Is anyone else an atheist with BC besides me?

Melissa welcome..

For some reason, the "this I believe" that has stuck with me the longest (maybe because it was the first, or one of the first, that I heard) was about how you should always tip the pizza delivery guy. It sums up all that I like about the series, taking something seemingly trivial and very concrete and spinning a big, important, life-guiding lesson out of it.
Happy new year, everyone. I plan to toast the blue moon with champagne tonight. (If I wave an empty bottle at it, will that keep me in bubbly for the coming year?)

Linda, thanks, I just posted that on my FB page for today. I haven't heard "This I Believe" in a long time. Thanks for reminding me of it. Now I'm going to read some entries for the new year.

I'm going to bookmark that site. I've decided that I believe rock climbing is a metaphor for life. I will write that up one day.

I was searching around for the book about "god hates amputees"--I couldn't find it. But I did find what I think may be it on-line here: http://whywontgodhealamputees.com/
It's an interesting lookiong website, and the book is on line. I've just browsed it briefly.
Happy New Year, everyone!

Happy New Year Friends!
Layne .. Tim and I went outside last night and shook our purse/wallet at the blue moon. There was a little bit of fog, but we could still see it. Haven't checked the purse/wallet yet this a.m. to see if there's a little something new inside.
I left all the blinds up last night (our house is full of floor to ceiling windows) and let the moon light shine it. It was so beautiful .. .everything had a blue hue to it.
Will keep everyone updated on the events of the purse/wallet shaking!
hugs,
Bren

Anne, thanks for finding that website! I'll be sending it out to all my friends I debate these questions with - both those who agree and those who disagree!

Damn it -- I forgot to jiggle my purse at the moon!!!!
0 -
I think I did it - maybe - there was a cloud cover and it might have been the right direction. We must have made quite a sight, my friend and I sometime after midnight, skidding on the ice on the road looking for the moon and shaking our purses in its general direction. Haven't looked in my purse yet - or will the money appear elsewhere sometime during the year?

layne and others, I also love that program on NPR, and didn't think of looking it up to read the stories. I will do that now! You guys are great! I believe in God but I also believe in that ALL of are sisters! In sisterhood, xo

Good to see you all after I was gone for two weeks. Maybe I should move to Canada. <grin> Although I think Minnesota may unofficially be one of the provinces. After all, we're "Minnesota Nice" (a Canadian trait to be sure) and we talk funny. LOL
Not that I'm complaining, but the windchill yesterday morning was neg-36. Shriek!
I got to see the blue moon very early on New Year's Eve morning, as I flew home on a puddle-jumper from my mom's house. It was neat to be above the clouds and see the blue moon setting on one side of the plane and the beautiful sunrise on the other side of the plane.

Thanks from me too, SoCal -- how wonderful to see blue sky; it's been total cloud cover here since Thursday, with 8 inches of white stuff on the ground. (Madalyn, I'll bring the cheese....)
Cindy, hope you had a lovely 2 weeks, and so great that you saw the Blue Moon. I could only play it!!

I cant say I dont believe in god as such, I believe there is a higher power to us. I dont have the need to go in a building in my best cloths and prove to others that I am a god fearing person. I believe as long as you repect others and there believes its enough. when I was dx my partner said now you have to come to church and pray I asked her why?, she said because you are sick and god will heal you. I told her I saw no point in going in these buildings when I was well and I certainly dont see the piont now I am sick I will not be hypicritical like that.her sister who had BC turned to the church and now she is 6foot under I didnt go to church and Im cancer free, so what do you make of that. I dont know. but as for the dudes being insulting, I cant see that all she has done is ask a question.

I'm not one to knock religion, and I know many, many people whose religious faith deepens their sense that we're all brothers and sisters and need to care for one another.
That said, I just have to vent about Pat Robertson's comments on Haiti. Unbelievable. If God were in fact the kind of god Robertson seems to believe in, I'd rather *lose* Pascal's wager.

I just googled this and I am appalled. What an ignorant, horrible person. People actually listen to this guy??? If the devil exists he must be a close relative to this wingnut.

Linda & Elizabeth, I heard his remarks on Haiti yesterday. How hateful is that??
You can read an article on his remarks:

Interesting thread. I will have to go back and read more later -- when I'm waiting for my 5-post-newbie limitation to reset!
I use the "why god won't heal amputees" web discussion often. I've had it bookmarked forever.
I believe in the potential of man ("man" in the species mode, not gender mode).
Man is capable of tremendous good, and man is also capable of despicable harm.
We should take credit and responsibility for both. It's ours. We own it, the good and bad.
I think people who say they are praying for you when you share with them some sort of disheartening news are either a) really going to pray for you, and, if so, if it makes them feel better, no harm, no foul, or b) are shocked and saddened by your news and just don't know what else to say to describe their depth of feeling.
So, even though I'm not a believer in magical thinking, I simply say "thank you" because, either way, they are only expressing that they care about you.
But then, on the other hand, sometimes that is letting them off the hook easy. Once they say, "I'll be praying for you" and you reply the expected "Thanks," they (the ones who said it because they don't know what else to say) consider the "transaction" closed.
I've noticed in cases like that, that's generally the last you hear from them, unless you instigate a reconnection.
For those who say, "I'll be praying for you" and then follow it up with, "Let me know if there is anything I can do to help," well, to those people I usually do delegate SOMETHING to them. Sometimes it's as simple as someone posted upthread, "please make a donation to X, Y or Z" or whatever.

Welcome to this thread, Ezscriibe. You'll find it's wonderfully warm and supportive (and often funny, too). I see you were just diagnosed last week: so, so sorry about that. Hope you're doing OK.

Pat Robertson's comments about Haiti are simply disgusting. How can a human being care so little about other human beings?? Sad part is people listen to his garbage :<

Pat Robertson is the kind of person that gives Christians a bad name.

I agree lovemyfamily. A retired nurse from Ontario arrived the day of the earthquake for her 3rd time on a Christian mission to provide health care. Now that's Christianity in it's purest form. Unfortunately she was killed by the earthquake.

I am a lapsed Catholic who is becoming increasingly more agnostic every year--particularly in 2009 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I enjoyed reading the posts on this site and find it very comforting that I am not alone. I don't have anything profound to add, but want to send all of you positive energy and many good wishes for getting through this dreadful disease.
As for Pat Robertson's comment regarding the earthquake in Haiti, I really think this man has dementia. Seriously...he has made so many ridiculous remarks in the past few years. I can't think of any other reason this "religious" man would be so callous toward the deaths of so many innocent people.

Second the good vibes to Elizabeth. Been thinking about you all evening . . .

Thanks Madalyn and Linda. I really appreciate your (everyone's) kind thoughts.
I'm gonna make like a sick cat and lay low for a few days. But I have plans with some girlfriends next week. I might be postponing my trip to Boston next weekend too -- even my b/f isn't that appealing right now -- no energy.

Ezscriiibe, welcome! I'm on whywontgodhealamputees as a member. If you post over there too, send me a pm and I'll tell you my username over there.
Hugs to you and best of luck on your journey with breast cancer. I just completed my treatments in september and am feeling quite well.
