Hmmm...I need to go pick up my Rx (UGH) but I am 99% sure my MO prescribed 40 mg. a day. Wonder if I can just cut that dose . I don't like the thought if such a high dose- esp. if there are others on 20. Ity would seem some think 20 is effective.
I guess I wont be sure until I see that bottle!
just a follow up on the endo dr- she says she would take the arimidex were she in my shoes, but I have come to realize it's quite easy for people to say (and think/really believe) what they would do if they were in your shoes. Until it happens to you, I believe we are all somewhere in our heads thinking these things only happen to "other people" and can;'t truly understand . I wont take the arimidex with my osteopenia. I can read my BMD and besides, I have suffered the 3 broken bones.Soooo, tammi it is.
She said calcitonin aka miacalcin is REALLY not effective for bones.
She did order labs for my Ca and D ,but when I asked for a baseline estrogen tests to ' see if the tammi works" she said the bloodwork would not matter. I asked why not, and she explained the the tamoxifen, even if working effectively, does NOT change those numbers at all!
Gotta' run,Thx for your support.

Hi ladies, glad to hear I am not alone. I thought if I didn't feel anything after the first couple months I wouldn't have any issues. I feel a new ache daily it seems. Since I have been running everything hurts. I will suck it up and take the pain though, I won't stop taking the drug. I haev noticed however that the hot flashes that I used to get about 50x a day are down to maybe 3 a day and I feel better at night. Boy those are nasty!! I usually only got them at work. Going to gym after work to get back in my routine. Knees feel a little better but I feel 100 years old.

Hi ckgrayoh
Sounds just like meno ... I went through at age 41 ( cant wait for my 2nd round! :>)
I wonder what this tammi will add to my already aching post menopausal joint . Ugh!

(((Sandee))) So sorry for your loss.
Welcome to you all that are new here. Good luck with the Tammi. It can be over whelming at the start because of the scare factor that comes with this pill. It seems that way with any of the treatments that come along with cancer. Good luck and post anything that comes along. We are here to help ya get thru it.
Well I'm really getting upset with alot of the articles that are going around about the cure for cancer. It is really putting alot of women at risk right now. The last time I checked there was no cure. These are all prevetive measures that are not a 100% that you won't get it. Then the morans who leave their comments after it just really make me want to spit nails. Let them say all this when they are faced with this beast and then they will get it. I want to stay informed for my children and there future with this since I'm BRCA+ and want to be knowledgeable, but I've gotten to the point that I have to stop reading those articles.
Well all have a great day, love and light to you all my Tammo sistas, I love you all!!!!!!!

Purple you went through menopause at 41? Wow, that is young. Did you gain weight? Curious. I wonder if my weight gain is from getting off the Tamoxifen or if I am indeed starting the change, but I heard you have to have no period for a year. And after stopping Tamox my periods have been very heavy and lots of clots......I know TMI, sorry!

June - When I went through menopause at age 52 I did not gain weight at all. Just the opposite, I lost a few pounds. I also guess I was lucky and did not gain weight after starting Tammi. I don't know if there is a set time frame you have to be period free to really be through menopause. Never thought to ask about it. All I know is, I don't miss the monthly ordeals.

Sandee so sorry to hear of the loss of your aunt. I am so glad you were able to track her down and see her.
Odie I hate when family members do this to you. It escpecially hurts when it is someone you trust and respect.
I broke down last night and took a sleeping pill I could not take it any longer. Should have gone to bed earlier, I did not want to get up this morning. I sleep through most of the not flashes. I did wake up about 4am with a mother of a hot flash and then it was kinda off and on after that as I kept feeling them. But overall I did sleep better. I'm going to call the MO office today. I wonder if I lowered my dose to 10mg if that would help?

Sherry - Are you doing a split dose or all at once? If you are not doing the split, maybe that would help? Just guessing here. It really sucks the hot flashes are giving you such a hard time. Let us know what your MO says.

