Great cold winter 2 hour hike at 9000+K elevation. Then long walk after lunch. We will bundle up even more for a walk after dinner. We have plenty of cold weather gear. It is 19F most of today and currently feels like 6 with wind chill. Ruth this is your weather Smile. It was cloudy most of today, late afternoon the sun peaked out in time to set. Tomorrow will be great as it will warm up to 31 so will go for a longer hike. There is snow on the trail but mostly packed down.

Ruth - good for your godson and his wife doing what made them happy. Great photo of the Elfin Dance party.

Have a great rest of the day and Saturday.

Karen, the groom called his parents, and in a very worried voice said, "Something has happened. You've got to get over to (the town where he lives) and meet me at the Court House!" and he wouldn't say anything more..... so they thought that he was in some sort of serious legal trouble! They are a family of pranksters, and he got his parents good with that one!

It was 10 below with the windchill today so walking was not at all fun. I just did an indoor walking DVD to finish off my steps for the day. A town 60 miles south of us got 8 inches of snow today whereas we got a dusting......thank goodness.

Oh I love the photos of Claire's Christmas tree and the Elfin dance party, the photos cheered me up this evening. I had a hard day. I lost a dear friend (and my line dance teacher) to breast cancer this morning. She was an inspiration and loved by so many. She always had huge, full classes because she had such a passion for dance and music and made the classes such a joy. She quit her management job 30 years ago to follow her passion of teaching dance (clogging was her specialty). She fought breast cancer for 16 years. She said many times that all of the dance classes she taught kept her healthy many years longer than her doctor's ever thought possible after her first diagnosis. She was a big believer in keeping your body moving, much like the beautiful 80-year-old walker in Ruth's photo. I did get outside for a four mile walk this afternoon and it really helped me both mentally and physically.

Claire: Beautiful tree. Christmas trees are so peaceful and calming. Glad you decided to put it up.

Ruth: Congratulations on your physical exam. Love your yearly prescription! Good picture of the Elfin Dance Party. Your godson saved a lot of money.

Karen: Relax and enjoy your break.

I was hesitant to tell you what the temperature was when I walked today. Not 19 degrees like Karen. Not 10 below with the windchill like Ruth. It was 72 degrees. Yesterday I saw several people in shorts and flip flops. This is not normal but enjoying it while it lasts. Tomorrow is possible rain and mid 60s.

Another great day of winter hiking colder than yesterday but blue ski and sunny. We hiked for 3 hours which is our max from 10am- 1pm. When we left it was 7F. got into the teens when we were done. In the town it was warmer. We head home tomorrow morning. It was nice getting away - so nice not to deal with the everyday minutia.

Can't sleep so got up to read and here I am on the computer!!!

I have been exercising to Bloom Young's weight loss walk for 14 minutes each morning, then I have been swimming twice a week (indoor pool). I had sprained the ankle that I previously fractured so was in PT for a few weeks but now feeling better. I hope to be able to walk in my neighborhood and maybe ease back into yoga.

Claire, nice tree! Ruth, Bruno is so big now. coffeelatte, sorry to hear about your friend.

Also trying to keep moving. Went snowshoeing yesterday. Did get some bad news in that they need to do follow up scans on a small spot in my lungs they're not sure about. Could be nothing. We'll see in January. Hopefully they are no longer triaging in the hospitals.

Merry almost-Christmas (thanks, Claire, for that refinement)!

Thanks for the support. I feel better today now that I have processed the loss and can take comfort knowing she is not in pain anymore. So even though it is much colder and very cloudy today, I am going to get my shoes on and get outside for a walk. I took Claire's recommendation to heart from a few years ago when she recommended to get outside if you can to exercise for the physical and the mental boost. I had been doing most of my cardio indoors on our exercise machines until I read her post. I tried it and it worked for me! Since then I try to get outside to walk or bike and I can't believe how much better I feel. It really lifts my spirits when I can get out and move. It is helping me deal with Kathy's death.

Oh gosh, coffeelatte. I am so happy that I was able to help here. Right now, I am contemplating my walk yesterday to see if that applied. I will say that I did have a sense of triumph once I got back from my very wet trudge, if that counts as a mental boost.

Today is a new day and I am going skiing! Just glorious out, and probably the only sunny day for the next week or so.

I did Phase 1 of the Great Purge yesterday, gleefully tossing my nonprofit management books plus a couple of really weird self-awareness books given to me by a then friend when I started breast cancer treatment. I want to get most of the purging done this week. I have all my utilities and insurance done other than returning my Comcast box and cancelling my contract, hopefully forever. I will do that the same day as the movers come to pack.

I feel a lot more festive with freshly colored hair. Amazing how those details make a difference.

I decided on a duck for Christmas dinner which is now in my freezer. Not that difficult, and I love duck with cherry sauce. Otherwise, normal vegetables - local ones from Carnation Farms. No puddings this year as I was unable to find suet. The ingredients will keep and next year, I will make sure that I get the suet in November.

