If you are still hungry after having a snack at the cafe, you can go to a sit-down restaurant and have a real feast. That lamb you mentioned a few days ago sure sounds good. But wait! I'm supposed to be (mostly) a vegetarian now. Does the cuisine of Iceland have any notable vegetable dishes? So far north, I don't imagine they can produce much more than root vegetables on the island. No home-grown tomatoes, that's for sure....at least not without a heated greenhouse.

@CCFW, silly me! I forgot that Iceland has all that geothermal activity with hot springs and steam coming out of the ground all over the place, not to mention the volcanoes.

No, I don't have such a good reason for forgetting. I don't send out Christmas cards and my family has mostly stopped giving gifts—we all have enough "stuff" already and some of us are trying to cut back. The only thing I'm doing in preparation is trying to figure out how to steam a Christmas pudding in my slow cooker. Ordinarily I would have baked fruitcakes the day after Thanksgiving, but since my oven isn't hooked up yet I need to find an alternative this year. Yesterday I bought a ring-shaped pan at the thrift store for the pudding. I still need to check that it will fit in the cooker. If so, tomorrow is the day. Or maybe I will get my act together and do it today. We had a little snow overnight and the road is still icy, so I won't be going anywhere in my car. The temperature today is predicted to stay below freezing point, and I think tomorrow also. I hope it thaws by Sunday as I was planning to go up to Seattle and will have to postpone that trip if it is still icy out.

Hi girls!! Got home yesterday, but so much has happened since we left just 8 days earlier. My DD who is 38 and was dx with tongue cancer the end of May (when we were in Paris and Prague) had a recurrence. Its so awful, when first dx, she had very invasive surgery on her tongue which took weeks to recover from, and couldn't eat, etc. Then she had surgery a couple of months ago(?) or month and a half ago on her neck (incision from ear to middle of neck) to remove all lymph nodes from that side. Well she had her check up last week and had another bad place, so had biopsy and they had to cut out a long "runner" of cancer. So this time he went so far to the back of her tongue he didn't stitch it all up because he said it could get too tight. Poor dear I hated to have been overseas BOTH times. She can't eat and its hard to talk and she said her tongue is swollen like a balloon. I will see her today and made some soup yesterday so she can maybe have the broth if we strain it. This time it looks like she will need rads which can be very debilitating, when done to the mouth and tongue. Prayers are very much appreciated! Also, our dog Molly (sister of Maverick, in my avatar, but she is not only half English Springer Spaniel, but half Cocker Spaniel, so much smaller than he), had bad reaction to the heartworm injection while boarding at the vets....they almost lost her. Glad she was there, as the vets did xrays, tests, and put her on more meds...she couldn't even stand, so am glad they were able to monitor her in the hospital side. She is doing better, and at home now, but we still have to keep her isolated and still.

OK, Iceland....very cold, very windy, very dark, very snowy, very icy! The Blue Lagoon was awesome on our last day, on the way to the airport. BUT they said the walkway to the water was heated...ummmmm....nope.....was covered with ice and snow, and by then you are barefoot, so very cold. Water was awesome, I made sure not to get my hair wet so I wouldn't have to wash it there, but it was so steamy my hair not only got wet from steam in the air, but then turned to ice!!! My DH said it looked funny, all white ice all over my hair. Loved the people of Iceland, and enjoyed the local fish, lobster soup, fresh hailbut grilled skewers, etc. Didn't have many meats though.....when I ordered the lamb soup at a popular local place, there was hardly any lamb in it. Wanted to try their local fresh lamb, but the fish was so good, we kept going back for that! Weird when it would be pitch dark till afternoon some days, so my DH just wanted to go back to sleep after coming up from breakfast! One morning he woke me up at 2am; he looked at his watch and thought it was 7:30 am (it was upside down!), so he made us coffee, we took our morning pills, and were ready to go down to breakfast till we noticed his error! Funny.

Hope everyone on this thread is doing well! Nice to be back home, and I will be glad to finally see my daughter today. Hugs to you all!

Hi, Kat. Welcome home. I've been sayin prayers for your DD and your little Molly and dd2 who lost her beloved pet.

Glad you had a good time in Iceland, seems like you only left yesterday. Although walking barefoot on ice doesn't sound like fun. Brrrr. Guess Iceland isn't the place for us cuz I love fish but my DH definitely doesn't. He doesn't care for lamb either, and for him, eating well is a necessity on vacation.

    How's your cold doing? Under control finally? We missed you, glad you're home. {{{{huggles}}}}

Thanks for the welcome home, and for your prayers, Red! Well, some of the delicacies in Ireland are also: Puffin, Horse, and Whale....you think your DH would like those? It broke our hearts to hear they eat Puffin, they are just too cute. And horses too....wouldn't be able to eat them either. And everything is quite expensive there....other than food which has 7% tax, it is 25% tax on clothes, liquor, etc. We took TOO much luggage, and there were stairs everywhere, so it was quite cumbersome. I even had TWO suitcases nested thinking I would be buying things to come back, but didn't find much to buy, so that was heavy and not needed! My DH loves food so much, so I was glad we found the fish was so fresh and so good there. Yeah, my cold is nearly gone, just a little cough left. THANKS again! Hugs backatcha!!!

