Cincan -- I'm way past the shadow.  I finished chemo October 9 and the 5 o'clock shadow started in early January (right around New Year's).  I now have about an inch of very straight, straggly hair (which I had cut 2 weeks ago to it's current one inch length).  It looks "almost intentional" right now, as a friend recent informed me :)  I lost all of my eyebrows and lashes from mid-November til end of December but noticed at end of December that the brows were coming back and they did grow back quickly, as did the lashes.  I think more recently the brows and lashes have thinned a bit but there are plenty of them there and I think the thinning is just the hair growth getting back to a more normal stagger schedule.  As I understand it, eyebrows and lashes usually grow and fall out quickly but in a staggered fashion so that you never see the loss and chemo disrupts the staggered pattern... so that is why some see more than one cycle of loss and regrowth.

ccbaby:  I am new to this site and 6 wks out form chemo.  My hair is growing in salt & pepper and I used to have alot more pepper before.  It used to be wavy but right now it's kinky!  Question:  I am thinking of getting actual hair extensions so I don't have to wear a wig.  California is already in the mid 70's and it's just going to get hotter.  How long does my hair have to be to get a weave?  Is one type of weave better then the other.

I really appreciate the help.  I have a wonderful stylist who has worked with hair pieces just not with cancer patients!  I would like to forward the info on to her so that she can help me.

    o2bhealthy:  I have hair envy!

Lilah:  Hello--I see you on my other fav-Exchange City.

Thank you everyone--I really do appreciate any help that you can giveCool

Sherri: As at today I do not have enough hair to get cut and not certain I will by my birthday of June 3rd.  (remember I got my hair shaved on April 9, more than 8 weeks post chemo because I did not like the way it was growing in and have since then started growing in again.  So it is only now 5 weeks since starting to grow again.  Probably be a few more months before hair will be ready for a trim. :)  As for the earings will probably get a new pair for my b-day.  When I got them pierced at the end of April they said to keep them in for 6 weeks before taking them out - but hopefully if I take these ones out and put in another pair they will not close up. :)

Yes the Jamie Lee Curtis cut is what I am going for.

Christy: You say that I would have to probably get a darker color first to get this Jamie Lee Curtis color with either 'low lights' or 'reverse frost old school' .   What if the hairstylist I go to does not understand what is meant by this, as this is really what I want. hmmm

Too bad you are in the US of A. :)

buccaneerscj: Well I do have quite a bit of hair on my scalp at the top but not at my sides as of yet.  Not any where near a 1/2 inch as of yet.  I will probably go to the hairdressers to get my hair dyed because of the type of dye job that I want.

Awhile back I had mentioned in the forum here how I did not like the way my hair color was coming in.  I had mentioned there was gray with black roots coming thru my hair, but what I did not like was the back of my head all down my head towards the neckline my hair is pretty much black hardly can see the gray (it is almost as though someone had thrown a can of black dye at my head)....   if it were not for this I would now go topless.  But it is so very, very obvious and I will share a picture here to show what I mean. I do not understand this and wonder if anybody else has experienced this or know anybody else that this has happened to.  Some have told me that when it gets longer and enough to cut that hopefully all that black can be cut off.

Here is the picture of how hair at the back is growing in and I am very concerned:

Here are pictures of each side - the right side first

Here below is the left side

This photo below is the front top and at the front top you can see black going thru it hmm

So you have the re-growth of my hair since shaving it off April 9th, 9 weeks post chemo.

MarieK:  The answer to your question about hair growth in the nether regions.  I lost all mine and my chemo started in December 2009 and I lost all mine by January and I still have next to nothing back.

Leah58: I went to the site for this product you speak of -

babor.com and they have shampoos/conditioner and hair gels.

    Which did you purchase?

I'm now almost 15 weeks post-chemo. My hair has really taken off in the last couple of weeks, but still shorter in the top than in the back. The back is growing in wavy, the top is kind of wiry and a bit thin near the front. I'm hoping the front will fill in a bit more. I had straight brown (with help of Clairol) hair before this. I really didn't think I was this white. I think I'd be too optimistic to hope for more dark hair to come in at this stage.

lovetosail:  I am 14 weeks post chemo and I just noticed in the past couple of weeks that my eye lashes are really starting to come in.  As for the brows, they are still quite sparse, next to none.

WOW Mary!  Amazing growth after only 15 weeks!!!

I didn't have growth anywhere near that after 15 weeks...hummmm, maybe there is truth to Herceptin slowing growth!

o2bhealthy - Michelle:  Did you not notice the first picture that shows the back of my hair growth and looks like someone threw a can of paint at my hair.  The rest of my hair looks grey but the back of it looks like someone threw a can of black paint at it.  I do not understand this and will not go topless until I go to a hairdresser and see if something can be done about the back of my hair.

