myself a small treat at a fast food place. Some cinnamon donuts, ate them and it was a good walk to and from the restaurant. Enjoyable, took about 60 to 70 minutes.

I had friends visiting this week from out of state so I got in lots of long Beach walks and a couple of mornings of paddle boarding.

Just popping in to say hi. I haven't posted much... I am not exactly "active" these days but I am happy to report that my breathing issues finally seem to be gettign better, so hopefully I will be back out there with you soon. In the meantime. I check in every once in while to get inspired by what you all are doing!

Andi, good to hear from you, we seem to have slowed down a bit. I have been doing more indoor work with Leslie Sansone videos. They certain do take a lot and I can usually can finish 10 mins at a time but more demanding than the treadmill. I am glad your breathing issues are improving.

Hello friends, just checking in with everyone!

I've been doing ok except I developed pneumonitis, almost certainly related to radiation to my lung met in Dec/Jan. It caused a bit of a shortness of breath & also resulted in me starting high dose oral steroids. The steroids have given me an big energy boost so I've been working out! Never let steroid boost go to waste! Zumba M/W/F, yoga T/R, daily walks 2x30 min. My Zumba playlist is now almost 55 minutes which I'm happy with. I started in January with ONE 3 minute song & built up!

I'm tapering my steroids now so it's possible I'll hit a wall of fatigue (& also pain, I guess. The steroids have really been keeping my joint pain down) but hopefully I can keep up this activity level.

Weather is improving - it's 10C here today & sunny. I don't always appreciate that as the parks and streets get full & I prefer to have them to myself so I'm looking forward to the rain in the forecast.

hugs everyone, hope you're all feeling well in body & spirit

I have been doing better again with my walking, the past couple of days I managed 10000 in 3 walks per day. Weather here is starting to cooperate, melted snow, was almost 20 celsius yesterday, did my first T shirt walking. I still weigh more than I should but going to put my obsession on the sidelines. I will continue to measure portions to keep them in line. Even with all the walking, my stamina and fatigue are hard to deal with. I have a small apartment I did a deep clean on which took all of half an hour but am so tired out now which is frustrating to me. I did take today off due to fatigue and will resume my walks tomorrow. Once I am reliable for at least 5 days of walking per week, I will worry about strength training, one thing at a time.

moth, you put a lot of energy in here, I like that 👍 from 3 minutes to 55 is a success, bravo 👏🏻

Long time ago I had an aerobic trainer, her classes were very joyful and hard to follow her steps at first but once you learned how to float you would have enjoyed a lot. I never seen any of those movements anywhere since then, as she used to say she learned/ studied aerobic in France developed the movements on her own way but followed her instructor advice. Id really like to find something like that. Her class included 3 sessions per week: aerobic, aerobic-steps and aerobic-slide, and then weight and stretching at the end of each session. I loved aerobic combo (advance level) combination of 5 or 6 movements together and switch legs, fantastic!

thanks again for the article you posted on bone thread, it is exactly what I need to talk with my MO about!

I had to take a break from walking, and because I had nothing to share, I didn't post in here. now I am on board again! Started walking slowly but hopefully able to hit the goal soon! Interesting how quickly muscles deshape after a short break!

Hi Mara, great to see you approach your walking goal, wonderful 👏🏻

More productive day here. Have already been on 4 separate 1/2 hour walks. Two around the neighbourhood and two were to and from the burger joint. 13000 steps so far which makes me happy. Mentally feel better than yesterday as well. Not sure what else I may do today, if the mood to walk strikes me I will or not since it has been 2 hours already.

Snowdrop, glad to hear that you are walking and yes, muscles can get out of shape very quickly. Annoying that happens for sure.

Yay mara! You're so inspiring with all the walking!

muscles atrophy so so so fast, it's ridiculous! Even a few days bedbound can cause them to start srhivelling up.

BUT on the plus side, they do rebound fast as well so every baby step forward is good!

I've been having a few more leg cramps at night so adding more magnesium and trying to fit in an espsom salt bath in the evening. I think it's the letrozole maybe? Oh well, whatever, hope it settles a bit.

Moth, hoping the magnesium and epsom salts help with the night time cramps, those are definitely the worst. You inspire me with all you do on an harder drug than the one I take. Good we can help each other. I will keep posting on the days I walk, I try to keep each walk to half an hour and will aim for 3 to 4 walks on my walking days. Helped that my first one was just before 7am and that it is beautiful and sunny.

Just popping in to say hi. We took a little trip to Palm Springs, in spite of Covid, and it was so sunny and warm and beautiful there (and sea level, which makes a huge difference for my lungs right now) that I walked 5 miles two days in a row. I wanted to stay forever! But now we are back in Denver where we are supposed to get 3 feet of snow this weekend. I am going to try our Peleton. I haven't been on it since last November, but hoping I can do it. And Marla - I love your approach to getting those walks in. I need to try that. I can totally feel the loss of muscle in my legs.... so as soon as this snow clears up, I will try that. I am anxious to try to get back into some semblance of shape before the summer. My breathing is better in general - I am off of my oxygen now - so I know I just need to build up stamina again. IT is the beginning - the first steps - that is so hard, I think!

    Great to see everyone!

