I like all forms of lace. I have made knitted lace and could probably do crocheted lace too if I had a pattern for it. I even learned how to tat a little bit, although I never got skilled enough to do it without having the instructions for how to make each kind of stitch right in front of me. I also read a book about bobbin lace, but never tried to do it. It's really complicated! There are also several kinds of embroidered lace, but I've never tried to make any of those.

Oh dear, I am behind the times! I hit preview too, but I guess that doesn't reveal when the game has gone onto the next page. I can only think of one word and I'd never get there while writing about lace, so here's the word by itself: marsh.

Thank goodness someone was able to use that nasty word I left behind. I don't want you to think that I am always that harsh, usually I am a kind person. I honestly couldn't think of anything to make out of it. Yay Curve!

I did tatting for a while too but it didn't come together fast enough for me and I had pins all over the place. I've never done bobbin lace but i watched a demonstration one time. Those ladies' fingers flew! The smallest crotchet hook I have ever used was a .25 mm. Do you do tiny crotchet like that too? O wait that would be about a o heck i don't know - 30 cms to a foot. About 2.5cms to an inch soooo , o i give up, i have no idea what that would be in standard instead of metric. Sorry.

Hope everyone is having a good evening! We have had rain, rain, and oh yeah, more rain. Much better than having ice which harms the plants. I can't believe we didn't cover up our large gardenia shrub this winter when it was below freezing for several days (and single digits). We were spoiled with several mild winters, so I don't even think of the plants! They remind us to take care of the 3 "p's", people, pets, and pipes. But they only seem to mention "plants" at the first frost.

@RedReading, 25 mm is about an inch—0.25mm is one-hundredth of that, so 0.25 mm is one-hundredth of an inch.  That's TINY! To use such a small hook, do you have to be able to crochet without actually seeing what you are doing, sort of analogous to being able to touch-type? I've never acquired that skill—I have to look at what I'm doing when I do needlework, and my eyesight is not sharp enough to be able to use such a fine hook.

@wahine, maybe they only remind you about plants on the first frost because if you forget them the first time, they'll be goners by the time the next frost comes around.

Did anyone see the half-time ads?   The Audi one was cute, but I sure wouldn't want something like this to crash into me!! Its funny though....

my SIL wrote back about the extra-soft hat. She doesn't remember the exact name of the yarn, but said it was a synthetic fiber, not reclaimed sari-silk as I guessed. I still want to try a cotton crochet lace one, but alas, they had none of the right kind of yarn at the thrift store. Maybe tomorrow I will go to Michael's and see what they have.

That Audi ad was really strange! If I saw a Doberhuahua coming, I would want to take to my heels, but I doubt that I can run fast enough to escape from them.

So there I am at the mall, and I hate shopping, when suddenly this girl HAILS me from across the way to tell me I left something in the last store.

OK that is pure BS (except for the part about hating shopping) but I had to get my word in.

I so do NOT get people who do retail therapy. If it was me, I would never go to a store. Ever!

That's a cute pic Maddy. You have a beautiful smile girl!!!!

Curve, no I can still see my stitches. I was into really fine work when I did that. Made my mom a tablecloth that rivalled Belgium lace. She loved it. Took me about 4 months so she better. Lol.

That commercial was just plain silly Kath. We Canadians don't get to see the commercials during the Super Bowl. They're actually worried about decreased productivity this week cuz of all the people who will be on YouTube trying to see the commercials.

CC where are you? Hellooooo. CC?

LOL @ Red....I think you missed Maddy's word, "shell", but thats ok, makes it more fun! So, I will continue, from your word "hails". What an awesome tablecloth you made for your mom, Red....yuppers I know she loved it!!! So much work, wow. Funny about the Canucks not doing enough work because of looking up the youtube commercials! Funny. Well, (this is true), I haven't done my nails in a LONG time, but today I bought 3 bottles of nail polish remover. Go figure. I bought a gel kit that has the LED light, and haven't even opened it yet. And this was a few months ago. Auwe! Right now my thumbs are all bandaged up anyway....one from the treadmill incident, and the other got so dry and cracked and when I was knitting I guess I was rough with it as it now has a deep cut and hurts like heck!

Maddy, that is a LOVELY picture!! You look so nice, and happy....must have been such a fun day there!

My DD1 was real sick this morning, so I took my g'son to his class, far away. I keep trying to get stuff done at home when I can, as I want to be available to help her. But for some reason I am NOT getting much done!

