Ruth - sorry to hear about your uncle. Hope your memories bring comfort.

Enjoy, Karen! A well deserved break for you.
Ruth: I'm so sorry about your uncle. He sounds like such a wonderful man.
Walked early this morning. Tomorrow is mow-day. It's supposed to be a tad bit cooler. But I would rather have Ruth's weather!

School is out for the summer. 10 weeks to not think about work and well deserved R and R. Lots of reading and long walks.
Have a great Friday and weekend.

Just checking in on all of you. I’ve been reading posts. I’m envious of Ruth and Alice’s meetup. Sounds so nice and relaxing! Karen, that is one great advantage of teaching: summers off. I haven’t had a summer off since 11th grade and I didn’t even know it was my last. Dad insisted right after HS graduation that I had to work or take classes year around. That summer I took two college courses. After that, I did both.
This chemo cycle hasn’t knocked me down as hard. Still neutropenic. But less so. I am having some neulasta bone pain though. It’s not bad if I don’t move around too much. It hadn’t started on Saturday so that day I got steps in with our amazing dishwasher replacement. Between dear husband and I we made 7 trips to either Lowes or Home Depot. Way too many unforeseen steps, but we were thrilled when we were able to run the first cycle in our new dishwasher. It’s much quieter and cleans much better than the 25 year old one it replaced.
Hopefully next week weather and better blood counts will make exercise doable again.

sarahmaude, Claritin (not Claratin D) can help with the Neulasta bone pain. It's a treat to get a new, upgraded appliance.
I want to get a lot more yard work done today. Tomorrow will be spent in the car. We will drive to my brother's house (he lives on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border), stay overnight, get bright and early on Sunday, drive a few more hours into Wisconsin, attend the funeral, jump in the car & drive all the way home. Yikes! Karen, he was such a fine example of a decent, loving human being, and such a fun/funny guy, that his memory will truly be a blessing to all who knew him.
0 -
Ruth: Safe travels on your unexpected trip.
sarahmaude: My Kenmore dishwaster is 22 years old and I wouldn't take anything for it. I don't rinse dishes and they usually sit in the dishwasher for several days before turning on the machine. They come out completely clean! Hopefully your new one will last a long time.
Karen: What a wonderful time of the year for you!
Mowed 80 minutes today. It was much cooler than yesterday. The grass is getting thicker which makes it harder to mow so getting a better workout.

I’m finally feeling better today. Bloodwork on Wednesday showed severe neutropenia, but based on last cycle, next Wednesday will bring me way up. Neulasta bone pain meant it was working. Yesterday I hardly moved, today I will do something.
Wonderland, there is something powerful in the old appliances we can trust. Just knowing how to efficiently load my old dishwasher was comforting. 25 years for my KitchenAid definitely swayed my decision on getting another. Of course this one is different, but we’re adapting well.
Ruth, I’m sorry for your loss. I’m glad you have such good memories of your uncle. I think that means he had a life worth living and you can celebrate that. There is actually joy in that grief.Lost my father-in-law in February. He was a bitter and miserable soul. Made my sweet mother-in-law live way below the level of happiness she deserved for years. I can say that neither my husband, my kids, nor I grieve his passing at all. I guess my sadness is that he lived such a life of misery and never saw the goodness all around him.

Sarahmaude: Sorry about your neutropenia.Thank goodness for the Neulasta shot. The pain it produces is horrible but the shot is much needed.
Yesterday I marched in a Gay Pride Parade and attended a wedding. Busy, fun day! I'm on our Girl Scout Council's Gold Award committee and a Girl Scout who has been assigned to me organized the parade and reception afterwards as part of her Gold Award project. She lives in my city and I've known her for a long time. it was the first pride parade ever in my city and it was organized by a teenager in Girl Scouts. Amazing! There were about 200 teens, children, and adults in the parade. We walked on sidewalks with police presence to let us cross streets as a group instead of waiting for traffic lights to change. Only had one heckler. Everyone else was very receptive.
I woke up early yesterday to get my fast walk/run in before the parade. The wedding was lots of fun. I like to dance at weddings but I didn't know ANY of the music the dj played when the dance floor opened. Not one of them! Even a young guy sitting at my table who was 25 didn't know some of the songs. I felt old lol.

Sorry you are having such a rough time with chemo, Sarahmaude. You're halfway done, correct?
Sounds like a fun day, Wonderland!
We got to my brother's in the late afternoon yesterday just ahead of my sister & BIL. The guys & I walked to the restaurant (the other ladies drove), which was a couple miles and going down a steep staircase. We also walked home, so got lots of exercise. Today consisted of driving a couple hours into Wisconsin, spending about 5 hours with the funeral & visiting, and are now almost home after 7 hours in the car! The funeral was wonderful. My uncle would have loved it; a full house, fantastic music, funny and heartfelt stories. He was a person who, despite many hardships and sadness (including the loss of a child), CHOSE to feel that he had been lucky and blessed. A great example for us to follow! Anyway.....no exercise for me today.

