Sheila, is it really you? WooHoo, so glad to see you here....I have been worried about you. Hope things are going well, and please come back and play this game with us! Thanks so much for the hugs, I really appreciate them!
While I was reading during my DD's chemo today, there was an article about making the camera lens on your phone better. It was weird though, as it involved having to strip the lens from a dvd player and attach it over the lens on the camera on the phone. I wouldn't do that, but its a real article, and enabled me to think of a word to use!

@RedReading, that's right, I have no I-pad, I-pod, smart phone, portable CD player or e-reader like a Kindle or Nook. I do have a little cassette player, but no earphones for it. Anyway, I think audiobooks are no longer published on cassette, just like movies are no longer published on videotape. I download audiobooks from the library and listen to them at night on my computer to help me sleep, or get books on CD to listen to in the car while I drive. But I can't listen either of those ways in the infusion room. {teehee} If there was a Mrs Gloom-n-doom where I am getting my treatments I would probably buy one to block her out, but so far I haven't run into that problem. I usually just take a book or knitting or read the magazines that are there. Speaking of treatment, I have Zometa #2 coming up tomorrow and I'm a little nervous about it, because I still don't know whether it was Zometa or a bug that clobbered me so completely at the beginning of the month. I am a little afraid I will end up flat on my back again. Fortunately my friend who came down on my birthday has a work appointment in town tomorrow so she is going to come and see me.
@wahine, I have some hats I knitted myself out of 100% cotton yarn, and they are soft and non-irritating. I also have one extremely soft hat that my SIL knitted for me, but I don't know for sure what it's made out of. If I had to guess, I would say it is one of the yarns made of recycled silk from sari manufacture, but I'm not sure. It's fluffy. I finally got all my Christmas thank you notes mailed today and one was to my SIL asking her what the hat is made of, and also how to clean it. Sometimes both the cotton and SIL hats are too warm and make my head and face sweat when I wear them indoors. If I am home alone I just take it off for a while to let my head cool down, but I don't know what I'll do in the summer. Maybe I need to make some out of a lighter-weight yarn. And as I mentioned in an earlier post, they don't keep the back of my neck warm at all.
@sheila888, c'mom back and play.
And now that I have nattered on for a bit I will just tell you my word, because I don't know how to work around to using it in this post. The word is strap.

Thanks for the info on your hats, Curve. Sounds like a regular cotton yarn would be soft, but I can see whats out there, and look at the other type you mentioned too. While I was thinking about it, I searched for info on soft chemo hats, and found this website of a woman (Melissa) who makes soft hats for chemo pts and sends them out free, in honor of her late stepmom (Madelyn). I believe she makes them out of fleece and somehow does not have a seam, or is able to put a seam where it won't irritate the skin. I copied this:
Free Handmade Chemo Hats for ladies going through chemo. Each hat is made in a smoke free and pet free home. Please read more about Madelyn Hats....
Mission:
Provide chemo hats to women fighting cancer!
Description:
My name is Melissa Conboy. These Madelyn Hats are made in loving memory of my step-mom, Madelyn Mramor. She passed away in December of 2009 from Ovarian Cancer. Each Madelyn Hat is handmade from a pattern she made to sew her own chemo hats. They are free and ship for free!
This is her email to request a hat... KeepEmCleanCovers@hotmail.com
But I still want to look for a pattern and try to knit one. Just have to remember how, but I am sure there are enough videos out there to get me strarted. Also hoping to pick out a new treadmill tomorrow, and hopefully I won't go splat on my back, when using it!

Curve, um wow. I went through total technology withdrawal when I was on vacation. Even tho I got on the computer there, it was DIAL UP!!!!!! Sooooooooo sloooooowww. I would post a message, then sit and watch the timer count down and pray my note went through before I ran out of time. I have an entire house full of books, always been a reader, that I don't touch any more cuz I can read on my kobo or phone.
I hope the Zometa wasn't the cause of your illness last time. There have been an awful lot of bugs around and I know people who've had colds, flu even STREP. So keep your chin up and your thoughts positive. (unless you are one of those ladies who hates to be told that, in which case, think however you'd like)
Those hats sound cool. Definately wouldn't want to ruin them in the wash.
Well, back to my tub now.

Ok, this word had probably been used, so I'll allow myself to repeat it.
About hats: I crochet and have lots of yarn. My cancer center distributes hats (free of charge, they're in a basket). I'll have to find the web site. They are very picky which type of yarn can be used, only the softest ones are allowed. So, I followed the steps of the instructions and made a couple hats. Now, I'm not the greatest of crocheters, I only do the easy ones. I would be happy to make one for you a Curve and one for your DD Wahine.
Red, I haven't forgotten about the Susan G. Komen info, I will try to get that to you.
Curve, thanks for the reminder about your home renovations. The outside can wait. Am glad that little will require someone to come inside your home and bring in nasty germies.