Hi June,
You asked: Purple you went through menopause at 41? Wow, that is young. Did you gain weight?
It's strange, but I might not even have recognized the meno symptoms except my mom went thru at 41 and my older sister too! Previous to that I had nine (yep, 9) yrs of severe heavy bleeding with no known cause and finally and endometrial ablation , so I was thrilled. BTW, that ablation is the best thing since sliced bread if anyone wants to PM me about it!
I must say, the meno symptoms were over in app. 1 yrs time!
In any case, I was skinny ( underweight) my whole life. After menopause, I got a little ' menopot' and through the last 13 yrs I have gained 25-30 lbs.I am NOT looking forward to the tamox!

Heard back from my MO office and he is giving me two options for the hot flashes Effexor 37.5mg or Megace 40mg 2Xday. I don't think I like either option. We have all heard of Effexor and I know some of you have tried it and did not like it. Can't remember what it was you did not like about it but if you want to tell me again I'm listening. I searched Megace and it is a progesterone hormone therapy. Never heard of it but is used in Stage IV BC when other anti hormonals have failed (although he wants to keep me on tamox) and also to increase your appetite. That is already a huge strike, I don't want weight gain. I had a couple of questions for the nurse so she has to talk to the Dr again and call me back. I am inclined to cut back to 10mg per day and see what that does to my hot flashes before I add another potent drug. If anyone wants to give advice I'll listen.

Sherry
Sorry about all your trouble.
I have *not* taken effexor, but I do know quite a bit about it.
Unfortuanetly , it is notorious for weight gain.
Possibly the worse thing about this Anti-D is that ppl. have dubbed it " effects er" for all of its SEs and I know they claim it as THE most difficult anti- d to come off of. Maybe others who take it will give more encouraging news, but this has been my take on it for years. Knew several ppl on it and explored it extensively.
Be wary ...good luck with whatever you decide on.

Hi all! Just spent the evening sewing away. I am so happy to get back into it thats for sure!!
Sherry I took the effexer for about 6 months. It helpped me with the hf for awhile, then it stopped. I also noticed my moods where so different. I don't really know if it was the effexer or just all that had gone on from surgery, chemo, tammo, and exchange surgery all done with in 1 year. I just seemed so out of sorts alot of the time. I finally stopped taking it. It seems that after a week or two I had a turn around on my attitude. I really just don't know if it was related to the effexer or not. I just wanted to share my experence with it thats all. Whatever you deceide, good luck and we are here for you my Sista!

Paula - What are you sewing? I just finished handquilting a small quilt. Took the basting out and trimmed the sides. Now I am ready to put the binding on and I can call this one done.

I'm doing a round robin for our quilt club. I'm adding piano keys. I cheated and bought a jelly roll so I did'nt have a ton of cutting to do. Plus there are guidelines on the theme fabric we have to use, and I didn't have any so off to the quilt shop I had to go. I have never hand quilted before. I need to learn. I just find it easier to do it on the machine.

Sandee - sorry for your loss. I too was in Ottawa this weekend, but for a much happier reason, my daughter's convocation from university.
Been very busy with the kids. Convocation, Prom, youngest is performing with her musical theatre class the last week (doing Joseph) at a third party location as they had fire that destroyed the gym/stage in their school over the Christmas break. So I feel like I have been running/driving in circles. Hate how easily I get tired. Not sure if it tamox or still leftovers from radiation. Saw the pictures from some of these things and I look so tired and a bit old, hate that!
How can we be so tired and yet I have been awake since 3 am? Has anyone had any luck with sleep aids? My pcp gave me restoril, but it doesn't work very well. Have MO apt on 18th, may see if he has any suggestions.

