MBJ's advice is spot on..shave the uneven white stuff, and then careful what you use to color for the first 6 months or so.  I used FanciFul Roux that you put on with a cotton ball and leave in, so with super short hair, it was a breeze. It colored the gray.  It washes out each time. I don't think your hair has stopped growing...it just doesn't look like it.  All of sudden, bam!  You will see length and evryone else will notice too. I think mine started looking like less bald after 4 months. Its just the way some of us do it.  MBJ has also mentioned several products that encourage hair growth if you have the $ and want to give it a try!  I know how important the hair is....after everything we've been thru, now we have to gaze at this strange person with your name in the mirror. I had to stay away from mirrors for 2 months...it was upsetting.  Denial works short term!!

I colored my hair last week at the same place hat did my wig and shaved my hair prior to chemo. They use an organic colour. My hair was growing back an ashy brown. The colour is more caramel brown. I am about 18 weeks PFC and my hair is growing more and filling in but still really short. I am going without any wig or hat. Looking forward to more length, the hair place said another 6 weeks and maybe they could try to style it? Let's hope as it is 9 year old boy style right now!

rachel sounds like we are at about the same place. I am at 17 and half weeks. I just had surgery a week ago so not paying much attention to my hiar right now. It's still super short but I have hair now I am not bald. It grew in very even all over and salt and pepper. When i am feeling better i am probably going to get it colored professionally. The last few weeks it seemed to just get fuller and only longer on the very top where it sticks straight up. It's very straight compared to the waves i ahd before too, But the back seems wavy so it might curl up still as it gorws. My issue is it grows funny down the back of my neck. It has to be sahved and shaped. I had it shaved the week before my surgery and it's been 2 weeks since then and it's all growing back on my neck. It's annoying because other than that from the front it's not that bad of a cut. I will post updated pics next week when i can lift my arms.

MaryNY:  I bought a professional product that my stylist uses:  Schwarzkopf Igora Vario Blond Plus Blue Dust-Free Bleach 450g/15.9oz  She uses this to go from really dark hair to blonde and also to make blonde hair platinum.  You can use it with a 20 to 30 peroxide.  Start out low and if you don't get the results you want, next time when you do your roots, use a 30.  I did a deep condition first and after.  Good Luck!

My goal date for no wig is April 15th. I want a little more length and a little warmer weather. It is still a little chilly in Iowa yet. I take it off when I get home and when I go sit outside I get kinda chilly without my cover. I have a couple of scars on my head too so i want them to be covered befor I go without. I hate that it seams to stop getting length.

Ok yesterday was my first day at work without my wig. I was really nervous, but it went well. Most people said they liked my hair and a couple even said it took ten years off of me. It's kinda funny cuz it's so grey now. I planned on getting rid of the wig in about a month, but my son told me to just do it! It  felt scary but really freeing!  It's pretty thick but not very long and it is so grey, but i think i like the color. I had very curly hair before chemo and i was hoping it would be straight but no such luck. Oh well just glad i have some hair. It is colder without it. Hope everyone is having a good day! I'm off to rads #26, can't wait to be DONE!!!

I am 6 months out and last two and a half months I am wigless. I was given prescription for Femara three weeks ago and today I filled the prescription. SE: hot flashes (can deal with it), hair loss (cannot deal with it)...

    Anybody on Femara?

I colored my hair early. It was about the time this photo was taken at around 9 weeks PFC. It did not color my scalp. I used the semi-permanent hair color and have still been using it. I don't want to pay the big bucks to get my hair colored until it is longer.

This is my hair now (the previous photo was taken around January 1) when I get out of the shower. It stands straight up! I have to work very hard to get it to lie down.

This was taken today. I had my last chemo on Oct 26. I had my hair trimmed about 3 weeks ago so it would look like a more purposeful style. My hair seems to have a bit of wave to it now, but so far no tight chemo curls. Does that mean I won't get them or is that still a possibility?

    This is me before treatment.

Pam,  Love the hair!  thanks for posting!  I am hairless (finish chemo at end of month), I live for this thread.

Pumala-  how far are you post treatment?  congrats on being topless!

Took my son to orthodontist today, I feel like such a fake in the wig, but tech complimented me on my hair.  I thanked her and told her it was not mine, my son thought I should have whipped it off and asked her if she wanted to borrow it.  Gotta love 12 year old boys!  I have two boys, we are going to the beach in May, told them no wig at beach, just hats, they could care less.  They give me a reason to get thru treatment and back to living.

