Sandy, nice veggie score, but what the heck are haricots verts?

Sunshine, being in scan machines don't bother me either. They did my husband tho, and my neighbor/friend as well. Brag away, at least someone got some sleep! And I'm right there with you on the weight loss. My ideal weight for me is 145, but I can't get out of 130-135.

WallyCat, I had a better night's sleep last night, I hope you did too. Other than getting up to pee, I think it was 4 times! I assume it's weather issues that make it impossible to grow tomatoes? Too cold and not enough sun?

NM, where for art thou? I hope all is ok and you are just busy.

Well, I drove out to get the corn, an hour one way. Left the house around 9:30am and when I got there, a big sign, on the closed gate, "Sorry, all sold out". I just can't get any fresh veggies this year, waaaa!!! Settled for some corn from the grocery store, I hope it's good. Promised my neighbor, who has been in Phoenix caring for her DD that just had surgery, that I would make dinner for her and her DH when she got home, so she didn't have to cook. Just having some sloppy joe's and corn on the cob.

I can't fix the format, stupid website!

    DOTD: Sweet Corn Cocktail

    For the Corn Simple Syrup

    • 2 cups of water
    • 2 cups of sugar
    • 2 ears of corn

    Corn Cocktail

    • 1 ounce vodka
    • .75 ounce corn simple syrup
    • .50 ounce fresh sweet corn milk
    • pinch of cayenne
    • fresh cracked black pepper
    • pinch of salt
    • .75 ounce ginger beer
    • For the Sweet Corn Milk
    • 1 ear of corn
    • Instructions
    • For the Cocktail
    • Place the corn milk, syrup, vodka, pepper and salt into a shaker with ice.
    • Shake until well mixed, strain into a cocktail coupe and top with ginger beer.
    • Float a pinch of cayenne on top of the drink.
    • Cheers!

    For the Corn Simple Syrup

Husk the corn and using a sharp knife, cut the kernels off the ears of the corn.

In a small pot, bring the water, sugar and corn kernels to a boil.

Allow the mixture to simmer and reduce a bit so you get a syrup.

Strain out the liquids via a cheesecloth or mesh strainer.

Store in the fridge in a sealed container.

    For the Corn Milk

    Husk the corn.

Using a sharp knife, cut the kernels off the ear of corn.

Place the raw kernels into a food processor and process until pureed.

wren, I love that the nurses leave the IV line in from the nuc med/bone scan injection so that they don't have to start a new one for the CT scan. There have been a few times where they couldn't schedule my CT scan until later in the day, but I usually just walk in there and tell them I have a CT scheduled and my IV is already in place. They've always worked me in and are appreciative not to have to start a new IV.

    Good luck with your scans!

Goldie, indeed, the cooler nights are hard for tomatoes. We have close to 18 hours of daylight in the summer so the sun isn't the issue. I think I made that rant about Daylight Saving time. HATE it.

I also do not mind the machines (I was one of the original guinea pigs when MRIs were being developed; I worked at GE and they were always looking for volunteers). Heck, I got paid…slept through all of them. It is always the results that weigh heavily on me. The wait is brutal.

I did sleep fabulously last night. I popped 20 mgs of melatonin (vs my 10) and that seemed to do the trick.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Monday monkey day! It's been a bit of a busy weekend for me. I had to cancel a meeting for Friday afternoon after the network dumped me out and lost 3 hours of work Thursday night, and I couldn't get it all redone in the couple of hours I went in early, and then didn't have time to work on it during the day due to being sent out to do visits to cover for staff that had called out. So went in Saturday and got the bulk of that done and rescheduled the meeting to this coming Friday. Took Zoe with me, and then went to visit Mom. Tried to get some laundry and stuff done yesterday, but was so tired I sat down and fell asleep in the recliner. I'm trying to stop going in extra early to ketchup or keep up after a couple of episodes last week when the Senior Patient Care Manager asked me to help out with some work and then stood in my office door and scolded me for doing the very things she asked me to do because I didn't tell her ahead of time I was going to do it and making more work for her. I just can't figure her out. Add that to all the changes that are supposed to happen "over the next couple of weeks" for the last couple of months and I'm losing confidence that anything will ever change.

