Hair Hair Hair - Another question

@ Mom of boys: Thank you! Sorry to hear your color didn't take. I am still researching myself but i think if your stylist puts some gold in the formula or maybe "fills" the hair first (she will know what that means) you may get better results. Did the hair not cover at all? Or did it turn a muddy/greyish color?
Best,
Joseph

Hey Dianne- I think we are about in the same place. I have noticed in the last week that I am beginning to get a five o'clock shadow so some color is kind of coming in. DH pointed it out to me too. I have 4 more weekly Taxol, but my hair started coming back several weeks ago. I swear I'm looking in the mirror every hour!0

stef58, the little white hairs are guard hairs and the spikes will increase and thicken. I am three months out and my lenght isn't anything to write home about but it is getting as thick as it was when I was a kid. I colored my hair an ultra light blonde to lighten the hair that wasn't naturally white. I was kind of tired of looking like a skunk. I think dawn gave me the courage to do it. I wish all of you well and may our hair grow, grow, grow!

Joseph... Thanks! She was able to get some of the gray in the front to go away. It's at least a better match now to the back. The muddish/grey color is how I would best describe it now.0

Mom of Boys: If you go back to your colorist and ask her to put a gold gloss (or glaze) I think it will chnage it to a rich tone and shine to your color. Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for your input Koryn and soaplady. I really, really appreciate it. It seems no one here is in the same position as I am. I realize many must feel I should be thankful that I still have some hair and have no sympathy for me. That doesn't change the horrible way I feel though. I'm not exactly thrilled with being the exception to the rule, especially considering the way I look right now.
Thanx so much for the suggestions on color and the Biotin. I'm absolutely going to give that a try! A little color may make my hair look fuller. Seeing my scalp on the sides of my head is not exactly attractive. Who knows!!
Again, thank you so very much!

Thank you ladies for all these wonderful and helpful posts. I am almost 6 weeks post chemo and feel like my hair will never grow! i have stubble but still look totally bald because the hair is so colorless that it might as well not be there at all. My eyebrows and lashes have not grown back yet and came out the week after chemo ended. i have about 5 hairs on each brow. I am taking biotin (1200mg per day) and think i will up this sine it seems like you cant OD on biotin.
I just keep telling myself that by Christmas i will have a crew cut and can stop hiding under scarves. Is this too much to wish for? By the holidays i will be 4 months past chemo.
I am so afraid i will be the one person whos hair doesnt grow back! Even if it takes a year, i just want to know it will come back! does eveyone feel this way? Runnig to the mirror each morning to see if it grew overnight just to be dissapointed?

trishK, I feel exactly the way you do but I am 3 months post chemo and all I have is a little peach fuzz in some areas. I just want to know it will grow back fully even if it takes a little longer than most.0

Hi Trish K - I am 7 weeks out of chemo and only at the beginning of last week, something started to sprout through - I too thought that my hair would never show signs of growing in again. Now my brows and lashes are also growing in and it is such a relief. I did speak to my Onc about it a couple of weeks ago and she said it was not time to worry yet. I hope yours starts to show soon.
Always feel free to vent here though : )
Have a good evening, Judy x

shadow- I have been looking for this hair thing I saw on TV, the closest I have found so far is this:
http://www.glamourhair.com/styleguides/revolution1.asp
It's like a weft of hair attached to a elastic type string thing, you put into your hair to make it fuller.
this page gives you a better idea, but it's for the kind that uses glue to glue to your hair or hair, and that sounds like way too much of a pain in the arse, but you see how thin hair becomes full, and how they part the hair, just use the circular kind in the link above so you don't have to glue or clip it to your remaining hair:
http://www.glamourhair.com/extensions/seamless-HowtoApply.asp
This could work for Lori too... Keratin to straighten out her hair, then this kind of temporary extension weft to get her length back:
Here's a page where they have all sorts of options, but the circular one looks like the least hassle:
http://www.glamourhair.com/styleguides/styleguides.asp
Oh better selection of before and after pics here:
http://www.glamourhair.com/extensions/Customer-beforeafters.asp
I am getting closer, I found these on HSN, and they have videos to show you how they work, I didn't understand at first ... a couple of these look like wigs but you pull your hair through these

