Is anyone else an atheist with BC besides me?

    Anan,

I loved it!!!! The nuns were very liberation theology/women oriented and it really shaped my political thought and why I am a feminist

Today, with this pope, perhaps you'd still be a Catholic.

i don't believe in a god who gets involved in people's lives. i do believe in physics tho'. i am mostly optimistic. if i take reasonable care of myself, try to have some fun in life, and do what the doctors tell me to do, i think i have a chance for longevity. i don't pray, but i'm aware that i'm lucky to be a free-thinker facing reality head on.

I'm also an atheist and am ten years free of breast cancer. When friends say they'll pray for me, I tell them 'thank you.' When they tell me that they have a problem, I respond, 'I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed,' or 'I'll be thinking of you,' 'I'm wishing the best for you,' etc. All of us are sincere. Like you, I am satisfied with my being and personal optimism. Your odds for longevity are the same as any religious person with the same diagnosis, same age group and health before diagnosis, same family history and genetics. Your awareness and free thinking are equal to the thoughts and prayers of believers. As we don't like religious people proselytizing to us, we don't need to flaunt our atheism; we're all in this for the long haul.

In the meantime, take care my friend. My thoughts are with you.

I always thank people who have me on their "prayer list" and when someone needs support I always say "sending healing white light your way" (whatever that means) it seems to satisfy.

    Hi ladies,

Glad to see this thread! I was the president of my college atheist club - literally a card-carrying atheist. Since then my views have mellowed to spiritual sometimes but not religious. I have participated in Zen meditation when I have found a good group. I love Zen - the pathless path, the wayless way. Learning to live in the moment. The idea of organized religion is completely anathema to Zen. (With one caveat - as with all practices, spiritual or otherwise, it depends on the group and their philosophy.) I have not found a good Zen group in South Florida yet.

Geez, as big as Miami is, you would think you could find one. I'm a Miami native,, fled back when I went to college. Don't like big city life.

Schrunchthecat, Here is what I found.

Zen - http://miami.cbslocal.com/top-lists/top-meditation... Stay away from Drolma Kadampa. It is very similar to Scientology.

If none of the above suit you, try the Theravada centers. Theravada is fairly close to Zen with the minimum of fluff and good meditation.

Thanks for the meditation links, ladies! And Spookiesmom - I am a Florida native, grew up in Venice, which is maybe not too far from you?? Are you being treated at Moffitt? They are supposed to be good.

I'm next to Clearwater, in Dunedin. I did my tx at Morton Plant in Cwater. Moffitt was my plan B. They are the only NIH hospital in Fl, excellent facility. Venice is over the Skyway a few hours.

Hello all, I'm a atheist/secular humanist joining this discussion. Living in a bible belt state but my local town and nearest major city are moderate and inclusive. Asked for advice/support from my humanist meetup group and was shocked I didn't get any great recommendations or assistance. I was starting to become active and hosting in a small meetup group when I got diagnosed so I had not bonded with anyone at that time. I also decided to discontinue attending meetups until I'm done with treatment.

It looks like there aren't any irreligious cancer support groups. What's a lady to do when I'd like to chat without hearing "blessings, pray, god, miracle, Jesus", etc.

bemba, I didn't find anything here that worked for me, so this site has been my support group. The only group I could get to was described as 'networking' which sounded young and corporate. I didn't tell many people, so didn't get a lot of God stuff. Good luck with your treatment. There are a lot of threads on here which mention God rarely or never. You might start with one for chemo since you're starting Taxol.

Hi suresis, I bite my tongue with friends or acquaintances all the time. But now it's different because it's really a life and death matter affecting me. I had my cancer results sent to my PCP's office and the attending doctor talking with me decided to tell me to "pray pray pray". Why don't people remember that in the USA it's not only populated with christians but with several other beliefs/non-belief worldviews? And it's more frustrating to me when people in the healthcare business also make religious references. If there was an all powerful deity out there that could grant miracles, there wouldn't be a need for doctors or anyone in the medical field.

I would be horrified if a doctor told me to pray! Like, really, that's going to help?? **Let's talk MEDICAL treatment, bud, and can the prayer talk."

Remember the "I'm a Catholic, call a priest" medallions? I threatened to get one that said, I'm an athiest, call a doctor.

Well the Humanists in my little town stood up for the Constitution and all non Christians everywhere in the country.  I'm proud of them.

For years Christians have put up a Nativity Scene on the courthouse lawn.  Last year a Wiccan group wanted to put up a Happy Solstice display.  It was turned down.  The Wiccans went to the Humanist Society who represented them in a suit.  The Federal Court ruled that all faiths should be allowed to display on the courthouse lawn or none should.  The local judge ruled that no displays will be allowed.  I guess he didn't want anyone to know there were other belief systems other than Christian.  Here's the article.  http://www.arktimes.com/ArkansasBlog/archives/2015/11/25/baxter-county-will-go-secular-with-courthouse-display

Good for them! Football coach here was leading prayers with the team at the 50yd line before games. Someone said it should be open for other religions to pray before the game. School decided no one could pray before the game after a group of Satanists from Seattle offered their services.

It bugs me that Christians act like they are the only religion and they are free to put their stuff everywhere, knock on your door, hand out leaflets while you going to your job, etc. If they want to follow their religion, fine. But if others do not, leave them alone.

In the local church, my daughter plays violin at Easter mass and Christmas mass. She loves getting the 20 euros and just tries to sit through the boring bits without breaking out in laughing when she thinks of the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.

Have you noticed that the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch resembles a Jackson-Pratt drain?

    Spilt Bean, love your name....

I have been a atheist, agnostic, since childhood. With the horrific shit that is happening in the world right now, makes me even more committed to my beliefs, understanding. I live in a ultra conservative, religious community, but I truely believe, live & let live. No judgement. Let's face it, that's hard on both sides of the fence.

Xmas is long, my hubby is a half assed Catholic, but I love the lights......lol....

You could join "Breast Cancer Atheist Support Group" I don't know how to post a link but if you have Facebook it is easy to find :)

Umm, maybe I should do this properly...

Hi, my name is Split, and I love spaghetti. I have welcomed spaghetti into my body since I was a student and had to cook for myself. Now, I gather with my family to celebrate its tasty nutritionness.

However, I must confess -- no offence to my enlightened brothers and sisters of the FSM -- I also love soup and chili, not to mention delicious fruits of all kinds. I think it is not important WHICH food you eat, but that it is nutritious and tasty. Sadly, there are many people who are not well nourished. Some are innocent victims of poverty, some have lost their way and make bad dietary choices. I don't judge -- I just make more spaghetti and eat it on their behalf. (That helps them, doesn't it????)