I did not know that menopause could cause joint pain? My mom and sister hit it at 41 so I imagine I would have got into to naturally if the chemo would'nt have done it. It's been a year this July since my monthly bill, onc won't do a hormone level check for another year, he likes to wait 2 years after chemo. In the meantime every joint I have aches and of course my thoughts go to the darkside. This BC crap sucks!! I just hope I live long enough to look back and say "Yeah I kicked its butt".

ckgrayoh - I don't think going through menopause causes joint pain. I went through it 4 years ago and the only thing I had to deal with is the stupid hot flashes. Now the Tamoxifen on the other hand is notorious for causing joint pains. That could be the culprit.

We are a RIOT aren't we!!!! Jim laughs at me.... Shirt on...Shirt off... Jacket on, jacket off.... SLEEVE OFF!! And now it's the A/C!!!
The Effexor help (ed) but now they are back
I just hope after my hand surgery on Monday, that they won't get worse again. Seems like surgeries set them off or change something. 0 -
Debbie why are you going for hand surgery?
0 -
Carple tunnel. Right one while school is out and left at Christmas break.
I'm just hoping that it works. I'm afraid that it's acombination of CT and scar tissue, but I won't know til I heal.
Did I say I HATE drs. I will be freaky all weekend and that I can't from Sunday midnight and surgery is at 1pm
UGH!!!!! 0 -
Debbie good luck with your hand surgery.
Can't decide what to do still waiting for the nurse to call me back. She called at 5 yesterday to tell me the Dr was in with a new patient and would still be awhile and she was going home but would call me this morning. That is OK because when I first went to see him he spent alot of time with me as well. But I could not bring myself to taking the tammi last night. And to top it off I started getting a head cold late yesterday afternoon. I am convinced it is because my body cannot get regulated with the hot and cold. I told my boss I was sorry for freezing him out here at work but he said no problem he would survive. Gee the man's a saint to put up with me.

Debbie - Good Luck with our hand surgery.
Sherry - It is a vicious cycle we find ourselves in with this darn Tamox. We are always raising the question - to take it or not to take it. Then the big question hits - What about quality of life? Shouldn't that be the most important one? We all know this is a crap shoot and there are no guarantees. I know it is a difficult decision and at the end of the day, you will decide what is best for you. (((HUGS)))

Hi ladies
I am new and about to start Tamoxifin in two weeks after 4 rounds of T/C chemo? What can expect as far as side effects? I want to get an idea even though I know it is personal. Thanks Best wishes to all.

Welcome Lezza.
I think we all have simular effects to the Tamox. Mostly hot/cold flashes and body aches. It makes me feel like I'm ALOT older than I am!!! And my mind, not quite sure what to blame that on!! Good luck with your chemo!!!
And thank you guys for the wishes!!! It might be Jim that really needs it, he has to put up with me

Debbie...good luck with your surgery.....!
Sherry so sorry its gotten bad again for you. Every once in awhile I skip a day makes me feel like I have some control over the situation.hot flashes, mood issues anxiety aches and pains.. all of it... it just isn't right.... hugs! Hope your doc gets back to you soon!!!!!0 -
Sherry, I was one of those who had trouble with Effexor - nightmares, bad thoughts, insomnia worse, crazy brain - not much if any improvement in the hot flashes or the peripheral neuropathy - and took several weeks to get off of it - had withdrawal with nausea, worse bad thoughts, worse crazy brain for a few days - but I seem to react badly to just about every medicine out there. Ambien, tylenol, xanax - those seem to help without causing horrible SEs except drowsiness, and I am on the lowest doses or half doses of these.
Someone asked if I was "on a break" or if I am completely off tammi - depends on whether you talk to me or my MO - LOL! I see her in July and we will discuss it again I am sure - meanwhile I am going on vacation to VT and maybe trying to get off the ambien while I am there. Wish me luck! I was interested to see that some people are using 10 mg tamoxifen and wondered if the SEs are as bad with that and if it is effective. Would appreciate any info anyone has.
Hugs to all.

Welcome Lezza - The most common side effects are hot flashes and joint/bone aches. Tends to make you feel so much older. I sure hope you are one of the lucky ones and don't have to experience any SEs.
Linda - I hope you have the best time in VT.