@RedReading, I had dial-up internet until I moved in with my mom in May 2012. I didn't know for sure that broadband would be available where I moved after retirement, and I thought it would be worse to have high speed and go back to dial-up, than just to stay with the slow connection until I knew what would be available at the new location.
My lack of phone etc isn't tech withdrawal, because I didn't buy the gadgets in the first place. I did have a cell phone years ago, but decided the amount of use I got out of it wasn't worth what it was costing me. The phone I have now is my late father's phone and my mom keeps up the subscription because I really have the phone more for her sake than my own. I only use it a little bit, when I'm picking up someone at the airport or the like. I'm very leery of signing up for something like a cell phone plan, because the expense never stops once you start. Maybe that's a legacy of having been un- & under-employed for a long time years ago and having barely enough money to get by. I make an exception for Internet access. I could go to the library and use their computers for free, but I spend enough time online to feel that cost is worthwhile, and besides the library is closed nights & Sundays. So no cell phone, no Netflix, no websites you have to subscribe to. I have thought of getting an e-reader, just to cut down on the amount of storage space I need for books. But that may just be another aspect of my inner cheapskate. I haven't actually checked, but it wouldn't surprise me if an e-reader or tablet, plus e-books to replace the paper books I have, would cost less than enough good-looking bookcases to store all my volumes. In my old house, lots of the books lived in boxes in the garage most of the time, unless I brought a particular one inside to read. I want to eliminate that here, at least for the books that are available in e-versions. I have some old ones that I'll have to keep the actual volume if I want the book at all.

Curve, good for you to have self-discipline. I was like that in my single days, not so much since married. With all the posts you do, I'm grateful you have Internet access.

Wow, Maddy that is so nice of you to offer to crochet a hat for Curve and my DD. Amazing! But we'll need to see if you have the time, as I know you are so busy too. My gf in high school used to crochet cute little animals for us, like penguins, etc., but all I did with crochet was learn to do just a chain. I did knit a sweater, but that was in high school, like, ummmmm.....yesterday. Uh-huh. Don't know if I can re-teach myself how to knit, or learn to crochet.
I know we won't be traveling much for awhile, so we can help my DD. It really was hard to cancel our 2 wks in Madeira, but I knew in my heart that we would rather be here if needed. We might get to keep our tix to TX next month to see my other DD, since that is a short trip. Not sure when we can revisit the casinos, and try blackjack and slots.

Crocheting is my therapy, I usually make afghans. This year, I made lotsa (ha, not really a word, but that's what came to kind) crochet stars for friends (like over 70 of them), thinking I would need them for holiday parties, but that didn't happen. So hats are no big deal. Before BCO, did a lot of reading, now not sure I can remember the plots of what I read.
0 -
@2TA, do you make afghans or for your own use and gifts? Have you ever made one for Warm Up America? I think there is a thread here on bco about making an afghan for charity but I don't know how active it is right now. My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was very young, I think even before I knew how to read. I learned to knit later on, from books.
I hadn't seen that website with the chemo hat patterns before. There is another website with lots of patterns but most of these are different than I have seen before. I did see a pattern on that website that I like, the one with the "hair" made from loops of yarn. However, it uses worsted weight yarn which I fear may be too warm. I wonder if there is a similar pattern, but made with sport weight yarn. (use either word)
P.S. Zometa #2 at 1 PM today. I'm scared. Fortunately my friend is coming to see me.

Oh Curve, we will be with you, ok? Teeny tiny and in pockets or hiding in your purse, or wherever. You may have to look hard to find us, but we are there with you! Praying it all goes well for you, and so glad your other friend will be seeing you too. (((Curve)))
OK, I dug out my old knitting needles....can you believe some were just 65 cents, for aluminum??? But of course I don't have the sizes needed for 2 different hat patterns I found. And it might end up a total disaster, but I'm going to try. Also found my OLD small how to knit booklet. Remember when those were either free or for a low price at fabric shoppes and yarn shoppes?
Awesome about the stars, Maddy! And you made afghans, wow! Have you tried to make a shape like the breast cancer ribbon? I would think the cancer clinics could sell those as fundraisers, or give them to patients. I saw some cute smallish cross-stitched pink ribbons, in silver frames at the chemo/whatever else people have to have infused in them, place.
Well, we may just decide on the treadmill today.....hoping and praying I don't ever fall backwards on one, ever again. Do not want to be all bent over, and have to stoop like a little old lady.
0 -
Curve, please make room for me in your pocket. So glad your friend is with you, even with the infusion.
Yes, Wahine, I sure do remember. Came across really ancient stuff moving moms stuff. Good luck with the pattern. Hoping all works out, no frustration or pouts from it. I try to easy uncomplicated projects as it's so much easier for me. Christmas 2012, I crocheting bunches of pink ribbons ornaments to give to my medical team - before I knew about all the uproar of "pinking". I just like to do things because it makes me feel good.good luck with the treadmill.
Gotta run errands today. BBL

