Jackie, your thoughts are well written on why women should have the right to make their own choice whether to have an abortion. Society in general is so insistent that women will have huge remorse afterwards, and that females can't possibly understand all the ramifications so every little detail must be displayed and discussed beforehand. Society insists women be maternal. I also think far too many people romanticize the issue by thinking its usually a pretty 16 year old with a high school boyfriend who gets pregnant and the answer is the girl should just have the baby because her two loving, financially sound parents will help her raise the child. Too many people never think of the many different true, often grim realities of why pregnancies may be unwanted: poverty, abuse, incest, health, ect.

Your memes are so on target today!

My thoughts on abortion are, if you don’t want one, don’t. But don’t tell ME I can’t. I may have a million reasons for wanting one, none of which are your business. And you can take up the issue with your sky daddy later. And if I did have the kid, are you going to help me raise it? Or lock it in a cage? Rs won’t answer that

Where are the people who protest at abortion clinics or churches when those mothers need help raising the children? Their efforts would be better applied to fundraising so children do not have to live in poverty, suffer from nutritional deficiencies due to lack of access to nutritious foods or having the money to purchase them, preventing child abuse for children who were unwanted but were forced to be born, etc. It would be better if they put their money where their mouth is and that they stop imposing their supposed "Christian" moral or ethical code on others. This is a personal decision that a woman has the right to make and it should concern only her.

Meanwhile, birth control has been defunded but you can bet your sweet bippy that they did not defund those little blue Viagara pills for all those sanctimonious conservative men who have a right to procreate at will. Where are they when the woman becomes pregnant?

I have witnessed the aftermath of incestuous pregnancies ( a 10 year old), unwanted pregnancies, botched abortions, child abuse etc. and in the end someone has to pay, unfortunately sometimes with their life.

I can't believe that Trump hasn't thought of red masks that say MAGA on the front. I hope it never occurs to him.

I remember a book I read while pregnant that stated 'every child deserves to be a wanted child'. I was a mental health counselor and I don't remember anyone who came in for treatment because they'd had an abortion. I have a friend who regrets hers so it can go both ways. But it should be every woman's choice.

I watched a program on PBS last night that was excellent. It dealt with the heat wave in Chicago in 1994. The filmmaker showed how the poor zip codes were the ones overwhelmingly effected by the heat. She also went on to discuss how much money is spent on disaster preparedness. None of the officials interviewed could see how the slow disaster of poverty was everybit as important and costly as a tornado. Millions of dollars are spent on communication trucks, moveable morgues and training, but very little monies go to conveniently located mammograms for poor women. Why is it that government is so willing to throw money at the shiny stuff, but ignores what would truly help society? I get so very frustrated with all of this. I do wish it would be so simple as removing Trump. I sadly do not think so.

Today the state had 707 new cases and 25 more deaths. (Chicago had nearly half of both the new cases and new deaths). State's positivity rate remains at 3, but Chicago's on the high side of 5. I believe Mayor Lightfoot should roll us back to Phase 3, even if it means the wine dinners are off again. Once again, the bulk of the new cases are Gen-Zers and younger millennials milling around in bars and in lines to get in, sans masks, cheek by jowl. Idiots holding house parties too. Stupid, selfish, impatient brats who think they're invulnerable and that the rest of us should just seal ourselves into our homes. Watching videos of that lake "sand bar" party in Rapid City, MI made me want to hurl.

I vividly remember that awful 1995 heat wave, which forced the city to institute official well-being checks on the elderly, as well as designate certain air-conditioned public buildings (even buses) as city "cooling centers." Unfortunately, due to COVID they now have capacity limits, and the pools & beaches are also closed. Bob was mostly at Holy Cross Hospital then, which surrounding neighborhood had already lost most of its historical Lithuanian community and was getting poorer and more gang-crime-ridden daily. Every night, he'd come home with horror stories about elders who'd died from heart attacks & strokes (practically "cooked" to death) because they lacked air conditioners or even fans--and those who had fans were afraid to open a window lest their homes get invaded (a definite possibility, alas).

My heart sank when I heard that RBG is back in the hospital with an infection requiring a surgical procedure, probably from a blocked bile duct again. I hope she can last long enough to keep Trump from being able to replace her.

I was just thinking about RBG. I hope that she would have chosen to continue to work even if Trump wasn't President. I would find it incredibly sad if all that is keeping her from a quiet retirement is that person. I hope she will hang on until January 20,2021 and for years after that.

    • Open Letter From JAMA Editor Bauchner

CHICAGO (July 14, 2020) – Over the weekend a close friend asked if anyone was going to defend Dr. Anthony Fauci. My initial response was that Tony does not need my help, he is quite good about staying on message and surviving the political ups and downs. But on reflection I was wrong.

The whisperings, innuendos, and attacks from the White House and others about Tony – on and off the record – are not only unseemly and unfair, but reveal a lack of commitment to the health and well-being of all Americans, and ultimately will be counterproductive and potentially destructive.