More later. Need to get into my ski gear and head for the trails. That is after buying a parking pass. It's supposed to be cold and snowy this winter in the PNW, so the first of many skis. New places to explore. Today will be just a warm up.

Let the new life adventures begin.... - Claire

    Welcome, Celand!

Crossing my fingers that the spot is nothing, Heidi.

Claire, you are going to be super-busy from now until the move. Exciting times!

Coffee, you are so right about the benefits of outdoor exercise....especially for the mental health!

NotAsCalm, you will have to give us regular updates on your progress. My goal always is to get at least 4 hours of aerobic and 4 hours of toning in every week, (except when I am on vacation.....then I slack up a little on my toning requirements). This keeps me doing a wide variety of exercises instead of the same thing every day.

Celia, I have just been making the list of the groceries I still need to get and a schedule of when to do what (while watching The Sound of Music on TV).

Yesterday I went to PiYo and got my outdoor exercise by shoveling snow in the cold. (We got about 4 inches the night before.) Today I did 30 minutes of dancing to some utube routines, went to yoga, and my outdoor time was spent supervising a backyard play-date between Bruno & the neighbor dog.

Heidihill, snowshoeing sounds like a lot of fun. You must have enough snow in your neck of the woods to be able to do it. What a wonderful way to keep moving. I hope your follow-up scan in January brings you very good news. Scans can be so nerve wracking until the results are in.

Ruth....think skiing does both nicely. At least, that is what I am feeling at the moment post soak in the tub. BTW - I can't wait to have enough hot water in my new place in Coeur d'Alene for a really hot post-ski soak.

I have a mammogram next Monday but hoping to slip in a day of skiing in advance. I will do the full course this time. I just couldn't my first time out this season.

My new place is one flight down which I think is a good thing. Stairs are one item that I could use more of. By the time I am totally moved in, I should be good.

Feasted on leftover pot roast. Red flannel hash next Happy

This week is telling the people where I live. I have kept mum, but time for them to know. I am beyond stoked to be on the verge of this next step. I cannot believe that I am so fortunate. - Claire

Sound of Music is my favorite movie - always watch it when its on TV - but tonight didn't think I could sit for 4 hours so recorded it - I will watch it in two settings and hopefully can forward through the commercials. DD#2 took me to see it on the big screen when it came out a few years ago for 1 day! It was awesome.

Claire - love hearing about your new venture!!!

Ruth - I love your photos of Bruno and all of your activities. Nice way to mix up both cardio and strength/toning.

NotasCalm - best wishes to you on your goals. I really should make some goals for myself for every aspect of my life. My husband likes to make goals for me, but I have to remind him he is not my boss.

Karen - I love The Sound of Music, too. I grew up watching it every year.

Heidi - I love snow shoeing, But I am probably 1000 miles away from snow shoe country. Sending good vibes to you for your next scan.

Claire - oh goodness, so exciting. I love that you have found a nice place to retire that has everything you want. I love to do research for my perfect retirement place, but I am 6.5 years away from true retirement. I really hope I can retire then AND have my health so I can enjoy it.

I have been going to the gym more regularly to lift weights. I feel pretty good right now. The big challenge now is to not eat too much of the treats we have in the house or the ones we plan to make!

I think my goal over the Christmas break is to find some yoga videos I can watch on my iPad so I can do them upstairs where we have more room. We had our carpet pulled up downstairs and replaced it with vinyl planking. So the surface even with a yoga mat is too hard for me so I need to be upstairs on the carpet and yoga mat. We had to clear off all the clutter downstairs as well and it all went to the spare room. Sadly, all that stuff is still there. So that's another project I should tackle.

Hello to Wonderland, Celand, Celia C, Coffeelatte, and best wishes to everyone!

GoKale....you make a very important point about staying active. Life is a lot more fun when you are able to enjoy all the wonderful activities it has to offer. For example, I have no doubt that I will be able to ski Lookout Pass. Though I may find it challenging, not from the exertion involved, but from the altitude! Unlike Karen, I live at sea level, or nearly.

I need to get up skiing at least a couple more times before I leave.

Though I can't predict the future, I think I will be continuing my consulting work part time. Or at least that is the plan. This means I can expect to be extremely busy during some weeks of the year but have other times when I am completely free to do what I wish. Unfortunately, one of these busy times is over the next 2-3 weeks when I am also doing the move!

(I am not complaining. Having this work will make an enormous difference in my ability to furnish my new place the way I want to. I am going to a place with a separate office/guest bedroom which means that I need a new sofa at the very least. But I am also ditching my old, tired bookcases, my Craig's List desk, and the like. Later on, it will fund my travel and fun.)

I think that I am most looking forward to no longer having to constantly prove myself. An enormous relief. Other than of course making sure that I can do the uphills on the Nordic trails. Yesterday wasn't pretty, but it was the first time out. I will be much improved my next time, hoping next Sunday or Monday.

Now to invoice for some work I finished up a couple of weeks ago..... - Claire

A busy day here; we got a couple more inches of snow so I shoveled & then raced to the grocery store to finish up with the shopping before even bigger hordes of shoppers were out. I've been washing bedding, making beds, doing a little baking, made a casserole for the friend with the sick wife & now I'm going to Barre Sculpt followed by NOTHING! (I made the same casserole for our dinner.) Tomorrow will have to involve cleaning....yuck!