Curve, I hope things went well today for you and no SE's from that. I don't want you to have any bouts of sickness, or other problems from it. Let us now how it went.....we couldn't really see anything, down in that dark pocket!
Well I guess its been......ummmmmmm.....40-45 yrs ago since I knitted anything? Anyway, Thank God for the internet, and for search engines and youtube. I couldn't even remember how to cast on, and was able to see videos on how to knit. AND I had to get circular needles which I had never used, and there was a youtube video about that, too.
We bought a treadmill at Sears. It was a no-brainer after we were looking at one we liked at Sports Authority. The salesgirl was really promoting a smaller one that is identical to what she has, so I lifted the deck up (raises up and has a metal small bar that holds it in place). It wouldn't stay up, and when I tried to get it into place, it jammed my thumb between the heavy deck and the side arm. SO then my thumb is sore and bleeding all over the place. Turns out, the bracket holding the bar was NOT attached all the way. So here I am, digging through my purse to find bandaids, which were the small ones. I had to keep finding more to cover it as it cut very deep from below knuckle, almost to tip of thumb. Kept trying to put more bandaids to cover it, and kept bleeding through it. The sales girl SAID NOTHING about it, didn't even offer to get me a paper towel or bandaids or anything. Only said she would make sure someone fixed it. Well....DUH...a child could have gotten seriously hurt if they were next to it. So when we got home, I DID call the store manager and let her know. I think when someone gets hurt in a store because of neglect on the store's part, they should at least try to help them. I wanted them to know that we didn't purchase from them, in part, because of the salesgirls lack of concern. I hope they don't do that to anyone else! Anyway, it does look awful, and is so raw. What is this about me and treadmills this month???? The one we are getting has a power-assist to raise and lower the deck....yay!!! I don't like it down all the time when its not used, as it takes up so much room. Will have to wait till next week for delivery, and we made sure the delivery charge included assembly and getting it UP the stairs!
Ok.....geez I wrote a lot....night night!!!
0 -
Wahine, ouch! Double ouch! I would think the sales clerk would be more concerned, especially with you bleeding so badly. Not great customer relations. Hoping you heal quickly! What will you do now about the equipment?
Curve, hoping you had a wonderful day and got to spend some great time with your friend.
Red, hoping your first week back wasn't too tiring.
CC, where are you?
Wahine, was thinking of you yesterday when I was raking leaves in the back yard, we have a couple hibiscus plants, they remind me of Hawaii, and of you, naturally.
After her your story, it made me quit feeling sorry for myself. Going to the amusement park in the morning, knowing I'll be going a roaster coaster, maybe a ride on boats too. My hair was really long and afraid it would get too messed up so I got it cut. The silly person didn't hear my request and cut it way too short, told her I use a round brush and dryer, it's not long enough to do that. Oh, well, I'll get thru it.
0 -
I hope your hair grows fast, Maddy! Mine does, so when they cut mine too short I don't worry about it because it gives me more time in between haircuts.Thats the hardest part for me, finding time to get it cut. I hope you have a wonderful, funderful day at Knott's!! Now if you get soaked on the boat ride, you both might not have to have baths tonight. (I know....lame, but it was the word I thought of quickly! lol).
They charge $125 for delivery and setup, but that includes taking out the old equipment (at least thats what the salesperson said!). Hope they really do that. We took the large top part off and DH cut the wires, so they can carry it out in 2 parts and then it should fit through the door. I don't know why the upstairs doors are so narrow, but the smallest width, trim to trim is just 29.5 inches. Most treadmills are 36" across the widest top part, so we'll need to make sure they assemble it upstairs! AND this cost less than the one we have that we bought 10 yrs ago!!! We chose a NordicTrack, for some reason it was the one my DH liked the best. For me, it did have the strongest fan (a must!) and was easiest to lift with the assist. The other one seemed like the assist was a waste of time, as I couldn't tell the difference. And sometimes we put an extra Q inflatable bed in that room if we need more beds for g'kids, so I like to make sure it can go up and out of the way (the deck folds up). Ours does too, but sooooo heavy.