Ann97 you look great. I am about 2 months behind you but i ahve a similar thing going on. My hair stands straight up on top. I ahve not colored it yet but i plan to. What have you been using to keep your hair down? I had a sort of trim about 2 weeks ago, just to shape it so it gorws in evenly. He used morrocon oil on my hiar to tame the flyaways. My hiar was simlar to yours before chemo too but i think mne was thinner. No sign of curl for me yet really either it is a bit wavy in the back though. I have kind of sideburns and they are stick straight. I never saw my hiar this straight before. usually the the short pieces would really curl up.

Ann- you are so pretty!  With hair, without hair...wonderful to have such a pretty face and can pull it off.  As my chemo wavy hair grows, I have less curl, so I doubt your wave/curls will increase.  I had completely straight hair so I am having fun with the waves. I have learned the benefits of hair gel!!!

Ann97 - to answer your question regarding curls.

Everyone seems to be different - for me, started out with a noticeable wave on the back, sides were straight. Now back and sides are curly - not tight, but definitely curly. Top not as curly.

I still don't do anything to it in the morning, just wash, condition and let it air dry. I kinda foof it up and let it do what it wants. With the humid weather that St. Louis has had a few times this year, I see even more foofyness. Approaching 1 year PFC. Top is 4 inches, sides about 3 1/2 inches. Have had only one mini trim so far since the regrowth started. I may be on of the odd ones here, but I love my wavy, curly hair!

Carrol, when I got my haircut I asked my stylist what product I could use so it would not puff up on top and she pulled out something called Fiber wax. So I bought some. I can't say I love it. It makes my hair look wet and darker. It does help with getting it to stay down. But when I got it, my hair wasn't sticking up yet, just puffy. I guess as it grows it is deciding to stick straight up.

When I run out of the Fiber wax I'm going to try regular hair gel again and see if there is any difference.

    Thanks, Ruth!

Stlcardsfan, I would not mind at all having wavy hair. I would even say I'd be thrilled with wavy hair. I just hope to not have that tight curl so many complain about being so difficult to deal with.

    Ann, Your hair looks great!

Christine, my last chemo was Jan. 13th. It's funny how i can't remember this morning but i remember that date like it was yesterday. :D My hair started growing before i was done with chemo, can't remember when though. The chemo i had was 12x abraxane. It's similar to taxol, but i didn't have to take the steroids with it. Be patient with it, once it starts, it comes in really fast.

I just got to tell you guys, after rads went upstairs to visit my nurse that would give me my chemo, just to say hi. It's the first time i have been in that room since i finished, and it gave me a weird feeling, sure hoping never to have to be there again, except to say hi.

On a lighter note only 7 more rads to go!! WooooHoooooo!!!!!!

Take Care everyone, going outside for a little bit, the sun is out in Seattle (doesn't happen very ofter) Have a great night to all!

Here is my hair at 17 weeks PFC. My hubbie takes the strangest pics. My hair is gradually coming in thicker but still is not completely thick in the crown area.

Ann97: I am 8 weeks PFC and my hair looks exactly like yours/9weeks!! (length/not color) Thank you soo much for posting that pic and your other pics. Now I know there's hope for more hair down the road. You look great! Your color is so much nicer than mine. I can't really figure it out yet. Salt and pepper for sure- some days more salt, others more pepper. Hard to take since I was a very light true blonde/no coloring. Maybe in a year it will change back. Who knows. Just grow, grow. To be honest, I thought it would grower faster, but appreciate your  pics showing me this is the "normal" course of growth.

It's going to be a shocker for folks when I stop wearing this darn wig (natural color) and have this salt/pepper look. Oh, well....more stares.

On the other hand, party, party.... see evidence of lots of eyebrows starting to come in. See hints of tiny black stubs in my 10xmagnifying mirror in eyebrow area. Thrilled!

nikola.. I finished chemo on Aug 31 and started Femara on Nov 22nd.  I seem to keep all those important dates in my head. I haven't lost any hair since starting Femara, but I think that it has certainly slowed down the growth.

Here's me today... hate the color, but just haven't decided what to do about it yet.  My previous hair was blonde and stick straight.  This looks like squirrel fur.

nikola - I have been on femara for over a year, and no hair loss.  My hair is super thick, but it was thick before chemo.  I am almost two years out from my last chemo, so I can't really tell if it has slowed the growth any.

