Morning! Yep....it's chilly out....25! But going up to 51 with lots of sunshine so I think I willtake a stroll as well....
Sounds like we all had a nice holiday - I didn't overeat either which was a good thing - haven't been to the gym all week what with decorating, baby-sitting, hair appt and DH underfoot. Today I will be venturing out to Target but we have so many of them around us (4) that they are never really busy. Drove by Kohl's yesterday tho - there weren't any parking spaces and their lot is huge.
Laura.....somehow I pictured your house differently but it sure is pretty! And the picture of mom and baby - wow! That is a wonderful picture!
Jackie.....jeepers - she has been on chemo a looooong time! It must be doing something tho. How was your pumpkin dump cake? Sounded delicious....maybe you could post that recipe. Always looking for pumpkin recipes as I love pumpkin anything.
Got a text from BJ yesterday - from the beach. Rub it in, BJ, rub it in! Hope you had a lovely day!
Connie...any snow up there? Still haven't cracked that S. King book so I know I won't be able to hand it over to you on Saturday. I'm thinking what with work, kids and the holidays you wouldn't have any time to read it anyway....
Don't forget girls....party is one week from tomorrow - if you are coming PLEASE make sure and email BJ as she needs a head count.
Off to drink some more coffee and then shower. Laughing at my neighbors' decorations...all these blow-up things....and the nativity scenes with the wisemen, who seem to be frosty, rudolph and santa! Strange.

Good morning... so much I didn't know about Grocho Marx -- so I am putting in the little blurb about him as well as the quote. He has at times had other quotes in here and I always wonder because he is and always has been such a comedian to me that I find the "regular" quotes coming from him....good but seemingly odd.
Did you know...
... that today is the anniversary of Groucho Marx' first
performance on the radio (1932)? Using his fast-paced,
ingenious patter, he invented a new form of comedy that
delighted audiences from coast to coast.
~~~
Today's Inspirational Quote:
"The first thing which I can record concerning myself is, that
I was born. These are wonderful words. This life, to which
neither time nor eternity can bring diminution -- this
everlasting living soul, began. My mind loses itself in these
depths."
-- Groucho Marx0 -
Great morning here as the sun is out early -- something I always treasure. Got my new glasses last week -- another treasure. While I see out of it, I only have about 5 percent vision in my left eye. So, last week -- not once but twice, the lens came out of my glasses - rt side. This lens has three prescriptions in it. So......here I was with my glasses on -- picture this, holding up the lens on my right eye so I could drive home with one hand -- about 4 miles and get my sun glasses which are prescription. Did not have them with me as it was a cloudy dreary day. Praying all the way home that the police don't stop me. On getting my sunglasses I immediately left with my regular ( now no rt. lens in pair ) and went to Sears. They fixed them and I ordered another pair --- and what happened three days later....the lens comes out again. Figured I would have new ones after Thanksgiving but lo and behold apparently they were not real busy and got done a day or two before. Life is definitely good when you are able to see.
Guess I didn't word things well ---- Jeanie is done with chemo....but her hair just did not come back. No one to date has a real explanation. Jean started her chemo right before I did. I finished April 30th. 2008 and she a very short while later -- some time in May I think. Thinking it must have something to do with the kind of chemo and where she got the rads as well. I'm sure we would all learn to live ok if we did not get our hair back either,,,,,but truthfully, I ( un-like some of you ) did not look too great w/o hair and I am so thankful that mine came back....even if it was a slightly darker mousy brown as usual and straight, fine and thin. Still a time of rejoicing for me.A perm and volumizing shampoo and conditioner, a little mouse and I look like -- well the old me.
Love that picture Wendy and I think that is Donna's golden laying on the rug. That is the kind of picture I can almost get lost in if I just sit and look at it for awhile.
Well, just for you Wendy....here it is:
Pumpkin Dump Cake
1 ( 29 oz. ) can pumpkin
1 cup sugar ( I put in 1/2 cup white and 1/4 cup Splenda Brown Sugar )
1 ( 13 oz ). can evaporated milk
3 eggs ( I use only Egglands Best or brown eggs )
4 tsp. pumpkin pie spices
1/2 tsp. salt
1 box yellow cake mix ( I always use BUTTER PECAN ) it pops up the flavor I think
1 1/2 cubes ( 3/4 c. ) butter, melted
1 c. pecans, chopped ( I use about 1/4 to 1/2 cup more )
I also add about 1 cup or slightly more yellow raisins -- different texture/taste sensation but if you don't like raisins -- then leave that out.