Hope your Michaels has a better yarn section than ours did, Curve. They were out of so many needles too, I was very disappointed.

Thanks, Red and Wahine, I probably won't keep that photo there for long. Just saying. (With me and my face because we just walked a long way, not at the pace of a snail either and just as we walked inside the hall, they snapped the photos. I still had my backpack in hand so I'm trying to hide it)

Do you a JoAnn's in your area? They also have a good selection of nice yarns.

Yes, there is a JoAnn's, but Michael's is closer to where I live. There is also a fabric-and-yarn store in between that isn't part of a chain, but I think it's probably more of a source for premium yarns. I just want to get some Speed-cro-sheen or something along those lines. I already have a hook that I think will work with that weigh of yarn. Bye for now.

Really Maddy, your picture is so nice, it makes me smile when I look at it! Such a happy picture.

OH YEAH, we have a JoAnn's and its right by the Michael's I went to, which is also near Hobby Lobby. Why I didn't check those places out, I don't know.  Hope you can find the yarn you want, Curve!

I also forgot that Hancock Fabrics was in the same shopping plaza as Michaels! Auwe! Where oh where did my little brain go?? Maybe I need to de-stress and have a nice cocktail. Perhaps I could have a mojito with some limes.

you still have Hancock Fabrics? They all closed out west many years ago. They didn't carry yarn, just fabric. Ok, thought I had a sentence for my word: slime, but now I can't remember how I was going to get there.

We have 2 or 3 here, and they do well as they are in good shopping centers. Just saw an ad for yarn on sale there, or I wouldn't have thought of them. Ours have nice designer fabric and design services too. Well, its lunch time, have to plan all my meals on this diet!

OH NO, didn't know you are sick, Maddy. So sorry to hear that. Hope it won't linger. Diet is going ok....sorta went off it last night, late. That is my worst time! But I lost 9 lbs in 3 wks, so I am happy about that. In week 4 now. Hoping to slide onto the scale in a few days and see a smaller number! Esp since I didn't do any excersize.

@wahine, since you are thinking of having a cocktail, I assume week 4 is not a teetotal week like last week was. Or was the mojito the "went off last night late"? I walked a half mile again today and worked in my garden for the first time in a long while. I can't remember the last time I did anything out there, it must have been the middle of December, if not before that. I am sadly coming to the conclusion that I have bitten off more than I can chew with this size yard, at least unless I am able to get back onto anti-hormonal treatments. I asked the nurse at my infusion last week and she said the fatigue will probably only increase as long as I am taking Doxil, or I assume any other chemo drug either. I will have to come up with some different plans than what I originally had in mind. I will put on my thinking cap and I'm sure some ideas will come to me. In fact, I have one or two already. OK, now it's time for a little rest after my exertions of this morning. Then lunch, then maybe that trip to Michael's. Or I wonder if Fred Meyer has that kind of yarn. If they do, I could go there and pick up the yarn and a few groceries...

Curve, don't fret about the yard, it will work out. Do you know of responsible young man who might want to help out and make a couple bucks? I know DS cut lawns to earn some extra money. We don't have a Fred Meyer here, never heard of it.

Wahine. Congrats on the weight loss! Especially with all the stress you've been under! I used to not eat under stress, now a big stress eater. I would be so happy to lose 10 pounds, way to go!

Had my lemon water, then juiced some produce, now no appetite at all. I have to cook up some shrimp for dinner for DH but don't know what sides to make with them.

@2TA, I really do need to worry about the yard. Last summer the grass got away from me and was so tall I probably almost got cited for nuisance weeds, and when it got dry in the summer it was a fire hazard. I don't know a "responsible young man", but my next door neighbor has (I think) a riding mower, and I'm thinking of asking him if he will mow my yard in exchange for my buying the gas. In the back I still want to see if I can follow my plan of getting rid of the lawn, but I might need to have the bark blown in instead of buying a truckload and spreading it myself bit by bit. Then I need to see if I can find a mix of native plants to seed on top of the bark, that will self-perpetuate and attract birds and butterflies. I think the original vegetation around this area was some type of grassland, not conifer forest, because it shows on old maps as "Woods Prairie". Then perhaps I can dress things up bit by bit with container plantings or adding shrubs, as my budget and energy level allow.

Fred Meyer is just a big variety store. They have a little of everything......craft supplies, furniture, food, gardening things.....

I will have to let someone else suggest accompaniments for the shrimp. I'm not a big fan of shellfish, so I don't know what goes well with them.

