Lezza - Welcome to the best bunch of ladies you will ever meet.  Everyone is different is when they take their Tamox.  I take mine in the morning with breakfast.  No way can I take it on an empty tummy.  You will have to decide when would be the easiest and see what happens.  If, for example, you take it in the am and experience side effects then switch to the pm.  On the subject of side effects.  Not everyone has them.  Seems hot flashes, hair loss, sleep loss seems to be the most common ones.  If the hot flashes become too unbearable then you can always ask your MO about Effexor.  There are some who take that and they will come along and fill you in on that.  Just like I know there will be others who will come along and shaire their experience with Tamox.  Good Luck to you.

Paula - Where oh where do you find such find eye candy????

Deb - Crossing fingers for clear results.

Lezza - Welcome!! Like Jo said, we are all different. I take my Tammi at night since I initially had nausea so that way I could sleep thru it. As for side effects, I have a few less hairs, paper thin nails, muscle aches and hot flashes. They aren't pleasant but tolerable and definitely better than the possible alternative... Wishing you an uneventful trip with Tamoxifen...

Deb - In your pocket tomorrow ... Hugs

Jo - Hoping for good results for you so you can get a month or two off from doctor visits!

To everyone else, stay cool. Has been hovering at 100 degrees here for days and we had a nasty storm plow thru Friday. Hope everyone else weathered the storm ok.

odie - Have you tried Biotin - 5000mcgs for the hair and nails?  It has done wonders for me.  It does take some time to notice the difference.

Hi everyone, I haven't posted for a while but I felt the need to connect with people that have something in common with . I have been taking Tamox since 2010  once my chemo & radiation was finished. I don't know that I had any side effects. I do know that in my case weight loss was not one of them. lol  I am finding that I am having trouble sleeping lately  and the wierdest thing is that I am starting to feel like I did when I was going through chemo. I'm feeling anxious and scared and I don't know why. I don't see my oncologist again for six months and I lost touch with the nurse practioner. So I don't know what to do. I thought that by putting my concerns here might ease my anxiety. Any suggestions or thoughts anyone might have would be so appreciated.

    Thanks

Lezza welcome to the group.  The gals here are great!! On the SE its really different for everyone.  But for the most part it seems like hot flashes and night sweats are the most common thing.  I had them like crazy when I started it.  They have let up, thank goodness.  I do have alot of joint pains now.  I also have weight gain.  That has leveled off as well.  I'm not to crazy about that part, but it is what it is.  I finally just made peace with that part and have moved on with it.  My tummy was upset for a couple of weeks so I split the dose in half until my body adjusted then started taking the whole pill.  Just make for sure that you get a trans vag ultrasound yearly so they can moniter your lady parts. Good Luck and come back and post anything that concerns you.

    Jumping in the pockets Deb!

    HI Ladies,

Been a few since I've logged in here. I have to ask though how many of you get really, really tired on Tamoxifen. I exercise a lot, like 6-7 days a week hard and usually I feel great, but on some days I get this overwhelming feeling of tiredness to the point I have to take a 2 hour nap. It usually hits me mid day. I am eating good and like I said working out, but it's not that normal I've done to much type of feeling. It's more a feeling of drain throughout my whole body. Does this sound like something from the Tamoxifen.

    Hi Ladies,

Got home a little while ago from the biopsy.  It wasn't quite as bad as I expected, but it was certainly no day at the beach either!  Now I have to wait a week to 10 days for the results.Tongue out  The doctor doesn't anticipate anything bad, so I pray he is right.

Thank you for the pocket party and for behaving yourselves in there...I didn't hear a peep out of any of you!!!

Well all I made it through another 3 month Onc visit and the foobies are doing fine.  I was kinda hoping for a change in the time I have between appointments but that was a big no go!!  Bummer, I guess its something that has to come with time.  He did find a lump on my thyroid so next week I have a sonagram to do, ugh.  I'm not even gonna go to the darkside on this one.  It is what it is and I'm just gonna stay focused on other stuff.  He did say that alot of times the lumps are just cysts so I'm telling myself thats all it is.

I hope all stays looking good for you Deb!

Have a great day all!!  Love and light to you all!!  Love ya my sistas!!