Combine pumpkin, sugar, evaporated milk, eggs, pumpkin pie spices and salt in mixing bowl. Beat well. Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13 inch glass pan. Sprinkle cake mix over pumpkin mixture, then sprinkle on the pecans. Pour melted butter over all. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Watch closely at end. Could burn easily.
Serves 12 to 15.
Pan is usually empty when it comes home.
Hope you all have a fantastic week-end. Bj you too....how lucky you are. I'll be checking back later. See ya then.
Connie - NO MORE CAST! That's great!
Wendrew - THANKS for that lovely scene. I would love to live in a log house! I would gladly trade my 5600 sq ft house for a tiny comfy log cabin, ANY DAY! How's dh?
JO - Are you the one who asked about the facial peach fuzz? I gently shaved mine off! It was so funny...I could actually see the peach fuzz on the razor! lol It looks so much better without it! lol Just FYI!
----------------------------------------
Whew...got all the exterior decorations up! Lots of work! But it was so nice being outside today.
I hope you all had a chance to get out and enjoy this day!
Last night - dh made cream of turkey soup...off to have a bowl!
I love the cozy cabin and I love the entrance to Laura's house.
I am coming to the party. Sorry I did not respond. I just assumed I would do that as Dh's cousin is not having the holiday party for the family.
We have recuperated from Thanksgiving. It was lots of little kids but fun. The dish washer broke that evening, but DH propped it back together so we are near normal now. Thanksgiving is a huge endeavor even with all the help.
Watching Demon and Angels or is it Angels and Demons tonight.
I am working too much next week and I know I need to cut back. I accepted jobs not realizing that December was so soon! Sure, I will work on December 1! Only problem is that is next Tuesday! Oh well! It beats full time.
Take care!
Susan
Laura....are you kidding. Wow !!!5600 sq ft. My house is only slightly over 1500.....so I basically have the log cabin...just doesn't look like one. Your house would make five of mine. Glad you do the cleaning there.....I could not handle that. I know it's a wonderful house that you have made a home....and I'd like it because if you didn't want to see each other for a while you wouldn't have too. Glorious.
It is very hard to believe December is now so close. I am not ready for anything but since I have finally forgiven myself for being two years behind in everything I don't feel quite so upset about it all. I do what I can and only hope the list can keep growing so it gets to be a semblance at least of the levels I use to have. I got my fingers crossed.
Off to find some dinner. See you all.
Laura- that is beautiful picture of mother and baby... and your porch looks great too.. I love big house but not that big.. Your house must be nicely decorated inside and outside... I love to come to 5th on Saturday however, my mil is coming next week from Las Vegas for Evan's 2nd birthday.. If I come, it's gonna be a long drive but I am willing to drive if I can.. I am very glad they found that drunk driver and I hope she learns her lessons..
Connie- no cast~! good for you... I am sure you feel a lot better w/o the cast..
Thanks for the cozy picture Wendy, where is marshmallows?
Susan- You don't sound like a retired... and always doing something... Oh, well, as long as it makes you go then it is all good, right?? How do you think about the movie Angles & Demons??
Donna- I know it's hard to plan anything when you are working or have a kids.. No pressure~! I Can wait...
Jackie- I can't believe neither that December is right around the corner and I am not ready for cold winter yet.. However, weather's been pretty mild so far compare to last two years and I want weather to stay like this, mild winter, that's all I am asking...
I hope everyone had nice Thanksgiving.. My dh worked on Thanksgiving night so, it was just me and the kids, nothing specially.. Oh, well, good for me I didn't have to cook any.. Finally, whole family finished antibiotics and hopefully no one gets sick again...
Navymom- how are you doing?? FYI, one more chemo to go, right?? almost done... hang in there~!
Sweet Dreams everybody~!
Morning all! 32 out on the ole' deck and cloudy. I see we might be getting snow by Thursday. I will have to watch the weather to see if I need to get gas/oil for the blower. Could be! Rats.
EJ.....(no more Elfsong??? OK...not a good idea to confuse me....thought we had a new girl)...glad your family is doing so much better. Those colds held on for a long time! What day is your son's BD? (and as for your sign off song...."you'll never know dear, how much I love you...please don't take my sunshine away" .....my Mom sang that to me all the time when I was little....thanks for the memory)
Connie....wooohoooo! No cast!!!!!!
Jackie.....that cake sounds so good! And now I get the "dump" part! Laughing at you forgiving yourself for the last 2 years....I've been putting off really cleaning up and out the basmt for the last THREE years - I'm thinking I have run out of excuses as to why I haven't done anything. I think I will take a page out of Rita's book and after Christmas...really go thru all the stuff down there and either donate and toss everything I haven't used in the past year.