I went to Dance2fit this morning (the instructor, who is a school teacher, is off for the summer so has added a morning class, did 'dog stuff' this afternoon & went to Pound at 4:30. I SHOULD go to the grocery store as I have no food in my house after basically being gone for 2 weeks!
0 -
Ruth: It's hard to get into the routine of grocery shopping and cooking when you've been away!
I let the garden weeds get away from me. Pulled weeds for 90+ minutes. Not fun but necessary. Picked my first cucumber and have a few zucchini that will be ready in a day or 2.

Walked early this afternoon. Then grocery shopped. Not a whole lot going on today. Yesterday I finished my book about Gettysburg and it just makes me want more!

I did yardwork, Barre Sculpt, and Zumba. I told a friend who's having some family problems that I'd bring her dinner; and now I have been sitting in her driveway for 20 minutes waiting for her to show up. She isn't answering her phone and I am about to eat it myself!

Hi everyone,
Ruth-sorry for your loss; your uncle sounds like he was wonderful. Glad you got to celebrate his life. Your boat ride with Wonderland sounds like it was a great time.
SarahMaude- I hope the bone pain is settling down for you and your treatment is helping.
Karen- congratulations on making it to summer break! We are done on the 20th.
TT- I have been reading about BII and feel like a lot of it applies to how I feel. I have not spoken to dr about it yet. I feel like it will be similar to discussions of fibromyalgia years ago since it's not a recognized diagnosis yet.
Wonderland- the parade sounds amazing; what an accomplishment for that Girl Scout!
Results from my catscan showed there's a 4.5 cm cystic lesion on my spleen that's favored to be benign. Recommendation is a follow up scan in 6-12 months. They sent the results to my oncologist in case he wants to do anything else so we’ll see.
I had an appointment with my GP and talked about my ongoing Covid symptoms that have not resolved. My positive test was 2 months ago. Fatigue, shortness of breath, brain fog will not let up. Sounds like rest is the only answer. So frustrating. Her recommendation was to take the rest of the school year off but anyone who has been a teacher knows how impossible that is at this time of the year. So much to do. I took this morning off but need to be in this afternoon.Just need to make it to the 20th.

Ruth - I hope you just left the food outside her door - unless of course you enjoyed it.
Been doing really well with steps that past several days.
Yesterday was really my first day of summer vacation as Sunday and Monday were a religious holiday. Wasn't top productive but it felt good. Need to start making a daily list or summer list of what I want to get done in the. house before we travel. Also plan on lots of walks, reading and getting together with girlfriends.
Have a good Wednesday

Just catching up. I am sorry SarahMaude, but I think you said this is the last round of chemo. Wonderful news, and it gets better from here.
My weekend activity was binge watching the Platinum Jubilee as there were intermittent downpours here. Just loved it, especially HM The Queen having tea with Paddington Bear. Now we know what she keeps in her handbag!
Padding Bear was created using a hologram and so were some of the other special effects. I was just reading in The Economist how complete performances can be created that way. It looks like you are seeing the performers, but it's all virtual reality. Fascinating, but also a bit unnerving. One way of keeping the Elvis franchise going in Las Vegas.
Anyway, the other performers were very real other than Elton John which was pre-recorded because he had a conflict.
My garden is flourishing with all the rain. I had intended to do a long ride yesterday but had a nasty headache, so I retreated and finished the pots at my entryway. I may add a white geranium to each; they didn't have white, and I just couldn't do a red with the two pinks. I was trying a different place which is not easy to find as the sign (or rather the top sign) says Huckleberries and it's not listed online. Cash or check only. Good prices. I think I can guess which fruit they sell in season. Right now, it's jam.
My kayak comes tomorrow. I went the cheap route in the end. Life jacket will be here Sunday. I did this after my test run last Thursday to be sure that I could paddle without sinking. I went for portable and inflatable as so much easier to carry around and store. My friend Susan got the same model, but with an extra seat for her dog.
All booked for my August trip. So glad that I am finally getting to Scotland, not to mention seeing my friends in London. All that's left is an Airbnb in Glasgow, but that can wait. I am doing the London to Glasgow and back leg by train which turned out to be a lot cheaper than flying and getting from Heathrow to Euston Station by Tube is easy enough. I am actually looking forward to traveling through the Lake District and seeing the Scottish Borders again.
I have gorgeous lupines on my dining table appropriated from a vacant lot. Just the blue ones but glorious anyway.
I am so enjoying my patio. I can read out there or just listen to the birds. I think the neighbor's dog has figured out that this is my territory as well. Just a joy and I am surrounded by herbs and flowers. Loving the scent of the Sweet Alyssum that I planted.
I found the discussion on bitterness interesting. I don't have time for this. All it does is consume you and prevent you from enjoying life. My exes' late sister collected injustices which she had no difficulty finding. Less than wonderful stuff happens to all of us - it's part of learning. But it's easy to get sucked into the culture of victimhood which I have had more than one opportunity to join.
Much more fun to try your hand at kayaking! Or at least, that's my theory.
Have a wonderful end of week! - Claire