Love these, Karen! Winter is my favorite time of year.

On my end, the great news is that the project has been moved back 4-5 days. Makes all the difference in getting it all done. There is hope yet.

Definitely feeling Sunday's ski. Hope to get up 2 more days prior to the move. Wish me luck. Meanwhile, thankful that I made pot roast last week. Will be just marvelous with the fresh green beans I found at the supermarket on sale!!!

Ruth....Bruno is quite the handsome lad. I am sure that he will be quite "helpful" over the next several days. - Claire

Claire, Bruno is so tall that he can reach the kitchen counters with no trouble. Yikes! I put a folding table in my walk-in-closet and am storing the goodies in there. We'll see what happens when we are carving turkey, mashing potatoes, making gravy etc. (none of which can be done in a closet). The only way to train him to be a 'good dog' is to put him in different situations ,so I don't want to banish him to his kennel or the backyard or where ever without giving him the opportunity to behave.

Karen & Heidi, your pictures could be made into lovely puzzles or postcards!

I'm off to Pound in a few minutes, will probably go to Barre Sculpt and Dance2fit tonight since I am going to be doing a lot of eating over the next week. I believe I consumed about a pound of gingerbread cookies yesterday......if I am exaggerating, it's not by much!

Heidi - DH took the photos. We are both up early. You photos are great.

Ruth - Bruno is a handsome dog. Love storing the food in the walk in and training him. We had two Bernard and the male could get anything off the counter. He wasn't as really as Bruno but he was craft. The only think he never took were bananas. One time he got a jar of peanut butter and manage to get the lid off and eat it all😂 Great WWW photo.

Been working in the house. So far have managed two tasks I wanted to do so that's good. One was to really clean/dust/vacuum our bedroom and bathroom. The other clean the pantry and counter. Found so many things in their that I forgot about - canvas and recycled grocery bags, lunch sacs, wicker baskets and more. Most went in give away. I need to start putting a list on inside the door what is in there!😂. Also taken time to read and bake. 3 batches of cookies this week. Oatmeal walnut chocolate chunk, chocolate pinwheel and quiaresimali. May make one more type cookie that I haven't made in several years and tomorrow a Bundt marble cake. All but the oatmeal cookies I haven't made in several years. Having sun around he eats so it is more fun to bake. He tells me and DH that we hardly eat anything. Sun normally is off T, W but this week he worked T but has the 24th and 25th off with holiday. So he will be home for Shabbat dinner so will cook pastrami brisket, grilled thighs and 2 kings gels (potato and carrot) plus asparagus and roasted Brussels sprouts. Will be lots of leftovers to eat throughout the week. I was going to make steak Saturday night as a treks but DS said he is hanging out with a friend all Saturday and won't be home till 7. He said he'd eat it when he got home. I said that I would save them for another night when he is off. DH and I will enjoy Friday “leftovers “ Saturday night. Wow, I've gone on way too long!

Heading to the furnace room and crawl space to work. Also I need to find time to read a couple chapters in book for book study by next Friday. I'm co-presenting after break. I have not checked work emails. Ya me! I've been also reading for pleasure.

Another warm day. Will go for a walk around lunchtime.

    Have a great Thursday.

It started raining about an hour ago - not too hard so we might be able to get a walk in. Mountains are getting quite a bit of snow. SW mountains 2 - 3 feet and "front range" mountains 1 - 2 feet.

My Shabbat dinner is done - its amazing how much more time I. have when I don't have to go to the grocery store and I didn't even start till 10 or so and took a break for a walk. Lots of food that will take us through the week-end. Challah, roast garlic, green beans, asparagus, roasted Brussel sprouts, grilled chicken thighs, pastrami roast and marble cake. It will also serve as tomorrow nights dinner. We eat a light lunch all week so no different on Shabbat (Saturday) - generally tuna wrap, tuna on a salad or if we have left over salmon we have that. DS is home for Shabbat dinner so that is a treat for us. Tomorrow he is off and is spending the day with a good friend. He has today and tomorrow off with holiday pay.

One week of winter break is over and one to go. Enjoy having the time to work/putter in the house. And to relax and read.

To those who celebrate, have a happy, healthy and enjoyable Christmas.

Heidi: Love your pictures. Beautiful snow and blue sky. Thinking of you and your upcoming scan. Heart

    Ruth: Such a festive group!

Hi Everyone. Just a quick note. Been cooking all day for tomorrow for our family Christmas. That way I just have to heat up the food for dinner. Ds is coming in late tonight. Tomorrow ds, dd, and I will serve Christmas lunch to the underserved population in our community through the church I attend. The church serves a takeout lunch every Saturday. I've never volunteered for the lunch and I couldn't think of a better Saturday to finally help. We are looking forward to it.

Was able to walk/run yesterday and also late this afternoon. Wishing all of you the absolute MERRIEST!!!