Susan...yes...how was the movie? I anxiously waited for the first movie and I was sooo disappointed. It was boring. So unless you loved it....I will wait for it to come out on "free" cable. Now...there is an oxymoron for you...FREE cable!!! I now see that as of April I will need a special box to watch channels 28-75, which of course encompasses all my favs! Time to check out other ways to get my TV fix.
Buffy...how was the thanksgiving pizza? Bet it was yummy! As were the worms!
Time to shower up as I am off to Kohl's later this am....finally decided on a few gifts from there...and I have a 15% coupon, and some Kohls.cash....ever the good little shopper! Have a grand Sunday!
Hi everyone. I am looking at a very cloudy sky out of my window....most of our work will be inside today. Denny has the day off today so maybe later after supper I'll get out one of our games to play. Got a Monopoly card game a few months ago and need to learn how to play it. Thank goodness.....I have little shopping to do so won't even be thinking about it for a while.....to be on the safe side though I have been looking now and then. May have to go up to St. Clair Square. So many more stores to find something a little different.
Like Elf and Wendy and lots of you, I am not ready for snow. I like watching it come down and even like to be outside ( as long as it is a "warm" snow ) but the weather has been so odd the last couple of years that it is hard to welcome it -- who knows what you will get. So, I do not feel any anticipation at all -- just sort of missing what we did not get -- though not bad to miss out on weeks of humidity keeping you sticky and un-comfortable.
Elf & Wendy,,,my Mom sang me that song as well. Must have been a Mommy thing as I'm a fair amt. older I think. Probably more to the point that our mothers had no t.v. so relied on radios for a bit of entertainment, news, etc. I was I think 8 or 9 before we had a t.v. at our house. It was very large in those days. We were the first people in town to have one.....so as our house had the old fashioned windows as well, my dad would turn it slightly from where it was sitting on a big desk and take the window screen out and slide that big t.v. into the window. Half the town was out in our front yard watching t.v. My dad worked at the local tavern on week-ends for a long time to make the money to get it. We could have recovered the money selling pop-corn to all the people who came to watch.
Excuse me -- just had to share a good ole' days memory. Hard to imagine with the t.v.'s we have now it was ( actually in my lifetime ) a novelty and though we only got two or three stations we found it thrilling.
Hope you all will have an outstanding day.
Hugs, Jackie
Good morning everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I just had my hubby and two sons, which made it easy. My oldest son said it was the "best" Thanksgiving Day ever because he "didn't have to talk to relatives that he does not like". LOL!
I'm really looking forward to our Illinois Ladies Holiday party next week. With my schedule, I'm not on the board much. Seeing, hugging, and talking to fellow survivors means so much to me! I hope, pray, that everyone who can will come- even if it's for only an hour or two!
I promised BlackJack and Wendy that I would decorate for Xmas- and I have! My tree is up and decorations are scattered throughout. (There's a special place just for Wendy's bears too.) I have LOTS of room, so the more, the merrier!
Party info:
JanClare's home (contact lzclare@mail.com for address and directions)
Date: Saturday, December 5th
Time: 1 pm
We are providing an appetizer/small bites buffet, along with desserts, wine, soda, water, coffee and tea. There is no need for anyone to bring anything except your wonderful self. If you would like to bring a small plate of appetizers, that would be great, but please let me or Blackjack know what you are bringing. We don't need a lot of food- we've found out from experience that our ladies are nibblers!
PLEASE COME! Weather.com says NO SNOW. It should be a great day.
Friendly reminder to get your Vit D level checked. I you are taking VitD make sure it's D3:
Vitamin D for Cancer Prevention: Global Perspective Ann Epidemiol. 2009 Jul 1;19(7):468-483, CF Garland, ED Gorham, AR Mohr, FC GarlandPURPOSE: Higher serum levels of the main circulating form of vitamin D, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), are associated with substantially lower incidence rates of colon, breast, ovarian, renal, pancreatic, aggressive prostate and other cancers.METHODS: Epidemiological findings combined with newly discovered mechanisms suggest a new model of cancer etiology that accounts for these actions of 25(OH)D and calcium. Its seven phases are disjunction, initiation, natural selection, overgrowth, metastasis, involution, and transition (abbreviated DINOMIT). Vitamin D metabolites prevent disjunction of cells and are beneficial in other phases.RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: It is projected that raising the minimum year- round serum 25(OH)D level to 40 to 60 ng/mL (100-150 nmol/L) would prevent approximately 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer each year, and three fourths of deaths from these diseases in the United States and Canada, based on observational studies combined with a randomized trial. Such intakes also are expected to reduce case-fatality rates of patients who have breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer by half. There are no unreasonable risks from intake of 2000 IU per day of vitamin D3, or from a population serum 25(OH)D level of 40 to 60 ng/mL. The time has arrived for nationally coordinated action to substantially increase intake of vitamin D and calcium.
