Be still my heart!  Lisa, how close were you when you took that pic?

    Still loving that ignore button.

I have white lillies blooming in my garden and they smell like furniture polish to me.  And skunks smell like coffee and rubber bands.

This was the post with which "thedudess" started this thread 3-1/2 years ago:

"Hi I am newly diagnosed and I know alot of people rely on their faith for support and find great peace with that, however I am an atheist and was wondering if anyone else here was also."

I know for a fact that she was not asking to debate the issue, or wishing for conversion.  [Edited again to remove a statement that was too provocative.]

    Just sayin.

    Ooh-Rah!!

    Lisa, appreciating the scenery.

P.S. Of course ducks are atheists--and not always fond of people, religious or not, who eat them, which I don't.

Pony .. I don't have you on ignore, but I would really like you to take the stupid pic of the duck off this thread.  It has no place here and has nothing to do with the thread topic.

Well, Lisa, that might be a good thing because I was thinking that being close enough to take that pic could get a girl's heart rate up a little too high.  Wink

Okay, now that I am not on Ambien I do have something to say to Moody.

To say that you have read the Bible cover to cover and studied for 35+ years means nothing unless you can be more specific about those study sources.  If by that you mean that you have availed yourself of the vastly divergent views out there then I can respect that you have made an informed decision for you.  If you have limited yourself to the information that is filtered by a Christian perspective than that does not rise to the level of informed choice.

Have you read J. Anderson Thomson? Albert Einstein? Anythiing about Quantum Physics and religion?  The Mind of God by Paul Davies is a good bridge book.  Have you read The Koran? (I have.)  Have you ready any of the Eastern Philosophers?  Have you taken a course in or studied Comparitive Religions?

At one time people believed that when it thundered God was angry.  Now we have the science of Meteorology.

I don't believe what you believe.  I am not surprised at your need for the validation of others.  I also will defend your right to believe what you chose but as others have said please afford us the same courtesy and be assured that none of us have come to this conviction without walking the walk.

Moody is no longer posting on this thread by her own choice.  We are once again a religion free zone... until next time. Laughing

thanks again Lisa for sharing your AMAZING talent.

eta:  Haven't seen Flannel in a long time.  Is she ok?  Anybody know?  Or have I just missed her posting?

Thanks notself, until the next time. when it says so clearly, clearly ATHEIST in the op, and it's the only one, so far,  this thread now feels so vulnerable?  It's been such a lovely respite, healing place, and so peaceful.  Thank you to all for creating this place...

and to all those Pastafarians, I'm still smiling

C-S ... I have been a long-time member here (under a different nick since I was stalked and driven off the board some time ago).  I have recently started posting again after lurking for quite some time.  I used to post here, too, but haven't until now.

There are "religion eruptions" here from time to time.  Some people cannot resist and cannot comprehend that others think differently than they do.  They do go away eventually, and if they don't, that lovely ignore button works beautifully.

I told my (completely agnostic) girlfriend about FSM and Ceiling Cat (and Basement Cat, notself!) yesterday.  For some reason, she had NEVER HEARD OF THEM!  Oh boy, does she have a treat when she goes to lolcats and reads the lolcat bible!  And the FSM page.

May the sauce be with you!

    I am so sorry.

C-S, please don't leave this thread because of what I posted about thedudess's intentions.  Even though I'm a card-carrying member of the group represented by the O.P., I really haven't been a resident here.  I just drop by from time to time when I want to feel like I'm at home.  Some of you have been coming here on a regular basis for years; by comparison, I am a newcomer.  Newcomers do not make the "rules".

This thread has been so much more than a discussion among atheists about dealing with cancer.  I've been reading the thread all along, and the topics discussed here have been much broader than just non-belief.  I didn't mean for that to stop.  I have no business suggesting that others who've been posting here in peace ought to go somewhere else, just because they don't fit into a particular mold.  The long-time residents here were happy with how things have been going, and now I've messed them up.

All I wanted was for religious believers thinking of proselytizing here, or even just hoping to start a discussion about "what atheists think," would reconsider before they posted to this thread.  I might have been wrong about that -- if so, then I apologize.  And, I am very sorry if my post has made some "regulars" so uncomfortable that they would rather not come back here.  :(

[ETA: Now I'm wondering if I misunderstood what C-S was saying.  <sigh>]

Oh, dearest Otter ... IMO, your post about "the dudess" and her intentions was spot-on!  I didn't take it any other way ... this is a lovely thread in which people discuss lots of different things, with the common thread of not being forced to believe.  I think that you got that right.  The appearance of yet another proselytizer was disturbing (but probably inevitable -- we aren't the only ones who suffer from MTF).  I didn't find anything you said offensive or in any way disrespectful of the belief or non-belief of the residents here .... And if you are talking about Moody, she was not a regular poster here.

So from this pastafarian/ceiling cat devotee, please don't feel bad.  Ceiling cat luv teh otter -- otter look like skinee cat.  Sorta. kbye.

And may you be touched by his noodly appendage.

    Hugs

As someone said before, it is nice to have a religious free zone...we don't try to

convince anyone else that we are right, just like to be left alone without all the

religious trimmings some other places have to endure. If someone wants to pray

for me, why the heck not. Makes them feel better. just don't expect a thank you from

me..I think on the whole we are very moral people...and if religion likes to pick up

morals from social control behaviors that is ok, it is when they want others to do and

believe as they do that causes the friction as well as telling us all about it..so I don't say

    much.

Otter .. honey .. you're okay!  I don't think Sunflowers is going to leave this thread.  Your reminder of the OP was good to remind the believers that we don't need their input here.

Over the years, this thread has really been helpful for me, especially when I was struggling with what my beliefs were.  It's hard for us gals who were raised in a religious home and school atmosphere to lose their faith.  And it takes time to get comfortable with our new beliefs ... thankfully everyone was so supportive on this thread.

Hope everyone is having a good day,

    Caerus Sunflower,

This thread is not vulnerable because all posters treat each other with respect.  There was only one brief instance when a visitor tried a bit too hard to save us all from Basement Cat.  The rest of the visitors may take a bit longer before they decide to leave but when they find there is no one interested in being converted, they move on.   Of course, all are welcome to post here about anything other than saving our non existent souls.

I do wonder what the reaction would be if any of us went to the Christian or Catholic thread and tried to deprogram them.

Somehow I had missed Ceiling Cat vs. Basement Cat and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Otter, don't leave. The only person who offends me are those who come to convert. In fact, not much drives me to anger but that--and the abuse of animals and humans.

I usually say thanks to people who say they're praying for me, but I've gotten to where I just don't tell anyone about anything I'm going through to avert that avenue completely.

Ah well, I believe our thread can exist peacefully again for a time.

Although I don't always post I check this thread on a regular basis and really enjoy it... especially as it introduces me to all sorts of fundamentally important characters which have changed the world as we know it, such as the creator of pastafarianism and ceiling and basement cats...(thankyou notself,), apart of course from being able to appreciate nature in its various forms, both flora and beefcake.

Beef would fall under the catagory of fauna and the scientific name for beef cake is pulcher bovis.

Some how it doesn't sound as masculine as beef cake.

I thought 'pulcher' means beautiful...so while I don't negate the fact that beefcake is beautiful, I 'm not sure your translation is  technically correct...I mean, where's the cake bit?  Sorry to be a pedant, but accuracy is important in such important matters don't you think?