On the upside, a week and a half and I have a week off and am going to visit my brother and his wife in North Carolina. I think I may look at houses and jobs while I'm there, a little bit.

Goldie--both house look really nice from the outside. Have you seen any inside pictures? The wait list for the place Mom is looking at may be long in numbers, but with Mom being private pay I know she'll get moved up on the list, and with many people on multiple lists and getting in other places and some people ending up moving into assisted living or nursing homes due to health changes it probably won't be terribly long a wait. Probably more than the month or so Mom is hoping for, but probably not a year.

Carole--yeah, the temps are really swinging this summer. Not only is it hard to believe it's August, it's closing in on half way through August already!

Reader--I hear you about being tired!

Wren--in your pocket! Prayers for good results.

Chi--glad to hear you don't have ONJ!

Sunshine--good sleep is so important! Good for you for getting some good sleep and the positive weight change.

Wally--never heard of Japanese turnips. How are they different?

Goldie--all is ok, just busy and running out the door as soon as I get up and dressed and the puppers fed. The Corn Cocktail looks wonderful!

Sunshine--1 IV start is plenty, glad you can get more than one test out of it!

    Wren, good luck today.

WallyCat, we don't have DS here, which is fine with me, as I go to bed early. However, I do prefer the longer summer days over the shorter ones in the winter, when it seems like it's never gonna get light out. I found this list of tomatoes that will grow in cooler weather, iffen you and DH wanna give it another try. I think the reason I didn't get any tomatoes, was because it was too hot for that variety. My brother in MI grew the same ones, started his a month later than I did, and he's eating nice fresh tomatoes from his. I got nothing! I did get blossoms, but they didn't produce any maters. https://www.tomatofest.com/Tomato_Varieties_for_Cooler_Climates_s/47.htm

NM, so sorry about the issues at work, ugh! Well, hopefully mom can get in sooner than later. There should be pictures of the inside of the houses in the link. By clicking on the top picture of the house. However, my brother went and looked at them both. One he said he couldn't see me in, but the one in Oxford he could. I just can't justify myself to buy a house that I myself haven't seen. So, I'm not going to ask for him to go look at anymore. Would you move to NC if you found something? Would your mom go with?

Had an enjoyable time with my neighbors yesterday. Today I need to organize and go through a bunch of papers/bills.

    DOTD: Tomato Campari

    Ingredients
3 cherry tomatoes, plus ½ for garnish
3 small pineapple chunks, plus 1 wedge for garnish
1 medium strawberry, plus 1 for garnish
    ½ oz. simple syrup
¾ oz. freshly squeezed lime juice
    2 oz. Campari
    Soda water
    Basil, for garnish

    Instructions
Put all ingredients, aside from the Campari and garnishes in a cocktail shaker and muddle them as best you can, releasing as much juice from them as possible.
Add the Campari to the shaker, put the lid on and shake, and strain into a glass filled with crushed ice. Top off with a splash of soda water.
Garnish with a half a cherry tomato, a pineapple wedge, a strawberry, and a basil leaf or two.

Well, I screwed up and my scans are tomorrow. Meant I had to cancel my coveted hair appt. I'm hoping she can fit me in somewhere because I'm leaving town Thurs to stay with my son for a week in Oregon. He will drive me down and I'll take the train back up. It's pretty convenient. The prices vary, which is never the same, so I don't know how they decide.

My hair looks like a bad comb over which it actually is. So hard to keep the scissors out of my hands. I have very fine hair on the sides so I really need someone who can see what they're doing and knows how to hide bald spots.

NM, you make me happy I'm retired. OY on co-workers. Japanese turnips are sweeter and very tender. You can eat them raw and they taste like a nice radish more than a real turnip. The greens are super tender and mild.