Deb -  Glad you made it through the biopsy okay.  The waiting game really sucks - I am also waiting for path report.  Keeping fingers crossed for B9 results.

Paula - congrats on the 3 month onc visit. Too bad he won't let you go to 6 month visits.  The lump is going to be nothing so enjoy yourself over the 4th and beyond.  (((HUGS)))

jo-Thanks for all of the suggestions.  Hope your own results were good

odie16.  thanks for the welcome. Looks like I can try taking it at night with some food and my nausea pill!!

Paula66:  Thanks for the welcome and all of those ideas.  I think I will do what you did and take half a pill with food.  I got used to the hotflashes and night sweats before chemo. I guess I have to endure them again.  I will ask for that trans vag because no one else mentioned my lady parts. Certainly not my male onc!  Glad  you made it through your 3 month visit.  Oh, and thanks for the eye candy too!

vacationbound - We usually go out of Galveston since we live in deep South Texas.  This time we are driving to Tampa and head out of there.  I found a great deal and we will be going to some different ports.  We have done the Galveston route for so long - we are bored with it.  This will be cruise #8.  What a way to take a vacation.

I started taking Tamoxifen on Saturday........  I am nervous about gaining weight, I was trying to lose weight before I was diagnosed in January.  My DIEP flap reconstruction maybe cut 4-5 pounds but not as much as I would like to lose.  I know side effects are different for everyone.  I had a hysterectomy (kept my ovaries) so I don't have to worry about the period issues. My mom took it and said she didn't have any side effects that she remembers.  Osteoporosis runs in my family so I am nervous about my bone density. I have a baseline scan tomorrow.  Not sure about hot flashes :)  my mom said she never had them when she went through menopause but this is different I think.  I work with someone is on tamoxifen and gets them.........  I guess I'll find out.... for now I am going to try and keep close track of my weight.

    Thanks for all the info!

Hope everyone has a happy fourth of july!

Deb: glad your biopsy went well! The waiting sucks....But hope you are keeping a couple of those man candies in your pocket for us who will be hanging out with you until you get you B9 report!

Sammie: yeah, we all get different SE's but this is a great site to get support and suggestions for managing them. I've gained about 4 pounds since I started a little over a month ago....my appetite has been ravenous!,.....course it doesn't help that my DH is advocating for more belly for the DIEP I'll be getting in sept or Oct. Hugs!

    Happy 4th everyone!!!

ANDHAPPY ANNIVERSARY Jo!!!!!! 14 more years and I'll catch up...... Ha Ha Ha.  nope : D

I just kinda ran through and TRIED to catch up. Deb, I hope everything turns out alright!!!

Sammi, I'm not sure how I did it, but I lost about 30lbs after I started all of this mess. I had my bmx & hyster together w/ ovaries and my bone scan was good (1 yr later). My onco said to make sure I take a vitamin with at least 800mg of D and I take a calcium tab (back & forth on REALLY taking them). As for my side effects, I can't even explain anymore. So much stuff has happened that I'm confused as to what is from what!!! UGH!!!

SKIP THIS PART, IT"S BORING!!!!!  Foot in mouth

OK.... :/ I feel like poop. I'm not sure if it's from being a human skewer (all CLEAR.... YAH!!!, just had my esphogas stretched) last week or if it's just my normal again. I never really got SICK this time from the anthesia because my DH had me on my nausea pills that I DON"T take by mouth from the day after and I'm still taking 1 (1/2 this morning) just to get rid of it so I can start my day. UGH x2 !!!!!   My DH said my brain fogs are from ALL my meds, he didn't mean it, just is frustrated about work and I'm screwy in the head!!! (I'm frustrated too!!!!)Last week's was from my aniexty over the above mentioned activity  :/   Now I just feel like crap!!!!   But hey, hand is healing, I only have 1 appt. next week (therapy....stretch massage....Ahhhh) and then I see Dr foobs. Wonder what he is going to say about my 3 foobs (rad one is still split) and my new fake nipple that developed after my last appt.

OK.... I'm done :D   HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!

Happy Anniversary, Jo!  39 years is great.  We'll be 34 yrs. next month.

Sammie....I have been told by my MO that tammox. acts like an estrogen on our bones, so we usually don't lose density from it.  In fact, it is one of the reasons I am taking tamoxifen rather than an AI at my age.  Also, I  had a hysterectomy, so I don't have to worry about uterine cancer issues.