One more place, but still can't find the circular kind:

JUDY- I went to the Onc today and asked my nurse to look at my hair and tell me if it was growing or if i was crazy. She did call me "obsessed" which made me laugh. But said that i am where i shoudl be at almost 6 weeks> I have very light peach fuzz and some darker hairs too. But i still look bald! I feel better now knowing that i am on shedule. I was getting so worried!
RACHEL- thank you for that great posting and information! Those hair extentions are great!

trishk - we are all obsessed about the hair coming in - you are not unlike ANY of us on this thread!! If you have enough hairs to grab the color, you can go to the health food store and use one of the natural hair color products - they don't hae a lot of chemicals or ammonia and are safe. They don't seem to last as long as regular color, but what a boost it will do to your moral to see the hairs that you know are there!!

trish, don't tell me where that nurse is because I will go there myself and smack him/her in the head. Then I might shave their head. And kick them in the stomach. "Obsessed" my derrière. That was completely out of line for them to say. They know better. They *should* be validating your feelings and giving you the right information- and i rarely use the world "should".
That was just ridiculous toxic stupidity on their part. Oh I am just too angry about it to even come up with coherent thoughts. The level of insensitivity that many medical professionals exhibit is criminal. The rest of the world is ignorant, but there is no excuse for nurses and doctors. They did the same to me abotu my radiation burns, it's like once you are in treatment you are a prisoner and subject to their abuse. I am just completely nauseated by that remark.
Gotta stop there because I would write things that would get me kicked off the board (and someone would come to my house and wash my mouth with soap). Please please tell me that you have washed this stupid comment out of your brain? Else I will be hunting down that !!#!@!!@ like Elmer Fudd.

I'm STILL angry about that "obsessed" comment. Look, a couple weeks ago they discontinued my hair conditioner- the one I have used for 20 years, from a company that's been in business for 150 years and was bought by L'Oreal, who is systematically discontinuing all their great products. I AM OBSESSED. I AM FURIOUS. I wrote tot he company, I refuse o buy anything from them ever again. It's reignited daily when I look at the mirror, I am so upset that i am so upset about this...
I just spent $400 on hair straightening because I can't get my hair to look right, and I am not taking my kid out to play for fear it will mess up my hair. It bothers me EVERY DAY, every time I look in the mirror, it makes me lose confidence - and I DIDN'T DO CHEMO. THIS IS A NORMAL DAY OF HAIRCARE. Then I was telling a young mommy friend about having to avoid sweating and getting my hair wet for 3 days, that's crazy, but I am doing it. It's supposed to rain the next three days, so I am making plans to avoid going outside, just did the grocery shopping tonight. She tells me she is going for her Japanese Straightening appt Thursday, and that's got to be also $400-$600. Sally Hershberger who cut Clinton and Hillary's hair charges $600 for a cut. Politicians fly their stylists in, and Jose Eber cut off Farrah's hair when she was going for chemo...
If you shave a dog they will become depressed and usually be cut from the pack. It's even in the animal kingdom. Even a young boy's first haircut is a rite of passage. How about all those locks of hair being kept in lockets from the early centuries, the story of Delilah. Don't even get me started on how MEN obsess about their hair... and its proven that there is all sorts of social discrimination against bald men in general (jobs, promotions, romance etc). The Enron movie had a whole section on how Skilling got hair. I had a friend who made a fortune with men's hair weaves. It's one thing when one chooses to shave their head (sinnead) or wear their hair very short (susan powter, grace jones, annie lennox) but to be forcibly stripped of your hair to save your life is akin to being put into a concentration camp, its dehumanizing.
Obsessed? you? just for asking if it was really growing in because it's so light? No. Not. Not a bit. Nonsense. Blarney. BS. Crapola.

