I slept half the afternoon today and I'm going to go to bed much earlier than usual for a Friday night. I went up to Seattle to see my mom for Christmas and stayed overnight. For some reason, I often have trouble sleeping at my mom's apartment and this was another of those times. I only got an hour or so of sleep overnight, plus a nap that afternoon for a couple of hours. I had already had one sleepless night this week on Monday...sometimes I just get insomnia. So after having gotten only three good night's sleep in the last five, plus needing to get up early this AM to let the contractor in, I was just beat. Darn it, I've forgotten the word I was going to make! I am running out of steam, mentally and physically. Time to do the dishes, and then nighty-night.

Hi Tish! Welcome to this fun word group! Please stay awhile and have some fun with us. The originator of this thread meant it to be just 5 letters, with changing one letter. We changed the rules a bit and allowed just rearranging the letters as another way to post a new word. If you don't mind, I will go back to Curve's word of "steam". Is that ok? Would love to have you come back, and get to know us here. And we could get to know you, too!

OK, working on "steam", (which I need some of right now as I just got up!), I will go back to talking about steak, yum! Yeah Red my DH doesn't have ribeye at the top of his list either, he prefers filet mignon. I prefer more fat in my meat! Curve, I hope you can get caught up on your sleep!!! I didn't sleep well last night, but that is just ONE night....you must be sooooo exhausted!!!!

@wahine, you have beef on the brain! I keep trying to change the subject—it will be easier for you to shed those extra pounds that are bugging you if you don't think about food all the time—but somehow the topic of food keeps coming back. I became a part-time vegan earlier this year, but I was a guest for Christmas dinner and we had roast beef. I don't know what cut it was, but our host cooked it in a Weber barbecue kettle and it sure was yummy! I have gotten back up to 120 lbs and right now I'm just trying to maintain because I'm getting so little exercise that any more weight I put on right now would just be fat rather than muscles. Since I'm ER+ I don't want to have a bunch of fatty tissue pumping out extra estrogen. I think I will have to find one of those exercise programs specifically for cancer patients at the Y, but not until my back has healed up some more. It's a lot better this week. I finally found a position I can lie down in that doesn't make it even more painful, and I've been taking acetaminophen on a schedule rather than waiting for pain to get bad.

I got a good sleep last night and I feel much better! Today is the day to tackle some household tasks. There are many dishes that need to be unpacked and washed, bills to pay, etc etc etc. Also the cat needs to be moved back into the bathroom tomorrow so the contractor's crew can do touch-up work in the back bedroom on Monday. I still have no dryer, so I won't be unpacking the linens quite yet. They all need to be washed in case dust has gotten into the boxes while they were in the garage, but would take too long to air dry. Once I get the dryer and wash the linens I will be able to think about decorating. My brother and SIL gave me a beautiful Pendleton blanket for Christmas years ago and I think I am going to base my bedroom color scheme on it. It's a double bed blanket and I just have a twin bed now, so I might make it into a coverlet or even take some pieces off the edges to make matching pillow covers.

Ok, ok, ok.... ;(  if I can't think about food, hmmmmmm what shall I think about?? How about WINE, yup, big casks of wine....LOL.  Shoot, if I weighed just 120 pounds I would look thin....congrats to you for keeping such a good weight! Speaking of not having a dryer....when my kids were little (baby and toddler) and I had to leave an abusive husband, I managed to get a washing machine, but no dryer. Back then, disposable diapers were expensive, plus not as accepted as they are now. So, EVERYTHING, sheets, clothes, even diapers were hung on a wood drying rack, for all 3 of us! Surprising how well they would dry that way. A few years ago (while I was thin), my DD told me she never put her jeans, etc in the dryer so they wouldn't shrink. Well, back then it didn't matter to me if they shrunk, but NOW it does! So for the past 5 yrs or so I have hung up ALL of my clothes. My DH's still go in the dryer, but all my clothes get hung up in the laundry room....I have a pull out thing about 3' wide that has several lines on it that pulls out from the wall, plus I have the shelf the length of the laundry room that I can hang things from on hangers, plus I have things that go on top of the door, and come way out that I can hang several things on. Even my jeans will dry easily this way. Hoping for the day I don't have to worry about them shrinking, because I will not have this extra fat on me!!!!