I awoke and discovered I am sick. I do not feel it is the big bad flu because I am not that sick, but I am in bed. Angels and Demons was good. What it really made me want to do was to go to Rome again. The arial views just got me excited about the Vatican. This will be a quiet day. DH is watching all his sports and I am watching Twilight on my laptop.
Hello Lovelies!
Glad to hear that everyone had a good Thanksgiving! We stayed home with a fire and watched movies and made a steak dinner, since I had chemo on Friday morning. Third tx (just one more to go after that) kept me away from Black Friday (though I never really went in for that - nothing worth getting up at 4am for). Now I'm fighting a cough that I hope will go away soon. I'm afraid that one of my students who virtuously came to class to turn in her paper on time, in spite of being sick, has infected me.
BTW, I loved Family Affair! I watched it as a child in re-runs from our local station in Los Angeles, and I sing "You are my sunshine" to my corgi all the time.
I wish I could join you for the party next weekend!
Be well, Sido
Good morning sun and all of you. Hope that sun stays though I think it pretty much will. Nothing going here today but just more work around the house. Makes me wonder -- what will I do when I get it all together -- I know, just keep doing it.
A trip to the vet in the afternoon is in my future...think a tooth has gone bad for one of my kitties.
Sido....only one more chemo....that is wonderful. Usually by this time it can't come quick enough since we just want it to be over. A little extra orange juice, and not forgetting those vitamins....and hopefully, that will help you stay on top of things.
Hope you all have a magnificent day.
Hi:
I have always related to people who work in hospitals as I think they are like people who work in schools...they just get into the highs and lows of their jobs with people. You may have seen this You-tube...it is fun!
Big hugs to all of you guys - I hope everyone is doing well that's the most important of all!Princess Juliet/Buster's Mom/Julie
Hi Everybody.
It's been a while since I posted but I read everyday. Tomorrow is my final Chemo Tx (TAC). WooHoo!! I can't wait to be finished. My bald head has a few white fuzzies growing. My lashes and brows are about gone. I can't wait to feel good and get back to living life again. Also looking forward to Christmas since Navy son and DIL are coming home.
Just want to say thanks again for being here and thanks to all that post often. I have learned so much and can feel your encouragement through your words. This thread is a true blessing.
YOU
You are the fellow that has to decide
Whether you'll do it or toss it aside.
You are the fellow who makes up your mind
Whether you'll lead or linger behind;
Whether you'll try for the goal that's far,
Or just be contented to stay where you are.
Take or leave it, here's something to do!
Just think it over-It's all up to you.
What do you wish? To be known as a shirk,
Or known as a good man who's willing to work?
Scorned as a loafer, or praised by your chief,
Rich man or poor man or beggar or thief?
Eager and earnest or dull through the day?
Honest or crooked? It's you who must say.
You must decide in the face of the test
Whether you'll shirk or live it your best.-Edgar A. Guest
Good morning everyone on this bright and pretty ( ok it is a bit nippy this early ) morn. I just feel in my bones it is going to be a good day. Susan -- I did see the You Tube piece so glad you put it on here. Sometimes I am not thrilled with some of the "pink stuff " but this just gives you a lot of CHEERFUL happy energy. You know some of those people really got it going on. I listened to it a couple of times because it gives a great boost. I also think teaching and nursing have similarities -- you are nurturing in both cases -- attempting to give something very valuable for the betterment of another.
Hi Julie. We do miss you here and is a shame you can't make the Saturday gathering. I know you will be missed, but do hope the MRI identifies and helps get your current health better.
Yay for you tomorrow Navy. Tomorrow, though it won't quite feel like it for a little bit is the start of your new beginning. Whether chemo goes down easy or hard, it is great to be done and take your life out of chemo limbo. I did not realize how focused I was on just getting through it til' I was through. Can't recall whether you were going to have rads or not...but generally they are a walk in the park by comparison. More boring and tedious than anything. Also, it's evident that you will soon figure out just what awaits amid those white fuzzies -- will it be dark, curly, thick hair, or med thick wavy blond. Bad hair days ( which you will love ) will be back before you know it.