Killing time till I go for my DEXA scan.

Goldie, thanks for the link. I'll see if DH tried any of the ones listed.

Wren, hope there's room in your pocket for the scans (and hair appt. Wed.).

Lori, haricots verts are those little (not-quite-baby) French green beans. (Literal translation: "green beans"). Apparently the French don't care for regular mature ones.

DOTD Sat. night, at the Dearborn (after "Tommy," which was amazing) was Lucien Albrecht Cremant d'Alsace sparkler. Yesterday at Hugo's/Gibson's (adjacent, share a kitchen, menu items interchangeable), Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs brut. Tonight with "surf & turf leftovers" (from the weekend), 2021 Caymus Conundrum white with the "surf" and North Vines 2020 Merlot (Central Valley).

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Twofer Tuesday! We're waking up to rain this ayem, after a run of sunny, or at least partly sunny, days. The alarm went off while I was dreaming this ayem, makes it very hard to drag my bod out of bed when that happens. I'm so glad I got a clock that shows the day of the week and date along with the time, I really thought it was Wednesday until I looked at it and saw it's only Tuesday! Good thing I noticed, because this month's Wednesday, Women and Wine is a Temporary Tuesday, getting together after work today.

Goldie--I don't blame you for not buying a house you haven't seen yourself. I am seriously thinking about moving to NC, after retiring. Mom would probably go with, to be near me and my brother. Mom seems to think my moving is a done deal, but I'm still deciding. I never considered leaving Maine before.

Wren--bummer to mix up days and end up missing the hair appointment. I'll be in your pocket today!

Wallycat--I'll have to look for Japanese turnips to try! I hope the Dexa scan went well.

Chi--what is "Tommy" about? The restaurants that share a kitchen sound like fun.

I'm seriously thinking about starting to drink again. Just a glass of wine in the evenings "to help me sleep" but I really don't want to do that. I had wine four nights in May while visiting my sister and nothing since then. It was delightful but it's been freeing not to have to go buy wine. I guess for now, I'll drink virtually while I'm here. LOL

I'm definitely not a wine snob and the single-serve bottles of merlot or pinot grigio are fine for me. So, if I ever stop by to visit any of you, don't waste the good stuff on me. I wouldn't know the difference.

Happy Tuesday, loungettes! You all are the best. Thank you for not kicking me off this thread for just drinking water. 😍

Dexa results —- I am still osteopenia, so one less thing to think about seriously for now. I suspect the prunes are doing their thing.

Haricot Verts are a french variety of green beans; they are thinner and do not curl like "regular" green beans. We are trying to plant them as bush beans this year and we'll see what we get. DH never harvests the regular beans early enough for me so this will be an interesting experiment for us.

Wren, sorry about the mix up. Pretty sure we are all guilty! I hear ya on the hair. Now that mine is short AND thin, my problem is my ears! I have HUGE ears!

WallyCat, I too am happy to be retired! Funny how we can get excited about only having a "certain" thing wrong with us.

Sandy/WallyCat, thanks for the explanation on the the haricots.

NM, I think Mother Nature forgot you, re summer. You should be enjoying Temp. Tues, if you aren't already home. Should be about 9 pee em for you now.

Sunshine, we would NEVER boot anyone out. Many girls here hardly drink. It's all about the love, support and fun. And I would not know a good bottle of wine either. Cheers!

Had video visit with MO today, I might have to have another infusion for kidneys, Retacrit. Depends on what my blood levels are. Otherwise, full dose of chemo, instead of half. I'm getting so sick of all this medical BS, it's getting old! LOL!!! May not have time to post in the morning, we'll see.