@wahine, I could use a drying rack if I had a separate laundry room, but I don't! That may sound like I live in a shack, but really I don't, it's just that this is a very small house, only 750 square feet. When I bought it, the laundry hookups were in the garage, but I moved them into the kitchen as part of the remodel. The kitchen is only 8 feet wide, so putting a drying rack there would make it impossible to cook until the clothes were dry and the rack put away, and this time of year that might take two or three days for heavy items like jeans or thick towels. I hate to think how long it will take for that wool blanket to dry! In fact, I may take it to the cleaners for that very reason. I suspect it may be too large to do in my compact washer anyway. The back bedroom has a linoleum click-tile floor in it, but it also has the cat in it, and any clothes hung to dry in there would get dust from the litter box on them, so putting a drying rack there won't work either. That only leaves the bathroom, because other than that, the whole rest of the house has oak floors which have just been refinished, which wasn't cheap. I'm not going to take a chance on getting water spots from drippy laundry on those, no ma'am! So, until I get the dryer, I will limit my wash to what will dry overnight on hangers hooked over the shower-curtain rod.

Yeah, sounds like it would be hard to fit any drying racks there. But your remodeling is turning your place into a palace! Really, what you are doing sounds awesome. During winter, with the heat on, my jeans are dry by the next day, so it has worked out ok for me. Right now though, Molly (our dog) is in the laundry room, so I am hoping my clothes are not smelling like a dog!!! But they are up high, so she is not next to them. We have another month to keep her inside, and by then it may be so cold outside that she may have to stay inside longer. She is an outside dog, and her brother Maverick misses her soooo much. BUT the vet said to keep her inside in a small area, and alone, so we are trying to do what is best for her. She gets her next big injection on Monday, for the heartworms.

I am constitutionally incapable of drying anything by air. For some reason, even outside on a nice summer day, they come back in stiff as a board. Our jeans will stand up by themselves. I've tried everything, less detergent, more fabric softener, partially dry outside and finish in the dryer. Nothing works.

Hi Tish, don't worry about the 6 letter word. I did the same thing when I joined this thread a month or so ago. It's really cool though. We get to learn a bit about each other while playing our game.

Hey Curve, you're a Vegan? I like my veggies but not without my meat. Sorry. Does vegan mean no eggs cheese or milk too? I never get it straight. Glad to heat you got a good night's sleep finally. I am also doing household chores today, but when I got up this morning (not tired for once) I put on my pajamas and said I'm not getting out if them all day!

I got new Lagostina cookware for Christmas, which are in the dishwasher right now, and I am looking at the STACK of pots, pans and lids I will be passing down to my daughters.

Kat, i am with ya on the wine and meat! Throw in a few beers and I am a happy camper. I saw the backside of 160 lbs many years ago, but I'm 5'10" so it doesn't look too bad.

CC, haven't heard from you in a bit. Hope all is okay.

    Okay, laundry calls. Ttyl.

@Red, yes, vegan means no animal products of any kind—no honey, no dairy, no eggs. Thorough vegans also eliminate anything that uses animal products during processing, even if the finished product doesn't contain any of that animal material. I don't know for sure, but I would guess vegans also don't wear wool clothing and I would be very surprised indeed if they wear leather shoes! But I'm only a part time vegan, because I eat fish or meat every once in a while, I use chicken bouillon when I make soup or other dishes, and I do wear wool & leather. I really can't claim to be any more than a half-baked, part-time vegan.

I also find that air-dried clothes are pretty stiff. The t-shirts and stuff soften up pretty quickly once I put them on, but I bet my jeans would be able to stand up by themselves too, and towels I don't even want to think about how scratchy they might be!

I've washed the knives and forks, and there's a load of laundry in the washer. Now I think I'm going to slack off for a while, then lunch, and maybe try a bit of a walk afterwards.

Yes, outside air-dried clothes seem stiff, but I haven't found that with drying them inside. Wonder why? Never thought about that before! Only problem is, if lint ends up getting on my clothes, especially a black item of clothing, then it stays there, versus ending up in the lint catcher if using the dryer. Ok, we got off of writing about food and drink, but now we are on clothes....LOL. What plans do you all have for New Years (hmmmmm....how to write about that without mentioning food or drink or clothes)?

That's easy! On New Year's Eve I watch movies all night. I used to rent them. That was back in the days when it seemed like there was a video store on every block. Now I get them from the library. Speaking of which, maybe I better go there this afternoon. I have to stay home Monday because the inspector is coming, and I think the library here might be closed on Tuesday.

I didn't think of it before but putting a drying rack in the back bedroom would also mean cat hair on all the clothes. Luthien is Siamese-colored, so she has a hair that will show up on any garment I own!

Sounds to me like you're going to end up just drying your clothes in your potential dryer till spring Curve. I have two cats, Honey, who is a 20 yr old Calico and Mulligan a 2 year old rescue cat and boy do they fling hair around.  Lol. Movie watching on New Year's Eve sounds like fun. What kind of movies do you like?