momofboys - awesome!! I cannot wait to meet Joseph next week - and get my hair colored the right way - I am counting the minutes!! When are you heading up to NYC?
Rachel, as usual, right on sister!! Obsessed. Of course we are!!!!! We lost our friggin hair!!!! Who wouldn't be in the mirror every five flippin' minutes? I know when I was home on furlough weeks, it was all I could do to tear myself away from the mirror. I still check it every so often to see if I can see ANY difference. Did any of these nurses lose their hair? I doubt it. And Rachel, I hear you about the discontinued product. Before BC, I obsessed over my hair anyway - it is very thick and I was always looking for the best defrizzer and the best way to keep it shiny and soft and straight, and I spent tons of money and hours and hours on it to make it beautiful. Then it falls out. Of course we want it back. Stupid people just don't get it sometimes!

@ Mom of boys: Life IS good!! Can't wait to meet you!
@ Goldie0827: Thank YOU! I feel blessed that I can be of the slightest bit of help. Hope all is well!!
@ Chelev: Can't wait for our date on the 23rd!! So looking forward to meeting you!

Chelev & Jan, are you both going to be in NYC at the same time? That would be so nice, to say the least! Of course you know we want to see pictures!
Maybe we should all head over to Trish's nurse, hold her down, shave her head, eyebrows and pull out her eyelashes..........and lets see if she becomes "obsessed".

I personally favor bathing her in Nair.

LOL @ Rachel..........that'll work!

Five of my girlfriends and I are leaving Saturday for NYC. We'll be there for three nights. I'm sooo excited to get out of town!!! I'm trying right now to set up something to meet one of my breast friends from the March chemo board.

Joseph...I am a hairstylist too. I think it is wonderful that you are posting here and giving advice to this fantastic group of ladies (including me) lol What brand of color color are you going to use on Chelev next week? I am wanting to start using a brand that is less toxic on myself and my clients and I am checking into Eco-colors. Have you ever used it?0
-
RACHEL, CHELEV, GOLDIE and JUDY- thank you for the support! i was really embarrased when the nurse called me obsessed in front of everyone at the doc office! But i laughed it off and figured they just dont understand because they have NEVER LOST THIER HAIR! she has this amazing thick curly head of hair and would be devistated if she lost it! My hair before BC was natural blonde, long, thick and wavy. I donated it without shedding a tear when i knew i was going to do chemo. I even smiled when i shaved it. But now that i have been without it for 4 months now, it is getting pretty old! I have shed many tears in the last months over my stupid hair. OBSESSED? YES! If i have to invent another way to wear a scarf or hat or both, i just may loose my mind.
Rachel, you can come to my ONC office any time and yell at my nurse! They act like we are ungreatful! I am so greatful to have survived this and thank God every day for it, but i still can be annoyed by all the SE's and my hair. Call me vain, i dont care. I just want to look as good as i feel now!!!
I am definatley going to try the natural color in a couple weeks, need just a wee bit more growth first! Does it dye your scalp too?
0 -
trishk - Good for you!!! I know what you mean, I eventually just gave up and started wearing bandanas because I couldn't take it and then when I felt like I had enough covering my head that I wouldn't either be mistaken for trying to shave my head or that I could get sunburn (hafta think of these things in Florida), I said the heck with it all and dropped even the bandana.
Yes, the natural color will dye your scalp at first, but it washes off after one or two washings - but actually, I thought (and I'm a little weird here), it helped look like more hair - sort of darkening the 5 o'clock shadow effect!
0 -
trish~ If you are obsessed than I am right there with you. I used a paint brush to put the dye on my head to keep a lot off of my scalp. You can look back and see my crazy post about all the hair I was getting..heheh.... I now look like the gerber baby and while I would like a different or just a style I will take it. It's hair afterall

jaimieh- You look great! I cant wait to have it even just covering my scalp. It is so white! I feel like putting self tanner in my head but afraid it would clog my hair folicles or something! lOL
thanks for sharing. How far past treatment are you?
I am finding that everyones time table is different. Some people grow back right away and other take a few months.
