Lol! Yep, the front and top for some reason grows in last. Give it time and go for a pixie!

I'm a bit dismayed that there seems to be so many articles/posts saying not to color your hair until it has grown out to about 3". I was so anxious to get out of wigs before summer that I dyed my hair jet black when it was only about a half an inch long to help make it look thicker, and ditched my wigs. Going dark when it was super short really helped get me out of wigs sooner. Then I went brown as it grew out, then back to my usual dark blonde. I'm 11 months out of chemo now and coloring ASAP didn't hurt my hair at all. Is there anyone out there who actually damaged their hair by dying it too early, or is this just the repeated advice of a well-intentioned stylist who hadn't actually been through treatment?

Chan_go_foill: I think people see a couple of issues with applying color too soon. First because the hair is so short, a lot of the color may get on the scalp and be absorbed through the skin. Second, because the chemo drugs are still in the hair shaft, they interact with the dye causing unexpected colors. I think one of the main complaints is brown colors coming out with a reddish tinge. Since you used black that shouldn't have been an issue.
I'm curious about your screenname -- is it Scot's Gaelic? The "go foil" part looks like the Irish "go fóill" meaning "yet" or "for now."

Chan_go_foill the chemo binder I was given during chemo states:
"You may color your hair at any time."

Lago - Love the visor! How is your hair doing? I colored mine the first time after six months and last week for the second time.

i went for a walk today and was amazed by all the blooming flowers & how great it felt to soak up some natural vitamin d, (the breeze was lovely, my hair was actually flowing a bit - yay!!) i kept asking myself as i was walking along the neighborhood why didn't i notice that beautful blooming tree last year or that beautifully landscaped lawn, it suddenly occurred to me that this was the exact time last year i was in the hospital recovering from my double mastectomy, from march to august i was pretty much homebound. i got a bit emotional but so grateful. just wanted to share with my "hair, hair, hair" peeps.
rachel you hair is coming in great, looks like you'll have full coverage too! my hair is so curly and can get poofy if i don't put some serious "hair wax" on it.

I'm about 15 weeks post chemo and my hair seems to be stalling at 1 1/2 inches. I found this photo of a hairstyle which I think will be attainable in..maybe..another 15 weeks? *sigh*

Love the photo above, that looks like it could be do-able with some gel, doesn't it?
@MaryNY my screen name is Irish Gaelic that would have been spoken in Scotland in the 16th/17th centuries. During treatment I did a lot of thinking on the Celtic warriors I'm descended from and I wore or carried my family tarten into every treatment. When it was all over I worked with a Celtic tattoo artist to design the tattoo you see on my profile and written under it is "Chan go foill" which means "Not yet". Good call! You were really close!

I am sure this has been mentioned on here and I actually have this as one of my favorite threads, but I have a question. Has anyone inquired about hair extensions? My hair is maybe 1 1/2" long right now and I am so sick of the wig, but I look a bit like Paul Simon right now.... and it's driving me crazy. I thought about getting extensions (assuming they aren't too expensive) but I am afraid it will ruin what hair I have. Thanks. Allison0

My hair is about 5" now and still extremely curly. I will be one year post chemo on April 15, 2011. I have trimmed only the bottom of the back of my hair and a little near the front. On the back crown of my head, the hair feels like a different texture than the front hair. It's a lot frizzier on the back crown area. Does anyone else have that problem?

Rocket,
Five inches in one year, you lucky girl! I am in the midst of chemo and just smile when I read this type of news. Can't wait for hair, even if it is frizzy. Only hair I have is some white fuzz on sides of face, never had before? I have such hair envey.

You'll have it too. Like someone said earlier, when it starts to grow it really takes off. You'll be there before you know it. I just wish I knew how to style it!0

Treat yourself to a visit to a stylist who works with curly or frizzy hair, maybe some special products will help. I am also in NC.0

How do you upload pics???
Thanks.

Fighter, to the left of the smiley face emoticon in the 'post a reply' box is an image of a tree. Just cut and paste the image URL and hit insert. If it's one of your personal photos, I think you might have to post the photo on a site like Photobucket so that it will have a URL.