Kat, we are just playing cards with our niece and nephew on NYE. I will, however, be making canape's and some nibbles and of course, my world famous taco dip with the matching scoop nachos. (oops, back to food again) Then we will watch the CLOCK tick toward midnight flipping back and forth on the TV between New York and the apple decending and Niagara Falls, which is usually a better show. What are you doing that evening?

Hahaha, good word CCFW! Yes, I have noticed my clothes are lasting forever, whereas my DH's wear out quicker, since his go in the dryer.

Red, we will be at the casinos for NYE (hoping to be lucky), and have free tix to a concert and will have free gourmet food and drinks. Can't beat that! Plus we will stay there (free), so won't have to be out driving with all the drunks. I either like to stay at home, or stay in a hotel when we go out to celebrate.

Where are Sheila and Maddy? Hope everyone is doing ok. I am able to write now (betwn tears) but when my DD1 gets into the actual treatments and gets the feeding tube, etc., I am not sure how much I will be online.

CC - Yay! Good to hear from you. How do you get rid of the stiff clothes when you hang them out. Like I said, everything I hang out is stiff and scratchy.

How have you been doing? Did you have a lovely Christmas? How is your health? I feel very LUCKY with mine, in spite of swelling and some pain. Otherwise, I have avoided every cold and flu bug floating around. Go figure.

Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year!

CC, when you lived on the farm was it your chore to pluck the chickens for dinner? Or were they just for laying eggs, not for eating?

I remember as a kid my dad would get a chicken and then *you know what* and next thing I knew, it was hanging from a tree to get all the blood out. YUCKO. I prefer to just buy it already cut up at the store and plunk it on the conveyor belt to pay for it. (Looks like Red and I both used "lucky" at about the same time! lol). I also remember all the frogs he would get from the creek below our house, in the gully....then he would do whatever he did before skinning them, then they would be on the counter and their reflexes  lasted a long time, so it would look like they were jumping. Bad visual to still have!!!

My dad used to go duck hunting back in the day. He used to hang his poor headless ducks from a PLANK suspended between the overhead pipes on the basement. Ewww in way too many levels for me.

I am a city girl although I like to live on the outskirts so that I can have a bigger piece of property to grow my gardens on. I will not be slaughtering anything that hits my table except for carrots. I'm with Wahine, I like it prepackaged, from a store.

A casino? Free hotel? Where on earth does that happen? I want on board with that! Not that I am much of a gambler. Don't trust me that much. I've seen too many walk a dangerous road with gambling.

Anyway, getting ready to go to my SIL's for a family wingding, so everybody have a great day!

Oh yeah Red, we do go to the casinos often, we do ok, usually end up even or ahead a bit. My DH gambles more than I do, but he is very careful with it. So we get the free rooms, steak house dinners, vip rooms for free drinks, etc. Not sure when we can go back, so trying to take advantage of it while we can. Depends on how my DD1 does, with those horrid treatments. Good luck to your DD this week too, hope she gets some good news from the dr.

All this talk about chickens, ducks, and frogs....ok....more food talk...do any of you use panko as breading? IT works well, but I rarely cook things with breading on them! Needed a word, so thought of that one.

An early Happy New Year to you wonderful girls!!!

Yup, use panko the few times a year that it works, can't remember which recipe.

Wahine, love the new avatar! Wishing you much happiness in the coming year!

Still trying to catch up with everyone new, memory is having probs lately.

After New Years, have a birthday I'd rather forget. Reminds me that we would get a spank on our b-days when we were little. Did anyone else?

I hated those birthday spanks (we called them bumps) and was caught between run away and take em like a grown up - don't cry.

When I was little my mom made be a cake with a barbie doll standing in a princess dress and the skirt was the cake. She decorated it with sparklers and brought it out to the table. I was enthralled until a SPARK landed on the back of hand and made me cry. Poor mom, so not what she expected.

Oh Red, my mom made me the most beautiful doll cakes too....since I love frosting, the more detailed she made the dress, the more frosting there was. We didn't have sparklers though. One of the worst smells ever is the stink of burning flesh. But I am thinking that the spark that landed on your hand would not have burnt you TOO much! Hope not, anyway.

edit: we used to go to the skating rink too...for a birthday party it was either the skating rink or a movie, with friends. I was born on my brothers birthday (5 yrs later), so my mom would have us take turns. One year my party would be at home and my brother could take his friends somewhere, next year I could take my friends somewhere. I don't know how she did it....2 special cakes too, that were very different!