Hope you all have a truly wonderful day -- that is what I am sending out to you.
Hugs, Jackie
I was going to do a drive by reading and take off, but I HAVE TO COMMENT on that article Laura!!!! DAMN IT ALL! This made me cry! It sounds so promising, I have goose bumps!!!! I will be saying prayer from now on that it WILL work (and that our health care will allow us to have it!). I pray it will save many many lives. This is really exciting!!!
LittleC - I'm glad you saw my link! It surely would be a miracle. It makes sense...no such thing as Heart cancer. I always wondered about that. And now it seems as though there isn't Heart cancer because of the hormones the Heart produces. Hey...maybe there is a something good about hormones! lol I'm doing okay. Still sore, but it could be worse.
NAVY.. YEA!!!!!! One more!!!!!! Remmeber that feeling and am so glad the time is there for you!!!IT is only goin on 6 mos post chemo for me!!!My hair fortunatley came back rather fast and is very thick and very curly!!!Had wave and straigher of a look prior so this is an interesting journey!!!
Had my sleep specialist appt and is really giving me alot to think about. Wants me to really rev up my PM by not dozing off so early ( 8:30-9PM) and instead force another hour and then try to get drousy. changing my scheudle may break my pattern of wake ups and to do this for a week and see if this starts to get me a more solid amount of sleep instead of all the wake ups. GONNA try and see.
The sense of normality is diefintley a journey and see i have alot of anxiety within and that is slowly being dealt with. The aftermath of Chemo is a journey and know i am slow to learn but once i get it.. i GET IT and will be more gentler on me and stop trying to go back to my old routine and ways and that alone could be affecting my sleep as it is all anxiety induced trying to be someone i am not anymore!!!I I heard this, but am just seeing this is me... my new normal is my new way of seeing things and realizing it will be ok as it is. WHOAA.. getting too deep here!!!
Hope ALL else is ok here!!Juliet.. good luck with the test!!!Good to see you!!!
Maybe snow this week...sigh. Laura.. will read your attached piece after this. Thanks for all your great info. J
BTW..Jackie.. how is your kitty;s tooth? IT is tough when things like this occurs. I have been brushing my girls teeth everynight as they are older and need to maintain this for further health issues. WE took them to their favorite park today and they ran aorund like three idiots!!!Hope your pets are all well!!!
Insomnia Prevalent Among Cancer Patients Who Receive Chemotherapy
Three quarters of cancer patients and survivors treated with chemotherapy suffer insomnia or sleep disorders that often become chronic conditions, hindering patients' ability to fully recover, according to scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center.A study of 823 cancer patients showed they experienced sleep troubles at nearly three times the rate of the general population. The problem was more prevalent in younger patients and those with lung and breast cancers, according to the paper published online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
"These numbers are very high and something we can't ignore," said Oxana Palesh, Ph.D., M.P.H., research assistant professor of Radiation Oncology at the Medical Center's James P. Wilmot Cancer Center and lead author of the paper. "The good news is that insomnia is a very treatable problem that can be addressed quickly so it doesn't compound other symptoms."
Palesh reviewed data on patients who received chemotherapy between 1997 and 1999 at private practice medical oncology groups who were part of the National Cancer Institute's Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP.)
Patients answered questionnaires after their first two chemotherapy treatments. Responses to sleep-related questions showed that 37 percent of participants suffered from insomnia symptoms and another 43 percent had insomnia syndrome, as categorized by the Hamilton Depression Inventory, a widely used measure for symptoms of depression. These patients had difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep at least three days per week.
The challenge is that once people experience sleep problems and related fatigue, they begin taking naps and going to bed earlier, which perpetuates the problem and is counter-productive to getting restorative sleep at night, Palesh said.
Sleep problems are generally combined with patients complaints of fatigue and depression however, it has not been studied to determine the causes and impact on patients' quality of life.
Authors of the National Cancer Institute-funded study recognize many factors can cause sleep difficulties, such as depression and anxiety, but note the duration of treatment and extended sleep disruptions can contribute to other health problems.
Others who contributed to the study include Gary Morrow, Ph.D., M.S., Joseph Roscoe, Ph.D., Karen Mustian, Ph.D., M.P.H., Charles Heckler, Ph.D., and Michelle Janelsins, Ph.D., of Rochester's CCOP, along with Thomas Roth, Ph.D., of Henry Ford Hospital, Josee Savard, Ph.D., of Universite Laval, and Sonia Ancoli-Israel, Ph.D., of University of California-San Diego, and Jason Purnell, Ph.D., M.P.H., of Washington University.