Oh yes, we used to enjoy going to Fred Meyer when we were in WA. AND Target, but now we have 3-4 large Targets in our city alone. Curve, that is such a punch to the face, when you realize you can't do what you want to do, and what you used to be able to do. I am feeling that with my back, and it irks me to no end. I do hope your ideas for solutions will work!! At my previous home,  I put all ground covers and flintstone paths, and remote patio, etc. BUT I did it on my hands and knees with a small hand shovel. That was so dumb of me, because I now have almost no strength in my right hand and wrist. But it did look awesome. The liriope does well here, so I used that a lot. The plain dark green (which is also called monkey grass) as well as the variegated. Stays green all winter, then in the spring you cut it way back to the ground. or to the new buds, and it grows nice and fresh for the next season. I do love all the rhodies up in your neck of the woods....they seem to grow effortlessly there! If plants are too expensive, can you air-layer some that you have, or that a friend may have? I also like palmetto grass and reeds, but not sure those do well in your climate.

    Get well, Maddy!!!!!

@wahine, that's similar to what I have in mind, except I need the basic plantings to be things that will grow from seeds. It's a big area—the lot is 8000 square feet in all, and the house and paved areas cover at most 1000. Most of that is the front and side yard, which I think I will see if I can make a deal for my neighbor to mow at least temporarily, but even for just the back yard it would be pretty expensive to buy enough plants to cover it all, plus I'd have to hire workers to plant them, because it's more than I can do at this point. If it is just a matter of spreading seed around once the bark is in place, I think I can do it myself, or with just a few friends.

Hi all, well I am just a bit bitchy about all the people able to garden right now. Booo. I want to garden too, but mine is under 4 ft of snow. I always have 2 X 2 1/2 ft deer on my front lawn and one of them has disappeared entirely and I SPIED part of the antler of the other poking out of the snow just this morning.

Curve, I'm sure your design will look just beautiful. I've never never had that kind of a yard. With all my grandkids, I occasionally need to shove em out the back door and say, go play. With a garden like yours will be, I am pretty sure things would get trampled, so plain old grass works for me.

Aww Maddy, wish I'd seen this earlier, I would have said rice. Are your shrimp pre-peeled? Cuz yiu can make a really nice stir fry kind of thing with snow peas and shrimp that you then lay on the bed of rice. I've even spiced the rice too. Sorry you aren't well. I hope it goes away soonest.

Kathy, look at you knitting up a storm! I'm thinking you've started something here. If you can't find a 12-16" circular needle, I can send you one. No problem. Although you'd have to wait for the mail - sorry. But in my heart I am into crocheting. Unless I'm speed knitting a scarf. My daughter taught herself continental knitting which is about 5 times faster than conventional thru YouTube bit I can't get used to everything being backwards.

CC, it has now been officially days since we heard from you on this thread. What's up you? Is all ok?

Adey, I do, I do, I do think you're typing has sped up. Lol

That is a ton of snow, Red! Wow. We like to see snow here, since we don't always get snow every winter. But this year so far, just a dusting where we are. Its so pretty to see everything blanketed in snow....IF you are able to stay inside...lol. I can't do gardening yet either, but just because it is so cold and the ground is frozen. We've had unusually low temps this year, but I will take that in preference to all those horrid winter storms hitting the nation. Is this storm going to hit where you live, Red? Looks like it is showing part of Ontario, but I can't tell how far up it is going.

We have had rain, rain, rain, so it is really wet outside, and when we let Molly out in the yard to go potty, she goes behind the trees etc, to find mud. Have to make sure my DH dries off her paws  really well before bringing her inside. (Because of course, I make sure they are clean when I let her out! lol). Then poor Maverick tries to push his way in. Awwww....

@wahine, I am trying to figure out what part of Alabama you are in. It sounds a lot colder there than here. The soil does not often freeze hard, and if it does, it usually doesn't stay frozen for long. And I am looking at a USDA zone map that says I am in 8a, the same zone as Montgomery and Tuscaloosa. I guess you are further north, or are you just having a particularly cold winter there while we are having a normal-to-mild winter here? And of course it is much, much colder in Ontario where Red lives than it ever gets here in the maritime NW. But don't get too riled up about our long season. You have no weeds to pull or grass to mow when everything is frozen solid and covered with snow, but around here, it's a year-round job. The grass grows more slowly in the winter, and it's often too wet to mow, but the weeds never stop!