As we have learned the coronavirus does not respect states lines – Maine or Alabama, or political parties – Republican or Democrat. The undermining of science – and the unprecedented attacks on scientists and public health officials – risk lives in every corner of our country.

Tony has dedicated more than 40 years of his life to public service – he has been steadfast in his commitment to improve and preserve the health and public health of this country using science and evidence as his guide. He has one goal – to restore America to some semblance of health so that it can once again be a functioning society – with schools open, unrestricted travel, social engagement, and businesses thriving. He deserves our deepest gratitude and support.

So to all who are reading this – wherever you live and whatever your political affiliation – please wash your hands, keep your distance from others when appropriate, wear your masks, and please join me in showing respect for Dr. Anthony Fauci and his many colleagues at the NIH, CDC, and throughout the country who are our best hope in these challenging times.

And to all, please stay healthy.

    Howard Bauchner, M.D.

A friend and I had a long conversation on the complicated reasons people vote for the dump. One of those reasons we posited was about white male privilege. Tonight I found this piece that spells out White Heterosexual Male Power and voting for the dump... by Janet E. Helms, the Augustus Long Professor in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, where she also directs the Institute for the Study & Promotion of Race and Culture.

If the Democrats and Never Trumpers don't up their game on radio and social media, we are going to lose this election. The stuff on during drive time is toxic and the blogs on YouTube and other social media are down right poisonous. Ads are fine but there needs to be people who can talk and talk and talk. They need to drive home what isn't working and what can be changed. They need to appeal to the under-educated, which is not the same as being stupid. When it comes to talking about masks and the virus, the doctors and scientist use words that are not in the average American's every day vocabulary. They don't need to dumb it down. These people aren't dumb. The scientists and doctors just need to use the language of everyday people. What a mess they have made of the instructions on masks.

No one has ever explained what the word epidemic means or what the word pandemic means. Now the far right are defining those word in a way no scientist would ever do. The far right is filling the information void. The pandemic is going to stop us dead in our tracks and will enable Trump to win in turnout. The ill-informed will show up at the polls while the rest of us vote absentee ballot. In most states, absentee ballot aren't even counted unless the election is very close. Trump is using the pandemic to overwhelm Democrats at the polls.

I spent the afternoon talking to two people on the Governor's Facebook page about masks. I convinced one to consider wearing one. One hour later, she posts that Democrats are faking the numbers to make the President look bad. My conversion lasted one hour. I am depressed. 😢

Magiclight, definitely the preservation of white heterosexual male privilege is a reason many voted for Trump.

White men have defined our entire society and a lot of people don’t realize it.

Remember what now disgraced CBS mogul Les Moonves (due to sexual harassment allegations from numerous women) said in early 2016:

Leslie Moonves can appreciate a Donald Trump candidacy; he likes the ad money Trump and his competitors are bringing to the network.

"It may not be good for America, but it's damn good for CBS," he said of the presidential race.

Moonves called the campaign for president a "circus" full of "bomb throwing," and he hopes it continues.

"Most of the ads are not about issues. They're sort of like the debates," he said. "Man, who would have expected the ride we're all having right now? ... The money's rolling in and this is fun," he said.

"I've never seen anything like this, and this going to be a very good year for us. Sorry. It's a terrible thing to say. But, bring it on, Donald. Keep going," said Moonves.

Movies and TVs by and large are written, directed and produced by men. Think of the early TV shows like I Dream of Genie and The Andy Griffith Show. Men wrote what their idealized version of women was at the time and cast attractive women to play the parts. Now those shows are in constant reruns and have many idealizing how things “used to be". Watch them and see how subservient the women are.

I often listen to the radio and will even channel change to see if any stations are playing songs by women. The overwhelming majority of music you hear is male. “Bro Country" dominates airwaves. Recently, a FB “challenge" was to post your 10 favorite and/or most influential albums. Several of my girlfriends posted only albums by men or men groups. It made me very sad. My picks include Heart, Carly Simon, Cyndi Lauper, Carole King and groups with both men and women like Fleetwood Mac, The 5th Dimension and the duo Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

Even consider the diamond engagement ring. The standard. A white guy, Harry Oppenheimer of DeBeers (A Diamond is Forever) who wanted to drive up the price of diamonds worked with an ad agency and marketed the idea that women need this rock on their finger as a symbol of commitment and decided you should spend between two and three months salary on it.

I've mentioned the Netflix show “Mrs. America", a 9 part series about Phyllis Schlafly and the Christian Evangelical movement to stop the Equal Rights Amendment. Lots of great acting, with Kate Blanchett in the lead role. Schlafly tried to parlay her successful efforts into a job in the Ronald Reagan cabinet but in the end was shut out due to the administration not wanting to appear to be “pushed around by bunch of women.” Oh the irony.

From the series creators: What we're trying to say with the series is that when you are complicit in the oppression of women, it doesn't ultimately help you when you align yourself with the patriarchy. [If you're] protecting white male patriarchy and you're a woman, ultimately you also lose.