    XO

    Andrea

Well, today is more physically productive after yesterday's rest day. Aiming for at least 10000 steps in my half hour walks. Think I will pick up dessert for after my lunch or dinner and walk an hour to the burger joints. I enjoy their mini cinnamon donuts. Very yummy and would net me around 6000 steps along with the around 3600 I already have. My goal is a minimum of 10000 which I have just reached, went to burger joint for some cinnamon donuts for dessert after lunch or dinner.

Hi Mara, excellent job! I like your plan, 3 or 4 short walk in total 10000 steps per day is wise and doable. How are you feeling after all walking? I bet you are less tired than do a long walk. I will try cut my walking in 2, 20 minutes-ish per day, start next month, still I am cautious.

I started walking every other day after my back pain reduced, with no time frame, I just do it until I feel tired, that’s about 20 minutes more or less. Surprisingly I managed to walk 40 minutes yesterday, while at least 20 minutes I was on the phone talking with a friend!!! Usually I could not talk while I walk vice versa, due to shortness of breath! I did have some quick breathing but in total I was good! It is one of many advantages of continuous walking.

I took today off as a rest day but will be doing my normal walking tomorrow as it is my infusion of Herceptin tomorrow morning at the cancer clinic. I walk there and back and it helps stave off the infusion exhaustion. I typically don't like to walk more than an hour in total, but the three half hours work best for me. I also huff and puff if trying to talk to a friend but I am never short of breath, just breathe hard with exertion which is fine with me.

If you can walk 40 mins, feel free to bump up your total walking even in 10 min bouts and aim for 3 or 4, then 15 mins of 3 or 4 walks. That is a steady increase without taking too much out of you at a time. If you ever find you have back pain, try to take small steps. The small steps can alleviate any back strain.\

Good for you with the walking though.

I got my replacement Fitbit on Friday (my 4 year old one finally died) and I did 1.5 mile walks on Saturday and today. I am motivated to get more active but am patiently working myself back to where I was before brain surgery and lockdowns.

Slow and steady will do for now.

Glad you are enjoying those ski holidays lehrski.

I have my infusion at the cancer clinic today so will get a walk to and from the clinic which is 50 to 60 mins depending on my pace. I know I will want to walk more as it will be warmer today. I may also walk around the third floor of the cancer clinic while waiting for my infusion for a few minutes, I get bored waiting to go in. We will see about that.

Today has been much more productive as far as walks. I am already at 14000 steps in four separate walks, two before breakfast and to and from the burger joint for me wee burgers. Did not order lunch as do not need the extra calorie count. I forced myself to go right after I did the daily jumble. Planning to sit around and watch TV and earn pennies toward my burger purchases.

I found that the shorter steps and faster help alot for any little bit of knee and back pain. Used to do a longer stride but that stressed joints and back a lot so adopted the shorter steps to make up for it. The brisk pace today was good to wake me up on the first walk. Each walk used to be half an hour or so but moving faster save

I took yesterday as a rest day, bad idea. I find that if I don't walk at all, I am far more depressive feeling and that is no good.

I think my definition of a rest day better be along the lines of an hour of walking or 6000 steps and stick with the goal of 15000 if I feel like doing it. I did do well today as rolled out of bed, emptied my dryer of washcloths that sat in there all night, fed the cats and quickly whipped on a wig. This worked better and shows I cannot rely on myself to do what I need to unless I do a walk first thing.

Three walks down, looking for 2 more to reach my 15000 to 16000 step goal today.

Snowdrop, I think I missed answering what you asked about how I feel after walking. After each walk I feel more energetic. My energy during a walk also has to do with if I have eaten right before the walk as my system is tied up with supplying blood to joints while walking and also digesting food. I like to work off any sugar I may have had as well as other foods. Good for my digestive system too. In your case, the 40 minute walk is something good to shoot for but if you have time and the weather is decent, 5 or 10 minutes around the block throughout the day help with the energy and are just as beneficial too. You are doing awesome though.

Hi Mara, thanks for sharing your experience. I started walking around mid March last year, with a couple of hundred feet around the cul-de-sac it was my maximum. and now I’m in 1.6 - 2.2 miles, yay! When I started walking I also had a bad fatigue se of medications, so I had to walk afternoon when my energy was in a better level, now over a year the afternoon walking came to habit, and also it helps for a better night sleep habit as well.

I am going to use your suggestion, cut the walking in 2 shorter courses for a while, and then cut them again, you are absolutely right 3 or more activities help boost energy level, and I believe it is time for a small change for me now. I’ll update how it goes soon.

wow I cannot believe I did it!!! First walk 2900 steps second walk- 3 hours apart- 3200 steps, I am happy with my progress, I feel much better, no need to push myself for further steps, no bored of doing same things. I’ll work on a better plan, see what time would work better.thanks Mara for encouraging me.

Snowdrop, that is excellent walking. So that equals about an hour for most people and that is excellent. The time you walk will be whenever the mood strikes you. Morning is good for a walk since it can set you up to keep walking throughout the day, evening can be good as well.

I am only about halfway through my walks. Sweaty though but that is OK, looking to do 4 half hour walks I think. I am at 6000 steps so far. Nice sunny weather.

Well, did my 10000 steps today. I did 3 walks at around half an hour. Did take a stumble, though not a full fall yesterday, so I am still a little nervous on the sidewalk, feels like lifting the right foot super high to avoid tripping on the sidewalk pavers. Made it though and am sweating like a pig. Can't wait until summer if this weather makes me sweat so much now ha ha.
