GuyGirl you have to post pics online somewhere first i use photobucket and then copy the url address by right clicking (or control click on a mac) on the image and then paste it into the tree thing.

3JaysMom:  My hair still sticks out even though I am a year out.  It's like I have cowlicks all over my head!  I have never heard of either of those products though I know Sally's carries a spray on product for bald spots that is very real looking-like tiny bits of hair.  Let us know about the other product and if it works for you!

Katherine:  You look great!!!  Funny, these shorter styles seem to all make us look younger, I think.

Lago- Just wanted to say your analogies are too funny.  You and your husband sound like me and my husband.  Laughter truly is the best medicine.

Yes laughter is the best medicine. My husband "claimes" I'm not funny… but I see him chuckle all the time. I think it's more of a tease. He cracks me up.

My mom thinks I'm funny. Tongue out

    Marie,

you new hair color looks wonderful on you. Smile I liked the grayish hair you had, but it seems like it's true that women look younger without they grey.

Wow Marie! It looks great. You look so young in the photo on the bottom left. I did like the gray on you too, but I'm betting you are feeling like your old self now. Did you do the color yourself? Wondering too what product you used?

I'm much grayer/whiter than you, but have resisted reaching for the dye so far. I had my hair cut today and talked to the stylist about color. She suggested a glaze if I didn't want to completely cover the gray and have to deal with roots growing out and expensive maintenance. I never heard of a glaze before. Has anyone here have any experience of that? I'm wondering if it's something I could do myself.

Thanks for all of your positive comments!

Mary I'm not sure about a glaze - I thought that was for enhancing colour & shine rather than covering/dyeing gray hair.  Maybe someone else on here has tried that?

I used Clairol Natural Instincts semi-perm hair colour.  The colour I picked was 28 Nutmeg Dark Brown.  I chose this colour because it's very close to the colour hair of my favourite wig!

At 2 weeks there is a colour refresher I'm supposed to use and the roots are supposed to blend in as the colour fades.

Yes this is a lot of maintenance but I guess sometimes you have to work a bit to look better - you know like put makeup on, style your hair and dress and accessorize yourself!

I just thought I'd give this a try and I'll let you all know how it works out.

My GP suggested prenatal vitamins to help my hair grow faster.  Did not discuss the folic acid.

yikes i take folic acid my doctors never told me it could feed cancer. I am stopping that one right away now. I take one a dayi for women, calcium+D, B complex, and biotin.

Mary your color looks great and your hair looks nice and shiny. You def look younger. My hair is not as grey but there is plenty of grey in there. I can't wait to color it.

Marie your new hair color looks so good with the pretty brown eyes :)

Carrol I have a herceptin infusion in a few weeks and will ask about the folic acid I want to take that too but not if there is a danger. Look at your multiple vitamins sometimes they include folic acid as well...

    Marie,

Your hair looks fantastic, as I look at the pictures, something else I notice is your smile.  You look happier with your new hair too!  I can't wait to have hair again and my smile back.

I don't take any extra folic acid but it's in my vitamin and I do eat  a lot of green leafy vegies. Seems the jury is mixed on this one too. I have read just the opposite in some places… low levels of folic acid is linked to higher risk. I'd be interested in hearing what your oncs say. I don't see mine for 3+ months.

    Marie:  LOVE the color!  Awesome!

Not sure I agree with the thought folic acid can cause cancer.  We need to try to remember the rest of the world out there is popping vitamins/supplements left and right... and a whole bunch of people never get cancer.  I still kinda look at things different I guess. I do take a lot of supplements to help me fight cancer (those that I've read about), and I exercise more, and try to eat healthier.  But sometimes I wonder if Cancer is similar to other diseases where yes, you can combat them to a degree with how you live, but ultimately you need a cure because it's still a random thing hitting people who seemingly do everything right and still get it.

I have also heard the opposite about Folic Acid.  It's supposed to be good for everyone at reasonable doses-everything in moderation?

Marie:  Wow, the color takes off years!  You look fantastic!!!

    Marie, you look awesome!

I also got prenatal vitamins and have been taking them hit or miss.  I did have long hair and nails when I was pregnant.  No harm, no foul, you just pee away excess vitamins.  Thank goodness I don't need Tamoxifen, or I would probably forget to take that every day too.

My medical staff basically said you have to wait for the hair to grow back, and I specifically asked about Rogaine.

I did buy some Biotene (B7) today because I'm impatient (as we all are).  I got the 5000 mcg kind.  Why just do something when you can do something to excess? :)  Story of my life.   Seriously, does anyone have a recommendation about how much to take?  Again, you just pee away what's not needed, so I can't see any harm in extra.  I used to ask my kids' pediatrician about vitamins, and he said if I want to make their urine rich, give them vitamins.