Wow everyone looks great. I started Anastrozole March 1st. My hair growth hasn't slowed. Still filling in on top and front. Still straight. Hasn't thinned either. I always had pretty thick hair but I was thinning on the temples… which seem to be filling in just nicely now. Who knew chemo would fix those spots.

Of course the color is more gray and now almost black (including eyebrows). I think I mentioned I had dark brown not black before.

I'm still waiting to get a bit longer before I color. Still wearing scarves. It still has that "I've survived chemo" look.

Joan my hair feels squirrelish. I have a feeling my hair could do the same thing as yours wehn it grows in… thank goodness for flattening irons.

Joan:  My first hair that came in totally felt like stuffed animal fur-or you could call it squirrel hair, lol.  You have enough growth to try some color and going lighter, I found, was much easier.  You will have to do many a deep condition and wash with only condtioner for awhile though.

I am so ready to put some color in my hair.  I haven't colored my own hair for years and not sure that I want to try. But I don't think it is worth the price what my former colorist would charge for this short stuff.  We have to go to a wedding in Florida in a few weeks and really want to do something before then.  Every dress I try on just looks BLAH with this color.  What to do???

Christine47 - I haven't laughed in so long .. but the tale of your 12 year-old's comment had me in stitches!  Thank you!  Also, all of you with beautiful hairs - you look fabulous and I am green with envy.  Perhaps someday something will sprout.  Ann97, cc4npg, Lago - whoever thought keratin could look so good.

Joan:  Being that the color of your hair right now is pretty even, you could lighten your whole head with either bleach, or, go to Sally's and get some expert help there.  They have to have a cosmetology license to work there.  show them what color you want to achieve from the available hair swatches, pick up some of their deep conditioners, they will tell you what products to buy to get you to your color.  I have been dying my hair for years.  If the color part is intimidating, use the Schwartzkoff with 10-20 weight peroxide and lighten for maybe 10-15 minutes (check while you go--I used 10 weight to get my lighter streaks on black hair and this lightened it about 5 shades).  Then pick up the John Frieda Mousse Colorant from Target (hopefully they have a blonde) and use this over the bleached hair.  Sally's might tell you differently.  They may look at your hair and just say to use a 30 weight peroxide with a blond tint.  Get a friend to help if need be.  I wished you live closer--my stylist is inexpensive and makes it very affordable for me.

2 weeks ago I used Clairol Natural Instincts on my hair.  I just wanted to let you know that it's still quite dark but I do notice some of the white/gray coming through.

No skunk line at the part though!  Being so gray I really hated how you can see that definite line with the new growth when I've used permanent dyes in the past.

I think this looks great and I'm happy that it's fading out "naturally".

Tomorrow I will use the 2 week Colour Refresh that came with it and maybe 2 weeks after that I'll do my whole head again with another box.

I used #28 Dark Brown on my white/gray hair and it's a nice medium to dark brown with highlights where my hair was lighter.

I'm so glad that I decided to colour it - I look younger (or more my age) and feel better about it.

Besides I was getting tired of the old guys (I teach classes in a seniors building) hitting on me all the time thinking I was closer to their age.

Silly I know that hair colour could make me feel better but for me at this stage it's all about looking normal again and getting on with my life!

Happy hair growing to you all!

ann- Your hair looks just like mine right now.  I keep telling my husband I look like Pauley from the Jersey Shore.  My dad keeps asking me why I continue to wear a wig and he doesn't seem to get how crazy my hair is and, how truly unflattering it is on me.  My dad actually grabbed some gel and tried to show me how to style my hair tonight....it looked like my dads.  It was not cute at all, but it made for a good laugh.

My mom taped some show the other night and it had the girl from V (Morena Baccarin) and wanted me to style my hair like hers.  I actually love her hair, but my bangs need to grow some before I can attempt styling it this way.  I attached a picture of her for you to see....her hair really is cute for post chemo.

Nancy- I know July was a while ago.  I had an infection and had to get my Left TE removed so I started chemo July 29, 2010, but didn't finish until October 28th ( a month later than originally thought) So, I cannot wait to have more hair.  I have always had short hair, so I don't mind it, but right now it is useless to try to style.  I think by this July it should be long enough to do something with.  Why do our bangs take so long to grow?  Am I the only experiencing this?  Good Night (more like good morning Laughing) and Take Care!
