Any advice for really really dry scalp? I am 15 weeks PFC I have about a half inch of hair, it isn't getting any longer but it has thickened a bit but slowly. I am my own personal snow storm. I oil my scalp before I wash my hair but I only get about a day without 'snow'. If I was in a greenhouse people would think it was a life sized snow globe!!! It's awkward because my hair doesn't look great while it is oiled so I have to do that and then wash it before I can go out - but the longer I leave the oil on the better but then I can't go out!!! SFBC - why do we have to put up with all this!!!

Thank you ladies for sharing your experiences - I am learning so much from this thread.
I haven't started chemo so I can't comment on personal hair loss but I would like to make a few suggestions if I may.
A couple of years ago I tried individual eye lash extensions. I wanted them to fill in my own sparse eye lashes and they were great. They lasted about 4 weeks and they were individually glued in by an esthetician (sp?). Has anyone else tried these out?
As for the itchy dry scalp - have you tried spraying your scalp with a solution of 1/2 water and 1/2 cider vinegar? Leave it in for about 1 hour BEFORE you wash your hair and see if that helps.

So it's been a year since my last Taxol infusion.....so I thought I would post my hair today......not quite as long as I was hoping for a year out......but it's hair and I'll take it!
pre chemo
short and purple.....couple months out
couple of months later....went a little crazy with some colours!
got some extensions in the front......they didn't last too long!
About 8 months out!
today.....getting there.....can't wait for a pony tail......sorry the pics are so big.......and for those of you with little or no hair right now.......keep the faith......it does come back........and I am sure it's the herceptin that is slowing my growth.
Happy hair growing!

vinogal - that's great growth!! Why didn't the extensions last long? Did they fall out or did you take them out. I am really wanting to try some, but I don't want to spend the money if they don't work.

Lilred, thank you for the advice, much appreciated.
Vino, you look great and I think that is alot of hair. You did not get the frizzy curls?
Here is my attempt at trying to straighten my hair. It just takes so darn long!

@ Nodapearl: You can try using a product like Bumble and bumble curl defining creme. Apply a small amount and and scrunch. Then let it aire dry and when hair is 100% dry scrunch again or break run fingers through to break up curls. If you still are having a problem with frizz, inconsistant curls, or unruly curls you can try a keratin treatment. Hair is 88% keratin and when this keratin complex is infused into the hair it defrizzes and softens curl leaving a softer more nicely shaped curl. Aslo, it will reduce the time it takes to straighten it (when you want that) in at least half the time.

Hope this helped!

@Goldie0827: It seems like you would be a good candidate for this Keratin Treament. You can get more info at http://www.keratincomplex.com/ Hope this helps!

@ Ainm: Hello there! I saw your post about the dry scalp and I have an idea for you. Believe it or not, brown Listerine! Apply it to your scalp when you get in the shower then leave in while you shower then rinse and shampoo. I do it every couple of days and my scalp has never been better and no flaking. I have tried every dandruff and medicated shampoo out there and thisworks the best for me so far. Like anything else you have to keep doing it or else it will come back. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

@Chelev: So glad to hear you had a good time in NYC. It was a pleasure meeting you and your sister. I actually ran into her last night!!! I had such a fun time with you at the salon. Hope all is well.

wow somehow I missed a lot of posts...
vinogal that's a fabulous photo progression
lori wow you look super- what a drastic wonderful change from the last photos you posted!!!!
I have to second the LISTERINE! It rocks! I have been using it after the keratin treatment (thanks to Joseph and it really works. I was a Nizoral user, and like Joseph, had tried everything. The Nizoral was really rough on my hair and my color. So many problems with my scalp, one time Joseph had to send me home without color.
OK, picture time
lbrewer, the first Chemocolor Gal with Joseph at the salon (no point in posting the "before" pic, right? This is "after")
Next up, mom of boys and lbrewer and myself...
Now we did take the "secret handshake" photos, but since we have to keep lbrewer "clean" you can't see them... (I could edit out lbrewer but what fun would that be?)
and one with Joseph, revealing just how much Xanax I took that morning before my mammo, and how happy I was that it was clean, and that I was with my BC org pals and Joseph to celebrate:
for Chelev, her sister was taking a gazillion pics I hope I get to see, but the *only* one I got was this one - the secret handshake, with my son on my back (but his head is turned away so all you see is his tan sun hat)
This is chelev BEFORE her LGFB makeover, so I can't wait to see her after!!!!
Thank you guys for loads of fun (and its too funny you ran into chelev's sister already Joseph... biggest small town eh?)