But thank you just the same for the compliment on how my hair is growing in... I too take Biotin.

MaryNY:  The rest of my hair is growing in salt/pepper mostly grey actually and at the back of my head it literally looks like someone threw a can of black dye at my head.  Many that see me in real time says it looks quite abnormal, so much so I will not go without a hat on.  Did you notice this in the first picture.  You can see a whole blotch of black.  It was not like this when it first starting growin in... it was all grew and then suddenly a whole blotch of black.. hmmm

But sure, if I could I would take the whole blotch of black off the back of my head/hair and throw it at yours lol

Hi, I had my DH take a couple of photos of my hair last Wednesday but I don't know how to upload other than for my avitar.  Can someone let me know how to do it?

    Thanks, Sherri

Charmaine: it's difficult to see that in the photo. Now that I looked at the first pic again, I see a dark area up high on the left. What color was your hair prior to chemo? Maybe it just takes a while for the color to take off and it does it unevenly. When my hair first fell out, I was left with some dark hair along the edge of the scalp near the front. It was as if that somehow escaped the chemo drugs. The rest of my head was more or less bald. So maybe different parts of the scalp have different growth cycles or recover more quickly from the chemo drugs. I'm guessing your hair will even out with time. But I'm sure you are impatient to go topless.

Michelle: Yes, it may be the herceptin. There was also the fact that my chemo regimen was AC*4 followed by CMF*4. A lot of people don't even lose hair on CMF. I had already lost it with the AC, but it started to grow back very quickly after I finished the CMF.

Sugar, you need to post your photos online first (outside of bc.org) and then link to that. There are lots of sites where you can create a free account -- www.flickr.com, www.photobucket.com are a couple of options. For speed in uploading, you might want to reduce your photo size first.

Once you have a photo hosted on one of those sites, right-click the photo and copy the URL (in photobucket use the direct link), then click the picture link (tree icon) in your message, paste the URL ... that's pretty much it. Preview your picture and if you think it's too big, right click, go to image properties and halve the dimensions.

Sherri - the it took me almost a year to figure out how to post pictures and I only know how to insert pic's from FB.  I just copy and past from my FB page...apparently the photos have to be uploaded to a website like FB, Photobug or something like that so that it has a URL in order to post on into a message.  Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along soon.

Charmaine - the black 'paint sploch' is not very obvious in the photo as you have described...when my hair was at that lenght my friends used to say it looked like a cross between a hamster, gerbil and a grey mouse.  I guess that is why I think your hair looks awesome cause is the pictures, especially the sides, your hair color looks well blended.  :)

MaryNY:  Two months or so prior to starting chemo I bought a box of dye from the store and the color was chestnut brown - however by the time I went for chemo the dye had faded considerably...

This is a picture of what my hair color that was dyed in June 2009, by the time the chestnut brown hair dye color had faded just before chemo it looked like this color - therefore not understanding the dark dye color coming in at the back of my head.

o2bhealthy: You are lucky though that your hair is coming in all one color.  Most of mine is salt and pepper (grayish).  With the exception of the back of my hair that has the entirety of hair looking like someone threw a can of dark dye at it.  I just do not understand that.  I have gone to the mailbox downstairs in my building a few times without a hat one.  Some people have approached me and asked, have you put dye on your hair at the back, as it sure looks like it.  It is in blotches all over your hair at the back and black too.  (this is what people say and what it looks like when I look at it in the mirror from putting mirror at front looking into the back).  Just a tad concerned as it was not like this when it first started growin in around March and this is before I shaved it off around April 9th.  (this was the very reason I shaved it off around April 9th - as towards the end of March I started to notice the black blotch in my hair at the end of March and hair started growing in at the start of March... go figure.

My hair just means allot of me.

It just makes me wonder if the hairdresser will be able to get a even dye job on me when most of my hair is a salt and pepper color and the back of it is a huge blotch of black?

Charmaine: I'm sure a good hairstylist will be able to work with the dark hair patch. I'm guessing that could be lightened first and then color applied all over.

hey- my head hair is coming in okay, about an 1/8 of an inch so far.  I was on herceptin, but got an 8 week break for surgery (I had neo adjuvant chemo).  Charmaine, you give me hope that maybe my lashes will come in later.

navymom - congrats on the grandbaby!

I went into Panera for a sandwich this evening. I just glanced at my receipt now and see that they gave me the senior discount. So the grey hair does have some advantages!
