Octo, it seems like a good harbinger of things to come.

Here is a nice post from Maria Shriver:

"I've known this man since I was a teenager. I believe in him. I believe he is a good man. I'm so hopeful on this day, at this moment. He asked all of us to join him at this difficult moment, in restoring the soul, hope decency, and love of our country and of each other. I'm so in, and I hope you are too. I hope you can find it on your heart to give him a chance, to acknowledge the huge challenges facing him. He will need all of us. Let's all try." #abovethenoise

New post on Margaret and Helen

    by Helen Philpot

Margaret, the immaturity shown by Donald Trump today was surpassed only by the cluelessness shown by Ted Cruz. One is gone and soon to be forgotten while the other remains covered in Doritos crumbs and shame.

The only harm Trump can do now is to the GOP, Fox News and his own brand. Good riddance. Like flies to shit, I hope his supporters follow him into obscurity.

The inauguration of Joseph Biden was glorious. Truly glorious.

"When we merge mercy with might

    And might with right

    Our legacy is love"

Our 4-year nightmare is over. Have a nice life, indeed. Wear a mask while you celebrate joyously. I mean it. Really.

    " Oh what a wonderful morning, O what a wonderful day ".

Yes, yes, yes, now we can all breathe. Un-like many times now in the past, we did not turn off the earlier morning views of Trump taking his leave. That part itself was fantastic. His words were rotten, but in most cases not as bad as they could have been. I had the feeling that someone had gotten to him and said he must not anger those who would be ready to censure him. He just have agreed.

I had trouble listening to the many lies, but at the same time I could sense the 'loss' and his knowing he failed and would have to move on. I think it was tempered by the fact of a number of losses through the last four months of his four yrs. and I also think he was indeed feeling alone and adrift. People are dropping away -- very late, but they are leaving for whatever higher ground they feel they can get on by enlarging distance from Trump. The clown and magic show is over. The clown was not funny and the magic didn't work.

So I took in the last sm. amt. of time he took to address those around him ( the crowd at Andrews Base looked quite small ). We all needed to see this departure so it would be real -- and we all needed to see President-elect Joseph Biden get sworn in and have the word elect erased as he became just President Biden. I am just filled with hope and anticipation. Here is a person who I can freely and happily call MY President. Words I could never utter about the predecessor. I am also proud of the Inauguration ceremonies. They were uplifting as were the speeches given. Nothing garish or out of place -- nothing to jolt you - just honest celebration of a person who will work so hard to get democracy and our lives back in working order. Life can begin again.

To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury; and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable; and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasion, hurry never; in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden, and unconscious to grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony. -William Henry Channing

I am just getting to watch all of this (My morning was filled with small reading groups for first graders via Zoom). I have the TV on and am viewing earlier events on my iPad. Of course I was beyond elated when Biden/Harris won but I had no idea that today would be a huge emotional release for me. I have been weeping tears of joy. I am liberated!!

I am a fan of Lady Gaga, even at my age, and was blown away with her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. It brought tears to my eyes in addition to the tears I had shed earlier. I am so glad I was able to witness this transition today and while Trump was giving his speech, that mute button meant I did not need to hear his whiny voice. Per character he still had the cultural slanders in his speech. What a loser and I hope the reception in Fl was larger than his send off crowd. It was really nothing to brag about and I bet many were there to make sure he was leaving. Sort of like attending the funeral of someone you did not admire, you go to make sure they are dead as a friend of mine said.

Sorry for those that live in FL that will have to deal with him now. Hope the residents of Palm Beach are resolute in kicking him out of Mar-a-Lago.

I look forward to what Biden-Harris will bring to us and hope we can all offer our support to assisting them with the task.

If you have a weird sense of humor and are horrified by the whole Trump/entitled rich people crowd; you might want to check out the book Squeeze Me by Carl Hiaasen. The story takes place in Palm Beach during the charity ball season. One of the elderly socialites mysteriously vanishes and the story takes off from there. A Winter White House, a president & first lady who are a very thinly disguised Donald & Melania, a lady protagonist, some bad guys, a love interest, snobby rich people, a poor immigrant, an eccentric guy who lives in the swamps, and big snakes mix it up in this mystery/satire/social commentary. I found it hysterical!

ruth....I normally don't like mysteries, do you think I will like this book anyway? I definitely have a weird sense of humor.

Another awesome part of the inauguration was the pledge in sign language. Gaga and J Lo were both incredible!

What a glorious day! Il DuceBag didn't get his military parade/flyover, and (presumably) AF One flew back empty (except for crew) to Joint Base Andrews. The swearings-in were wonderful--I nearly lost it watching Harris' first official act, swearing in Warnock, Ossoff & Becerra, and then Pat Leahy taking the chair as Senate President Pro Tem. Then watching Biden start signing EOs got me choked up again--and not just because he was using an actual pen and signing his name. The champagne is chilling as we speak.

And I finally got a vaccine appt for next Tues., mid-morning at a far NW Side (almost suburban) Walgreens--closest one that had any times available. Not a morning person, but beggars can't be choosers.

Ruth, Hiaasen is one of my favorite authors in his genre--a worthy heir to Vonnegut & Thompson.

Lady Gaga has always had the goods and I knew she would not disappoint. She is the iconic thoroughbred superstar of entertainers and always, always delivers. She had a huge dove with an olive branch pinned to her chest. Her performance was stellar.

I also appreciated Garth Brooks using his iconic country superstar influence to sing Amazing Grace. Simple. No frills. Just what was called for. As a way to say we are all in this together and its time to move forward.

    cm2020,

I know you asked ruthbru but Carl Hiaasen writes mysteries for those who don't like mysteries. I am one of them and I love his work. I find his books clever and humorous, humor being something not found in many mysteries. He writes books for middle and high school students as well.

I continue to be riveted to the TV and for the first in 4 years my atteis held by hope and not horror. In celebration, I am going to order something delicious and have it DoorDashed to me. I lead a wild life 😂

cm, it's very light on the 'mystery' part. If you have a weird sense of humor & are both horrified and bemused by the outrageousness of the Trumps, you will laugh out loud when you read it.

I have watched TV all day & will all night too (a little later with a glass of wine in my hand) & then for a first time in years, I will get a good night sleep.

exbrnxgrl and ruthbru...Thank you both! I have added it to my Goodreads list to read. I am most assuredly horrified and bemused (now that he is out of office) the classless tRumps. Add that to my weird snarky sense of humor and this book should be delightful.

And my little state's Senators did us proud. Including the mittens!