oh oh almost forgot, so this is before and after the kertain treatment, remember its also the difference between drying naturally and coating with this keratin stuff and using the flat iron, then after this picture straightened wearing it without washing, wetting or sweating (!!!!!!) for 3 days (the formaldehyde formula can be one day) . When my hair dries naturally it's curly, like the before pic, but softer and nicer.
Have to get Joseph to leave more room at the bottom of the before shot next time to line it up better, but you kinda get the idea how much longer it is when it's straightened

Nodapearl.....they didn't last long....they fell out.....I was told this would be the case......but I was headed to Vegas and just felt like I needed something.
Goldie......You look fantastic........you have great growth....so much longer than mine....I was pretty curly before losing it.....came in less curly.....texture is finally feeling better.... I see our diagnosis was around the same time.....but you are HER2-......confirms my theory that the herceptin is slowing things down,.......last one on October 14th......fingers crossed for faster growth!
Cheers and hugs to all!

I can't wait to have hair that long!!!
Rachel, there really was NO difference after the makeover - it was more of a makeup application than a true makeover, although their hair guy was really cool and ended up shaping my hair a little more (sorry, Joseph - I would have had you do it if I had time!!!!), but the makeup artist was either freaked out by the cameras or something and she butchered my eyebrows (I had to go to the Benefit brow bar at Bloomies in SoHo to have them fixed!!) and didn't do an impressive makeup job - I ended up trying to fix it with the five minutes I had. I'll post some pictures and I have some that Lisa, my sister took at the salon that I can post too so you guys can see the hair color Joseph did.

Rachel, thanks for posting the pics. Makes me almost feel like I was there! Momofboys, lbrewer, Chelev and Rachel too..........you all look great! Amazing how just a little color can make us feel so much better. Y'all look so happy and excited.
Gosh Jax, it doesn't look like iherceptin is slowing it down too bad. Looks like if you were to straighten yours, like I did, yours would be just about as long.
Joseph or Rachel, this keritin treatment.....can only be applied by a professional? I didn't see anywhere on the website that you could purchase it.

Joseph - thanks for the info. I will try anything to get rid of this mop-head!!
Rachel - your hair is gorgeous!!!!!

@ goldie0827: The product can only be purchased and must only be a licensed cosmetologist. In addition to having a license I also had to take a class and be certified to do this treatment.0

Joseph - rachel thanks for the info re Listerine. Now - just so that I get this right and don't end up bald again!!! Here in Ireland Listerine is a mouth wash - are we talking about the same thing???? And brown Listerine - I'll have to look in the pharmacy to see if they have it - I think most of the listerine available here is the yellow and green stuff but I will check it out if it is the mouth wash you mean. If it's not the mouth wash - well then I'm stumped - haven't a clue what you mean but I'll get my friend in Seattle to send me whatever it is!!!! Or I could convince my DH that I need to go to NY for hair care products (or oral hygiene products!!). Thanks for your help, really appreciate it - at the moment I'm dripping almond oil!!!

DAWN- thank you for reposting the pic! You look like me now!~ ha ha I guess i was just a little slow to start to grow back. Each day i see more and more new hair poking through. the back is getting really thick, so at least soon i can wear my hats without a scarf underneath. Why is it that the top is the last to fill in? ugh!
My new fear is starting Tamoxofin and i hear some people experiance hair thining. I am just barely growing my hair back and wondered who here is on tamoxofin and did they see any significant hair thinnig or slower growth?
Also, i know some people are using Roagain products, if you use them and stop, will your hair continue to grow as usual? I know with men if they stop using it they will stop growing hair in the balding regions.
I am full of questions today! ha ha

I started tamofoflin 8/1. I have not noticed any problems or slowing of hair growth. (So far)