OOPS! Shocked What's funny too, is that half the time I am SAYING "Ireland" instead of "Iceland". OK, my last word was "meats" and is your word now "meant"? I need some housecleaning teams as I am not sure how I am going to clean my home as well as my parents home before they return. Plus, my DD with the recent surgery could use some housecleaning too (well not just some, but a LOT!).

Where are Maddy and Sheila??? Did you get to go to Seattle, Curve?

Yes, I was able to go to Seattle yesterday. It is still cold, but it didn't snow any more, so the roads were bare and dry by Sunday. It's supposed to warm up a little later in the week and I'm glad of it. I'm fed up with my feet feeling cold all the time.

I need to do some housecleaning too. >>Sigh<< Sometimes it seems as if all my efforts do no more than smear the dirt around. Ugh, I think I have the glums from this chilly weather. Pay no attention to my griping. Kitchen cabinets are scheduled to come this Thursday and the contractor will be coming back next Monday to put them in. Then finally I can unpack my dishes and everything and even be able to park my car in the garage. That will cheer me up, I'm sure.

I'm still here, just a bunch of cr*p going on. But first..

Welcome Red and CC-from-W! This is a fun thread, very creative, not like a lot of other games.

Wahine, so glad you got to have a good time away! Sounds like the timing is off, that when you're away enjoying some relaxation, your DD has medical issues. That's not fair to either of you. I just don't understand things some times.

Curve, I think you're getting the same bad weather that we are. Chilly and raining, winter came on forcefully. Hoping your cabinets come in soon, that they are BEE-YOU-TEA-FULL and you enjoy them! Just please be careful lifting and organizing.

As for me, sorry I've just been lurking a while. Seems like I'm having SE's from the Tamoxifen - it appears to be affecting my thinking and thought processing. Had me really concerned for a couple weeks (maybe Alzheimer's like Mom?) but getting info from other threads that it may be the Tami. I was avoiding posting anything more than a word or two, a sentence at most, I ran out of steam mentally so quickly. I don't see my MO for over a month, so have made an appt to see PCP next week. Then, when I figuring out modifications to not lose my mind, my ipad started doing really strange things - like continually logging me off after only a couple minutes, very annoying. Finally got the new cell, and it's difficult to type on the on-screen keyboard, very frustrating as I make LOTS of mistrakes.

Oh Maddy, I am so glad you posted, but hate what you are going through. Dang Tamoxifen....hate you have to be on it, because of the SE's...hope your PCP can think of something to help. I was worried about you, and rightly so. (((Maddy)))

It was so weird in Iceland (whew, I didn't type Ireland! lol) with so much darkness, almost a celebration when the beams of light would come through! Sometimes just for a couple of hrs, sometimes not at all, sometimes would be light several hours. The street lights were on 24/7 while we were there. Then they have almost total light during summer months. Have to use black-out draperies to be able to sleep. I asked someone how they get used to that, but they said they didn't know anything else....well duh I should have thought of that! IT is a hard life, but with all the ice and cold, they also have the HOT water from thermal springs running under their homes, so it is very cheap to heat their homes, and get hot water too.

@2TA, I don't have to move the cabinets myself!! That would definitely be more than I could tackle. I will be so glad when I finally have a real kitchen again. I did succeed in steaming the Christmas puddings. Today I see my oncologist and will ask how strictly I need to avoid alcohol while on taxol. If she says "a little bit now and then is OK" I will start watering the puddings with spirits. That's what I do with the fruitcakes and the recipes are really very similar. When I helped my mom move out of her house, I kept some of the open bottles of liquor for this very purpose. Mom & I are invited to Christmas dinner with my younger brother's in-laws, who live quite nearby, and I plan to take the pudding with me. I even have some brandy to pour over it and set on fire. Bwahahahaha!

Side effects are the pits! I hope your PCP can relieve them, and/or your onc put you on a different med that beats down any sneaky cells, but doesn't mess with your brains like the tamoxifen has been.

I've never been to Iceland or Norway but I did go to Ireland when I was a munchkin. I liked it - so very green with mosses on the rock walls. Really pretty back then.

I grew up I in a steel town so the only green stuff I saw was in the ravine behind our home. Spent a lot of hours wandering through the trees. Don't live there anymore but I really miss the water. So I bought a house with a swimming pool. Best investment ever! All the kids were always home, usually with their friends.

The kids are all married or have a sig other now with kids of their own. Kinda miss that time in my life.

@RedReading, there was a creek behind the house I lived in during junior high & high school. It was channelized for flood control, but if you walked upstream a long way, past many houses and the golf course, eventually it became a more natural creek. I wonder if it is still like that all these years later, or if there is no more natural part of it left. This was in California so it was relatively open, grassy country, not a forested area thick with trees. (You didn't bold your new word, but I assume it was steel, which is one letter different from beets.)

Maybe it's time for a trip down memory lane, via Google maps!