Kim, "Tommy" was the first ever rock opera, written by Pete Townsend and recorded by his band The Who in 1969. It's the story of a 4-year-old boy who suddenly goes deaf, blind & mute when he witnesses his father (who had been shot down in WWII and presumed dead but comes home as a surprise) shoot his mother's lover in self-defense. It follows him through his childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. Its most famous song was "Pinball Wizard." I'm surprised you never heard of it; I'd say you must be too young to be a classic-rock fan, except that my millennial son is a huge fan. (I even saw a few "twentysomethings" in the audience—maybe their Gen-X parents or even Boomer grandparents brought them).

Anyway, director Ken Russell made a horrible movie of it in 1974. Almost 20 years thereafter, Townsend and LaJolla Playhouse director/playwright Des McAnuff decided to make a stage musical out of it, which debuted on Broadway in 1993 and snagged a couple of Tony Awards. There was a 1994 national touring company, a 10th anniversary tour, and countless college & community theater productions. McAnufff approached Townsend last year to mount a 50th anniversary version of it, updated to show its parallels with current societal phenomena but also to more fully develop the characters, flesh out the choreography, and make the plot more relevant & coherent. This time Townsend co-wrote the book as well. The visual special effects (computerized, lighting, projections) were a huge improvement over the analog ones in the original and the nonexistent ones (and not even a real set) in the 10th anniversary version. Townsend addressed the audience, saying it's the definitive version (and he oughtta know). Reviews have been glowing. If it comes to B'way (or the national touring company comes to New England) I hope you get the chance to see it. (Listen to the 1969 album first if you want, but for the love of everything holy, DON'T watch the movie).

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Hump Day! Well, it finally happened. I had a meltdown at work about not getting the info I need and being expected to do things without being told, constantly getting scolded for doing things wrong without ever being told how to do things right and getting inconsistent or even contradictory instructions on the rare occasions when I do get instruction. End result is that now, finally, more than a year after starting, I'm going to get some orientation. At least that is the plan. I'm not going to trust that it will happen until it actually happens. And I told them that I didn't trust they would follow through, since I've been promised this several times already and it never materializes. It will be interesting to see what happens from here.

I came home from work last night and had major cuddle time with the puppers, fueled by pizza and wine. It's amazing how gently the puppers take the pizza from my hand before wolfing it down like they haven't eaten in months!

Sunshine--I hear you about the glass of wine "to help me sleep" even though I know that alcohol actually disrupts sleep patterns. I'm with you, the expensive stuff doesn't always taste all that much better than the supermarket wines, and I drink it for the taste.

Wallycat--good news on the Dexa scan. Can’t wait to hear how your Haricot Verts experiment turns out!

Goldie--I think you may be right, Mother Nature is getting senile. Or has mistaken "summer" for "rain". So tired of rain. More than 3 inches in 24 hours yesterday. I can imagine you are getting tired of all the medical stuff.

    Morning, Wren!

Chi--thanks for the info on "Tommy." Maybe it will get to Boston sometime and I can catch it there. I haven't done a Boston theater trip in ages.

    Hump Day Cocktail

NM, I'm surprised you managed not to have a meltdown before yesterday. Hopefully it will bring positive results.

I've been having some sleep disruption that is probably caused by alcohol consumption. I need to skip the before dinner cocktail and see if there's improvement. The problem is my enjoyment of our drinking routine. Skipping the martini might help with some weight loss, too. The odd part is that the sleep issue just started this summer. Tonight we're going out to dinner and will not have our martini. We'll probably have a glass of wine with dinner. Not complaining just sharing.

DH and I had a glass of chianti at La Pasta restaurant last night. To our surprise it was slightly chilled but we're not connoisseurs and sipped it with our delicious meal. I didn't have any additional alcohol and slept well last night. So I will skip my martini tonight, maybe have a glass of iced tea with a splash of bourbon. I'm conducting my own health study! One difference last night was being a little slower to fall asleep.

    Wishing everyone a happy Thursday.

  • carolehalston
    carolehalston Member Posts: 8,288

It's decaffeinated tea. I brew a pitcher of tea every day or every other day in the summer and always squeeze a wedge of fresh lemon. Just had a glass with my lunch.