Hi all, how are you all doing? I am 9 weeks pfc and everything is starting to grow in. I am really worried though about the lashes and brows coming out again! Just wanted to vent. Apart from that, feeling better every day.
Hope you are all doing ok today. Will check back in again soon.
Hugs, Judy xxxxx

My hair is coming in fast and is a couple inches long but it's te tightest curls you've ever seen. My hair was past my shoulders and staright before chemo. Not sure what to do with it, don't want to look like Ronald McDonald in a few months, hopefully it starts growing down instead of out lol. it cam eback the same colour as it was.
Do the curls last?? Has anyone had the curls last or do they go away after a few haircuts. Mine are super-tight so I am thinking they are here to stay

quickie- got home late long day blah blah... YES LISTERINE the mouth wash, brown is like the original "flavor", yes mouthwash on your scalp. So far, so good. I need to get a squeeze bottle for it though...
I hesitated to post pics of my hair (I'm not a chemo patient) but wanted to show you how the keratin treatment - at least at first- looked, and what a flat iron can do if your hair is curly to get length. I am a hair nut as you can tell, and came thisclose to losing it to chemo (oncotype tested me out of chemo), and then just got furious that there isn't mo' better info out there for chemo patients growing out. Thank you for the kind words about my hair. Like all of you, my hair is important to me. Never ever apologize for being ticked off about having to lose your hair and wait for it to grow back. It still could happen to me, and i am grateful for all I have learned from you.
chelev- that's a shame about the makeover/under/over/under...

My hair came back curly when it got about 1 1/2 inches long. My hair had been past my shoulders and straight as straight could be. I loved being able to wash my hair, put a little mousse in it and fluff it with my hands and it was ready to go. I got married 13 months after my last chemo, and my hair was still curly enough to not need much attention. I got my first haircut the day of my wedding because the stylist said my hair would behave better with "cut" ends. Within about six more months, I had shoulder length straight hair once more. You start to appreciate even the most uncooperative hair once you have been through a period of not having any.

I agree with the Listerine treatment but I must confess - I have used this on my horse's tail for years. When her tail skin gets dry and flaky she will rub it and break off the hairs so you treat the area with listerine and it seems to take the itchy out of it.
I noticed the other day I had dandruff so I started using conditioner on my hair. My hair is only 1-1/2" long so I figured I didn't need conditioner yet but now my scalp is doing so much better.
I think I finally have enough to put some gel on my head and spike it. I had it looking like Vinogals 2nd picture that she posted on this page - other than the purple color.
I quit obsessing about the color of my hair because there just isn't much I can do with it being only 4 months out of chemo and I can't afford to go to a professional hairdresser for coloring right now. However, I am still obsessing about the length and still look in the mirror at least 10 times a day looking for more growth.

Hi, all. I've been on tamox since late August and haven't noticed any thinning of the hair on my head - it is just as thick as it was before bc. Lash loss seems to have slowed, to which I am breathing a huge sigh of relief - so far, mostly only the bottom lashes have fallen out again, the top is thinner but not too bad.
I don't think we ever stop obsessing over our hair - it is our crowning glory and frames our faces, shows our personalities and is very much a part of our core beings. It is only normal for us to worry and get impatient about growth - once we knew we were finished with chemo, it was like a huge hurry up now, let's get better and move past this crap moment. Plus, we were so wrapped up in all of the chemo se's and things that go along with it, who cared what was happening on the top of our heads? Now, we just want "normal."
Rachel, nobody here was offended that you have not gone through chemo - you are still a sister with us in this battle, and you have really stepped up to help us get through some challenging issues, like color, that really aren't addressed - and you shared Joseph with us!!! Week 1 after color and so far so good - it's sticking, not getting muddy or any color changes that I've noticed. this is a GOOD thing!!

Ditto what Chelev said. Chelev, I too am sorry you didn't get more out of your make over. I went for one too, and was not impressed. But mine cost me $300!
Ainm, had to laugh at your question about the listerine, that was cute, but I could also see where you were coming from!
JillyG, I am a year out from chemo. I too am one that got the tight curls. So far, they are not going anywhere! Besides being tight curls, it is also frizzy. Pictures on my profile of my hair all through treatment.
I am off to Hawaii for my wedding. I hope I can make my hair look nice, at least for that day! Be back on the 12th.
Aloha, Lori