Sounds like your new digs are amazing, Claire. Your upcoming trip sounds wonderful too!
Ginger, hang on until the 20th (as a retired teacher, I know it is much harder to do all the planning to be gone than to just stick it out....which is why I worked through chemo and had a baby three days AFTER the school year was done!). Then really plan a good month of doing nothing but to rest and rejuvenate! Glad your spleen issue seems to be benign. Hopefully you don't have to do anything else with it.
Karen, my friend finally showed up. She is under so much stress that I couldn't be mad, although I did bawl her out for not answering her phone!
The Wednesday Walking Women wandered around a Frontier Village (tourist site) that is now open for the summer.

Finally cleaned the house. Barre Sculpt & Dance2fit tonight.

Ginger: Glad you found what was on your spleen. Hopefully it will resolve on its own. So sorry about your lasting covid symptoms. I'm sure you're doing what you can to reserve your energy. It's exhausting to be exhausted.

Ruth: Fine looking WWW picture. Looks like cool weather.
Karen: I always have a To Do list. My mother did and I learned it from her.
Claire: Have fun kayaking. We used to have a double kayak and it was so much fun!
Walked early this morning. Cooked the first zucchini from our garden for dinner. We compost and today I spead some in different areas around the house. Plan to seat back and watch what grows, if anything. The first year we used the compost, we had volunteer pumpkin plants to grow. I want my prediction of more pumpkins to come true.

Wonder - I stopped making a "to do" list years ago as often it was too lofty - I know in my mind what I want to do - sometimes I'll write just a couple things done to get done.
The heat is on - mid to high 90s for the next several days
0 -
If I didn't have a "to do" list, I wouldn't get anything done ever!
I still log my exercise in a notebook every day, as well as reporting in here, so I am very much a 'write it down and check it off' person.Yesterday I went for a walk with DH & DD (dear dog) and did MORE yard work. I'm going to Pound in a few minutes. It's our wedding anniversary so we are going to check out a new restaurant on the lake later today. It will be in the 80s for the next few days here, perfect summer weather!

Happy Anniversary Ruth!!! The restaurant on the lake sounds like a fantastic way to celebrate.
Karen: Your heat is coming our way.
Dd (in this case, daughter, not dog like Ruth's dd) and I had a fun day together. Started with donuts and coffee. Then a trip to the Farmer's Market. Ate lunch at our favorite drive-in. Went into Winston Salem to go to a craft store and Costco. She has a membership there. I find it overwhelming with so much! How can there be world hunger with all the food available in just this one store!?!
Walked/ran in the late evening. Not looking forward to the heat that will be here this week.

100F yesterday and 98F today and tomorrow!!! Way too hot for my blood anytime.
August 1st both DH and I will be fully on medicare. My pcp only takes a few Advantage plans and does not take regular medicare. So I'm going with the advantage plan through the state retirement system. DH is going with a regular medigap plan. I didn't know this but if you don't initially go with regular medicare/medigap within 6 months of signing up, you could be turned down due to pre-existing conditions. I don't want to look for a new pcp - The plans offered by the state retirement system are the same with different out of pocket and copays.
Happy anniversary Ruth
I guess I have sort of a "to do" list but it is more generic. I used to make my list too long and never get much checked off. I'll write it in the morning. Wonder and Ruth - you are right, if you don't write something down, even one or two things, the day goes by and nothing is accomplished.
Need to walk shortly before it gets too hot.
Have a great Sunday