Hi CC! You are right....or should I get a treadmill that heats up, so it can help my injuries??? LOL. Well, that all happened in January, so I am hoping February is a new start, new beginning, and that treadmills will like me again. It will prolly be scary though the first time I use it. Maybe I should attach a pillow to my back in case it throws me? When we mentioned that to different salespeople, they had never heard of that happening. Of course, they were young, but I wonder if it does happen a lot? Ours was 10 yrs old, maybe we should look at the motor under the cover every so often and make sure it is attached and the motor belt is on,etc. When we looked at ours, the belt was off the motor, and the motor had broken off from where it was attached. I think that is what caused it to surge up and flip me....unless when I fell it caused that? I don't know.

@2TA, yes, it was a pleasant visit, but I was pretty tired after she left, maybe because I didn't get a nap, and also did some cleanup and put a clean sheet on the bed (well sheets really, but that's six letters). Then today I walked further than I had done last week, but was pooped afterwards. I lay down and watched a movie, then got up and made lunch and read the new messages on the forum and now I'm pooped again. I guess lying there awake is not as restful as an actual nap.
Thanks for all being in my pockets yesterday. So far I have no fever from the Zometa, and by the day after my first treatment my temperature was above 100 degrees. So, I guess I either had a bug or a bad reaction to getting taxol and Zometa on the same day. OK, that's all for now.
0 -
Curve, so happy you had a pleasant time, it could have been much worse. Hoping you regained some energy since your last post. The weather cooperated today?
Wahine, hoping the new equipment works well and makes you feel better. My poor exercise bike just sits and seems to be a tease to get me to use it. I even tried setting a DVD player near it as an incentive but it doesn't call me loud enough.
CC, I like you just posted the word. Have wanted to do that, would be easier than trying to twist it into a story.
Enjoy Super Bowl Sunday everyone!
0 -
@2TA I'm a bit more tired today, but that's maybe because of no nap yesterday and a longer walk today, or maybe it's the Zometa. It can cause fatigue too. But now I have two whole weeks with no treatments, so maybe I will be able to make some headway before my next Doxil. Trying to increase stamina while getting treatments that sap your energy is like swimming upstream. Please encourage me not to gripe, gripe, gripe! I think it's becoming a habit and it's a bad one to get into. Hey, maybe one of you can go down to the courthouse and get the judge to issue a cease-and-desist order, so the "majesty of the law" can help me mend my ways. Nighty night.
0 -
Curve, great to see you hanging around! I simply will not allow you to stop griping if you need to its so much better to get it all out that keep it all bottled up! There are so many cases to prove you need to purge the feelings, not keep them. So gripe away, my friend!
Maybe it's a good thing you're tired: you're to increase physical activity so that's a good thing....
My last post, I got totally side tracked. Was going to say DH and I went to Knott's Berry Farm today for BC survivor event: special (healthy) breakfast, lots of photo ops, a special ride on a roller coaster before the park opened, then the rest of the day to ourselves. Wish I could post the photo of Snoopy and me. DH bought this small stuffed animal, a bird, actually and eagle which makes noises. DH got it for the cats, to tease them (that's originally how I wanted to use that word from brain fart), but neither of them could care less.
Are you still there Curve? After we got home, I took a long nap, so will probably be awake for a while.