Speaking of memory lane, when I was a little girl, my hair was coppery red. It made for all the usual problems red hair has for a young person, it also made for a bunch of bravery I probably could have done without. I never turned down a dare. I always got caught - pretty easy to recognize - when we all did something wrong.

The biggest thing I remember about my hair though, had nothing to do with being bad. I was trying to help my mom. She had broken her arm when she fell from a ladder while painting the bathroom ceiling and couldn't do much. I was about 11 and decided I'd help by doing the laundry. So I loaded up our wringer washer, wash the clothes, then started to put them through the wringer before the rinse cycle.

Well you guessed it - one long tress of my coppery hair entered the wringer with a shirt. My poor mom thought I was dying or something, I made such a racket. ORaces down the stairs and rescues me. Also had to help finish the load since I wouldn't go near the washer. Well, I tried.

tress - sorry I can't bold on my cell

Thanks for the good wishes! Finding out that STRESS (oops that's 6 letters, but I wanted to work it into the post!) really affects my thinking. Been under that a whole lot lately - that's a whole other post! Lol! Anyway, brain back on track, I would love to have a glass of wine to help at night, but I will steer clear until I get the go-ahead from the Onc or PCP.

Curve, I didn't think you pick up the cabinets, so silly I wasn't clear, there's that brain thing again! I was referring to when you put your items and treasures into the cupboard, not too many at a time, be careful on a step stool, reaching, well you get the idea.

At mom and dad's - I hear mom in my things in the back room, going to post before I lose this. BBL

Oh yes, we had a nice heavily treed area where I grew up too. We lived on the ridge inland from Pearl Harbor, and up the road was a heiau (ancient healing temple, really just some rocks and medicinal trees), as well as a forest. We hiked so much there all the time (my bro even killed a wild boar there). But now there are paved roads and you can just drive way back there. Sad. There was a bamboo forest there too, not sure if it is still there. Lots of guava trees and wild cherry trees (yum), which are still there. I picked a lot of regular guavas and strawberry guavas there in Sept and enjoyed them! Below our house was a gully with a stream, and we loved hiking there too. Was fun to go up the other ridge and look back at our house. AND the area my parents used to take us to, and drive way back through the pineapple fields and camp on a peninsula of a lake (we had a permit), is now a housing subdivision! Couldn't believe it, there were NO houses for miles, waaaay back in the good old days. OH yeah Red, my best years were when my kids were still at home too!

This is the lake now.....with all the houses, was just nothing but rows and rows of pineapple fields, as well as just trees and serenity....

Well, sometimes we need nerves of steel to get through all that we are dealing with right now! OK, that will work!

Boy I'm looking out the window and there is both snow and rain coming down. I think the technical word is SLEET but I'm not sure. This weather sure isn't cooperating like when I was a child. We used to have 4 seasons and knew what to expect with each. Sigh.

Now you've got it RedReading! If you can't make your word bold, just use all CAPS.

I did go on google maps, and now I wish I hadn't. It looks like the creek now goes only a few blocks upstream from where I used to live, and then is in a culvert from there on. >>sigh<< It wasn't some pristine wild river, but still it seems a pity that it is now completely covered up.

Well, it's almost ten o'clock. Time to do the dishes, then dessert, then off to sleep.

Wahine, I love your travel stories! At the rate I'm going, will never see those places myself so I do so enjoy the info about the trips. Is there some place you haven't been?

Red, my DH was a copper top when he was young. I've seen photos, he's more a strawberry blond now (that is, what's left). I remember the bad weather when I was growing up in New York, so different now in California. My blood has sure thinned, it's getting cold here (by our standards) down to the low 40's at night and when I wake up. My chest tightens up in the cold and sometimes it's truly painful. I could never live in the cold climates again! (However, thinking of going to the mountains in March for a retreat -- the two other times I went, snow storms came in and they had us leave early).

Was right earlier - Mom was in my things, thinking they belonged to her. I have to keep an eye on her as she walks off with things and of course, can't remember where she puts them (or even what they are or how to use them). She got angry the last time I was here, that I was in the guest room. Didn't know who my dad was a short time ago, she went looking for him and he was trying to explain that he was her husband. Very sad. So, will probably get little sleep tonight

Red - glad you figured out that upper case works! That's what I had to do before they made the big changes to BCO not too long ago.

Darn I wish I had never learned how to spell the word cancer. Now it is too prevalent. I went with my daughter to her post-op appt and to see the path report. It is not good, not good at all....been crying since I got home. Sorry to be a downer, but that is how I feel right now. Thanks for listening...and I did figure out a way to do a new word.

I am sorry to hear about your DD's path report also. I pray that she will have successful treatment and not find it too debilitating. Now take an opportunity to spoil yourselves a little with some treats or watch a movie you both like, or anything you enjoy—put some pleasant experiences in your "happiness bank" to balance the difficult things that may be coming as part of treatment.

Another thing, how you feel is how you feel. No apology required. Remember what you told me when a bunch of hard things happened all in a short time, plus I had such a tough time deciding about chemo? Same goes for you! (((wahine)))