  • wallycat
    wallycat Member Posts: 1,455

Interesting to try chilled Chianti. I know the "caves" of Europe are colder and that is where wine was stored, traditionally, so modern times are serving wine a bit warmer than typical. I leave my reds on the counter once opened but may try the fridge for a few hours.

DH and I each caught a pink salmon yesterday! I was so happy to see him get one. He taught me everything I know about hunting and fishing but I have out-performed him ever since. He has a thick skin and roots for me, but it is nice when I see him catch too. Pink salmon tastes very close to a trout. It will be dinner tonight. I'll be drinking whatever is open, even if it is red.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy TGIF day! Happy TGIF day! Well, it seems having a meltdown at work is going to have some benefits. The Senior Patient Care Manager has started actually talking to me, and telling me what she expects and how she wants things done and arranging for me to get an orientation to some things that I'd given up asking for. So there may be hope here. But, I'm reserving judgement, we'll see what happens when I get back from vacation, it may all go back to the way it was.

Five days until vacay. Not that I'm counting. Planning to pack over the weekend.

Carole--Iced tea with bourbon sounds yummy! I like white wines when they are cool better than at room temp.

    Morning, Sunshine!

Wallycat--Congrats to DH on his catch!

Hi all, I have not been on in awhile. I went to NY - Chemung County area. I have quite a lot of family living there. I flew up with my mother and my sister, my cousin eloped a few months back and was having a big party and also her parents (my moms sister) have both died, my aunt a couple of years ago and my uncle last year. They had a funeral and buried there ashes together. My cousin lived with her husband 17 years before they married, not sure what sparked the urge to marry now, but it was a great party and they are happy.

Goldi- glad that you are off that diet, and it is everything they tell you to eat to be healthy, it would need to be a big change in thinking and taste buds to follow it.

Illimae - I love wine with a piece of dark chocolate, it is always a special and elegant treat at night.

NM - I think you will be happy in NC with your family, but not sure how you will survive without Wine, Women and Wednesday! lol

I loved the weather in NY, there was even a couple of cool days. Fl is so hot right now, just not as hot as Arizona…but I bet more humidity. There was family from my uncles side from Maine and they were hot. I think they are from Levant, Maine. I am not sure where that is.

I am having a glass of Arbor Mist pink Moscato (pineapple/strawberry)

I love reading what's going on with everyone and think of you all.

Last might I had some li d of blueberry martini which was very good. And half a piece of dense chocolate cake for desert. Later I had what felt like a brief hot 🔥 flash episode or possibly afib...elevated heart rate, warmth. Guess I better lay off the martinis. Or the chocolate. Or both 🙃🤣

Goldie we are moving to coastal Carolina. Family has lived there for a while so it will be good to be nearby, and warmer. NM, wishing you the best with your decision. It took us a few years to get to this decision point.

    Have a good weekend everyone.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Saturday! Mom's got an appointment this morning to look at an Independent Living place she's really interested that I'll be taking her to see. Mom called yesterday ayem to tell me about the appointment and to tell me that her brother, Kenny, who lives in Texas, is not doing well. When he couldn't be reached by phone for a couple of days a friend had a neighbor check on him, found him unresponsive and called 911. The hospital called Mom as his next of kin to verify that he doesn't want extraordinary measures done. He has a history of heart problems, so things do not sound very good at all.

After the tour with Mom I'm going in to the office to do some more catch up work, this time to catch up the employee files. That job, maintaining the employee files, is being taken over by the office manager, and I will not miss chasing people to get them to provide copies of driver's licenses, auto insurance, and the like. Once I get what is in my office now logged, scanned and filed it's no longer my work. The Senior Patient Care Manager actually let me take over some of the patient care management work she's been doing and has actually started telling me what it is I'm supposed to be doing and how to do it. Yesterday kind of felt like the first day on a new job, but this is the information I've been requesting for a months and months. Maybe, just maybe, things are going to actually change and turn around.