Allison: I wanted extensions, too, but I was told it had to be 4" long, and for me, by that time, I no longer wanted extensions.
Lago: I was given a chemo binder, too, but I don't remember ever reading that.
I agree with the post above, that some colors can be a bit weird with chemo hair or they sometimes don't take. I just bleached the heck out of mine and went for that hairstyle above.

MBJ- Thanks. I agree with you. By the time my hair is 4" I won't want extensions either. I don't mind short hair, but right now it far from flattering. I have had short hair for a long time, but I am used to getting different styles often and I am so sick of this wig. I cannot wait to leave the house and not have to worry about if my hair is gonna stay on or not. How far out from chemo are you? Your hair looks pretty long.
Rocket- my hair is only like 1 1/2" long, but my frizzy hair seems to be going wild too. The back base of my head is really curly. Almost like a mullet. I bought some oil ( I will get the name) at a beauty supply store and if you can deal with the greasy feeling, it does help your hair be more manageable. I will post the name this evening.

Hopeful34: I am one year out this week.

I too will be one year out in April. My hair is super thick and curly and I LOVE it! Looks funny now while it is only about 3" long, but it's gonna be awesome in a longer length! I'm hoping I get to keep these curls, I earned them! I have not trimmed anything. I seem to be growing my hair on track with what I read was average- 1/4" per month.

its' so weird, over a year away from chemo, thinning hair that is almost black on the sides, and your'e right, it won't take color, then, the grays are lighter, and chemo another shade. so, for free, i have low lights and highlight!! it'd cost a fortune to do it in the salon! IF i really wanted it, it'd be great! i've gotten to the point where i don't care what color it is, i just want MORE of it. .lol 3jays

Chan_go_foill. That's interesting about your name's origin. You have anglicized it, or made the spelling phonetic, right? There would have been no "h" in Irish in the 16th/17th century and I think the same was true of Scots Gaelic. In modern Irish (widely used 1960s onwards) the "h" is used to indicate the accent (buailte) over a consonant. So prior to that "Chan go foill" would be written as "Ċan go fóill." Some of the letterforms would have been quite different too. The word "Ċan" is foreign to my ears, though it seems to be used in Ulster Irish.

I was assisted by a Gaelic language forum, I'm afraid I don't speak it myself.

I think my growth has stalled out. 14 wks I have full coverage but growing seams to stopped at about 1/2 in. anyone else have this?
0 -
MBJ- you give me hope. I can definitely deal with having hair your length at one year.
Iowa Sue- I finished chemo in October and I just now have 1 1/2" hair. I think you are doing pretty good if you have 1/2" at 4 weeks. It does seem to really start growing all at once. It seems like it goes really slow, but when I see people who haven't seen me in a week or so, they seem to notice the difference where I don't. Good luck to you. It's hard to be patient, I know. Take Care. Allison

As I said earlier, I'm a year PFC and it took about 8 weeks before mine started to grow. So it's actually been 8 months since my hair began growing back and I have 5 inches. I measured it constantly when it started growing, but then stopped when it got long enough that I wasn't obsessed with it all the time. In those initial months it grew about 1/2" per month and then it really started to grow faster. Now at 5 inches I realize that it must have grown faster than a rate of 1/2" per month. I used Nioxin initially, but soon after my hair began to grow back, I stopped and used baby shampoo. The curls have not begun to relax and it's just as crazy as ever. I had totally straight hair before chemo and this mop requires a steep learning curve. I am currently using Moroccan hair oil and hydrating cream. They help with the frizz, but I could still use more help.

Hopeful- it was suppose to say 14 weeks. I am glad is seams to be getting thick.
Rocket-I also had straight hair prior and am wondering what Ill end up with. I will be glad to to have hair to mess with. have you tried a blow brush? I like the one wal mart sells from conair it has a gold colored barrel. It worked good for straighten my hair when I had it permed (for fullness).

Rocket: Get thee to a Sally's beauty supply and get some of their Ion Straightening products: They have shampoo, conditioner, spray, gel, cream--and also get a flattening iron. They actually sell one that disperses the Moroccan Oil on your hair as you flat iron. I just got a pro one that delivers a higher heat level, as the regular store ones weren't cutting it.