Deb...glad the bx is over and I hope the wait will not be too trying....and I hope it will be B9!!

    Happy 4th everyone.

Girlpower said :"a 33 year survivor.  She had a mastectomy, 5 chemo treatments, no rads.  Later in life she had a hysterectomy but they did NOT take her ovaries.  Then later, she actually was on hormone replacement therapy!  She has never had a recurrance. "

Sure as heck makes you wonder, doesn't it ?
I feel no confdence at all!   Crapshoot.

    Happy anniversary Jo

    Ladies I have a question.

I am going on a trip in a fews weeks and will be flying for the first time since surgeries. I have had both a sentinel and an axiallary node dissection. Does any one know if I need to wear a compression arm grament. The flight is only about 2 and half hours and I dont have signs of lymphedema... just curious

Sammie-I've read that Tamoxifen is actually good for our bones. There is some benefits to taking it other than the anti-cancer benefits. If you eat right and excerise you should be fine. I fine that I haven't gained weight after 2 years but I find it extremely hard to loss an ounce. I work out 7 days a week, running, spinning and weights. If I ever worked out this hard before I'd have lost 10 pounds. I feel like if I don't this I would gain weight. Then again part of it is my age,47. I hear it's very hard to lose anything after 40. Anyway, take one day at a time. You may have no SE at all or very mild ones.

Gotta question - hope someone can help.

I had a hysteroscopy and a D&C on Friday.  Had a tiny bit of spotting on Friday which I was told would be normal.  Fast forward to today.  Have been spotting all day and have cramps on my left side.  I am post menopausal.  Should this be a concern? Should I call my gyn in the morning?  I had a D&C last year and it was a total piece of cake.  No pains, no spotting.  This is year so much different.

Jo:  When I had the D&C and hysteroscopy in February, I had spotting the first day, the next day nothing, then the spotting started again on the 3rd day and continued for about 4 days after that.  Then it suddenly just stopped.  The doctor said I could have some bleeding for up to a week so I wasn't too nervous about it.  Now I had the stupid biopsy on Tuesday and I still have spotting today.  I thought it was over, but it's back.  I hate this!!!!

    And Happy Anniversary!!!

Happy Anniversary Jo!  Enjoy the trip!

I have yet to start my bottle.  Too scared. First I am going to my MD Friday for a pelvic exam and then that trans vaginal ultrasoud.  I do not know when or how to take it.  I have heard lots of ideas and appreciate them all. I guess I just have to make sure my insides are good to go.  My dad had a history of blood clots whcih is part of the fear.  I may take it in the morning this Friday before my appointment and deal with the hot flashes during the day and hope to avoid the dreams. I have my exchange surgery next week and am just plain scared. Thanks for listening!

Hope every one have a nice holiday and thanks for the warm welcome.

Lezza have you asked your PS if he wants you to start the tamox before or after your exchange.  I have been on Tamox since Feb 11 when I had my BMX in March 12 my PS had me stop tamox 2 weeks before surgery.  He has also instructed me to stop it two weeks before my exchange which I hope to have in August.  All PS's are different but I would ask.

when I first started tamox I lost 5lbs.  I did not need to at the time because I had lost 25lbs during DX and treatment.  Worked hard at gaining the 5 lbs back which I did and since then I work out regularly and eat healthy but do not really watch and I have not gained anything  I just stay at about the same weight.  the hot flashes for me did not start right away and then it was a gradual thing.  Unfortunately they got really unbearable and I am now on Effexor which I can say has worked for me and I have not had any hot flashes.  Although I am having other SE's from the Effexor but will discuss that with MO next Friday when I go in.

SherryC-  thanks. Glad Effexor is working for you.  I have had hot flashes before BC and they were pretty bad. I think that was in the back of my mind, having my exchange next week, to not start a new drug before the surgery.  I am seeing my MD on Friday and will ask her about Effexor too.  May I ask, when do you take the pill?

Purple32 - I saw you snagged a piece of my sister's story - with that kind of history in my family, which way do you go?  It makes you realize there are absolutely no certainties in this game, doesn't it?  Two people, same diagnosis, same treatment - could react totally different to the treatment, and have a different outcome.  You are right - a crap shoot.