I leave on Wednesday to visit kid brother and his wife for a week in NC. I'm really looking forward to the break, and some nice weather and some pool time. I've already starting packing for the puppers stay at the kennel, which is kind of funny as I left the bag down where they could reach it so they took their favorite toys out of the bag twice last night!

Misty--it sounds like the trip to NY was fun and a great chance to catch up with the family! I'm not sure about moving away from WWW, either! I'm still thinking the whole move idea over, even if Mom acts like it's a done deal. Levant is not far from where I am! From Bangor, Levant is a few miles northwest. It's a small town and doesn’t show up on many maps unless you zoom in. From Bangor, follow I95 south. Levant is half way between Bangor and Newport and a bit north, on Rt 222. I live near I95 just north of Newport. I remember Arbor Mist! I haven't seen it in a while, though. I don't remember pineapple/strawberry but that sounds yummy. I remember Blackberry Merlot, Raspberry Pink Moscato, and Exotic Fruits White Zinfandel. Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Saturday!

NM, sorry about the melt down at work, but see it may may have helped. If they only knew what an asset you are!!! Vacation at your brother's will be so nice and coming up quickly. Ya know, I always said, when I go to MI., this is NOT vacation, I'm visiting family!

Carole, funny about the tea, I was thinking the same thing as Sunshine, that doesn't keep you awake. But I see it's decaf. I bought me some flavored teas to drink, since I found just water to be so boring and just won't drink much.

WallyCat, I'm envious your fresh catches of salmon. Do you have several ways of cooking it?

Misty, good to see you, sounds like you've been busy! YES it's hot here, but no humidity, unless it rains, which it finally did yesterday and day before.

Reader, I think because of my health, it's best if I get my rear end closer to family!

NM, sorry to hear about your uncle. The one HUGE thing about getting older, is that so many people die! Funny about the pups getting their toys out. I guess that better be on of the last things packed.

I got up early yesterday and left the house at 7 am to head out to get some of that Taylor sweet corn. I saw on FB that they would be selling Friday. I looked up their hours and they open at 8. I did not want to miss out again. This is my second trip out there, hour and 15 minutes one way. I get there and ask the girl if they are selling corn, she says yes, but not until 3 when the festival starts!!!! UGH
We had gotten rain the day before and I almost slid into a trench, and the day before that, coming back from Phoenix, I briefly got stuck going across the side of a hill. I managed to get out. But boy oh boy, my roads are a mess and my car is full of mud!!
Haven't been sleep well at all, and feeling puny. I think I feel better today and will be able to eat. I also have todo some baking, since I bought stuff to make a Hummingbird Cake and Lemon Blueberry pound cake. One was supposed to be to take to some friends that invited me over for a BBQ. But called and declined due to my roads. They are like, we will come get you. I said no, I can make it out, it's just that it messes up my road even more than it already is!

Goldie, so sorry on the corn!

I do have a handful of recipes for any type of fish, so we're great with that. Pinks are very mild so they can be cooked any way I want. We caught 2 more. LOVE them!

NM, hope you have a good visit with family.

Have been dealing with arrogant, self absorbed neighbors who think because they love their dogs, it is OK to break laws and we have to accept it. NOT.

Is pink salmon Chinook/King? If so, you've had a precious catch, as it's in short supply commercially.

Teetotaled most of the week, but opened a bottle of Mumm Napa 2017 Blanc de Blancs Reserve, which we had with squid salad. Going out tonight for prime rib—will likely have Pinot Noir with it.

Had to bring home takeout prime rib, as Bob got a STAT page to read an emergency EKG & echo so we couldn't keep our reservation. BUT the upside was a smaller tip, easier parking (reserved for takeout patrons) and far better Pinot Noir than L. Woods pours by the glass. I Coravined a 2019 Fess Parker (Santa Rita Hills, near Salinas & Monterey, CA) Pinot Noir.
