Hi Elderberry!
When I watched a couple interviews with Hillary Clinton the last couple days, the thought that came into my mind was that I am 100% certain that had she been president, we would NOT be in our present situation. She would have followed the pandemic playbook & we would have nipped Covid in the bud. We'd still be vigilant like other countries, but our lives would be a lot more normal. If this doesn't illustrate the point that elections have consequences, I don't know what will.

Welcome, Elderberry! I hope Canada changes its immigration policy to allow American Democrats to seek political asylum. (Wishful thinking, I know: no matter how much I'd be willing to put up as collateral--yeah, I know Canadians are too nice for that to be a "thing"--I would never be allowed to immigrate due to my expensive medical history).

Welcome, Elderberry! Thank you, Canadian sister, for supporting us!! I hope to go visit Canada again one day. I have a friend in Alberta, and another friend in BC.
Ruthbru, you are so right. The pandemic would still be here, of course, but it would have been handled MUCH BETTER!! Science would have been listened to. We would have a national mask mandate. There would be policies for reopening stores, bars and schools. GUIDELINES!!! Based on science!!
I won't be watching the RNC. I just cannot watch idiot people sing the praises of tRump. No way. I'll get highlights from Colbert and Trevor Noah.

I'm going to watch the whole RNC convention. I'll fast forward through some speeches but I want to see if they can pull off a convention as smooth as the Dems. It should be a real contrast to see a bunch of old white men in contrast to the youth and diversity of the Democratic convention.

The problem, often not discovered until late in life, is that when you look for things in life like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. The most successful people in life recognize, that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation. For me, I am driven by two main philosophies: know more today about the world than I knew yesterday, and lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you. -Neil deGrasse Tyson

Ananda, I am mainly only watching like you to find contrast. I do think in the main it will appeal much more to those who are dyed in the wool. After the last few weeks I can't imagine that hearts and minds could be changed by a RNC convention. I only worry about those who will possibly vote for Trump for the economy that actually has little to do with the majority of people. Only the very well off can take any TRUE refuge in the economy.
You are braver than me. I don't think I'll be able to 'watch' too much though. I'll have to be satisfied with the recaps on the news -- knowing that only the harshest and most vile will likely end up there.

Last night Rachel Maddox said that the RNC had still not released a schedule of events for the convention, so I believe they are scrambling.......as usual.

To me, this says it all. Case closed.

I'm probably the only one to just ignore the whole "show"... I mean the only words that come out of that clown's mouth are lies anyway. And yes, I am prejudice... Prejudice to know-it-all blow-hards who just lie their way out of their used-to-be honorable places in our administration. The loser Trump is a narcissist and has given America the worst reputation ever!
He is a laughing stock to the rest of the world... and I for one am just ashamed.
On another note... We are invited to our neighbor's "socially distanced" annual get-together this afternoon... They have never been seen in our neighborhood with masks on! Why do so many of these "younger" people choose to defy the state mandated "masks everywhere" policy? Even when we go walk around the block, we have our masks on!
Is everybody giving up on safety? Or am I just in a crabby mood.... Hah!

You crabby? Never. I wouldn’t go to that party today, doesn’t sound safe.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons I will look in on the Reps. convention. The thing I did read, and it could well be just this way, is that no matter if the Reps. work hard to do the technical things very correctly they have two things likely against them big time going in. The cast of characters listed as top participants, and VERY much so Donald Trumps inability to leave well enough alone. If he hears negative things ( which he should be hearing all the time ) he will have to FIGHT back because he can't let even a minor slight go.
But, I think I don't have the stomach ( nerves of steel ) for hanging with it long. Just that contrast and then I'll let the recaps fill in. I think though that MSNBC ( Rachel Maddow/Nicole Wallace and maybe another or two ) will be watching just as they did during our convention. I will have to find a news source ( after what little I watch of the RNC ) that is not showing the convention non-stop.

Now here is a glaring truth.

This should make a lot of Trumpers really mad, but I'm not sure it will. I mean -- most of the time stupid people are blissfully un-aware which is why they are such easy marks. Maybe this time they will actually see some "light". That would be nice. Then again -- they'd be super pissed at Bannon, but not Trump.

The NYTimes today reported that the "Apprentice" gang of reality show producers (led by Mark Burnett) is scrambling to come up with something watchable for the RNC. As to whether I'll watch, I'll defer to what Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) said when asked whether he'd attend the 2017 inauguration: he and his sons planned to go watch a dumpster fire instead. Speaks volumes that the only living GOP ex-President is refusing to attend or even tape an appearance.
To bring the USPS mess down to a personal level: I am subscribed to "Informed Delivery," a daily e-mail showing me photos of the mail I (allegedly) have coming. Among today's "teasers" are the bill for Bob's Part D premium, mail-in ballot applications, and a letter from UIC Health--which is likely my eye melanoma biopsy report. (UIC is transitioning to MyChart and discontinued its own patient portal before I could get an "invitation" to set up an account--but I can't sign up to link UIC's MyChart to my NorthShore and Amita portals till after Labor Day--so I'm in limbo). But the e-mail's fudge-factor CYA weasel-words disclaimer says "mail shown here may not arrive for several days." The only mail that came today was my "Yo Semite" T-shirt. Grrrrr....
And now it's been confirmed by several sources w/in the USPS that the "changes" are being surgically aimed at large cities with majority-Dem. electorates. DeJoy is halting the changes...but only in rural areas, small towns and red states. Street-corner collection boxes and sorting machines are still being removed in the big cities. The GOP is so drunk on power (and desperate to keep their jobs) that they are calling the slowdown a hoax and any aid bill for the USPS "politically motivated." I was going to drop my ballot in a special Bd. of Elections collection box in front of our library (which is our ward's early-voting location), but my HK pointed out that unless those boxes are safely indoors by the polling location, they can be sabotaged by pouring in paint, ink or other liquids to ruin the ballots deposited in them. And no matter how early I mail my ballot in, there's no guarantee it'll arrive at the Bd of Elections in time to be counted.