I take 15000 mcg per day... that's three 5 mg capsules... of Biotin.  But then I also take Omega 3, Vit E, and a host of other things.

Gone thru an article about the study which states that those who have high intake of folic acids and Vitamin B12 Supplements had a high risk of being diagnosed or dying with cancer than those who didn`t take them.

Good link Nichole. I really think it's wise to exercise caution when taking supplements.

Ladies, please don't overdo the supplements without checking with your doctor. In the US and Canada, many foods are fortified with folic acid, so it's unlikely that you would be deficient if you are eating a well-balanced diet. The reason mandatory fortification was introduced was to help address the incidene of NTDs (neural tube defects) such as spina bifida in children. If you take a supplement along with your fortified orange juice and fortified cereal/bread in the morning, you may be already getting too much before you even head out the door.

This is an abstract from a scholarly article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2004

"An overwhelming body of evidence for a protective effect of periconceptional folic acid supplementation against neural tube defects (NTDs) led to mandatory folic acid fortification in the United States. The effectiveness of folic acid fortification in improving folate status has already been shown to be quite striking, with a dramatic increase in blood measurements of folate in the United States. Preliminary reports also suggest a significant reduction (≈15-50%) in NTDs in the United States. The success of folic acid fortification in improving folate status and in reducing NTD rates is truly a public health triumph and provides a paradigm of collaboration between science and public health policy. Although folic acid is generally regarded as safe, there continues to be concern that folic acid fortification may have adverse effects in subpopulation groups not originally targeted for fortification. In this regard, an emerging body of evidence suggests that folic acid supplementation may enhance the development and progression of already existing, undiagnosed premalignant and malignant lesions. Over the past few years, the US population has been exposed to a significant increase in folate intake, for which essentially no data on safety exist. The potential cancer-promoting effect of folic acid supplementation needs to be considered in carefully monitoring the long-term effect of folic acid fortification on the vast majority of the US population, who are not at risk of NTDs."

I know it's an earlier study. More recent studies are not entirely conclusive, but some countries (e.g., Ireland, Norway) have decided to err on the side of caution rather than introduce mandatory supplementation with folic acid.

wow this is very confusing apparently a controversial issue. I actually started taking folic acid because my gynocologist recommended it 2 years ago. I had HPV and then a mild dysplasia. I had a leep procedure done which omitted the dysplasia but from what i understand HPV does not go away. 80% of all sexually active women have HPV and if left untreated can lead to cervical cancer. But it is very detectable in pap smears so usually caught very early. My gyno felt that the folic acid would fight the HPV. Who knows what is right. I am thinking maybe i should stop taking it until more conclusive evidence is in favor of it. My onco has it in the list of things i am taking and never told me not to take it. I will have to ask her on my next visit.

I think the most important thing is to have blood tests--Your insurance should cover you having a large panel of tests if your dr. uses the proper codes so it's covered.  If you have an imbalance, it will show.  I think anything taken in moderation is a good thing.  I take 5 mg of Biotin 2 x a day.  I take tons of other stuff and I am working with a clinician to combine and diminish how many individual pills I take daily.  Folic Acid tends to be in many vitamins alread, so I don't think it's necessary to take it as a stand alone vitamin.

I'll be 7 weeks PFC in two days and looking at all your pics I can tell I'm nowhere near any of you. I've got a little fuzz on the sides and a few pieces poking off the very top but you'ld have to look very close to see them...basically, I still look very bald so I'm guess I'm just gonna be one of the slow growers. I just ordered another wig today in a similar style and color to the one I wear all the time as it looks lke I'll be going through the summer with them...and I've picked up a lot of cutsie newsboy type hats, for anyone that wants those for the summer months, look at your walmart, Target, Kmart type stores as they have them really cheap. I found Walmart carries them for between five and ten dollars, but you have to check everytime you go into the store as their selection changes constantly. I also found a cute one on clearance for only four dollars...it fits great...then on a later trip I realized it was a GIRLS hat and not a LADIES hat...wow, my hairless head actually fits in a kids hat - go figure (now if I could only fit into kids clothes)!!

sptinspunk:  I have a very small head and withot hair I would also fit in children sized hats, however, I look horrible in hats, so I just stuck with my wig.  It took at least 3 months or more before I could go topless, so give it time, eat lots of protein, and it will grow!

Spitnspunk: I don't have a small head, but when I lost my hair, I did find that the children's size caps fit me and got a couple of those on sale. I found that some of the womens' hats were too big, so I would put on a stretchy cap first, then the hat on top of that. An alternative is to use a hairband, then put the hat on top of that. I think a lot of the photos in the ACS catalog show that. The hairband has the added benefit of hiding the bald bit in front of the ears, which can otherwise be a giveaway.

Chan - Your hair looks great!  Mine is very similar but a different color.  I am nine months post chemo and had two trims, just to even out the uneven spots.