I also went to the farmers market yesterday. Got a host of spring veggies here including a spinach type vegetable that is delicious, salad, greenhouse tomatoes that tasted like field-grown, and wild rice harvested by a small outfit from the south end of Lake Coeur d'Alene. Then I went and got some yak tenderloin to have with it. Just yum! The wild rice was not cheap, but anyone who would go through the process of manually harvesting and then drying and removing the chaff is someone whom I want to support!
There was a man selling onions and blessing his vegetables and all the purchasers. I must say that the onions are that good!
Still very much spring here with cool temps with the next couple of days being in the low 60s.
My dining table is now set up and the pictures rearranged. The whole living/dining space looks just fabulous. Packing went to the dump and old table to Goodwill who were thrilled to get it. It's amazing how a table of slightly different proportions can totally transform a space; everything looks perfectly integrated and flows properly. Being about 8" narrower meant that I could move my sofa back a few inches and nothing looked crowded anymore.
I am trying to figure out where to cycle today. Think over to Post Falls Dam and back which will give me my 60 miles for the week. A lot of the route goes through nice residential where the people spend good money on their gardens, and it's nice to see all the flowers and blooming plants. I think I will make a pork loin roast tonight as just delicious and will use up some of my fresh herbs. I am getting a bumper crop with all the rain.
More later. Happy Sunday everyone! - Claire

Claire - dining table is great. Would love to see pictures of the whole space. Sounds like you are having a great summer exploring the new hood and surrounding areas.
forecast 98 or 99F with potential again to break 100. Yesterday was. hot but only mid 90s - cloudy most of the day.
worked in the closet that goes under the stairs (we live in a one story with a basement). I haven't been in there for several years. I had a plastic bag than a comforter came in filled with old wool blankets - some 65 years old - took bag outside to wipe off all the dust - and on the top blanket were little white "worms" - and you could see that parts of the blanket had been "eaten). I didn't even bother looking at any other blankets - just threw them all out. KInd of bummed me - but to be. hones, I forgot they were there. Would have preferred to donate them, but not possible. One blanket is in all the infant pictures of me.
spent more time working in that closet and still lots more to do - we put stuff in there many years ago - some old work stuff from my husband that will all go in the garbage. An old Smith Corona manual type writer from the 1970s. Lots of kids stuff and lots of papers that are all garbage as they are so old. We used to use the closet but once my son put his box spring in there a few years ago, we didn't go in. I went in there to put books that my son didn't want to take with him and decided it was a good time to clean it out!!!
Have a great Tuesday.

It sounds like you are having lots of fun getting settled, Claire1
Very productive, Karen. I think 'stuff' actually breeds in closets!
I went to yoga yesterday & am off to Dance2fit in a few minutes. We are in a thunderstorm alert for today & tomorrow. Nice Wednesday & then the temperatures go up, up, up. Must be summer!

I have the electric fireplace going, and it's not for show either. Just drilled holes in the two planters that didn't come with drain holes so that my geraniums don't drown. This should give you an idea of the main living areas of my digs. I still need to think through my office, but at least the dining table is out of here now and assembled! - Claire
View towards the sitting room area, a combination of slightly formal and very comfortable. I think you need a bit of red in a northern climate to warm things up on this wet Junuary day with temps in the 40s.

Looking across in the opposite direction. Colors and proportions came out perfectly. Dining chairs are super comfortable and tie the room to the 18th Century artwork on the opposite wall and 19th Century porcelain in the cabinet. I love the fact that the floor can be mopped after dealing with off-white carpet the past 15 years.

Looking towards the kitchen. Note the large pantry in the corner. Lots of room for everything. Laundry is to the left of the fridge with even more storage. Cookbooks are in the bottom of the bookcase. Left bottom is a German History of Art from about 1905. Many of the illustrations are of artwork that no longer exists or was lost during the two World Wars. Of course, the bag at the left top of the island is a cycling bag that needs putting away.

Your place is lovely, Claire!

Claire - your place is very cozy and inviting - enjoy it in good health

Karen: I agree with Ruth. Closet stuff tends to multiple! Also in garages, at least in mine it does. Yard work stuff, bird feeder stuff, stuff, stuff, stuff. Argh!
Claire: Really like your new apartment! How nice that you have a fire place. That's a sweet kitchen - and it has a pantry!
I haven't been exercising regularly. The heat and humidity (97, 98 degrees) arrived on Monday and has not let up. We are supposed to have a break this weekend. I'm meeting a friend to go hiking on Saturday and I'm thankful for the predicted heat break.
I have been painting some. I found these cute wooden cutouts for 70% off and couldn't resist. The 2 flowers are 6 inches. The top one is for the Girl Scout I mentioned who organized a gay pride parade for her Gold Award project. The second one is for a friend who has been diagnosed with bc for a 2nd time 10 years after the first diagnosis. 10 years ago she had a lump. and radiation. This time it's a mx (in the other breast), chemo, and radiation. She's 74 and I've been calling her every couple of weeks to see how she's managing. The summer cutout is just something fun for the deck. Salem the cat kept swishing it with his tail when I was taking the picture lol.