Hi Maddy! Glad you had such a good time, would love to see a picture! I'm still up, its after 1:30 am here, so am heading to bed very shortly. I JUST finished knitting a cap, and have learned so much. Like I really need a 12" or 16" circular needle to do a hat, not a 29" circular. It was too hard, as it was stretching it too much, plus then I was supposed to have double needles and had to improvise. Ended up with more stitches somehow, then later had dropped one every so often! lol. I think it I get the correct needles, I could now make a decent one. My DD1 carved a "hittie" doll, at a doll carving class last year (4 days), and the doll is based on a story from 100 yrs ago. She has made some clothes for her, and it would be neat if I could knit some small capes for her doll sometime.
Hope you can find some energy, Curve! And like Maddy said, please gripe when you feel like it! We all need to at times, and it can help a lot.
OK, I am tired, shoulders and neck are so sore from doing this knitting for hours. Night, night grls!
0 -
Good night, Wahine! Yay, you got a hat done! Smaller needles would help, even better is crocheting, more difficult (but not impossible) to add or decrease a stitch. I have packs of left over yarn (well, bags, but need the word). Never heard of a hittie, will need to google. When I was much younger, my aunt knitted me lots of clothes for my Barbie, have the case somewhere in the garage.hoping you read this in the morning.
0 -
OOPS didn't spell it right; it is "Hitty". I found a wikipedia article about her: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitty,_Her_First_Hun...
Hers turned out really good, they start with just a block of wood! Has moveable arms and legs. This isn't the one she did, but looks similar to this one.
I tried the hat on and it looks good on...can't see the mistakes that way. At least I can use it as something to show her and see how soft the yarn should be. I need to clean up....there is a scrap (or two) of yarn on the floor! Boy I'm tired, but boy does knitting for hours hurt your shoulders. Yup, it took me hours to make it. Maybe it will be quicker with the right needles. Nighty night.....
0 -
@wahine, congratulations on finishing a cap! Could it be that you are tensing up while you knit? If so, I can understand why you got a cramp in your shoulders after knitting for a long time. You are right that a shorter (12 or 16-inch) circular needle is better for knitting a cap. The longer ones are used for knitting a sweater all in one piece. There is a way to knit a seamless hat on a longer circular or even on straight needles, but it's probably better to get comfortable and relaxed knitting with a short circular needle before you try that. Or you might try a knitting loom. I've never used one, but it sounds really simple. One last hint, if you can find those dropped stitches in your cap, try to fasten them off so they don't run all the way back to your cast on edge. That can be hard to do if you used a fluffy yarn. Big fluffy yarns are sometimes suggested for beginners' knitting projects, because it's possible to finish a small cap or scarf very quickly, since only a few stitches are needed. But it's also very easy to drop a stitch, and hard to find it again if you do, especially if you don't notice until a few rows later. It's much easier to see what you're doing with a smooth yarn. Also, 2TA is right that it's easier not to drop a stitch when crocheting. There are fewer loops to keep track of and you make stitches one at a time, rather than having a whole row of stitches on the needle all at once. But crocheting makes a much thicker fabric than knitting, and it doesn't stretch as much. (I mean working in plain single crochet or half-double crochet—there is also crocheted lace but that's not so good for a chemo cap since the bald scalp would show through the holes in the lace, and the cold drafts would blow through too. But hmmm, maybe a lacier hat for nighttime wear wouldn't make my head sweat....)
And now it's time for me to take my shower and be off to church. See ya later!
P.S. I can't get the link to Hitty's picture to work for me.
0 -
OOPS, I just saw that the image didn't show up, oh well, If you girls want to see what the Hitty doll looks like, a search will turn it up. There are online groups just for the Hitty dolls, its really neat. And my DD and some other ladies, exchange small things for their dolls. Like for Christmas, they all made Christmas decorations and mailed them to the others. Its so cute, they have handmade "yule log cakes", small wreaths, etc. They try to do accessories and decor like it would have been over a hundred years ago. She wanted to return to the doll carving classes this year, but they will be around the time she is almost finished with chemo and rads, and not sure she could make the trip. PLUS, the nurses DO NOT want her to use a carving knife!!! lol
Would be a good idea if you made a soft lace cap, Curve! Right now, she still has all her hair, but I guess she likes to wear a cap since its been cold outside. I never wear them, but she keeps her hair straight and pulled back, so it stays neat. Mine would look awful after wearing a cap. Neat that you and Maddy can crochet. When you mentioned lace, I was also thinking of some beautiful lace lined prams for a baby.
0 -
I love the thought of watching while a baby romps around and has fun. Then back to the lace lined pram. I love making lace. I have been crotcheting for years and got into lace making about 10 years ago. I find it lovely and the patterns are so beautiful. When I was in Cuba I bought a lace shawl decorated with my favourite pineapple pattern. $12 plus a beer. I guess she really wanted a beer. She said 'our secret, ok?' I said of course it is.
0 -
How awesome when $12 and a beer can morph into a beautiful lace shawl! I bet it is lovely. I love pineapples, because of course that was the big money for HI years ago, when we had pineapple fields all over (not nearly as many anymore). So that was the symbol of Hawaii. Well, when I moved to the South, I learned they used the pineapple as the symbol of hospitality. Nice! And its also nice when you buy something you can use, and you love, to remember a certain place.

I always do Kath, every time I go away.
I am now on so many pills that I had to get myself a pill minder so that I would remember what to take when. I was getting confused and having to read the instructions on each bottle before taking them. Now I only have to do it once a week. I cringe when I think of what Big Pharm is making off of me. (sorry it's all I could think of - really sorry to the next person)
Anyway, made a lovely prime rib roast dinner with garlic mashed potatoes and butter peas tonight. It was yummy!
